I'm Adam Ennis and I'm Peter Martin and you're listening to the You'll Hearer podcast.
Daily Jazz advice and occasional blindfold tests coming at you.
You ready for this?
Brought you by Open Studio. I'm a little nervous.
You are a little red in the face. You're sweating profusely.
You're okay?
I'm ready. I'm ready to go. I just feel like I'm in college again.
Well, I showed the way last week with a very lackluster initial
blindfold tests here at the You'll Hear a podcast.
So you surely can do better than that.
abysmal. Didn't I, I haven't even
listened to it because it was shameful
in a lot of ways. You did grid on
some things.
The ones that I got, correct.
I did good on. The ones, when I
screwed up and didn't identify
myself properly, that was probably
the worst.
Wah, wah, yeah. So
I'm not going to tell you
how challenging this is going to be because I don't actually
know, because I didn't want to go to things
that I knew that you knew or that we were talking about
a lot. But I want to give you a little challenge. But I
that you know a lot of music. So what we're looking for here is is really identifying the
artist. If you can get the track and the album that's even better. But you know, typical blindfold
test. Are you ready for this? I'm ready. Let's do it. All right, here we go. Stop. Is that the bad plus?
No. Is that Brad Meldow? No. Is that Joshua Redmond? No. Man, I'm striking out. Who
is that? And we keep going? I'm bad. You're not striking out yet. You don't have to be instant.
What is this?
Why do I know this?
Or more accurately, why do you not know this?
Why do I not know this?
Some hints?
Bob Mincer.
Bob Mincer.
Well, that's the hint.
The yellow jackets.
Yes.
That's embarrassing.
No, no, no.
I mean, this is from their coherence record,
which I think is their last record.
It's not super, I mean, just from like a couple years ago.
It's not like, I think it's a great album.
I don't know that one, but, man, I could have got that from the,
the classic piano stylings.
Yeah.
It's all good.
I mean, Bradmorentale.
You know.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The modern thing.
That was close, right?
Bad plus yellow jackets?
Well, they're very influential.
Yellow jackets on both those.
All right.
Shall we move on or you want to jump out the window yet?
Oh, for one.
Okay.
Okay.
Keep going.
Okay.
This one you may, well, let's just play it.
Let me not qualify.
Sorry.
Oh, I like this.
Has a bit of a 90s vibe.
Medi came by on her way.
Uh, Riverman.
Yep.
Who is that?
Oh, man.
Oh, man.
I don't know, man.
I'm striking out.
That's a tough one here.
That's Liz Wright.
That's Liz Wright.
Yeah.
And her voice is distinctive, but I would say it can be hard to place if you haven't heard the actual.
Yeah, I don't know.
If it's something that you know of hers, you can.
you can place it, so that's okay.
All right.
We're just warm it up.
We're just warm it up.
All right.
You ready for the next one?
Man, I'm bad at this.
Okay, go.
How did we do last time?
Seven, we did seven.
One, two, three, four, five.
Oh, that's exactly what I happened to have.
Oh, look at that.
All right, I'm over two.
Okay, just talk about how you're feeling that because I'm having a little trouble
locate.
This is saying locate.
So you want to riff a little bit?
Well, yeah, you know.
Say how you're feeling so far.
Well, I feel disappointed.
I'm happy that I got Riverman, like I got the tune.
Right.
I feel like I need to listen to more Yellow Jackets because I don't know that album, and I have a limited understanding of their music.
But even those first few seconds, every time I hear Russell Frenti play anything, I'm like, I got to check this guy out more.
Yeah.
Like he's so underrated, I think.
100%.
Awesome.
Awesome musician.
Okay.
You ready to go?
Yep.
Okay.
Redemption time.
I know this.
Roy Hargrove.
Raise the podcast roof.
Paris, San Deney.
Where.
Uh, uh, uh, enjoy that.
Nice.
Yeah, that's good.
Montes Coleman.
Yep.
Nice.
Love it.
So that's from the record, ear food.
Ear food.
Yeah.
I know you were about to say that.
No, I do that.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
2007, six.
Yeah, something around there.
And that's actually St.
St.
St. St. Denis?
Paris, Strasbourg, Santonis.
Yeah.
In Paris.
Yeah.
In Paris.
You're right on.
Close.
Cool.
Um.
Phew.
You're nervous there.
Oh man.
Pulled that one out.
Good.
Okay.
Okay, here's the next one.
This one.
