Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, Peter. Hey, Adam. You know what time of the weekend is? It's Debenair Monday. You threw me with the voice. Sorry. That doesn't match. I'm Adam Manus.
Starting point is 00:00:27 And I'm Peter Martin. And you're listening to the You'll Hear a podcast. Music advice and comment commentary. We love the comment Mondays. It's really, really fun. Peter, we're going to focus on one video in particular for our cavalcade of comments because it's a very funny concept. The comments on the video from last week's
Starting point is 00:00:48 live on YouTube, you'll hear it, which ended up being our Thursday podcast episode. Yes. Which sounds confusing. And by the way, there might be... I'm so confused. There might be even more more changes. But this was the one that was all about how to play the bridge of rhythm changes. How to play
Starting point is 00:01:04 the bridge... What? What? How to play the bridge of... That was last week? That was last week. Remember what did the great... We listened to Olio. Olio. On Miles Davis. Oh, yes. Of course. This was not that long ago. It wasn't. Literally one week ago.
Starting point is 00:01:17 I don't know what's going on, man. Gotcha. Okay. So we're talking about that episode or are we talking about... We're talking about the comments on that episode because... Why didn't you tell me this before we started? Why am I playing ketchup here? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Well, the thing is, is there was a lot of debate in the comment section about... You'll never going to believe this. The banter. Yes. Some people, like Lawrence Seiden... You really focus in on that gentleman. Well, because he kind of sums it up. He said, and I quote, you guys waste so much time with drivel, I can't watch it.
Starting point is 00:01:50 Please stick to the music. So Lawrence is obviously not a you'll hear it listener. Right. Because drivel is at the heart of the you'll hear it podcast. This podcast empire was built on drivel, okay? Like a Jenga game. That's right. You take out the dribble, the whole thing falls down.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Hold up, hold. I'm looking, okay, I found it. I'm just, I'm disliking his comment. But I'm also going to love it with a heart. So that's going to confuse them a little bit. Well, this is why it's so confusing to me, because then just down below that, ST says, I love your show. The schick is one of the best parts.
Starting point is 00:02:21 It's what makes it open studio. Otherwise, you're just two dudes analyzing a transcription. I can get that from a book. But strangely, not on YouTube, apparently. More scintillating banter and witty repartee, please. Oh, repartee. I love it when you speak French to me. Get this.
Starting point is 00:02:37 In fact, I'd like to see each episode spoken in a genre style, like, say, a 1930s detective movie, or perhaps a 1600s, theater style in iambic pentameter or maybe even a little Swedish absurdist. Adam, hey Peter, guess what? Peter laying on his back with his arms and legs in the air.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Who cares? I've turned into a bug. There's an apple stock on my carapus. And my family hides being a darker woman who eventually kill me. Adam. And today we're learning to play over the changes to giant steps. He said Q theme, but. Oh, Q theme, got it.
Starting point is 00:03:09 So get this. So ST said that. And then someone said just below that, sorry, but I don't find the bedroom music. at all. 10 wasted minutes before we get started. It's really, man.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Well, we edit that out, though. Right? No, they're not, they're talking about, we edit like 30 minutes out. Oh, that's not enough? No, they want this thing edited down to just the importance stuff? Dude, they're talking about this shit here.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Oh, come on. I know. Come on, man. What are we jazz robots for your analytical pleasure? Pleasure. So I like your comment here. I like to highlight your comment.
Starting point is 00:03:40 This comment section is so confusing. I mean, I was, I was watching it happening. I was because, so, Someone says, your banter at the start was unfunny and a waste of time. Get to the point. That guy sounds like he'd be fun to get a cocktail with. That's right.
Starting point is 00:03:53 He needs about nine before he gets to be fun. Back to Lawrence of the siden, Lawrence. You guys waste so much time with dribble. I can't watch it. Please stick in the music. Okay, we waste so much time and you can't watch it, yet you've got time to make a comment on it. I know.
