Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, Peter. Hey. It's that time of the week. What time? It's time for the carousel. The carousel or is it the cavalcade or the clavacord? It's Hater Monday. And I'm Peter Martin.
Starting point is 00:00:27 And you're listening to the ULhair podcast. Music advice. Coming at you. Coming at you today is sponsored by Open Studio. Go to Open Studio Jazz for all your jazz lessons needs, as we like to say around here, Peter. Yes. Peter, it's time for the carousel of comments. This is our favorite feature.
Starting point is 00:00:43 No, it's not. It's not. But it's really fun. It is. Sometimes it is. We've got some good ones lined up. I know. Because they're usually...
Starting point is 00:00:48 You're excited. Look at you. You have like a Cheshire cat. I know. I know. So for those of you don't know, it's a new feature we put where we like to bring out our positive, but mostly our challenging comments from our YouTube channel, from our podcast, from our various outlets. You know, we put ourselves out there. We do put ourselves up.
Starting point is 00:01:07 We are. We are. We are. We are. We are. We are. And we have very low self-esteem. So it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a lot.
Starting point is 00:01:14 combustible combination of emotions over here. It's really good. So we're going to try to be with it today. I do a lot on our YouTube channel. I put myself out there quite a bit. You do. And I do a lot with like music theory stuff, right? So I'm kind of putting my opinions on how music is made out there. And I get a lot of pushback. And it can be, you know, to my fragile artist ego, I'm like, well, you're not right. I'm right. And you don't. Well, and if we've learned nothing else, it's that saying that they're my opinions,
Starting point is 00:01:44 It doesn't help at all. It doesn't help at all. You know, there's just just the facts, ma'am. But it is really fun to just to see how people respond to things that you put out there. And so that's what we'll do. So usually I get some really funny dust. We'll call them dusty comments because they're from our dustiest of users. Well, the thing is too, like we're going to highlight the negative because, well, that's funny because we're not really negative guys. But it's just, it's funny stuff, the hating.
Starting point is 00:02:08 But we have a bunch of like, we have some of the wittiest, most astute. But they're often in the chat. Well, yeah, but by far, though, we get more than our fair share of positive feedback. Right. But haven't you noticed it's more in line during a live event we're doing on YouTube? Yeah, because what we just finished. The super fans are there. Yeah, they just can't get enough.
Starting point is 00:02:27 But they're so smart. They're so great. They're wonderful. They're the best. They're the best. But let's talk about some other comments now. Not everybody's a super fan, Peter. I don't know if you know that.
Starting point is 00:02:35 Not everybody's a super fan. That's right. You know what? You can please all the people none of the time. Some of the people half of the time. I don't know. That's right. That's right.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Interesting. So should we jump right in? Let's jump right in. What do you got? Okay. Well, what we were just talking about here, because I don't even understand this, but I want to read it because it sounds interesting.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Okay. So we did an episode, I guess this was two weeks ago now. I mean, we've been talking about this now. Well, first of all, it's been a popular episode for it. It's been a very popular episode. How bad is the real book?
Starting point is 00:03:06 Yeah. How bad is the real book, actually. It keeps on giving for our cavalcade of comments. That's right. And basically, we went through and Adam you sourced some old-timey recordings of some standards that are kind of perceived to be major culprits in the real book or the fake book in terms of like incorrect changes or being played in a certain way that they
Starting point is 00:03:34 really haven't shouldn't need to be so we didn't necessarily say we're going to go back and find out their real changes but we went back to some older recordings and really we're just trying to explore some interesting musical areas to explore as opposed to just blindly following in the real book. Yeah, and I tried to make it, here's the thing is like if you make it, try to make it clear, like we're really not trying to say these are the ultimate original changes. We were just kind of like doing a bit of exploration for our own purposes. No, we were trying to say they were the ultimate penultimate. No, no, we were. No, we were not saying that.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Okay. I'm looking at Alex Hill's comment, though. Oh, yeah, yeah. Because I don't totally understand this. So Alex said, how's the B flat diminished in Stella a 5 of 5? It's the common tone diminished chord, right? The tritone in that chord is D flat and A double flat, not the same tritone in B flat 7, which is D and A flat, the real 505.
Starting point is 00:04:32 I don't get it. Yeah, I don't, I'm a little confused with what Alex was talking about how B flat 7 would have been the 505. Because what we're talking about, just for some context here, we're talking about, how, you know, usually Stella by Starlight, people play this first chord as E half diminished, right? E minor 7 flat 5. Yeah. But the original changes are, and this is kind of well
Starting point is 00:04:50 known and talked about amongst a lot of jazz musician, the first chord is B flat diminished, originally written. However, what a lot of people, I don't think, have heard, is that the earliest recorded version that I could find of this tune that was a hit on recording was from Frank Sinatra.
