Normality is a paved road.
It's comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow.
Vincent Van Gogh.
What is normality?
Well, according to the dictionary, normal is the usual average or typical state or condition.
Common.
Normal is also a decision.
There's a quote by Robin Sharma, and I've looked to this for years, it states,
If you want what the 5% have, you need to be willing to do what only the 5% are willing to do.
What they obtain is not, definitionally speaking, normal.
It's uncommon.
And what they do to arrive at that outcome is also uncommon.
They play by a different set of rules, and in doing so, end up with an entirely different outcome than most.
To put it simply, we arrive at normal when our effort level is normal.
You put in normal hours or give average effort at work.
Most likely your results, career progress, compensation will be normal.
You pay moderate attention to your fitness, your health.
Well, your level of physical fitness will be normal.
You dedicate typical levels of effort to your relationships,
your relationships will be normal.
Not terrible, but not remarkable.
I'm sure you get the idea here, the pattern.
Generally, over time, what we get starts to reflect what we gave.
And here's where the self-assessment comes in, the awareness.
You have to ask yourself in pursuit of something greater
whether your actions are aligning with your goals and objectives.
There's nothing so futile.
is telling yourself you're going to achieve miraculous larger than life outcomes,
and then putting in average typical normal effort.
If normal goes in, normal comes out.
And as I was thinking about this recently, you know, as it pertains to my life,
I had a little epiphany.
So fitness is a big area of focus for me.
I run or do some type of strength training six days a week.
As far as I can tell, that level of effort is beyond normal.
I go above and beyond in that area of my life.
But even though I'm aligned on my mission to be the 5% there,
I realized there was a gap.
I realized my diet was very normal, completely unextorinary.
It's just easy to convince yourself to eat whatever you want
after a really long run, right?
Why not pizza?
After all, it's the normal thing to do.
But I had to remind myself that what I wanted in that area of my life holistically is not normal.
Therefore, the inputs cannot be normal.
It was time to start standing up to those things that are very easy to say yes to, to rationalize.
And that's the idea here.
I pick my 5% categories where I truly want to excel and make sure.
There's nothing normal about their development.
You want top-tier results.
You have to give top-tier effort.
Make the sacrifices, map out the path.
I've come to see this differently over the years.
It's not an indictment against you as a person for choosing normal.
But know that it is indicative of a choice.
And the output eventually comes to align with the
all the actions or lack thereof stack up to resemble something that's up to you to decide what that is
and so the next question perhaps somewhat of an obvious one is when it comes to the things that matter
most to you why stay confined to normal it's the above and beyond the peak experiences the times
we overcame, fought and won, took the risk and came out on top. That's when we are at our best.
That's when we get the most from life. So is normal the end of the world? No. It's just that
abnormal is the beginning of one. Good morning. Welcome to the Your World Within podcast. Today,
we're going to talk about keeping your head in the clouds and your feet on the ground,
simultaneously managing the big picture and the small stuff,
non-stop belief that things will work, that there's an answer,
that you're ultimately going to get there, and that you won't quit until you do,
while also being brutally honest with the facts on the floor.
the reality around you.
A lot of times I think there's a tendency to conflate positivity
with a detachment from reality.
But they're very different things.
You need them both for success to unfold.
You need the big picture,
and you need the minutia, the steps,
the little things that add up over time.
in the book good to great Jim Collins calls this the Stockdale principle
where Admiral Stockdale I think at the time
Commander Stockdale was shot down during Vietnam
he was prisoner of war
for over seven years in Vietnam
and it was just obviously a brutal experience
and you know one of the things
that helped him survive
was being
painfully pragmatic
while also knowing
in his soul, right,
with every ounce of his being
that he would ultimately get out,
that the men he cared about
and helped so much
would ultimately get out.
And so when Jim Collins is interviewing him,
you know, he says,
Admiral Stockdale,
what differentiated the ones that made it
and the ones that didn't?
And the answer is incredibly surprising.
He says optimism because the people that were overly optimistic said,
we'll get out by Christmas.
And Christmas comes and they don't get out.
And then they say, okay, we'll find we'll be out.
We'll see our families by Easter.
And Easter comes and they're still there.
Okay, maybe next Christmas.
Next Christmas comes, nothing changes.
He says, those are the people that died of a broken heart.
There was too big of a gap between the reality,
the components needed to progress.
the way they wanted to progress and the way they were thinking.
You have to be willing to look in the mirror and diagnose a situation.
You know, that's applicable to business.
It's applicable to your personal life.
Dream big, step small.
