Starting point is 00:00:01 Hey, Adam. Yeah. Did you get some shopping done over the weekend? Oh, I got a lot of shopping done, my friend. Did I see you, I think I saw you at midnight at Target parking lot on Brentwood Boulevard. Was that you? I got all your gifts. Ooh, gifts or gifts?
Starting point is 00:00:13 Both. I'm Adam Anas. I'm Peter Martin. And you're listening to the You'll Hear podcast. Daily music advice coming at you right here on Monday morning. Oh, we're just trying a few things out. We're just trying to pass. It's a shopping season.
Starting point is 00:00:42 We're wearing it like a hat. A hat within a hat. A hat on a hat. We're going to put a hat on it. How many times did we put hats on hats? Porked a hat on a barret. On the Yule Here podcast. We're the master of adding interesting hats.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Do you remember that book? And it wasn't Cat in the Hat, but it was by the, it wasn't Dr. Seuss. But remember those hardback books. When you were growing up, you were reading books on iPads, weren't you? Oh, come on. Because you're the world's oldest millennial. We've established that. Yeah, but there were no iPads in the late 70s, early 80s.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Well, they were. They might not have been any in Jefferson County. Is that what you're saying? Not yet. No. No, but so this is the thing. There was a book, you know, the little hardcover, like the style of Cat and the hat
Starting point is 00:01:23 and the other Doctor Suit classics, but there was two characters. It was like a goat and a rabbit or something that walked down the street. You know, everything would kind of rhyme. Sure. And it was like... None of what you said just rhymed, by the way. Well, I'm talking about the book. I'm not talking about me. But then he came down and he says, hello, hello. They're meeting on the street. And then they said, do you like my hat? I do not.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Goodbye, goodbye. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the book. is still around. Like we had it for our kids. You did? Yeah. Man, you're so literary. But I forget what it's called, but I know exactly what you're talking about. Do you like my hat? I do not like your hat. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So we and Kelly always have a joke about that. You know, we try something on it. Do you like my pants? I do not. Goodbye. Goodbye. My daughter would say,
Starting point is 00:01:59 I do not like that hat and then crack herself up, like laughing. Do we have a sponsor for today's episode? We do have a sponsor. Now, I do like that for six minutes or... We're not going to do as much, but this is any tune, and it's a music player built for musicians. I finally found the tagline and listed very clearly at the top of the page
Starting point is 00:02:17 because we went in in red, which was great too. But that's really what it is. This is an app for your iPhone, for your Android, or your Mac or Windows or Linux. I don't know about that. I'm stretching now. We have played around with it on the Mac and it really, it is a player. I love that they're called it's a music player. It's a player? It's not a playa, it's a
Starting point is 00:02:35 player, but it is for musicians and it's really for serious musicians. And it's for, and it really covers from beginner to the most advanced. Like, you could never outgrow this app. Yeah, by serious, I mean, if you're serious about getting better, you should have this tool. This is a tool. For sure. This is a tool.
Starting point is 00:02:49 This is not a recreational thing, although it's fun to play with. But this is really a tool about improvement, not home improvement, but musician improvement, your improvement. And, you know, it slows things down. But that really is kind of underselling what it does. This thing that you showed me last week, I was playing with over the weekend. It's just amazing where you can take out. I mean, that's like the, that's the final frontier. That's what Star Trek and Captain Nimoy and all that were going for.
Starting point is 00:03:12 They never found it. This app. Remember him? Yeah. Oh no, he wasn't captive. Leonard, Leonard. Leonard. Oh, boy.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Anyway, no, the ability to take, you know, to transcribe... Your pop culture chops are... Horace Silver. I mean, I'm thinking about this, like, transcribe Horace Silver solo. Yep. Anyone, anybody do you, Oscar Peterson, any of the greats. And then you can take their playing out
Starting point is 00:03:36 and play with the rhythm section what you just learned. Or just isolate them. Or just hear exactly all that. I mean, I was always trying to hear McCoy Tiner's left hand. I'm like, I love you, Elvin, but that symbol's right there. You can take that out.
Starting point is 00:03:47 So check that out, any tune. And if you want to go to, if you want to check it out, please go to anytune. Dot, us slash you'll hear it. They've got a nice little, you'll hear it, partnership, sponsorship page that they prepared. The nice folks over there. And it could be a nice gift, too, for the musical love for. For sure. We are in gift giving season.
Starting point is 00:04:06 That's right. That's right. We're going to talk about that a little bit more at the end of the episode. Yeah, you know, it's a special. It's a special Monday, though. It is a special. It's the cyber truck. Monday.
Starting point is 00:04:15 No. Yeah, CyberTruck. Just Cyber Monday. Oh, other than CyberTruck does look pretty rad. It's pretty ugly.
