Hey, Peter.
Hey.
Big deep breath in here.
We're open.
We have our windows open.
Okay, exhale.
Waiting to exhale.
Oh, like Angela Basset?
Exactly.
Okay.
Basset.
Basset.
I don't speak French.
I'm Adamannis.
And I'm Peter Martin.
And you'll listen to the you'll hear it podcast.
Two pianists, talking music.
Talking music.
We got to speak into the pipe today.
Yeah.
Well, let folks know in case this is their inaugural.
listening to this fine podcast and YouTube video.
Yeah.
Look at this.
I know.
This is so awesome.
Dude, look at this.
We got it.
So we're working on getting on getting.
Thank you, Daylight Savings time.
I know that's a controversial thing.
And thank you, Tina, from Sunshine Draperies.
We're going to give them a free commercial because we need to get some shades up in here.
You're not.
Maybe we can get sponsored by Sunshine Draperies because we really need some, we need to get this.
So even if it's blazing hot volcano sun outside, we can still keep the windows open.
Because I want to be with the people, Peter.
Volcanoes?
I want to, you know, I want to be with the people.
Yeah.
Kababi studio back over.
Come on, man.
Big shout out to Kabobab.
He's actually coming on the pod this week.
I know.
I can't wait to talk to him.
We're going to tease that out there.
But we do have a speak pipe today.
And for those of you that this is your inaugural listening.
If you're a ship.
A virginal attendant to this podcast.
Then this is a chance for you to call in and become part of the show.
If you're worthy, many apply, few are worthy.
Well, Mike is definitely worthy here.
Mike has a great question.
Because he went to you'll hear at dot com and left an audio message for us.
That's right.
So this is Mike, and he's got a little bit of a challenge.
Go to You'll Hear.com and leave us your speakbook.
Hi, you guys.
This is Mike from Los Angeles.
Longtime listener.
I love the podcast.
Thanks again for everything you guys do.
I just wanted to see if you guys could try something on the show.
I love, like, when you walk into a coffee shop and they're playing jazz in the background,
and you can recognize the song just off of the chord changes in the middle of the solo.
It's not off of the head of the song, just off the changes.
I was wondering if you guys could kind of test each other by doing that,
playing back some obscure standards,
and it could be by any performer,
and just kind of testing each other out
and seeing if the other person can recognize what song it is
just based off the core change.
Cleaning up his glasses.
He's going to take me to school here.
I got a feeling.
Starting a couple minutes in.
Okay.
So it's in the middle of somebody solo
and see if you guys can recognize.
it's just based off the core changes.
It's a great idea.
Would you guys be willing to do that?
Yes.
It would be really fun.
Yes.
This is not a lot.
That's a good way.
It might be interested.
All right.
Good luck.
I know you're confused here.
Adam.
Mike is not,
that was recorded.
I love how you're talking to him like he's.
I know.
I was like,
Hey,
hey,
thank you, Mike.
Hey,
no, it's all good, man.
We're hanging up on you now,
Mike.
Thanks, Mike from L.A.
All right about the,
the quarter inch of rain
you guys received recently.
I know,
freaking out about it.
All right,
I love this idea.
So you want to do one each and see if we can stump each other?
Yeah.
I have one ready.
Now, full disclosure.
Yeah.
This is for real, right?
Producer.
I left the studio so you could get yours together.
And I was out of the studio full disclosure, taking a leak while you did mine.
I'm always nervous, Caleb, when we do these that I'm going to lose, like, I'm going to face plan.
Well, it's a lose win thing.
Isn't it, though?
Well, this one's pretty.
Yeah.
No, but this is, what we don't know is how, I asked Caleb, I said, did he make a really hard
one for me?
Because I didn't want to go overboard, but I wanted to.
get us into the same playing field
and Caleb was inconclusive.
He's holding it close to the vest.
He has knowledge that both of us don't have.
Thank you. You want to go first?
I go first. You're ready? So you're going to play and I'm going to listen.
All right, here we go. What is this standard?
Wait, wait, wait. So we're naming the song.
We're not naming the performer or the...
Yeah, you just have to recognize the song from the changes.
But you're starting during a solo.
I'm starting, yeah. A minute in.
I'm not going to tell you.
A little hints. Okay.
