Your World Within Podcast by Eddie Pinero - Blaze A Trail

Episode Date: May 6, 2020

In this episode I delve into the famous Emerson quote: "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." We live in a world perpetually t...rying to dictate who we are, what we should strive for and what happiness means, as though life is an instruction manual to be applied and followed. In reality though, these standards are crafted internally. They are merely projected out. In other words, the world doesn't get to dictate who you are...that's a job for you, and you alone. When we let go of our weaknesses, celebrate our strengths and pick up the pen to author our own stories, it's amazing how quickly the narrative changes.

Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to Your World Within Daily. I'm Eddie Panero. In this episode, we're going to talk about Emerson's belief that to be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. There's nothing more powerful than bringing your own gift to the world. Taking your own skill set, your own strengths, the things that at your core you know set you apart,
Starting point is 00:00:41 and using them as the metaphorical wave to take you through life. So let's simplify this, right? Remember two things. There is nothing more freeing or liberating than being who you are, and your environment is always trying to tell you who that should be. Cultural definitions of success, social media, creating standards that are just unobtainable. self-defeating narratives are everywhere because there are pictures of what greatness is,
Starting point is 00:01:20 what happiness is, what success is, and they don't align with who we are. Freedom comes when you accept yourself. When you don't dwell on your weaknesses, you realize that everyone has weaknesses, and that's fine. Why spend your time building those up? When you can do the alternative, when you can double down on your strengths, your passions. Imagine if Bill Gates double down, triple down on basketball because he looked around and that's what everyone was doing. Or music because he wanted to fit in or be cool.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Or you can fill the blank with anything. The point is he was unique and he owned it. And without that, we wouldn't have what we have. He had a competency. He had a love and he rode that out. And everyone has that in some capacity. And the reason I'm talking about it is because, you know, our tendency always is to look out for answers. It's to see what the world wants us to do.
Starting point is 00:02:29 That stuff comes internally. And then you project it out. You make the world understand. The world doesn't make you understand. It's an incredibly important distinction. I say it all the time, you are the author of your own story. We'll find that narrative and express it. Don't hide it.
Starting point is 00:02:54 See, the world around you is comprised of things made by people who had the courage to build them. Not look around and see what they should be doing or how they fit in or how they conform, but how their unique skill set could contribute to something new. to something that's never been there before, that may be judged or criticized or even condemned, but that by repressing their own unique self, it would deprive the world of that greatness, of that newness, of what it could become,
Starting point is 00:03:35 would make them pawns on someone else's chessboard, or even worse, you could say, a slave, right, to a master that doesn't exist, a manufactured standard that will never be met. That is the plain and simple truth. The things that stand today, the things that matter, they were internal beliefs, right? The culmination of self-belief and trusting one's own instincts,
Starting point is 00:04:06 people who believed in who they were and their message, even if it was different, and then they, they took that power and they used it to redefine reality. Things are not just the way they are because they are the way they are. No, it was folks who rode their strengths, folks who were okay stepping into unknown territory, were okay being different, even in the face of pushback from the present moment.
Starting point is 00:04:35 But it's not the world's fault. They can't see what you can. This is right up Brunee Brown's alley. Right. Vulnerability is everything. When you can take the armor off, accept who you are and have the courage to start building from it. Not only does the whole of humanity benefit, but you become free. Free of doubt, free of insecurity, free of worrying about what other people think, free of this anxiety of having to meet standards that your friend posts on social media or your neighbors post on social media.
Starting point is 00:05:11 or your neighbors post on social media, when you let go of your weaknesses and you celebrate your strengths, your world will change. Right? I opened with an Emerson quote. I'm going to close with one. Same idea.
Starting point is 00:05:25 He says, do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and blaze a trail. Let your intuition guide your steps. Not expectation or obligation. Today, start blazing your own trail. I hope this helps. If you guys enjoyed it, please make sure you subscribe, rate, review. It helps me get this podcast out to the world.
