The will to do anything comes from within yourself.
You define your goals, you map out the journey.
In my mind, comparing yourself to your competitors or anyone else
should never contribute to how you define yourself.
What it should be used as is a tool to drive improvement,
to push yourself to make the most of every little opportunity that comes your way.
I heard a quote from Mark Cuban,
And he said to work like someone is working 24 hours a day to take it all away from you.
And I was giving this some thought.
Obviously, it's a powerful message.
And I started to apply it to my own situation.
And the first thing that came to mind was running.
It's something I do every day.
A lot of the most important decisions I've made and ideas I've come up with have occurred while running.
So I started to think about when I'm at my best, right, when I'm working out and truly pushing myself.
Obviously, I set goals, right?
I look to stretch my limits, my boundaries, and I can do that on my own.
I really don't need anyone or anything.
But when I truly excel is when I feel those footsteps behind me.
When I know that if I don't speed up, someone will run by.
and leave me behind as they go on for a faster time.
And this thought drives me insane.
Look, I know it's just a run around the Charles River.
I'm downtown Boston, I'm not at the Olympics.
I get why it would seem a little crazy.
But to me, it's the same thing as a race,
starting a business, excelling at work.
It's instilling the mentality that I will do whatever it takes to stay ahead,
regardless of how it's perceived.
Just like I do everything in my power
to be that same way in all aspects of life.
There are always footsteps behind me.
That's how I push to stay at the top of my game.
If you're not obsessed with getting better
at doing more than everyone else,
you will be left behind.
The sound of footsteps is a reminder
that you haven't even scratched the surface
of what you can do.
That you can completely transform how you think of winning.
And that's how you will get what you want.
Listen, every morning when you wake up,
you need to know that there are footsteps behind you.
That a million people want what you want.
They're waking up every day intent on doing what you do
and are willing to put in the work.
The best do that and then some.
Right, they step up.
They're willing to go further.
Be crazy.
Put everything out there for their goals.
It doesn't matter how ridiculous it looks.
Success is doing what it takes.
And I know that's vague.
I know there isn't, you know, an answer written out in 10 steps.
But you will find your way.
You will stumble.
You will fall.
But if you truly have that tenacity to outrun, to outwork everyone,
The only thing left to do is win.
Surprise yourself. Surprise everyone around you.
They will be there, I promise.
Only a step behind you.
A miracle isn't that I finished.
The miracle is that I had the courage to start.
John Bingham.
We all share a commonality.
The runner on the starting blocks.
The one at work, the one's
studying, the one trying to create the best life possible for their family, see we are all
at a beginning looking up at an idea.
Nothing given, nothing to adjust or react to no just an idea.
And ideas when we are at the bottom looking up, they're deceptive in nature, their size,
their weight, their breadth.
They like to present themselves as much more.
more than they actually are.
And so, to turn ideas into things one needs see themselves, not as some descendant of Mount
Olympus tasked with lifting that 2,000-ton boulder before them, but as one armed with
an understanding, the awareness that the 2,000-ton boulder before them can be broken down,
by peace that it is nothing more than a facade, and while it may stop most in their tracks,
you are simply not most.
Not because the world treats you differently, but because you see the world differently.
By knowing you are bigger than the sum of its parts, you have defanged this wolf, you have put yourself
in position to do that which makes the world tremble.
which causes even the most confident to doubt,
you have put yourself in position to begin.
See, there is a time to look at the top of the mountain,
breaking through the clouds, powerful and majestic.
And then there is a time to look at your feet.
And right now is the latter.
You're not concerned with the big things.
No, not right now.
Your job is to move forward into this haze.
To not see but adapt, to not know but trust.
Things will materialize, and you know that.
But at the same time, you can't control the future.
Your battle is right now, and it's with the space immediately in front of you.
It's with the thoughts attempting to deceive you.
It's with the things the outside world will tell you,
but forward motion is the antidote to all of that.
and so forward you must go.
The beginning is always the hardest
because our thoughts are a mightier foe than life's obstacles.
Thoughts take on lives of their own.
They become monsters, demons, dead ends, obstacles.
