Starting point is 00:00:01 Hey, Peter. Hey. Hey, not to be too doom and gloom about this, but I'm about to destroy you. Oh, my goodness. Terminator, coming for me. You won't be back. I loved it. He's going to talk through the whole theme?
Starting point is 00:00:20 Yeah. It's our new thing. Talk back Thursdays. I'm at a menace. And I'm Peter Martin. And you're listening to the You'll Hear podcast. Jazz. Explain it.
Starting point is 00:00:30 Now, explain to me this, Peter. It's Wednesday, but we're going to do a brand new feature. Yeah? Yes. Well, you want me to explain? That's how we've always done it. It is how we go. We always switch it up.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Is this feedback loop Friday or dueling decades Tuesday? No, what is this? Diamond in the rough Monday. No, this is Peter Stumps. No, Adam Stumps Peter Wednesday. Right. Blindfold tests. Yeah, it's going to be blindfold test.
Starting point is 00:00:56 Friday's going to be Peter Stumps Adam. Exactly. Well, although we don't really know, it might be Adam Stumps Peter. It might be Peter, Little Peter, aces the test Wednesday. Dave. You might actually. I don't know though because only you know. So why don't you explain to the folks what the format's going to be and myself is... I've got three tracks lined up. Three tracks. Okay, three tracks lined up. By lined up, you mean I can't see them. You cannot see them. You don't know what they're going to be.
Starting point is 00:01:21 But I am going to get to listen to them, I think. You will. And they feature three different pianists. So just a regular bar of vote. And I'm going to ask you to name the pianists. Okay, do I get bonus points for naming the song, the songwriter, the other musicians perhaps the name of the album i predict you'll be able to name all of the songs okay for sure don't throw only softballs there's a couple softballs well i want i want to ease you in okay but i don't know maybe maybe these are all don't give me any hints either though this will see how it goes with this might not make it to air we'll see you ready they're listening to it now we've made it to air well we'll see we'll see we're jumping right in we're jumping right in well real quick our sponsor is open studio jazz
Starting point is 00:02:00 go to open studio jazz dot com i'm glad to check out a bunch of new things and if you get a chance if you want to go next level. You know, a lot of folks out here trying to go next level. I'm trying to go next level with things in my life. They don't want to stay the same level. They don't want to stay.
Starting point is 00:02:13 They want to go next level up, man. Why can't we just be happy with what we're doing? This is above leveling up. OpenCadiojazz.com slash pro. Not against anything. Just go there. You know what? Actually, don't go there.
Starting point is 00:02:25 You're not ready. You're not ready to go there. Stay away from slash pro. There you go. Okay. Let's do this. Blindfold test. All right, here we go.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Our first track. I feel like this is going to be a softball. Okay. I like it. Okay, I think I know who it is, but I don't think I've heard this probably some point, but not recently for sure. It's not in my musical. Whoa, great touch there. I think that's Kenny Kirkland.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Wheels are turning. Right? I think it's Kenny Kirkland. I think that's Bramford. And, I mean, I'm just going to guess Jeff Watts. But this is interesting. I don't think, I mean, I probably heard this, but it's been a long time. So I'm going more by the way they play.
Starting point is 00:04:05 The only thing that makes me think it might not be. Brant, let me listen some more. Oh, actually, I was going to say, yeah, that's Bramford, for sure. That's Kenny Kirk. But the thing about it is... Wow, one for one. I almost sounded like one of those notes was slightly... On the soprano was slightly out of tune, which is very...
Starting point is 00:04:24 And I mean, very... Yeah, very slight. And that could just be my ears in this room. That's what made me think it's not Bramford, but it's definitely Bramford. Kenny Kirkland, Jeff Watts. Let me see him and figure out the bass. Are you trying to get the whole band, dude? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:36 All you have to do is get the piano. That's which you got. It's Kenny Kirkland. Yeah. And what track is? I don't know the track. Deenda from Royal Garden Blues. Of course.
Starting point is 00:04:44 Yeah, okay, this is the old record. Yeah. His first, 90s, this is 80s. His first solo record as a leader. So I've heard this, but I probably haven't heard this in 20 years. I mean, it's Kenny Kirkland with that beautiful entry.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Right. As soon as he started playing, I thought it was him, but the fact that I didn't know what it was, it wasn't recognizable. It threw me off a little one. All right. One for one.
Starting point is 00:05:02 That might be Bob Hurst. I think that is Bob Hurst. Because that, this dude got the whole band. Is that Bob Hurst? It is Bob Hurst. Jeez, Louise. You know what?