Believe, but act.
Be cognizant of the world around you, the reality that you're living in.
You can't change something that you don't understand intrinsically.
You can't progress if you haven't analyzed something.
And this is not about your capabilities.
This is never a call to doubt yourself.
It's to be strategic.
This is just saying that you need to understand the reality so that you can improve upon them.
If you want to be the next Michael Jordan, that's a huge ask.
That's a lot.
It's possible you can.
you can do it
and you need to believe with every ounce of you
that if that's what you want to do
it's a pursuit, you know, worth taking.
But you also need to know what it means to be Michael Jordan.
You got to understand the commitment,
how he sacrificed relationships.
He sacrificed, you know, his friends, his love life.
If he got up every single morning, all he did was basketball.
How he took thousands of shots a day.
How his mentality and his aggressive behavior, right, his mindset, the way he looked at life
and approached life on and off the court, it required that he was so intense and so obsessed
with winning that some people couldn't handle it.
It meant that everything stopped except being the best.
That's a big ask.
A lot of people can't do that, don't want to do that.
But that's what it takes.
And to think you're going to be Michael Jordan without understanding, one, the commitment
that's required and how you stack up, it's going to be in vain.
I remember the CEO of the company that I worked for at a college,
used to say, look, you have to be able to be honest and say when your baby's ugly.
Look at what you have and be able to draw a line from where you want to be.
So you can fix it.
So that's the point.
If you can juggle those two things, you'll be unstoppable.
Unstoppable.
If you can be the one to trust yourself enough to know that there is a big picture, you will pursue it, relentable.
endlessly and you will get there.
If you can take that
and you can marry it
to the little things, right,
to the awareness, to promising yourself
that you will continue to analyze,
assess and do what needs to happen
on the ground, that you will be
realistic, you will be pragmatic.
When things fail, you won't sugarcoat it.
You'll dive in.
You'll look at why it failed.
So that you can pick up those pieces
and build something stronger
and continue to build and continue to build, stack, and stand on what you've made.
Those are the people that change the world.
Those are the people that get things done, that get results.
Dream big, step small.
See you tomorrow.
Nothing in life will ever be bigger or smaller than your thoughts about it.
You are your perception of the world as it unfolds before you.
Your mind will either be your single greatest ally or the very reason that you fail.
This is a battle between you and yourself.
And I want to make something clear.
No one, nothing will ever dictate your success.
except you.
Those who judge
or criticize
they're not a reason
to change your approach
or back pedal.
They are a benchmark.
They are a sign
to carry on.
See, you'll never achieve
until you can
depersonalize criticism.
Until you understand
that negativity,
that the opinions of others
are not a reflection of you
or your work.
They are simply
part of a beautiful process. Look, in life there are certain undeniable truths. I can promise you that
tomorrow the sun will rise. I can promise you that two and two will give you four and I can
promise you that anything worthwhile in life will have its doubters, its haters, and its cynics.
You will have people who want to pull you down before you begin the client.
But they are not the problem nor the tragedy.
Their existence is guaranteed.
Oh, they'll be there.
The tragedy is letting them misdirect your journey,
giving them control of a battle that is not theirs to take.
You aren't doing this.
For the ones trying to tear you down or the ones helping to lift you up,
you're doing it because it's right for you,
because deep down in your soul you know there's
There's no other reason.
There's no other option.
You know what your values are, where your heart is?
When they say no, smile.
When they talk, carry on.
If you have not made the world around you uneasy or uncomfortable, if you've generated
no reaction, you have not moved.
So don't run from the dissenting voices.
Let them be.
Their words highlight their own shortcomings.
Not yours.
Sure, it will be difficult.
Yes, it's an adjustment, but at some point you'll see that the climb was dependent on it.
That attempting to satisfy the world around you only leaves you empty,
because at the end of the day,
you can hide from criticism or anticipate it and keep moving right towards your dreams.
Build your castle!
There is no more.
need to keep the doubters or the naysayers out, they are no threat to your empire.
Of course they don't understand your vision. Of course it means nothing to them.
That's how the world works. People need to see results, not ideas. They need to see to believe.
In fact, everything you dream of believe in, it needs to be carved into existence.
And the important thing worth noting here is that it's not personal.
It's not a reflection of you or your talent or your potential.
The differentiator in life will always be one's ability to turn ideas into things.
You have that power within yourself.
Literally to change the world as we know it, that's not a question.
It's not even far-fetched. You're capable.
But we need to spend less time feeling like we're owed something for that exhausted energy.
