I'm Adam S.
And I'm Peter Martin.
And you're listening to the You'll Hear at podcast.
Daily Jazz advice coming at you.
Season two.
Season two.
That's right.
We're kicking off season two.
We're doing it.
How much jazz advice do people need?
Well, we're going to see now.
At least one season.
That's right.
Right.
We're very excited to be back by popular demand and not just from our popular demand.
From actually others popular demand.
You know, my favorite part about this is that the season is so arbitrary.
It's like you went on vacation and we were.
like, well, I guess that wraps up season one.
Yeah.
But you know what?
It kind of worked out.
Like we're coming, there's some other things have sort of lined up.
I was thinking, I think your kids just went back to school the other day.
Yeah, yeah.
One of my kids went back to school today, actually.
Nice.
So another one, we're dropping off at college soon.
So, I mean, it's kind of, you know, it's a seasonal thing.
There's a little bit of fall in the air in the greater St. Louis area.
I know.
Doesn't it always, it always feels like change is going to come.
Do you remember, like, record companies used to release the important records in the fall?
That's right.
And I feel like it's because people, you feel like things are changing.
Like you feel like you're starting a life in the fall, right?
The caterpillars are metamorphosizing.
And so is the podcast.
You go back to school and the girl that you liked from last spring is like, you see her again?
Right.
And she's ugly.
Oh, no.
Yeah.
Well, yeah, this is great.
I mean, I think we've learned a lot from season one.
Yeah.
We both last week took our week off and listened to every single.
episode individual. No, I'm just kidding. We didn't do that. We're still winging it. We're still winging it.
We're still winging it because you'll hear it. No, we did the best of, which was really fun.
And, you know, I didn't realize actually as I was kind of designing that first best of how much we've done.
I mean, 100 and what is it, Andrew, 170 something episodes.
Yeah. I mean, it's like a lot, a lot of material. And we definitely like.
We dropped some knowledge up in there.
Drop knowledge. We covered a lot of ground. Yeah. A lot of best of seven.
list that didn't have seven.
Yeah.
A lot of great suggestions from our listeners.
And in fact, I think season two is going to be more refined and even better because of
what we've learned, you know, from feedback from the listeners and for just doing this,
you know, as much as we've been doing it.
We're giving the people what they want.
And we're doubling down on that.
I mean, we're like if you start, if we feel like people are starting to write in that
they want us to give the best seven, you know, I'm looking out the window now to get an idea.
You know, types of cumulus clouds.
We'll do it.
We will do it.
We are responsive.
No, but it is going to, we're up in our quality game.
I don't know if you notice, but got some new microphones.
Do we want to give a shout-out?
No, we didn't get them for free, so we can't give a shout-out.
But if we do shout out of Avantone, maybe they will send this.
Yeah, please.
Actually, every microphone in Open Studio that we record all these courses on,
everyone except for like three are Avantones.
Yeah.
We love them.
And I wanted to get those, the black cylinder microphone.
Oh, I was going to say, I wasn't going to say their name
the company. Oh, I mean, yeah, crap. Yeah, yeah. Well, and, but you've informed me that these are actually
for what we're doing here vocally or even superior to those. These are so good. Because I've seen
some high-end podcasts with those sure mics. Yeah, those sound great, but these, these are,
these are great mics. And for everybody listening who is into home recording, you know,
the bang for your buck for this, for like a vocal mic, guitar mic, I use this on bass when I record.
Wow. On upright bass, it sounds awesome. Yeah. Anyway, shout out to Avant tone for making,
quality products and an affordable price.
That's right. It's killing.
And then one thing that's still happening, even though we're, there's a little bit of a chill in
the air, just a slight. I don't know if you noticed this morning. I was up early.
Yeah, yeah.
About 545, 6 a.m. We were actually about 58 degrees here.
Fahrenheit. I know.
Fahrenheit. Big shout out to our international listeners that don't know what I'm talking about.