Starting point is 00:05:10 I'm going to go back and check out that record, because I never listened to that a lot, but it's a great record. Kill it. I know it's a new record. All right. You ready? Yes. Number two.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Should I quit now while I'm ahead? You probably know this one, too. Blood Powell. Piano's out of tune. Let's see that A. Correct melody on. B's out of tune. But it kind of started like,
Starting point is 00:06:12 okay, so this sounds like, I thought it was an old recording at first. But I don't think it's more modern because I'm kind of listening to the sound. I'm trying not to give clues away with my face. Yeah. Okay. So that would be, that would be kind of some Benny Greenism here. But I think it's more whoever Benny Green is most influenced by. This is an old record.
Starting point is 00:06:49 It's got to be an old record. That's Philly Joe Jones. It's got to be Philly Joe, right? Is that Philly Joe Jones? Oh, you can't. Look at it. He's poker face. He's poker.
Starting point is 00:06:59 face. Okay, I can't believe I said maybe Benny Green, but that was some Benny Greenisms. Okay, who did Benny Green like? He liked. I love watching the gears turn. It's not Win Kelly, it's not Red Barley. Who else would be playing with Philly Joe Jones? Oh, I know what this is. See, I don't know this record. This is
Starting point is 00:07:21 my ignorance. So I'm having to piece together kind of with stylistic clues. This must be Phineas. Yes, he got it. Oh, you pieced that together. It is Philly Joe, two, and Paul Chambers. But that, I don't get credit for that because I figured it out from being Philly Joe Jones
Starting point is 00:07:36 and influencing Benny Green so I backed my way into that. That's Olio of course from a world of piano. Peter, I know this isn't one of your record like one of your... But you know what? I've listened to this record a lot but it's been a while and I mean... It's a great record. It is a great record.
Starting point is 00:07:50 Isn't that what... Yep. Yeah, I mean, you know what? I need to go back and listen these records more. It's so good, you know what I'm saying? Because Phineas, I love his playing, Finis. I need to learn how to say his name correctly. I got a lot of work in.
Starting point is 00:08:03 I've heard both are acceptable. Phineas or Finis. Apparently if you're in Memphis, it's finest. Well, they talk funny in Memphis. We know that. See how it goes. But, man, I would say you're two for two. I would give me a half a point for that at the most.
Starting point is 00:08:15 All right. Now, here's our final. Ready? Our final. So you thought these were going to be softballs. Is that Ray Brown? Just confirming that. I'll wait.
Starting point is 00:09:00 This is another record, I don't know. So I got to have to use context. There's a lot of pedal going on. Very present brush. There's clues. Stylistically, there's clues. A bit of a classical influence. Very light touch.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Very refined touch. What the hell? Was it one mic sitting right next to the snare drum and picking up the piano from across the stage? What's going on here? Man, I can kind of... All right, I don't know who this is. I mean, I'm going to guess...
Starting point is 00:10:01 I'm going to guess Arrow Garner. It'd be a good guess, actually. Really? It is... It is Nina Simone. an instrumental version this was a curveball for sure no but that's you know what
Starting point is 00:10:21 but there's I would have never guessed that not knowing it but it totally makes sense yeah yeah technique she didn't do a ton of instrumental track track but this is from live at town hall this was setting up a vocal version
Starting point is 00:10:32 of summertime and it's so moody this version yeah the mic being here far away all those like low pedal things that's very no and she had such great dramatic flare
Starting point is 00:10:44 with the with the the instrument and the range of it. Okay, that's a great one. I think I can officially say I stumped you on that one. Totally. But, man, I'm super... An arrow guard. I knew that wasn't a great guest, but it was the best one I could come on with that.
Starting point is 00:10:56 I think that's a pretty solid guess from what we heard, actually. I think that's a good one. Well, we'll go out on this. Woo! That actually might be Ray Brown. I don't know. I don't think it is. But what it sounded like at the beginning, it sounded like it was.
Starting point is 00:11:09 But I don't think... The more I heard it, I was like, no. Man, very impressive, Peter. I am now nervous as hell. about mine. So. Woo. Well, thank you for this, man.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Those are three dope tracks. Super fun, yeah. I'm looking forward to they listening to them. Should have just kept listening. No, on my own time. All right, well, until Friday in which I will either be stumping at, it'll probably be a combination like this. This, I'd say it was a combo.
Starting point is 00:11:37 A combo of... I think two out of three, I think you win the day. Wow, that's 66%. That gets you a D. Peter doesn't like D. I don't like D. Until next time, you'll hear it.