Starting point is 00:05:07 And the second change was not seen minor seven, it was straight to the five, straight to F7. So it went B flat diminished seven to F7. So I think Alex might have been confused about what I was talking about with five of five. What I really mean here is the B flat seven is made up of B flat D flat E and G. Now these are the same notes as E diminished seven, right? Which is often used this sort of E diminished seven in place of like a C7 flat nine, right? Which is the five of F7. So this B flat diminished 7
Starting point is 00:05:42 in all, for all intents and purposes, is functioning as a five chord going to F7. Nice. That's what I meant. I got it. And I think Alex got it, but... I think that's good. Now, should we jump down to the meat of the...
Starting point is 00:05:54 Oh, that wasn't meaty enough for you? Well, no, that was just the entree. As we said. So we have some comments on the same episode. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We've got Claptrap Rapture that says, really like the idea of the video. In execution, the guy on the right,
Starting point is 00:06:08 needs to stop noodling around through both the recordings we're trying to listen to and the guy on the left when he's trying to make a point. So this is obviously your cousin or your father or mother or wife.
Starting point is 00:06:20 I got a lot of family in here then. This is obviously somebody closely associated with you because as I thought back to the perspective of the video, per chance was on the right. At the right, as we would say, en francais.
Starting point is 00:06:34 So he's talking about me. He's so good at French. I was noodling. What does that mean, noodling. You were playing over the recordings. I don't mind that at all.
Starting point is 00:06:42 Am I bothering you? No, you were exploring. No, not at all. I was trying to figure out what was going on. Man, can I just say something? We have two MIDI-Hammer 88s. It's part of our thing. Weighted keys in here,
Starting point is 00:06:52 facing each other. This was my vision so that Peter Martin could do things like what he's doing now. They could play over me, and I could be like, oh, yeah, you want to, you know, we could do our chick, Herbie. Right.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Exactly. You know. Well, other people think, instead of chick Herbie, they were thinking, guy on right noodling while guy on left is talking. Well, thank goodness, though, because this guy was the only person who would think of that. Am I right?
Starting point is 00:07:18 No, you would be wrong. I'd be wrong. Yeah, there's several other. We, you know, we've focused on one. Why go, why go down that rabbit hole? Several others, really? But this, okay, but there was another comment, this started coming down heavy on me for some reason. I made a grammatical error. Look, this is an off-the-cuff, unscripted show, okay?
Starting point is 00:07:37 I'm not too proud to admit I'm not a college graduate and I did graduate from public high school as a due but I did not get a college degree in English literature so sue me he's banging the table
Starting point is 00:07:47 your honor sue me object sue me I'm not a grammarian so I said overruled did we pass the statue of limitations
Starting point is 00:07:57 just as a you know what so yeah it's statute I believe I believe the statute of limitations is at the Louvre and it's
Starting point is 00:08:06 It was Michelangelo. That's right. Well, be careful how you say that Italian gentleman's name. You might not have to pronounce it. Sorry, Michelangelo. Sorry, pardon. Okay. But it's just, it's a guy, and he's holding up a sign that's saying limitations.
Starting point is 00:08:20 Yeah. It's a statue of limitations. That's right, right. Forget about it. So did that incorrectly? And I love, he put the time code in. At 3228, Your Honor, I said, did we pass the statue of limitations instead of statute? Okay.
Starting point is 00:08:33 So point well taken. But then the next part is what really. guess me. This is the first video I've seen by these guys. The musical part was interesting, but I think I won't be watching any others because as it went on, there was just too much of Peter being a jackass to wade through. Well, now he knows my name at least. I'm not just the guy on the right. For Christ's sake, he was noodling and trying to figure out changes as Adam was playing the example recording or as Adam was trying to demonstrate something himself, inconsiderate. Also, how does a jazz player not know how to pronounce Hammerstein, not Hammerstein? First of all,
Starting point is 00:09:06 What? WTF on that. But I guess so. That's really funny, man. Yeah. That's unfortunate. But I love the fact that he may not be listening, he or she may not be listening, watching us anymore. Fred Buzz 59's definitely a he. No offense, but that's.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Yeah, that's true. It's true. You know what I'm saying? I'm just saying. Yeah, yeah. It's all good. Yeah. There's so much good stuff here.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Actually, someone has, check out on the same episode, check out Eric Dolphy's version of Softly. Because we cover Softly's on Morning. Johnride from the Illinois concert. Herbie Hancock on piano. We love Herbie. Yeah. We just did an hour and a half of. And the bridge is a series of chromatically ascending diminished seventh chords after E flat.