Yeah. So it was like 50 degrees is very hot.
While global warming, farming.
Yeah. But we're still, we have our, we love plugging products.
that we buy.
Yeah, shout out to Cranick and Bach,
which is our big upright piano here.
That's right.
We have a new podcast set up here,
a little physical space.
Big shout out to YouTube over there.
If Andrew plus record on the camera.
Shut up, Google.
What's up, Google?
Keep searching.
Keep ranking, bro.
I don't think they're paying much attention to our little podcast.
Shout out to our $4 ice coffee.
Squatters.
Squatters.
Yeah, yeah.
It's awesome.
And hey, you know, shout out to Open Studio for making all this happen.
That's right.
This podcast is brought to you by Open Studio.
We make online jazz courses here.
And, you know, we try not to hawk them too much here on the podcast because we like to give some info out for free.
But if you're interested in continuing your jazz education online, hit up Open Studio.
So, Pete, what can we expect from season two?
What are we going to get more of?
What are we going to get less of?
Well, I think we're going to get more of the.
kind of direct answers to the questions because we have such great listeners, you know, as we've
noticed that in such intelligent, insightful questions, I mean, a lot of them, as I'm listening
to them and, you know, as we read them and stuff, I think we both experience this, it really
puts a smile on our face and kind of gets us thinking and learning, you know, again, hopefully
we're always learning.
I mean, we both really believe in that.
And so, but these kinds of questions really, I mean, we have a lot of humor, of course,
with the sevens and all this kind of stuff.
but there's a lot of
actionable things.
I know for me,
when I give out some of the information
when it's really,
I feel like it's in my wheelhouse,
it always gets me thinking about things
to practice on and to do again,
just talking about things
kind of gets you doing that.
So I think we're going to really
continue to go deep on the answers.
And another area I think we're going to do
is the solo analysis.
I think we've only done one, actually,
which was the Herbie Hancock,
all of you,
which was from a question.
And we got such great response.
It was so fun for us to do that.
That's a great episode, yeah.
Yeah.
So the plan is that we'll do at least one a week.
You know, maybe we'll make like Wednesday a solo analysis day.
Love it.
And we could kind of rotate between solos that you really know and love and ones that I know and love.
And it could be fun and just kind of go through and really break them down.
Because a lot of times, and, you know, we've got a lot of questions about transcribing and stuff.
We're going to continue to go deep on that.
Yeah.
But a lot of times just the analysis part, we always preach that that's so important.
And so we're going to kind of walk the listeners through, whether you know the solos or not, you know, maybe it's a new discovery for you.
We're going to hit some some really famous, you know, I think my next one I'd like to be, we haven't even talked about this, but I was going to do Winton Kelly on Freddie Freeloader, which is a very well-known iconic solo.
Yeah.
And you've done stuff on Freddie Free Lover before.
You've done like a blog post, I remember on Open Studio.
Right.
Transcription.
Transcription.
Yeah.
it. I, you know, and I agree with you that that is such an important solo, I think, for every jazz pianist, especially, but for any jazz musician.
Right.
For learning about groove. You know, as I'm thinking here about things we're going to hit in season two, however long that may be.
Right. I think I have a vacation scheduled sometime in November, so we...
Yeah, we're going to go deep into the winter, at least.
We'll see. Or maybe two weeks, and then season three.
No, but, you know, one of the, I think, the cool things about having this daily podcast and
And people have commented or written in and said, like, you know,
what do you guys talk about every day?
Like, how are you going to do this every day or whatever?
But, I mean, that's the thing with, like, being a musician,
it's not like being a professional tennis player
where your career is going to be done by your early 30s
because each body can't handle it anymore.
You know, this is like a lifelong pursuit.
You can still make real progress well into your old age.
I mean, I had a friend.
At least to 39, I think.
That's kind of the limit, but yeah.
No, it's true, though.