No.
I feel like,
Stablemates.
Yeah.
I should have stopped it.
Well, the thing is, I knew, I knew one, but I was trying to remember the title.
Yeah.
I'm like, you know, I'm like.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Stablemates.
That's Stephen Fifeke, young pianist, really killing.
No idea who that was.
Yeah, he sounds great, though.
Yeah.
That's, uh, he just released that this year.
That's Stephen Fifeke's,
stablemates, check it out.
Actually, we'll put a link here so you can check out both of these.
That's good.
That wasn't that hard.
So I feel, I think I think I'm, I think I'm in the same range.
I mean, that was hard to get.
Like, if you had played it for 10 seconds or five seconds, it would have been tricky.
No, I'm super nervous.
It's a funny number of bars in that.
That's what helped me, too.
I can't even think.
Yeah, when I knew when the head came, like when the symbol changed and you could really find the form.
Okay.
Okay.
I'm nervous, but okay.
Okay.
Yeah, kind of.
I don't know.
Go ahead.
Wait, this is a live.
Well, it's not alive, but I mean.
It's exciting.
I'm excited.
Yeah.
I mean.
And would that be something you might be interested.
Yeah.
Okay.
Of course.
Here we go.
All right.
I'm going to give you a hint.
Okay.
This is...
I choose.
To get started, let's do it.
I've never seen you so nervous.
I'm going to give you a big hint.
You didn't give me any hints for the record.
Yeah, well, you didn't need it.
Here's a hint.
This is a standard.
It's known as a jazz standard from the Tin Pan Alley period.
Actually, I don't know.
What is the Tin Pan Alley period?
Come on.
Just play the right.
Just play the song.
And it is played by...
Would that help you?
Yeah.
A jazz group.
Oh, give me a break.
That you may have heard.
You may not.
I think you have.
Okay.
I think you have. But maybe not.
All right.
Depends.
Keith Jarrett.
I took a trip on a train.
Moon shining down on some little town.
Oh, yeah.
What's the name of the tune?
I thought about you.
Oh, dang.
I was going to say the lyrics outside.
He's such a melodic player.
He was playing the melody in there.
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, was he playing the melody?
Kind of, yeah.
Oh, okay.
Let's throw another one.
That's okay.
You got it.
You got it.
I'm ready to go.
All right, Mike, we're going to do two.
He was so nervous.
I'm so nervous.
Here comes the fast.
Okay, well, let's do five more because now I'm cocky.
It was like I was getting ready and you see I'm about to throw the baseball and I pull a softball out and throw it upside down.
This is good.
Okay, you got it.
You got it?
Oh, is it my turn?
Yeah.
Okay.
It's a complicated thing.
Back and forth.
I've got one up though if you're ready.
Got one up.
All right.
Hold on.
That's okay.
Oh, is that me?
Hold on real quick.
I'm going to come.
I'm going to go a little bit.
If you go harder, I'm going to go harder.
No, that's why I'm really...
No, I'm going to try to match the level,
because I feel like I went too easy there.
Let me try this one.
I'm going to, okay, I got one for you.
Hold on, I'm going to start it in solo.
This is not what I want.
This is not what I want.
You go, you go, you go.
This is not good.
That's because I think it's all melody,
so that's not going to help.
But that sounds good.
No, no, I know.
I know.
I got one.
I'm going to go kind of,
I'm going to say this is sort of middle down the road,
but it doesn't matter what I say,
because it matters.
What you're going to say?
Here we go.
Autumn in New York.
What is the name of the song, though?
Okay, I messed up.
I'm joking.
I know.
This is more...
Okay, we play another part.
This is confusing one.
You already heard the other part.
I don't know.
I'm going to say right now,
I'm not going to get the title of the song.
Blame it on my youth.
Yeah.
Okay, I'm going to give you one.
This is not that hard.
I can't find.
He's too damn melodic.
I know.
That's what I'm saying.
Let's do any more Keith.
I know.
All right.
This one, I should not.
This should be right in the middle of a solo.
This might be a new feature for it.
Playing Roller?
I'm going to back.
it up to the second.
All right, here we go.
Oh, this is...
Is that Grooving High?
Close.
I could see where you would think that.
What's it called?
That's Groovin'Huy.