Starting point is 00:04:06 Embodied conducting, who always has something not nice to say, says, nice work, but too much schick up front. You almost lost me. you know what now that i'm starting to see so many negative comments about the steak maybe they're right Alan wheeler says great start a lot of fun thank you Alan okay there you go see it's we're teetering back and four de ray has kind of a neutral stance your podcast is very good i've listened to i've learned to just skip the first five minutes that's right you know what i mean you got you got to know how to that's that's the way i approach professional baseball games i'm going to be
Starting point is 00:04:39 honest right now like i arrive late have a couple beers and leave early and then it's a tolerable couple of hours of time. This one is just, this guy sounds like we just, we just beat him down to the point where he has no love of anything anymore. He says, I'm not a Native American. By that, I think he means not. No, yeah, I don't think he means. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:59 I'm sorry to say, for me, guys, the first half was just a waste of time. Now, I think he did make this comment when it was still very long. Yeah. Too much small talk, no musical content. The second half was perhaps better. I don't know. I don't know. He's not, he's not sold.
Starting point is 00:05:14 He's definitely not sold on the first half. The second half is a question mark. So I just want to say, I mean, listen, if you're coming to the You'll Hear a podcast, even live on YouTube, and you expect thoughtful musical commentary? You will get that. But that is not going to be a preponderance of the evidence. That's going to be but a small percentage of what's happening. It's not going to be. You got to take it with the spin drift, folks.
Starting point is 00:05:38 That's right. You got to take it all. I mean, it's like if you're getting a, you know, a burger with fully loaded or something. There's going to be some meat in there, but there's going to be a lot of bun. Yeah. There's going to be a lot of just random vegetables and grilled things and mustard on its own. No.
Starting point is 00:05:54 Right? But on a burger, I'm going to love it. That's right. Helps to add to the sauce. Just like the witty repartre. What is that guy? Repartre. Repartre.
Starting point is 00:06:03 I think they were looking for a little bit more repertoire for us. But this was cool. You posed a nice question up top. What's your favorite version of rhythm changes? Let us know. So let's get back into the meat, as it were. Yeah. The Impossible Burger.
Starting point is 00:06:15 What is your favorite version of Vooden Chains? Well, actually, my, not necessarily my, well, yeah, my favorite, I think is the Eternal Triangle. Oh, that's good one. I love that. But we didn't really get into that because that wasn't, oh, somebody did put, sorry, I forgot to write Eternal Triangle by Sunny Stitt, former Sunny Rod. Yeah, I love that version. I love that. Like, when I first heard that, that was like, I was like, what?
Starting point is 00:06:37 Is that even legal? You know, but we didn't talk about it because I think we were talking about all dominant court. That was the whole. We were talking about the bridge. Yeah. I'm thinking, you know what? That's more of just like, you know, down and gorgeous descending situation.
Starting point is 00:06:49 You know what sticks out for me is another miles, but it's the theme. Oh, yeah. On plug nickel. Oh, there's a bunch of them, right? Oh, there's like three of them and they're all like so burning, man. Yeah, because they were like just firing the whole set. I think by the time they got,
Starting point is 00:07:03 because that was usually their closer type situation, right? Cool. So shall we, I know we were just going to, I think that's enough. Yeah, we're just dipping our toe in today. That's all we could take. So there was some great comments I just wanted to highlight because some of our proudest work on a serious level Has been these releases of the beautiful performances The Fred Hirsch
Starting point is 00:07:24 Yeah And the round midnight each one just gets better And you can actually in the course you get access to all of them Plus the notation and everything Not even going to go in But the round midnight was incredible And the um You know it's good
Starting point is 00:07:40 The Fred Hurrush performance video is released you know it's good because I can't, I can barely make it to the end of the video right going over to the piano. Right. Because you get so inspired. You're like, I want to try all of this. Yeah. Can I play a little bit here? Are we hooked in there that I can do a little audio coming out of here? Yeah, go for it.
Starting point is 00:07:57 So this is fun. This is, I think one of our, sorry, I didn't play quick enough, my bad. So So, wah, wah, wah, wah, look out. Okay. So the, what we call the sound is, your
Starting point is 00:08:12 signature, which was from a few. years ago. Yep. Christian McBride, one of our OG two-minute jazzes, that percolates up because it's such a great video,
Starting point is 00:08:21 but in case you haven't heard it or seen it, you can check it out, but just listening to it is great. It always puts a smile on my face. Your sound is your signature. Is that a good enough bass sound for you? Is that something I can interest you in?
