Starting point is 00:00:17 Welcome to everyone on to another edition of Fresh Band Friday. My name's Adam Manus. On this show, we dive into some of the best new music that was released in May. Mostly jazz or jazz-adjacent stuff. There was a lot of good music released in May. We're going to start with Los Angeles-based guitarist Jeff Parker. Jeff has a new album out called Happy Today by Jeff Parker's E. Fortet, and Four is like the Roman numeral for Ivy Tet. an incredible band and some really great music. This is called Like Swimware. This is a very patient recording, very joyous recording, something that you can sink into for quite a long time.
Starting point is 00:02:35 This track, Like Swimware, is 23 minutes long, and it's this evolving, revolving figure. that you can just sit back into. So, so nice from Jeff Parker. That's also Anna Butrus on the bass, Jay Belarus on the drums, and Josh Johnson on the saxophone, incredible band, Jeff Parker, ETA, Fortet, and again, Roman numeral four.
Starting point is 00:03:05 Next up, we've got, well, one of our own here at Open Studio. Open Studio artist Gregory Hutchinson, Hutch, the man, back at it with an album called Kind of Now, which is subtitled The Pulse of Miles Davis. This is Miles' centennial birth year.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Miles would have been a hundred years old today, and so a lot of artists are doing Miles tributes. None better than Hutch with this. This has been getting a lot of buzz amongst jazz musicians this album. The opening track, Alu Chah features Ambrose, Akam Usair, Ron
Starting point is 00:03:38 Blake, Gerald Clayton, and Joe Sanders, and of course, the incomparable drummer Gregory Hutchinson. That's the touch from day one. For the first time we heard Gregory Hutchison a long time ago, I was hooked on the man's swing. His whole presence at the kid is sort of like incredible way that he envelops the music and musicians around him with so much swing and heart and love. and you can hear it every time Hutch touches the drum kit and it's all around incredible human being, Gregory Hutchinson.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Kind of now, of course, the play off of Miles Davis is kind of blue. The whole thing is amazing, full of just incredible heavy hitters. Monsters, go check it out right now. The whole thing is incredible. Next up, speaking of monsters, Chris Potter. Tenor saxophone giant Chris Potter has a new album called Alive with Ghosts Today. This is Asawatomi Brown. Bill Frizzell on the guitar, Bernice Travis on the bass,
Starting point is 00:06:36 Nate Smith on the drums, Rainmore on the clarinet, Zechariah L. La Garboe, Bargapel, on the trombone, and Sarah Caswell in the violin. I'm in. I'm already in. Let's go. The legendary Chris Potter, new album Alive with Ghost Today,
Starting point is 00:08:35 anything the drummer Nate Smith seems to touch is always very cool, great taste in projects that Nate Smith picks. Next up, we have the debut album, finally, from the New Jazz Underground. It's called Hoodies, which is an amazing title, and it really fits the New Jazz Underground. But if you don't know, the New Jazz Underground, made a big name for themselves in the last few years on YouTube, using social media, an incredible trio. And everybody's been waiting for this for a long time. This is called Hold My Halo, Paint Me Perfectly. Check this out.

Redick on the drums. Really fine young musicians. And I just can't wait to see everything that they're doing

Speaking of interesting, our next artist is Lori Anderson. And I don't even know how you would describe Lori Anderson. She's kind of a one of one. She's a new album out with the band Sex Mob called, and maybe the greatest title of the year so far,
Starting point is 00:14:54 Let X Equal X. It is live, and here is the title track, Let X Equal X. Lori Anderson and Sex Mob. I met this guy, and he looked like he might have been an ad check clerk and an ice rink, which in fact, he turned out to be. And I said, oh boy, writes again, led X equal, you know, it could be you. Just a sucker for it.
Starting point is 00:15:55 It's a sucker for Roy Anderson, all thanks. Satellites are out tonight. Equal. Recorded live during the 2023 tour, that's Lori Anderson and Sex Mob. Let X equal X. Always, always interesting, but always so good, Lori Anderson. So beautiful is a horrible description, but it is beautiful. It is so beautiful always.

Starting point is 00:18:41 We have links for all of these. that you're hearing below in the show notes. Do go support, if you like it, go buy their stuff on band camp, go buy their physical media. Support artists making art that is not for the masses, but are for nerds like me and you. Or else we might not get it. We might get the good art.
Starting point is 00:19:03 Speaking of good art, our next artist is a great artist. In fact, a legendary basis, Ben Wolf, friend of open studio, Ben has been around before, He's played with everybody and has a new album with a pretty incredible lineup. So Ben Wellf on bass, the incredible Joel Ross on the vibes, Sullivan Fortner on the piano. Chris Lewis on the tenor saxophone, Aaron Kilmel on the drums. The album is called Any Time After Now, and this tune is called Blues. So smooth. Oh my gosh.

Starting point is 00:20:46 Nothing else to say. Very, very swinging. All right. Last but certainly not least, we've got a new album from Tenor Titan Joe Levano. Joe Levano has been one of the most
Starting point is 00:20:58 sought after, respected tenor saxophonist on the scene for a great many years. And Joe has a new album called Paramount Quartet featuring again, just some amazing musicians. Julian Lodge on the guitar, the great Julian Lange on the