On the other hand, just ask that we adjust.
There is no obstacle that can't be addressed by stepping into it.
And so while the temptation is to sit
thinking, speculating about how challenging the road ahead.
This is where you think less and move more.
Harness the world as it comes,
because the truth is nothing is as big as it appears to be.
Life is incredibly solvable.
Every problem has a solution.
Every bad chapter ends.
Every setback is a chance to be more than you've ever been.
But how would you know that?
If you bow down to the mountains in your head,
how would you know that?
if you never began.
So let today be the dotted line you sign with your future self.
A promise to be aware that the mountaintop peers over you,
but to not be distracted by its shadow.
To take the climb one rock, one step, one second at a time.
Let it be an acknowledgement that nothing light throws at you
can't be broken down and conquered so long as you don't get in your own way.
Gone are the days of being held captive behind steel bars of self-doubt and fear.
That road ahead is not the problem.
It never was.
Refusing to give yourself permission to travel down, it was the problem.
So without constraints, meet life head on.
Let the trials and tribulations emerge because they will, but know that you will rise to meet them.
Let the unknown highlight all that you don't know.
You can't see.
Fine.
The one thing you are sure of is that you will, one by one, transform the unseen into strength.
And when those thoughts emerge, telling you that you've gone too far, that you're in over your head, that this isn't meant for you,
know them not as truth but as the only obstacle that can derail and distract.
You don't have time for make-believe monsters.
No, not today.
So onward you go to map the unknown, to tame the untamed, to live your life
the way it was meant to be lived.
Life is built by quiet believers.
Those who see what is not and transform all that is.
Who poke holes in truth and embrace the absurd.
The ones who dream while awake and cherish every.
See, for the quiet believers, it's not about talking.
There's nothing to really talk about.
Words are just noise.
It's footsteps that inspire.
It is the journey that tells the story.
And what quiet believers understand is the subtle line
that separates truth and perception.
They get that dancing to a beat means sometimes you dance alone.
And as Nietzsche points out, sometimes they're even
thought to be crazy by those who can't hear the music.
In this life, no one comes up, places a hand on your shoulder and pronounces that your future
is great.
No one looks you in the eyes and says they can see the life you'll build, money you'll make
or shape you'll be in.
No, that doesn't happen until the next life.
the one you've yet to create.
So patience.
Patience, quiet believer, the abstract is just as real
as the hand in front of your face,
just with a little more road to travel.
The sun is as real at night as it is when it rises.
Things are simply not always what they see.
The impossible, the unimaginable, their stories,
Stories that need to be transcribed from one's mind to the paper in front of them.
They need a delivery mechanism and quiet believers.
They quietly scream with a megaphone.
So loud, the world can't help but listen,
because ready or not, it will be shaped and reshaped again.
Every moment is a new beginning.
They are the wizards that flew around in a young author's head before she courageously shared the magic.
The feeling of that game-winning shot, making its way through the basket after school in a North Carolina driveway.
An entrepreneur starting a bookstore in his garage, but seeing not books, but accessibility, time, a better way.
See, the truth about life is some crowsy.
created and some merely react to it.
And while you, you hold the pen.
So dream away, quiet believer.
Because you have a world to construct.
Mountains to climb.
Oceans to cross and stories to tell.
Quiet believer, today is yours.
And those changes they'll propel you.
The naysayers will inspire you, the stars they will guide you.
Shining bright is a reminder that you are made of the very elements lighting your path.
You are an architect.
Not talking or explaining or promising, but simply showing, leading, earning respect from yourself,
attention from the masses and a place in history.
Because quiet believer, looking back,
If you found the courage to change even one thing,
every second will have been worth the fight.
What are you willing to endure?
Because to become something more is not to react to the world,
but to create a new one, yours.
As my dad explained to me when I was in grade school,
it's taking initiative, right?
Seeing what isn't there, what's needed,
than making it happen.
And while the setting certainly change,
the situation is no longer about helping around the house
so I could go to the concert with my friends.
Right now, as we get older,
our world seems to get bigger along with us.
The stakes are higher.
Now it's everything I see when I open the blinds
and I look out that window.