Starting point is 00:04:21 Oh, you think so? I'm already sold on it. I'm already, I've already, when I first thought I was like, that is ugly. So you put a deposit down on it? No, of course not. No, that means you're sold on it.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Well, we're going to be giving away one cyber truck. No, no, no, no, no, no, man. We're giving a sweepstakes. But we do have, no. No, we do have a giveaway. We have a giveaway, but that's over, by the way. Is it over? Monday, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:42 Oh, it's over? Yeah, yeah. But we have to choose, I don't know if that's true, Adam. Why don't you riff on that while I check the actual date here? Well, what we do have is an offer for our you'll hear at listeners for Cyber Monday. Ooh, hello. Yeah. We're going to give that the end of the day.
Starting point is 00:04:56 We'll give that at the end of the show. And that's exclusive for Open Studio, right? Right now, you'll hear it members. It is. We are so disorganized today. This is Monday. It was a big shopping weekend. I'm still full of Tofurkey.
Starting point is 00:05:07 Right. But we have a speak pipe from Lucas. Let's check it out. Hi, guys. This is Lucas from Germany. I am loving the pentatonic boot camp. Since you called it volume 1, it kind of begs the question. What are some of the themes you're considering for future volumes?
Starting point is 00:05:23 You know, just so that I can start to plan the upcoming year. Nice, Lucas. I totally get this. And we're trying to plan our upcoming year. What Lucas is referring to is our jazz piano technique, volume 1, pentatonic course. It really is kind of a boot camp where you practice with me and you. Yes. in these guided practice sessions
Starting point is 00:05:43 where we like hold your hand through these I think it's like 20 practice sessions is pretty intense and we actually improved we noticed as we were producing the course because we were practicing like three days yeah we have a lot of practice in it we did 20 days worth of practice but
Starting point is 00:05:59 but it's been a really big hit for open studio for us here and we thought we would just take some time today to sort of ask you are you'll hear at listeners and our open studio members if you are what do you want from us in 2020? Because we have a bunch of stuff on deck to make
Starting point is 00:06:16 that we know that people will like, that we like. But I think it's always good to get some feedback. Like if you're an open studio member and you've taken maybe the jazz piano method or jazz piano technique or jazz piano for beginners or any of our piano courses, or any of our courses, what would you find useful for us to make? If you're just a, you'll hear it, listener.
Starting point is 00:06:34 Yes. What kind of episodes would you find useful to listen to? I love that. You know? Yeah. And, you know, we've been talking about, about ideas and we like to be ahead of the game here. I know it seems like we plan every episode as we go. It does not seem like that. It doesn't seem like that. Not at all. No, but we're really thinking
Starting point is 00:06:50 about 2020 and I love this idea of and yeah, and it doesn't have to be just for open studio members. We have a lot of plans on things we want to do with our free content, which we have a lot of. You'll hear it.com. The whole thing is free. Yeah, you'll hear it.com is our blog and our podcast here that you're already listening to so you know about, but the blog is free and there's a lot of stuff up there. Right. And we almost think like what's kind of organizing. organically working already is like the open studio course, especially when we get into the jazz piano technique, pentatonic,
Starting point is 00:07:15 and the further volumes that we will be doing is like the really deep dive. Like you're ready to, like you have the A, the Intitune app, like you're that kind of mentality. You're going next level. When you're ready to kick it up. You know what?
Starting point is 00:07:28 It's kind of like getting a personal trainer. Yeah. You know, either for weightlifting or like a running coach. Like a Peloton situation. A peloton, right. Yeah. Can you get in shape without it? Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:07:40 But if you want to go next level, that's Open Studio Jazz. But we're very committed to really continuing to up the amount of content we have on the, you'll hear it both the blog. And we've already have some other guests. It's kind of gone under the radar because we haven't promoted it. Oh, this could be a nice little promotional episode. Why not? Well, I thought we would just kind of explain what we've released in 2019.
Starting point is 00:07:59 That could be relevant for your requests in 2020. Yeah. And as you're listening to this, you know, to your point earlier, is like just really be thinking and drop in the comments below or just send them to. us at uh... Yeah, drop us a message at you'll hear
Starting point is 00:08:13 at dot com. There you go. You know? You know? But, so let's talk about a little bit what we, what we have this year
Starting point is 00:08:18 that if you haven't seen yet, you should check out. So first is the free content. All the stuff on YouTube, you know, we put out so many YouTube videos. We pulled back a little bit in the last few weeks,
Starting point is 00:08:27 but put out so many free YouTube videos of the podcast. Yeah. And of the two minute jazz, this is your storied series yeah, free content. You can go to our Open Studio YouTube page
Starting point is 00:08:39 and check out all of that free content. Right. That was a big thing we put out today. And we have, and the two minutes from many of our artists that I've asked to do. Jeff Kizzer's done some cool ones. And we're actually getting longer. We're even considering maybe even changing the name because already they're all longer than two minutes.