Like, I have a friend who is, I have known for a while,
and he heard me for the first time a couple of weeks ago
and he was like, you sound like you've really been working at.
I'm like, yeah, man.
He's like, that's inspiring that, you know,
you're almost 40 and you can still progress.
But I kind of feel like, you know,
it is a daily, a weekly, a yearly thing that we're always trying to get better.
We're always trying to make it work.
So I feel like we could sit here and talk about
how to achieve that forever.
Well, are you available every weekday for the next 20 weeks?
Because we could actually do that as the show.
You know them, bro.
Okay.
Cool.
Well, we have a new logo.
Did we talk about that yet?
I don't think so.
Okay, we got a new logo.
So a lot of new things here, but not new hosts because we're going to keep that.
We're going to keep that the same.
Although we do have guest hosts coming up.
That's right.
We got some great guests coming on.
We got the solo analysis.
I think anything else we need to hit?
I don't think so.
Just, you know, our sevens are going to stay the same.
Right.
Oh, I have a special surprise for you.
I haven't even told you about it.
Would this be a good time to announce it on our first episode here?
No, let's wait.
Oh, okay.
I'm just kidding.
I'm just kidding.
Go ahead, go ahead.
All right, ready?
Bo-da-bo-da-bo-da-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo.
We are now on Stitcher.
That's great because we've been telling everybody we're on Stitcher for like a month and a half.
Exactly.
We actually are on Stitcher because I heard you, I think it was in the best of.
You thought I wasn't listening as I was up hiking in Colorado last week, but I actually was.
You kind of made a joke about what is Stitcher.
Now, you may not know what it is, but we are actually on it now.
But isn't it like the jankiest of podcast hosting?
I don't know.
Shout out to Stitcher, I don't know.
I got to check it out.
Actually, it's kind of a cool platform, and we're part of them now.
So we'll see.
We're going to see if we're going to get some.
We're going to check the analytics.
I don't know what their feedback is like to let us know how many listeners.
But the other area that's kind of been growing for us sort of organically,
without us even noticing is Spotify.
Oh, cool.
Big shout out to Spotify.
We're trying to spread the word for them
because they've only got like 300 million listeners around the world,
so we're trying to help them out.
No, but we're, you know, they're kind of getting into the podcast game
and we're there and kind of climbing the jazz podcast charts, as it were.
We've got a bunch of listeners over there.
Well, how do we climb those charts, man?
I don't know, man.
We're just kind of, we just put it out there.
Really, word of mouth.
Is it something that people can do?
They can actually.
That would be, yeah.
Now, the seven star, our yearning for seven star reviews does not, that does not change from season one to two.
Like never.
Yeah.
In fact, I'm reinvigorated for this because we've been getting a bunch.
We actually got one recently, I think it was in a comment where a listener said it was a particular episode they really liked.
I think it was the one about the bassists.
Yep.
Base souls that were okay, that are okay.
Yeah, yeah.
And he said 10 stars for that episode, seven stars for all the other ones.
Interesting.
Yeah.
So he likes the kind of like throwing shade episodes.
Yeah, I don't know if it's specifically throwing shade against base player.
What's wrong with the other episodes?
I don't know.
They're not 10 star worthy?
Well, that's funny because now seven stars used to be good enough for us, but apparently it's not.
I mean, people start throwing in 10 and half.
This is going to get out of control.
That's right.
But no, we've been getting some, some, even some great reviews as we took our off week.
We've got Ann Truitt from the United States of America.
I've heard of that.
who gave us a five-star review on iTunes,
Jazzy banter with a healthy helping of friendly rapport.
That's the title.
This has to be one of my favorite podcasts to listen to each weekday.
As a jazz student, this podcast is a helpful tool to encourage my growth.
And as someone who just needs something to brighten up,
is brighten up my day from time to time.
The banter between Adam and Peter is so fun and delightful.