No, sorry.
Oh, play the long time.
What do you talk about?
It's four.
Oh, four.
Damn.
My bad.
Hey, it's out of there.
Play four.
Can we get this segment over with?
All right, well, maybe this should be a regular.
All right, we got to do rules.
But I was playing it.
I'm, yeah, you know,
definitely.
I mean, but I had blame it on my youth.
I change you.
I know.
Of course, Sunny's playing the right.
All right.
Let's do one more.
Way to go, Sunny.
Rule of three here.
Rule of three.
Okay.
One more.
One more.
Wait, can I do one for you?
We go back and forth, back and forth.
You've already did your second one for me, and I didn't get it.
It was blaming on my youth.
But you just did my second one for me.
Oh, yeah.
So let's do one more each.
No, but you just played one for me.
Yeah, that was your second one.
Because we skipped me because I was like, I don't like this one.
Okay, go ahead.
Cool.
Boom, boom, boom.
I got one.
You ready?
Yeah.
Okay.
This is going to be hard.
Not good.
Yeah.
This is a giveaway.
You do know it.
That's a giveaway then.
Are you going to get the beginning?
Sure?
Yeah.
No, I don't know it.
I mean, I know.
Win Kelly.
Close enough.
They backed each other up in the Miles Davis band.
Sorry with the fringe on time.
Yeah.
I mean, those are the kind of tunes that I know.
I know, but I don't know.
But also, if somebody calls it, I'm like, oh, yeah, I know it.
And as soon as I hear the melody, I will remember the change that I don't really know it.
And the changes are also fairly ambiguous.
It's just like, there's not a lot of big landmarks.
It's not like stablemates where it's like big landmarks.
Can I do a new kind of newish standard?
Okay.
Last one.
Ready?
Come on.
It's dinner time, but, you know.
Okay, we're going to jump ahead.
I'm not a fan of tunes I don't know.
So please pick one.
You definitely know this tune.
Okay, good.
But it's kind of like that one.
It's, yeah, just check it.
This is hard.
This is really hard.
I would never get this.
Kenny?
It's Herbie.
So I got to give you a lot of hints.
It's still going to be hard to get.
It's Herbie and it's a Stevie Wonder tune.
Oh, that's too many hits.
I wouldn't get it.
I mean, I would because I kind of know this record.
Maybe if I recognize, I'm going to play in the beginning.
It's still hard.
Do I do?
Uh-uh.
That's a good guess.
Yeah.
This is such a grand arrangement, but it's so like obtuse kind of, or just circling, you know.
I see how it is, man.
I got you next episode.
I got you.
Well, this is a fun one.
We want to go out on a fun one.
This is a great record.
You got a bad girl.
Yeah, yeah.
How in the hell am I supposed to recognize that?
I know, you dropped it in the middle.
This is like burn out.
Brazilian man?
What the fuck?
Could have been a lot of me.
Wow.
That was fun, right?
That was fun.
Oh, by the way, do we love Herbie Hancock?
Are we a fan of Herbie Hancock?
I'm not a fan of...
Not being a fan.
I am a fan.
I'm going to throw something out there for our dear listeners.
I wanted to go on a quest to get Herbie on.
We're going on a quest.
We're on the pie.
You were kind of against it.
To be...
What?
Well, you were like, oh, that's easy.
Hold on.
Hold on.
Hold on.
No, no.
Dear listener, let me tell you exactly how this was framed.
It was pitched to me in a pitch meeting by Peter.
He's like, let's go on a quest to find Herbie.
Like, film it.
And me and you were like trying to find Herbie.
And I was like, Peter, we know people who know her.
We can literally call Herbie if we want it.
We can email Herbie.
Go to the YouTube and drop in the comments.
If you've listened as far, thank you for being here.
The quest.
If you want us to go on a quest for Herbie.
Like we're going to get into like an old roadster and hit the road looking for.
That sounds fun.
It does sound fun, actually.
Okay.
Two jazz musicians in cars looking for Herbie Hancock.
Yeah, let's do it.
Until next time.
Go on your thing.
Unbelievable.
Can you tell what's anything?
Michael Brecker?
Unbelievable.
You don't hear the changes?
He doesn't play good change.
Thanks a lot, Mike.