The world is a tough place.
It rewards value.
And sometimes it takes way longer than we like to see a return on that investment.
As James Clear mentions, you put an ice cube in a room at zero degrees,
and you gradually turn up the temperature.
You won't see it even begin to transform.
to transform until you hit the 32 degree mark.
That's not when the work began.
It's not indicative of everything,
but that's when the effects of the work become visible.
And getting to that point,
it's one of life's greatest challenges.
It's hard to give everything for something you can't collect
when you go to bed at night.
It's hard to be that patient.
The only way to break through the noise
to create something is to fully, wholeheartedly
believe in yourself.
Believe in yourself to the extent that you can detach from the criticism.
Detach from the facade of perfect lives on social media and the expectations you're immersed in.
This isn't a race between you and the world.
It's a battle of will between you and the voice that says there is no 32 degree mark.
Removing that negativity, it's just as important as focus.
on the positive. Dreams live at that intersection of belief and action and I've always wondered
what people think they're gaining by shouting about how important they are, the things they're doing,
or their plans. That does nothing. You need to know what you're doing and that's all. Words mean
nothing, ideas or empty, respect is earned by adding actual value, by making a difference. So reallocate that
energy into the gift you are giving to the people around you.
That is a feat best accomplished with your mouth,
close, and your eyes open.
Every day, every action unnoticed, effort unseen,
it stacks up to create something that will truly change.
You have to see it before they do.
You have to believe it before they will.
They will.
You have to be the architect of your plans and your goals because no one will build them
for you.
And that's just it.
In a world where victimhood is becoming currency and blame is becoming the norm, we have a choice.
Create a temporary fleeting escape or create a life that may be a life that may be a
You know how much easier it is to project out at the world?
To never have to look in the mirror and address the things you could be doing better?
You know how much easier it is to hate him or her or them over there?
To make up stories and scenarios about how much different life would be if it wasn't for A, B, B, and C holding you back?
I mean, short term, it's like winning the lottery, right?
You don't have to take any accountability.
You don't have to have tough conversations with yourself.
You don't have to reflect on the painful memories or decisions.
No, you can put your feet up.
Sit back, point at the world, and say, look what they made me do.
If only.
But here's what's not being said.
every time you point your finger away from your own chest,
every time you project blame, you're letting yourself down.
Why? Because we only grow when we take accountability.
And yeah, accountability can be painful.
Uncomfortable.
But in that discomfort exists the only bridge to a better tomorrow.
That's it.
You go to the gym, you put your muscles through stress.
You break them down so that they can be built back up stronger.
Personal responsibility cannot be the muscle we refuse to build.
There's too much at stake.
It can't be the thing you avoid.
Why?
Because it's what injects meaning into our lives.
I'll never forget in the eighth grade.
And I bet every single person in that class still to this day remembers.
My teacher, Mr. Betancourt, walking up to the front of the classroom,
he had his hands in a bowl shape and was holding it up to the ceiling,
explaining to us that you can't go through life,
asking the world to give you its scraps.
That if you sit and you wait and you hope and you blame, you will lose,
That's the recipe for bitterness and resentment.
Think of it like a fork in the road.
Where our two options are vastly different.
You go left at the fork, and you enter a world of escapism,
refusing to confront your problems,
finding reasons you can't do that which you know you need to do,
hating others, those who have built, grown, or created themselves.
or you go right at the fork.
You learn to do the hard thing, to humble yourself,
to take control of your life and your world.
When things aren't the way you want them to be,
you look around and you immediately ask,
things outside of my control may have brought me here,
but what can I do to fix it?
Those of you have been listening to me for a while,
you probably know my favorite articulation of this idea was explained by Will Smith.
Basically, he said,
look, you can't control where you start and how true that is, right?
Life's not fair.
Some people are born into more resources and opportunity.
Some people find themselves in social situations that aren't ideal,
and that list can go on and on and on, right?
Human beings are all different, so there will always be discrepancy.
But, and this is Will Smith's point, where you go from here will always be your responsibility.
What happens next is all you.
You choose whether to complain, shake your fist at the sky, and blame the world around you,
or pick the pieces up and move forward.
And like I said a minute ago, don't be fooled by the temptation to latch on to that flea.
moment of relief, of running from accountability,
the only way to win in the long run is to face your demons.
It's that whole saying, when you're riding shotgun,
you can dispute the route all you want,
but ultimately it's the driver who's in control.
When will you take the wheel in your own life?
Ensure the stakes become higher.
Right? Now it's on you.
Now you can get lost.
