Good morning. Welcome to Your World Within Daily. I'm Eddie Pinero, and in this episode, we're going to talk about the fear of success. How to look at the road ahead, not in terms of what can go wrong, but what can go right. So what is the fear of success? I'm going to start this episode off with the question from Daniela, who is, one, a longtime listener of Your World Within on Spotify, YouTube, and now the podcast. But,
she's also taken herself through a transformation, a fitness transformation, incredibly inspiring
every single day, you know, working out and changing her mind, her body and doing an incredible thing.
She says, hey, Eddie, I was listening to Your World Within Daily, and I have a suggestion for a podcast topic.
You have or may not have struggled with this, but currently I am, how do you deal with the fear of success?
every time I take strides in my business, I freak out inside.
Probably fear, doubt.
I had someone contact me to be on their podcast, and I think it's awesome, but I'm currently
screaming inside.
Very interesting question, because you hear people talk about the fear of failure a lot.
You really don't hear it framed as the fear of success.
And it peaked my interest.
I did a little bit of research, just some basic Googling, looked at some psychology blogs,
stuff like that.
And, you know, there is plenty of information differentiating the two, fear of failure versus fear of success.
But there's enough overlap where I almost felt like why make the simple complex.
Like in my mind, it is the same idea of our comfort zone.
You know, like wanting to be in that safe place.
Fear of failure, maybe we look at it as short term.
I don't want to lose.
I don't want to fall in my face.
Whereas, you know, fear of success may be longer term, right?
It's uncharted territory.
It's unknown.
And you know how that sort of, you know, vulnerability that wasn't there.
Right now there's eyeballs on you.
But fear is fear is fear is fear.
You know, at the foundation, it's the same thing.
It's looking at what can go wrong instead of what can go right.
So Daniela gave an example of a new podcast.
podcast she's going to be on. And that's exciting, right? That's an incredible thing. Now,
fear of success to me feels like she's looking at that opportunity and thinking, well, I could say
something dumb. What if it doesn't go right? What if people think I'm a fraud? What if you get the
point, right? There's a laundry list of the things that we tell ourselves in our heads. And what you
forget, right, I've seen Danielle's content. Like I mentioned, I know her. People need
what she has to say. She changes people's lives. She had the courage and the discipline to look at her
life and for whatever reason say, you know what, this is not where I want to be. I want to be somewhere else
and just relentlessly pursues that. People need it. And so looking at the upside is, well, I could
bring this to them. I could give people the very thing they need. I can take another step in my
career. This is going to be a boost for my business. This is what I need. This is incredible. A lot of
don't have this, but I get this. I've worked for this. That's the difference.
You know, and maybe I am guilty of simplifying here. But if you look at every situation as binary
in terms of do I look at what can go wrong in the negative or do I look at what can go right
in the positive, there's so much upside here with very little downside. You know, I've been doing
interviews for a while. I've had some good ones. I've had some bad ones. I appreciate all of them.
Because they're all, you know, part of the process. They're part of growth and necessary.
You know, and I'd like to think in five, ten years, I'll look back at my current state right now,
as I'm sitting here at, you know, 5.30 in the morning, holding a microphone and be like,
dude, that was incredibly mediocre at best, you know. I hope I say that. Because this is a step to
ultimately what I want to be. And that's how you have to look at it, right? Success, whatever it means
to you is uncharted waters. It is definitionally the unknown. It's going somewhere you are not
currently, right? If you're looking at it linearly as a journey, and that means it's scary.
But it also means you have to jump and build the mental muscle, the physical muscle, the wings on the way down, right?
learn to fly on the way down, as they say.
Because you have the potential, you're adding the value, you have everything you need,
now it's reps.
That's all it is.
It's reps.
And vulnerability is, you know, people are going to, you can't please everyone.
That's just life.
And if that's your standard, it's going to be a tough, a tough ride, right?
You can't please everyone.
You have to anticipate that, you know, you're going to get some mud thrown at you.
That's life in the big city.
There's a really good quote that it's attributed to Aristotle.
He's kind of a catch-all for random quotes on the internet, so I'm not sure he actually said it.
But basically, there's only one way to avoid criticism.
Do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing.
That's a pretty powerful comment.
If you're looking at fear of success, if the opposite of being criticized is sitting in a dark,
room, or I guess you can have your lights on in this metaphorical room, sitting in a room,
never saying anything or doing anything of value, having the same routine, doing the same thing
every day, not leaving the confines of where you are now in wondering what I could have been
every single day. Give me the criticism. You know, I'll take the failures, the bruised knees,
the losses in exchange for a life of meaning. Again,
Fear is fear is fear. Whether it's failure or success, are you looking at the downside or the upside?
You think the Wright brothers looked at the downside? Do you think Jordan looked at the downside? You think Einstein looked at the downside?
No. In a world where there's so much to gain, let's focus our precious attention on capturing the good stuff.