Starting point is 00:08:53 I abandoned the two minutes before. That was at a time when people's attention span was a little lower. It turns out people's attention span is getting longer. It's getting longer. And a lot of people think the internet is dulling people's attention spans. Some people, but I don't know. I mean, we're looking at intern Ryan over here. He's listening intently to every word.
Starting point is 00:09:10 said for minute, well, he's required to. He's daydreaming right now. Oh, he is, okay. Definitely. Yeah, but I think, no, I think what it is is people when it's something they're passionate about, which we all are about this music, and just getting better as musicians, you know, it's almost like time stands still, you know,
Starting point is 00:09:26 and you're in there working for an hour, for two hours, and so, yeah, your attention span is short when you're just being thrown a bunch of different things and sort of dopamine hits to do this and this little task and, oh, this is cool, and that looks pretty, and that sounds good. But, you know, what is great about this, you'll hear a community and we hear it in the questions that we get.
Starting point is 00:09:46 I mean, Lucas, you could hear just kind of how he was talking is a serious commitment to growing and having fun and being part of a community, but like helping each other to grow. And so, you know, if that's longer videos for the two-minute jazz, then that's what we're going to do. Yeah. Well, so let's get to some of our open studio content that we released in 2019. Let's start with piano. So we released Jeffrey Kieser's Advanced Jazz Piano. which was a big hit for us and really a cool high-level course for advanced players. We released a jazz piano jumpstart, which was kind of the opposite of that.
Starting point is 00:10:21 Like from the very entry, I can play maybe, like, I know where Middle C is, but I don't know much really than that. And I certainly don't know how to improvise or play. And as I recall, that kind of came out of really what we were hearing from folks that did, excuse me, jazz piano for beginners, wanting something to lead them up to that point. Right, right. So it was fun because it gave us a real place almost to start going backwards,
Starting point is 00:10:46 like this is where we want to get you. And we said seven weeks, right? Yeah, seven weeks. It's a seven week jumpstart course. Yep. We released Brazilian jazz piano from Adieu Ribeiro. Or sorry, from Helio Alas. We'll get to Adu in a minute.
Starting point is 00:10:59 Yep. We released a Brazilian rhythm section course, which includes piano. Yes. We released, what else did we do? Oh, we did, when we started some mini courses. We started, I started a course, a series of courses called Jazz Piano Basics. I did Volume 1, which is Lead Sheet Breakdown, Breaking Down How to Approach a Lead Sheet,
Starting point is 00:11:17 and then I did volume two, left-hand voicings, all about left-hand voicings. Those are sort of lower-priced entry-level courses. Right. We did, and then we did the Jazz Piano Technique, Volume 1, Pentatonics, and that's been a massive success for us. So we really have done some cool stuff this year for pianists, and there's a ton of stuff. But we want to know from those,
Starting point is 00:11:36 from what you just heard, or maybe you've checked them out, maybe you haven't. By the way, now would be a good time, Cyber Monday to go check it out. Oh, yeah, if you haven't. But wait until then an episode
Starting point is 00:11:44 because we got the, so you can get the deal. Today. Today is Cyber Monday. Let us know what, if you're a customer, what course do you want to see next? Yes.
Starting point is 00:11:52 If you're not a member yet at Open Studio, what would, like, bring you over? What would you want to see? That would you be like, oh, I could put down some money for that. Right. Because we want to know. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:12:03 Yeah. And, you know, if it's a matter of, like, a certain artist that you always want it to learn from, that's fine. It doesn't have to be from us or from our beautiful stable of artists. Or if it's just a certain concept. A concept or a technique or a style or something. Yeah. Yeah, we want to hear from you. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:12:21 Cool. Thank you, Lucas, for the question. Yes. I can tell you that for the next volume of jazz piano technique, you know, we did pentatonics. Yeah. I think we're going to go in even smaller increments. probably do scales, but we'll probably do some sort of scales more based on jazz music than like just the major scale.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Exactly. Yeah, it's not going to be just running up and down. Diminish scales. Yep. You know, the blues scale maybe, you know, we'll see. Yep. And some different, you know, ways to practice them that apply specifically to jazz. And it would, again, be GPS guided practice session based.
Starting point is 00:12:56 That's the whole point. Turns out people do like us to hold their hands. Yeah, who knew? Certain areas we go, it's not legal, but, but it's, but it's, you know, it's. It turns out people do want us to hold their hands. And then for the jazz piano basics, let me know what you want to seek. You know, I've done the lead sheet breakdown. I've done the left hand voicings.
