I'm Adam Menace and I'm Peter Martin.
And you're listening to the You'll Hear It Podcast.
It's episode 107.
Wait, 107, is that something to celebrate or something?
Absolutely.
Well, because we missed 100, we forgot.
But you had the brilliant idea of celebrating 107 because 7 is such an important and lucky number.
We're like Chinese gamblers or something from, they play Podoga or whatever that is.
That's a special number that's lucky for them.
That's us.
Nice.
So we're going to do a little anniversary retrospective.
episode here. I love it. That's awesome. A little anniversary retrospective. And maybe even a little
deal for our loyal you'll hear at listeners, right? Nice, nice. A little dangling, dangling participle
coupon for later. I like it. Well, I'm so happy to do this, man. This has been, you know,
an amazing experiment. For those of you who don't know, Peter just came to me one day. He was like,
yo, we're going to do a daily podcast. And I was like, we're going to do a what now? And I said,
we're going to start it today. And we're going to start it today. And we're going to start it today. And we
how things go around here sometimes.
Yep.
And we got back late January.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, maybe, so many of you have responded so positively to it that we can't give it up now.
That's right.
We tried and they pulled us back in every day.
Yeah, no, no.
We've had such an amazing response to this podcast and we're so happy to have so many of you listening and so happy to be in communication with so many of you and talk about jazz with you.
And it's been a real highlight of the year, I think, for us.
It's been kind of therapeutic for us, maybe even a little cathartic at times, you know,
because we spent a lot of time playing music, teaching music,
and we spent a lot of time hanging out.
But surprisingly, we don't actually talk about these things that much.
So when you guys hear us talking about these issues,
this is kind of the first time we're hearing about what each other thinks about some of these things.
I've learned more about you musically than I think I have in the past two years combined.
Exactly.
But it's been fun.
And today's episode, we're really looking forward to this because it's totally free form, which we very rarely do.
I know it seems like everything is free form, but we actually have meticulous notes and planned out and everything is scripted.
Every word is scripted.
But today we're just going to just free form.
So what's up, man?
Well, no, so I wanted to ask you.
So do you have any memories of these first 107 episodes?
Any highlights for you?
No.
No.
Not what?
Well, you'll hear it then.
But a bing.
No, I mean, I do.
I think that, you know, a lot of laughs and stuff, we've had some interesting guests.
I think the main memory, because we say it every episode, is listen.
But I do feel good at least because we give out a lot of, you know, kind of jokes and stuff.
And we want to provide value.
And I think that we do it.
We said from the beginning, we wanted it to be in an entertaining way, you know.
Yeah, that's right.
And we weren't even exactly sure what the audience was going to be.
So we've tried to kind of, you know, both by answering actual questions from users,
and we've tried to mold this around what folks kind of want to learn and hear about,
but do it in a fun and light way because we are, you know, jazz is so precious.
Didn't we have an episode about jazz is too precious and how we're, you know,
we're, no, you had a great word for it when we're elevating every musician.
Oh, yeah, we're putting them on a pedestal or whatever.
Pedestal, but it was another one.
It was a, yeah, we could vamp on this for a while.
this would be entertaining.
Like, C.P.
Literally people dropping off.
I know, I know.
No, it was, they were lionizing.
They were lionizing.
Like, as you said that I had to type,
lionizing, impressive, you know.
But, yeah, so we're trying to demystify,
destigmatize and really, because I think, you know,
our whole attitude,
and we never set it up like this.
And even with Open Studio,
our whole idea with this venture was about,
you know,
taking something that was so fun.
and natural and really simple, you know, playing jazz and trying to present that and teach that in a way and share that.
Because we really see that.
It's, it is simple.
It's not easy, but it's simple.
And it's so many times I think it's presented as something complex.
And so just if you're a musician or just a listener or a lover of jazz, I love like just talking about it when it's just fun and simple and accessible.
Totally.
That's a big thing.
Yeah, I think one of the eye-opening things for me with this whole process of this podcast,
been seeing these themes that come up almost daily, you know, the listen and the same artists that
kind of keep coming up and the same processes that come up and in the same jokes. Sorry about that.
Keep coming up. No, but. But your idea that this is simple. It's not easy, but it's simple. That
has resonated with me. It's actually kind of changed the way that I look at some things. It's been,
it's been a fun thing. For me, a highlight of the whole thing was when we discovered the speak pipe
technology that we could have people ask voice questions and send us questions.
And the whole community that's kind of formed around the podcast, that's been a real joy for me.
Yeah, it's been fun to hear the actual voices and to get them in there. It's funny how you
call it this, discovered this technology. I mean the same technology that's been used since the
70s with an answering machine? Yeah, you know, I'm not very up on the cutting edge of things,
man. Yeah, that's great. And I mean, we invite you guys, everybody to go to openstudio network.com
Oh no, they can just go to
See, this has been a fun thing.
We've confused people from the beginning with two URLs, right?
They figure it out somehow.
I don't know.
How many people are lost on the intranets
somewhere in the hitherland?
You can go to you'll hear it.com.