Now you can get lost.
Now you're responsible for the maintenance.
Now if you don't end up at the right place, or I don't know, you're late to a destination,
it's your fault.
But now you can also be the one overseeing the journey.
Now it's yours and that's power.
And as our world becomes more and more one of escapism, it's becoming more prevalent, easier
to avoid or not fix something but tweet about it.
How easy it is to not confront our problems,
but rather open Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and mindlessly scroll.
How easy it is to leave that message on red
and go about our lives,
because that's easier than saying what needs to be said.
Strength is being the one
amidst all this escapism and avoidance
to confront what must be confronted.
Whether it's an interaction with someone else
or that hard conversation with yourself,
a personal change that must take place.
Life is such a gift, it's such an opportunity.
But we have to move through it with our eyes open.
We have to see things that matter
and gravitate towards truths that will shape us.
Like Mr. B said, over 20 years ago now,
we can't ever fall into the mentality
of holding our hands up to the sky
and asking life to give us anything.
We can't only point it ourselves
when things go the way we want them to go.
No, let's be about accountability,
empowerment,
understanding that if I don't like what's around me,
the transformation starts now and it starts with me.
That wasn't perfect, I never will be,
but I can learn, I can evolve,
and most importantly, I have everything I need to make that happen.
It's all awareness.
The victimhood idea is a wolf in sheep's clothing,
and I know that may seem harsh, maybe even lacking empathy.
But dropping that narrative was truly the best thing I've done in my life,
and I know countless others who would say the same.
You can't be both a perpetual victim and be in control.
No, life is tough.
It knocks us down and at times it brings us to our knees, but this is a reminder that you cannot stay there.
It's a reminder that those who contributed to the situation are now minor detail and background noise.
It's a reminder that the path forward is about you.
It's about you pushing all that aside and asking yourself what's required to move in the direction that I most want to go.
Because you are that powerful.
You are strong enough to make that move.
And there will be a point where you look around you and the circumstances of change.
The people are different.
The environment is different.
You're different.
And you'll smile at yourself knowing it's not because of what the world provided.
It's not because of what anyone gave you.
It's not because of what people out there did or didn't do.
No, it's because when you were at your lowest,
when life was presenting curveball after curveball,
when you looked around and maybe even thought to yourself,
there's no way forward here.
You found a way to get up and create something new.
Do you believe that this world is yours,
that space and that time
are trustworthy passengers on your journey.
Do you believe in the unseen
that what we know and what we don't,
what's possible and impossible,
they're not so different.
They just need to be connected.
Do you believe that one person can be the difference?
That courage is a choice
and that if you have something to say,
not saying it is a tragedy.
Do you believe in your resilience?
That when your back is against the wall,
that when all seems lost, when everything is in doubt,
we are presented an opportunity to evolve into something more.
Do you believe that there is a way?
That when the road ends, there is another path,
That when you can't go around, you can go through.
And when you can't go through, you can go over.
Do you believe that the darkness before you is merely the absence of light?
A light waiting to be created, brought to light.
That nothing is meant to be.
Any void can be filled, and you are in fact the architect.
of that light. See what you have before you. It's no easy path. It's not the simple one or perhaps even the one you asked for, but it is in all respects yours. It may seem larger than you. Its uncertainties may make you question your decisions. Its complexity may prompt memories of simpler days, but none of this lasts.
Because over your shoulder, what you've left behind will always tell a different story.
Always remind you that you could have stayed home.
You could have remained and accepted things as they were, dreamt about what might be.
But rather than wait for time to expire and take your power into the ground like most ultimately do,
you took to the sky.
You let the stars, the infinite world, beyond the horizon.
and guide you, and as much as you decided to be here, this path shows you.
It chose you to make something new where there was once nothing.
To exchange breath for the first time with an atmosphere conducive to your greatness.
You did not know it was there the whole time, and how could you have?
It wasn't visible to any naked eye.
It wasn't accessible to the common man, but it's here now because you said yes.
yes. So please hold on to that courage because it's everything. The difference between accepting
the now and rewriting history is belief. Belief in a tomorrow that is different from today and as you
make your way into this darkness, be proud. As you enter that which most wouldn't dare
to confront, hold your head high when you falter, stumble, when the ground,
under you begins to shake. Believe not only in your pursuit but in your resilience,
life remains hold and dark until we find the courage to do something about it.
Until we step out of the shadows. See, you aren't escaping the emptiness you're leaving behind.
No, you are the one who will give that emptiness life, the maker of a new universe.
You are the architect of light.