I honestly think you could know nothing about jazz
and still enjoy the friendly rapport.
and back and forth between the two of them.
The ice coffee, hold on.
Yep.
And random phone going off.
SFX make it easily a seven-star podcast.
What's S-F-X?
Sound effects.
Sound effects, of course.
I knew that.
I think he's talking about my phone.
He or she and True it.
That's right.
That was a fun episode, remember?
Yeah, yeah.
Man, it took us so long to set that up, and it worked.
And then we've got WS3.
What's up?
W.S.3 from the United States of America.
Peter and Adam have great info to share and they keep it light and fun.
Thanks guys for this, informative and fun.
Thank you so much.
So, yeah, we're enjoying the reviews.
We love the feedback.
Thank you guys so much.
We love the U.S. reviews.
We're getting some love from a couple different countries.
Big shout out, always to Canada.
Some of our most loyal viewers are from there.
We love you, Canada.
The UK is coming in strong.
Australia.
Yeah.
But Italy, coming strong.
I love Italy.
Considering we don't say a lot of Italian words on this podcast.
And so we really appreciate you guys, you know, taking the time and energy to listen in English, which is probably a drag for you.
So, uh, Babbane and gratsy mele to Italy.
That's great, man.
All right.
Any other countries we want to shout out?
I mean, Japan, want to shout out Japan.
And that's another, we have some listeners there.
And I know that's another one where if you're listening to English, do my agato.
Yeah.
Good on you.
Yeah.
But yeah, man, you know, I just want to say that like, keep, keep sending your questions, keep sending your voicemail.
keep stopping in and saying hi keep you know writing the reviews and the ratings and all that
stuff that really keeps us going you know that that helps us keeps the party train moving helps the
party train to chug on chew chew chew down the track yeah because really one of the great things and
I you know as we said before we're both big fans of podcasts in general and the way that this
thing works now I'm such a fan of disseminating information in this medium and I really
think that, I mean, it's not new, but there's a lot of people coming on board the podcast game now.
My mom is like, who have you ever? She just told me the other day. She's like, do you know about
podcast? I was like, yeah, I have a podcast. Oh, really? I'd love to, you know, have a listen sometime.
But so she just got on the podcast train. So we know it's going somewhere. But I think it's such an
authentic, I mean, if you love ours, that's great, but for whatever you like. Yeah. And the way that,
you know, the whole thing with the ratings and reviews, that just helps spread it around because the algorithms,
you know, it really, I think it's sort of, it makes it easier for you to find things that you might be interested in,
which is ultimately what we want.
We want people listening to this that, you know, we're talking about things.
You know, one thing we haven't really mentioned is that Andrew and I this morning built this.
We're going to call it, we got to name this podcast hut.
I was going to call it a hovel.
Podcast hovel.
What the hell is a cave?
I'm a little bit.
The podcave.
The podcave.
Podcave.
Podcave.
Podcave.
We're in our...
Andrew Checkpodcape.com.
See if we can get that.
We're our open studio podcave.
No, we built this sort of ramshackle.
We took two sound,
sound baffling walls and some things that we used to have on the windows.
And a...
And an old piano, yeah.
An old piano.
Which is funny because we've got all these great sound absorbing things up here.
And then we got this great hard surface in the back.
Makes no sense.
Yeah.
But, yeah, hopefully it all sounds.
better. You know, we're in Open City, our normal
suit, we have 35 foot high ceilings.
Right. So it's easy to get that, like, hollow
cave sound, but now we're all
upon you.
Anyway, yeah, keep the
messages coming, keep the questions coming,
keep the ratings and reviews coming,
and we're going to keep this podcast rolling for season two.
Yeah, and tomorrow we're going to be back to our normal
format. I just realized this is the first time we did a podcast
and actually didn't give any daily jazz advice.
This was all witty banter. Yeah, it's all witty banter.
But don't worry. Tomorrow we'll be back with our regular
format and you'll hear it.