We had that brilliant idea at the beginning,
but then we're like, is there an apostrophe?
There's nothing.
There's no punctuation.
There's no nothing.
Just you'll hear it.
That's right.
Which is probably bad grabber.
You can go to you'll hear it.
It is one of our favorite.
parts about this podcast is hearing from you, getting your ideas for episodes, getting your feedback
and getting your take on some of our lists and some of our topics. We want to hear more of that.
So really can't thank this community enough. Can't thank you guys enough for listening and for
being a part of it and participating. Oh, and for, let's talk about our ratings. I don't know if you've
checked those recently because actually I haven't. But we've been really on that five-star thing for a while.
Oh, yeah, yeah. Please leave us a rating. It really helps get us in front of more eyes.
No, I'm saying that we have an average of five stars.
Oh, yeah, no, I just assumed.
But you're going into pleading mode there, which I like that.
Oh, no, no.
Because, you know what?
Just because we're on top today, that doesn't mean tomorrow or not.
That's right.
Actually, I had an idea about that before you get into that.
And I know what you're going to do, which is very interesting.
But on the ratings and review thing, I know we're averaging five stars, but would it be too much to ask our listeners since we're at episode 107 now if we could start getting some six star reviews?
is that is I mean if they're feeling it I don't want to
bro that's not possible well no but but it would be fun
we can see if we can break the Apple podcast like rating system
like they can keep press like five no I want one more
and blow the whole Apple system if we have any listeners that happen to be hackers
that's right we're not saying to do it but yeah we're not
we're not promoting yeah but if it did happen that's right
there might be something in it for you no but if you could keep the
the ratings and reviews really help us because actually
it helps the show is what it is
because the way that these podcasts work
we finally figured out
that it puts it in front of more people
and gets suggested to people that might be interested
when they go to Apple Podcasts
or Google Play or whatever
so when you rate it and you give it a review
it just helps spread the love basically
That's right
So this episode isn't just going to be
self-congratulatory even though we could do that
for 20, 30 minutes
That's right
We do want to offer a little bit of thank you to you, our listeners, on this our 107th episode.
And that is for a discount on, you know, you might know that we are doing this through Open Studio, which is an online...
How would they possibly know that?
I don't know.
It's our online jazz education website.
We have a lot of courses by a lot of really amazing teachers, Peter McBride, Sean Jones, Greg Hutchinson, Ulysses-Owins, Peter Sprague, Hmerlobombo, Soon-N-Wolf.
Warren Wolf.
Ruben Rogers.
Dian Reeves is coming soon.
We've got a lot of amazing artists in the pipeline, actually.
And so with that, we want to offer you our listeners a very interesting offer of $107.
Well, how do we get that number from?
I don't know.
Just out of thin there.
$107 off our annual all-access pass.
So that's a yearly all-access pass to all-of-our courses.
If you use the code, you'll hear it.
Again, no posse, no punctuation.
You got to figure out how to spell it correctly.
Go to openstudio network.com, click on the all-access pass, get the yearly all-access pass, put in the offer code field put in.
You'll hear it, and you will get $107 off an annual all-access pass.
This is kind of crazy because that's like, we've never done a discount that big on that.
Are we sure we should be doing this?
I'm not sure.
We might be actually going in the hole on this.
But you'll hear our listeners are so loyal and so, you know, they've, you know, they've
They've been spreading the gospel of Open Studio.
Don't share it with your friends, though.
Do not share this.
And this is only going to be available for 48 hours from the launch of this episode.
So what if somebody hears it two days later?
Sorry.
Sorry.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But you could check back at episode 207.
We might do something.
Now, we can't afford a $207 discount.
Oh, yeah.
We will pay you to sign up at Open Studio.
No, we do want to say thank you with this.
And this is kind of a one-time only thing, but we just love.
are you, you'll hear it crowd, and we really believe in this all-axis pass and what we're doing.
And so hopefully, if you can swing it, check it out.
Yep, absolutely.
And, I mean, the all-access is fun because, I mean, you can, we have so many folks coming to us that way,
and also folks that just want the individual courses where you get the lifetime access,
which is wonderful.
And so, you know, you have a choice of either one of those.
And the all-axis is really good for folks that are like, you know, basically they want
to binge watch and listen.
You know, kind of like Netflix.
You can just sit there for hours and hours, and your spouse is just like, you are such a loser.
But this is educational, so it's actually a little different.
It's entertaining, but it's also educational.
Yeah, no, we have five piano courses.
We have three drum courses, three guitar courses, you know, one base course, but many more coming.
Yeah.
And, you know, if you play any of those instruments, it's going to be worth it.
That's right.
So, anyway, thank you guys so much.
We hope to be around for another 107.
I didn't think it would come up this quickly.
which is funny because we said daily,
it should have been pretty easy to figure out
what date this would come up,
but here it is upon us.
I know.
Yeah, no, this is just like it keeps rolling.
Well, thank you for being here for the journey, Adam.
Thank you, Pete.
Yeah, man.
Yeah, man.
You'll hear it.
That's a cut.