Starting point is 00:09:47 Nice. So like, that can't be true. I'm going to have to check that out. Yeah. Hold on. We'll go check that. Let's see. Boom, boom, boom.
Starting point is 00:10:00 What else you're seeing that you like here? Well, I mean, a lot of people on this episode have done, you know, we kind of asked, like, give us your opinion on some of these, on some of these, on some of these dusty versions of the real book tunes in the real book tune. And then someone has recommended to find the podcast 99% invisible number 438 on the real book, which I'm going to check it out. Anything that someone has devoted an entire podcast episode to the real book like us, I'm down for it.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Okay. This is a comment. So we're still getting some nice comments even as of yesterday to your wonderful Chadez quiet storm cords. The very popular, one of our most popular videos of the last couple of months. That was a fun video. Yeah. And this is, we're going to wait into some politically treacherous waters. So I don't know what the statute of limitations on that is.
Starting point is 00:10:48 How'd you like that? Yeah, yeah. But what do you think about this? Wouldn't normally say this, but Chadee, in this context, should probably use the pronouns, them, they, as in the band. Yeah. That's an interesting take on that. I don't think that's correct, though. Well.
Starting point is 00:11:03 In the current. So Chadee is technically the one. Right. Even though that's not her like real name that is the name that she goes and on her Wikipedia page she's known as Chadee and she goes by Chade in interviews and things like that. Yeah. But it's also the band and so that's kind of the most pushback I've gotten from that video is that I didn't give enough love. Who's in her band by the way? To the band. Oh you don't know her band? No hey listen. Peter and I we you and I have both worked for great singers. Yes. And we've both been the guy in the band who helps the singers make chords right because sometimes vocalists they're
Starting point is 00:11:37 We've been lucky enough to work some really great musicians who are also vocalists, but nobody's better at chords than the pianists usually. We're the kings of the chords, you know what I mean? And so it's been our jobs to spruce up chords. Right. So I appreciate her band and that the video was about her harmony, but I also know that there's no way that Shadee who wrote the lyrics and the melodies didn't say that, that, what you're doing there?
Starting point is 00:12:00 Yeah, that, that, that. I want that. Not that, not that. Not that. I don't want to hear this. No. I don't want to hear that, you chord nerd. I want to hear this.
Starting point is 00:12:09 Yeah. Yeah. That. And that guy, no. Get him out of here. Not him. Yeah, you. Yes, you stay.
Starting point is 00:12:15 So, I mean, I don't know if that's the case. And believe me, I'm, I love her band. I think they have like an amazing pocket. I think they create such a great vibe. They're great players, obviously. So much respect. No disrespect to the band at all. But, you know, the idea is that when you think Shadee, I was going very broad here.
Starting point is 00:12:32 You think Shadee, you don't think, you know, the bass player all the time. I was really just trying to be. very general with it. So apologies if that ruffled any feathers, but I'm not, I'm not, I would do it the same way again, is what I'm saying. It's all good. Okay, so here was just a quick comment on an older video that I don't even remember that we did when we were really in an exploratory phase of our. By the way, can I just say, Peter? Yeah. Before you go on, I'm sorry to interrupt, but I just, I love the carousel. I love that we just take some time here to shout out our haters. It's fantastic. But no, but you know what? Only about half of what we're
Starting point is 00:13:06 saying is hating. Dominate your Lidian dominance. Do you remember that one? No. I think that might have been a solo mine. I don't know. But it's funny because the comment was, I could just kind of probably play it even as we go,
Starting point is 00:13:21 but I like videos with both of you most, which is funny because most of the videos that we do are with both of us. But oddly enough, some of our solo ones, this one is with both of us. So they're saying that they like this one. And this is, I'm just looking at it. It's obviously pre-COVID because we are right jammed.
Starting point is 00:13:41 We have the desk with no sneeze guard between us. Yeah, yeah. The tiny desk. It's the tiny desk, right. But we appreciate that. So this is not a hater comment. Thank you, O.M. We like doing it together too.
Starting point is 00:13:52 The only reason we've done some of the you'll hear at episodes apart were due to travel or gig schedules that we couldn't come together. But ironically, some of our most popular YouTube videos of the you'll hear variety, probably our most popular one ever was a solo version that you did. So although OM, you like us both together. The people have spoken on that. So I don't know what that means. Thank goodness we do tons separate and together.
Starting point is 00:14:16 That's right. Although, buddy, you need to up your solo game here. It's coming. You got to do some stuff, man. You're so good at it. Is that, are we, is this a cavalcade of advice between us? No, I'm sorry. I hope I'm not overstepping.