Starting point is 00:08:35 A lot of things you can do. I'd be very interested in that. I'll tell you a few things you don't need to do. Who's an engineer? You don't need to raise your strings way high off the thing. That's Luke Aaron's for you. Wow.
Starting point is 00:08:47 You don't have to pull the strings so far back like you're about to shoot off an arrow. So the fun thing about this, I've told this story before. I don't know if I've told it on here. Christian just freeballed this whole thing. He just made this up. Yeah. I just suggesting him, I was like, man, why don't you do like a two-minute jet? I said, I do these little video.
Starting point is 00:09:06 This is, you know, a few years ago. Yeah. And he's like, all right, cool. What do you want me to talk about? And you were like, you said your sound is your signature a couple minutes ago. Exactly. Yeah, I remember this. Yeah, I said, well, you.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Yeah, you had this great concept in one of your lessons about your sound as your signature. And he's like, okay, cool. Play it all the way to the end and we'll turn up the volume at the end because a very funny thing happens. You don't need to do any of that. Keep your strings at a nice height. Height. I look at a point nine, one whole centimeter off the fingerboard. What a sound.
Starting point is 00:09:38 Play without an amp, especially when you practice. This is not edited. A lot of folks think we edit it. I mean, it's edited, but this is one tape. It's just, he just, and literally one. Like he just picked up his face like, yeah, I'll do this. Yeah. Too much while you play.
Starting point is 00:09:52 You don't want to see the guys doing the bird when they play. Start flapping the hand. It comes like a chicken. They think somehow physically it makes them swing harder. Just makes you tired. That's awesome. You know, that movement. Just right in there.
Starting point is 00:10:13 Keep your thumb locked. That's what the last cover was about the whoops. 128. Whoops. Not going all in. Was that you in the background there? I was laughing. I think I was like,
Starting point is 00:11:13 because I was so excited to be there. That was amazing. Nice. Yeah, I think, you know, listening back to that, I walk a lot of baselines now
Starting point is 00:11:22 for the day they got a practice session, you know, like accompanying our practices. Yeah. And, yep. And I've ripped off everything from that. If we play any kind of blues,
Starting point is 00:11:34 I rip off all those, all that language that Christian was ripping there. It's so good. I'll just see if I can. So, Yeah, that was the whoops comment. So cool. That sounds awesome.
Starting point is 00:11:45 Sayla es, he's natural. Poor Halloween. Incredible. Incredible. That's, he is a natural guy, and he's incredible. I can now play upright. Hallelujah. Seriously, this is gold.
Starting point is 00:11:57 I'm a pianist and I try by all means not to be emotional when I play. Don't know how that's connected with this video. That's another thing with YouTube videos. When you get the cavalcade going, sometimes I'm like, do you know what your response? Like the comments, I appreciate them taking the time, but it'll have nothing to do with the video. And then the funny ones are the best. All right, Christian, I'll retire the chicken wing.
Starting point is 00:12:18 Can't lie, I'm going to miss it, though. Ha ha. Hey. See changing lives out there. Yeah. Sheesh. This gives the coolest advice lessons I've ever seen. This is odd, but complimentary.
Starting point is 00:12:31 This video is equally as hilarious as informative. I thank you, teacher. Yeah. That's interesting. Yeah. Oh, baby. I hear a blues of calling Toss salads and scrambled eggs
Starting point is 00:12:43 Can we go out There's one comment I want to talk about here Because it's actually It's happening It happened a while ago But the video that it's a comment on It's happening now as we're recording this It's from Bob DeBoo's
Starting point is 00:12:54 Triplit drop Yes right It's a triplet Drop it like a triplet So it's premiering right now But we you know We posted that it's premiering right now About eight hours ago
Starting point is 00:13:05 And as soon as we posted Someone named Jazz Guitar Scrapbook Commented bucket of dung. Because you know how there's all these automotapiac like spikid do? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or I like my favorite bucket the dung.
Starting point is 00:13:19 Bobby de boo is a good one. Bobby to boo. He's a, he is a spikid to do. But bucket of dung is not one I've ever heard. That's a good one. I like it. Very good. All right, y'all.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Till tomorrow next week. Sometime. You'll hear it.