I didn't get goose egg.
That's all I'm saying.
Exactly.
I'll be shocked if you know this actual track.
Okay.
Because it's kind of from an obscure record.
Not an obscure, but I want you to just focus on the vocalist and see if you can.
Actually, I don't even know anybody else is on here, so that's all you need to know.
Oh, great.
This is not voting well.
Okay, good.
Actually, I do, but not everybody.
Woo!
Walk the bar of the intro.
Yeah.
She's coming.
That is Kurt.
Kurt.
That is Kurt Elling.
And that is from the record.
Oh, Craig.
Dang, snap.
I don't know the record.
What is it?
It's Night moves.
Night moves.
He's got such a distinctive voice, too.
Yeah.
That's what I'm looking for.
You.
Not that you don't live right.
Well, no, she does, but it can be.
I could see it being harder at a place than Kurt's.
if it was a track you hadn't heard.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Good.
All right, man, redemption.
Ooh, high five.
Bro, I feel a little bit better now.
About to get fired up in here, too.
Are we ready for the next one?
Yeah, let's do it.
Okay.
Miles Davis, Abuavi.
That's from...
You can hear a little more.
Sorry, I didn't mean to cut it off so quickly.
It's an opening track.
No.
Is it from someday my principal come?
I think it's the second.
track I want to say.
The second track, that's right, yeah.
Old folks?
Yeah, old folks.
Okay.
Who's on...
Who's on piano?
Yeah.
Is that...
Win Kelly?
Yeah.
That's good, because that's hard to hear from this.
Actually, the way he's playing.
I would have probably guessed, I mean, I know this record really well.
Yeah.
But had I not, but known that band, I would have guessed Red Garland from what he just played.
From what he just played with all those block chords up top.
Yeah.
That's great, man. Wow, what a vibe.
Nice. That's good.
Very good.
Woo.
More than redemption.
Coming on strong.
Three for five.
Okay.
But who's keeping count?
I am.
Woo.
I know this, too.
What is it?
For the pianist and the vocalist.
Anything else is like amazingly.
The big man, all right.
Disco dancers greet him.
Plain clothes, cops greet him.
Small-time big man.
Fresh lipstickless name.
Herbie?
Herbie. Herbie, Herbie, Hancock?
Is that from the Joni letters?
It is, absolutely.
The vocalist, is that Tina Turner?
That is Tina Turner.
That's good.
That's good.
St. Louis's own.
Now, that's one, I played for a lot of people
that hadn't heard this.
It was a popular record, but it's one of those.
You can still catch learned people
that don't know this.
And there are, like, a lot of jazz people
do not guess Tina Turner.
You know, but that was very good.
I remember just because the first time I heard it being like,
is that Tina Turner?
Yeah.
That's F and Tina Turner.
Man, I love that track.
I love what Herbie, I'm sorry, I know this is blindfold test.
It's not a music appreciation.
Man, Herbie is killing it on this whole album though.
Man, Wayne, I'm jumping ahead here.
It's Vinny on drums.
Leonel, you're on the guitar.
That's incredible.
All right, that's good, man.
What are you at four for six?
Yeah.
Killing it, man.
Started weak coming on strong.
I appreciate the softballs, man.
Much as the St. L'Lawks.
Cardinals are doing in the NL Central this year.
Look out how it.
All right.
This is number seven.
All right.
Just do you nice.
Speaking of baseball, here comes a nice little softball.
Okay.
This made it into last week's podcast.
I know.
It's just like.
Notorious B.I.G.
Big Papa.
I think we need to play that tune every single week.
We got to sneak it in somehow.
That's a new theme song.
Uh.
That's right.
That's how we do it.
Are you joining in on the,
Cranic and Bach.
All right.
I think,
am I five for seven?
That was five for seven, man.
Very good.
I'm out.
See you guys later.
And you know,
it was great about it too.
You know,
that was kind of like,
you know,
when you do the free throws
and you're like,
you miss the first couple ones,
you're like,
the best I can get is 80%.
So I got to nail the rest of them.
You did throw in some stuff
that I was like kind of guaranteed to know.
I didn't move anything around though.
This is just kind of the way I appreciate that.
So,
yeah, man,
this is good.
Should we do this again?
Let's do it.
I love this.
We should have guests on to do it.
We should totally get some guests.
That would be super fun.
Yeah.
Yeah.
All right.
All right.
Well, until next week, you'll hear it.