Starting point is 00:14:28 But I just, for me, because I want to see your solo videos. I want to see you. It's coming. Someone I made a video. I do it every Friday night for, 58 weeks straight. Is that good enough? Those are good enough.
Starting point is 00:14:38 No, those you said, point well taken. That's amazing. Can all be GPS masters twice a week? I am a fairy machine. Hit coming at you. Speaking of that. Man, it's a cavalcade of comments going back and forth
Starting point is 00:14:53 between us now. That's good, man. It's like a tennis match. That's right. So I made a video last week called Magic Voicing System. It's ever heard of it. Based off my course,
Starting point is 00:15:01 magic voicing system, which is a system of magic cords that put together. voicing that I put together. I like when you did the, I think it was on an early one, you're like, they're magic. And you had Doug Henson. Yeah, they're. You probably didn't even know that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:15 His name's Doug Henson. I had no idea. Yeah. So Tonal State says, take a shot every time he says magic voicing system. And he says also, thanks. See, that's what I'm saying. That's not hatred. That's just fun.
Starting point is 00:15:26 Yeah. So I saw one here, which is, oh yeah, remember when I mentioned about the Boodoo Khan? Yeah. We were talking about the different. I had some headphones or something I could remember. So this is Boudoukan. Professor Hamamoto gave us the correct pronunciation.
Starting point is 00:15:41 I'm assuming Booduk. No, Boudocon. Budo con. Budo con. Japanese traditional martial arts auditorium. Alternationalists got pissed off when rock groups started being booked there, i.e. cheap trick. Well, I mean, do they, does sheep trick need to be booked? Everyone will be pissed off if they're booked in there.
Starting point is 00:15:59 But it's all good now. Thanks for the excellent discussion. I've been playing Nineteenia's intro incorrectly. for years. Here is where a real book comes in handy. I can blame its transcription instead of owning up to my own lazy year. But that's great.
Starting point is 00:16:12 And that was so cool that, you know, you highlighted that with the PDF and stuff. But I think that's where we kind of shine and going over some of those fun things. That was from our seven classic intros from two weeks ago. I mean, we've had so many comments.
Starting point is 00:16:23 So let's do one more here on this real book one because there's actually been a slew of comments about how it's okay that the real book is, like the comment basically goes. goes like this. And I'm not saying that they're all boomers. Oh, okay. No, I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. Yeah. But it basically goes like this. Like, hey, what's wrong with the real book? If you want to learn it, listen to the record,
Starting point is 00:16:47 which is what we did. I know. That was what the episode was about. They were like, hey, stop talking bad about the real book. I know. I know. It was six of those. We people were feeling self, what do you call it, self implication? I think so. They were projecting a little bit. They felt like we were pointing at them directly, which we were, which we were probably. Good.
Starting point is 00:17:11 And, you know, sometimes it's just fun to read some of this stuff and, like, say, I don't know what the hell they're talking about. Bluesy double stops. Now, I know that was one of our pop. That was a long time ago, but that's been one of our more popular episodes. And it's kind of fun because that's one of our concepts. I think that we sort of, you know, organically
Starting point is 00:17:27 were attracted to coming up with, not like, oh, what are we going to do? It was just like something that we both did and recognized in different things and put the video together. But they said, well, I truly wasn't expecting that intro. And so I don't remember what we did. And so that's fun, right? We can get away with a good intro a couple times a year, I think. It's fine.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Yeah. Like today's. Do you remember today's intro? It was amazing. No. Oh, on the Herbie episode. Well, what's interesting about that, if folks are listening to this as this cavalcade or carousel of comments drops, that's going to be coming out Thursday in case you missed the YouTube.
Starting point is 00:18:03 and it's going to be, I think it's one of our best episodes. And we had such a good time celebrating the birth of Mr. Herbie Hank. That's right. Well, thanks, everybody. These are so much fun. Join us next week while we find our most entertaining and a little bit cutting. Yeah, a little bit. Comments.
Starting point is 00:18:18 And you know what? We apologize for this being weighted towards hatred of me, the guy on the right, this week. I don't know. We promise next week to go back to hating the guy on the left somehow in the comments. So if you can help me out with that, just kidding. Is he? Are you calling out? Are you calling from my head?
Starting point is 00:18:32 No, I'm just saying we got. to have balance. The universe needs balance, man. Now, we love you guys. Thank you. Please keep the comments going. They're super fun, super entertaining. They really are fun. And we'll keep the episodes coming. Good and bad. Thanks, everybody. Until next time. You'll hear it.