Starting point is 00:13:11 Is there another basic concept you'd like explained in a very concise way? And then just in general, what do you want to see from Peter Martin? What would you like to see from Jeffrey Keiser? What would you like to see from Elie? What would you like to see from Gregory Hutchinson? We have all these folks at our disposal. Yeah, and just in case you were thinking of some of these things, we should just talk real quick about what's coming soon, coming very soon, like from Jeffrey Keezer, for example.
Starting point is 00:13:31 So Jeffrey Keiser has a solo piano mini-course coming out. And then he also has... Elements of solo piano? Elements of solo piano. Then he also has an arranging and composition course, which is actually... It's almost bigger than a course. It's a video.
Starting point is 00:13:43 It's a documentary. It's a course on how to arrange and compose. And it's really... It's the most ambitious thing we've ever done. I'm super excited to launch that. And then we have Rhythm Section Fundamentals, Volume 2, but hang on to that because I might change the title of that one. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:13:59 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Let's talk about it on air. Why not? Oh, yeah, we are. That's good. Yeah, and the rhythm section stuff, but the Brazilian rhythm section,
Starting point is 00:14:07 the original rhythm section fundamentals, we've been getting kind of a resurgent, a lot of interest in that, so we'll probably look at that, especially if you guys are interested, in delving more into that about where we really break down, not only how you play in a rhythm section,
Starting point is 00:14:19 but different specific approaches and what the relationship, stuff that's really of value to all the different instruments, not just piano focused at all. For sure, for sure. And for our drummers and bass players out right now,
Starting point is 00:14:31 is Art of Swing with Ruben Rogers, Ulysses Owens Jr. Right. And that's sort of, and that came out of the rhythm section fundamentals, but even getting a little bit more. What's that relationship like? Yeah, let's get rid of the piano and the guitar, get in the way. Let's get to the real rhythm section, you know. Let's get rid of the nerds.
Starting point is 00:14:47 That's right. All right, good stuff. Cool. All right, so we set them up. We set them up. They know what we have. They've stayed this long. We're listening to what they want.
Starting point is 00:14:57 If someone wanted to go over and get a deal, say on the piano access pass or the all access pass. If you missed the big Black Friday, look, we had so many new members. And welcome to everyone in case you're a new listener as well. It's very exciting. You know, we look at this time every year. And Black Friday was really, you know, was the best deals, the best savings. We were able to offer all year.
Starting point is 00:15:18 But today, for the you'll hear at listeners, we want to, you know, we're not going to quite hit that what we were at last weekend. But I think we're going to make this very nice in case you didn't get a chance to pick up something. Or in case you want to have, you know, to get a gift. say maybe you got a course and you like you like I know someone that would really like this we're going to offer the same oh no you know what did we say we're doing 47 percent we always like to seven you like that seven yeah and so we're doing 47 percent which is you know a really nice deal all today um put in the promo code at checkout happy practicing one word one word it is two words but shove it together and pretend like it's one word no spaces yeah happy practicing non case
Starting point is 00:15:57 specific so don't even worry about exactly but you must spell it correctly yeah Yeah. But I mean, you know, it's kind of one of our mantras around here is like we're really big believers in dutiful, dutiful and, and see, I don't even know what that means. You know, like it's your duty. But I mean, you know, rigid and dogmatic even at times practice, but always happy. Happy because you're progressing. You're getting better. Like all this, the reason we put these things is to help you to get better. And look, sometimes, to be honest, a little bit self-serving and stuff we want to practice too. But at least we're all getting better. You know what I'm saying? Agreed. And you know what? In the spirit of. what do you want from us? You know what I propose we do? Yeah. Let's turn back the speak pipe. Let's turn back on the speak pipe.
Starting point is 00:16:36 Okay. On you'll hear it.com. Oh, we're going to do it. We've hit it for a while. Okay, we did hide it. We pulled back on the speak pipe. But let's, at least till the end of the year, because we want people to tell us what they want, right?
Starting point is 00:16:48 That's right. Let's put it on, you'll go to you'll hear it.com. Leave us a voice message. Leave us a speak pipe. Tell us what you want. Or just ask us a question. We'll take any kind of question. You just called an audible.
Starting point is 00:16:58 I did just call an audible. And I just made a pun. Bam. Bam. So let's do it. Go to you'll hearat.com and leave us your question or comment or request. That's right. And just one last little reminder. Final day for our big savings, 47% off everything. This is workbooks, physical products, everything that we have, like every course. You know, a lot of these things I'm getting, it's like 50% off annual, but not this. Everything on the site is 47% off. Today only. We'll be over tomorrow. Although tomorrow we've got something very exciting. We'll talk about that, but that's not going to be about discount. It's going to be about helping others because it's giving Tuesday tomorrow. But just put in happy practicing as a promo code and check out the gifts. That's, you know, this is a great time to sort of knock some things off your list, I would say. And you'll hear it.