It's all there.
And we can have as little or as much of that as we want.
But what we receive will always be directly proportional to what we're willing to endure.
To how long we push forward before results arrive.
How long we can carry on with the sole company of our beliefs.
It's about Bezos packaging and delivering his own books from a garage.
Knowing it's not about today, it's about tomorrow if he can just hang on.
If he can just endure, it's Tony Robbins with $20 in his bank account,
knowing that has no reflection on him or what he's capable of.
If he can just hang on, just keep pushing.
It's not that they had the ability to bring their dreams to life.
A lot of people do.
They had more.
They had patience.
They had the discipline, right?
To remain calm and collected.
That's nerve-wracking.
That can be unsettling.
They had the ability to be focused.
to remove all the noise around them.
The doubt that stops people before that desired payout is achieved.
And one of my favorite ways to look at this concept of growth is a little anecdote about lily pads in a pond.
And basically, it's posed as a question, right?
So the lily pads in this pond double in size every day.
And by day 30, the pond is completely covered in Lillipas.
So then what day is it half covered?
That's the question.
A lot of people instinctually, they say, oh, okay, day 30, half of 30 is 15, so on day 15 it was half covered.
But that's wrong.
They're doubling every day, which means the pond wasn't half covered until day 29.
and only a quarter covered on day 28.
And the reason that's important is because that means on day 1 through 27.
Those lily pads were growing, they were working, they were moving,
yet they occupied less than a quarter of that pond.
All that work for a result that was barely visible.
And then at the very end, the payout becomes exponential,
and that's what success is.
That's what it means to pursue anything of significance.
It's days, months, years of unrecognized work, of marching forward, covering ground when no one knows or cares or believes except you.
That visualization is your sweet spot, but like we all know, easier said than done, right?
This is an incredibly challenging thing because we get impatient and our pride starts to hurt.
We become tempted to jump to something different or easier.
We don't hang on long enough to hit day 28 or 29 or 30.
When things really start to evolve.
It's like James Clears metaphor in atomic habits, right?
Where you have an ice cube sitting in a room and it's freezing and you start slowly shifting the temperature up.
You don't see anything going on with the ice cube.
Not until you hit that 32 degree mark.
But there are things happening when it goes from 26 to 27 degrees and 27 to 28 and 28 to 29.
Those little molecules are moving and bouncing around.
But then boom, suddenly it hits that mark and it changes rapidly right in front of you.
That's why this single shift in perspective changes everything.
It's not about right now.
You're doing this for the exponential growth to come.
You're believing.
You're laying the groundwork.
until what I call the overnight success period,
when the world finally recognizes and goes,
who is this?
Wow, that was quick.
They have no idea about day one through 27.
They don't know about the effort and the mental gymnastics.
They don't know how many times you had to talk yourself out of quitting
or out of rationalizing a day off.
They just don't know the road you took to get there, and that's fine.
In fact, that's the beauty of it all.
You not only saw it first, but you brought
something beautiful to life, by enduring turmoil, by navigating discomfort and chaos, you
have become the maker of a new universe, your universe.
Because you stood there because when others would have ran, turned back, you endured.
What can you be the best in the world at?
Life is a complex place.
Complexity sometimes means confusion.
It means we forget the big picture.
What's our purpose?
What are we chasing?
What are we bringing to the world?
What can you be the best in the world at?
It's a little question I try and ask myself every day
because I know if I stay close to it,
my decision will have far greater impact.
there will be more meaning in life.
See, it pushes away the things that are appealing in the short term,
but really don't take us anywhere in the long term.
Because one of the coolest aspects of human nature
is our ability to illuminate what matters and, well, mitigate what doesn't.
Helps us focus on what's important.
We need to go to the grocery store while we step out the front door,
paying attention to nothing but the task at hand,
not the objects to our left or right.
We don't know what colors the cars are where that passed us,
by or the plants we walk by. We don't think about the blood pumping through our bodies,
making it all possible as we walk to the car. We don't even see the car as its metallic components,
as it really is. We see it as our portal to a place that has the food. See, we are blind,
but at the same time have this beautiful gift of vision. We see the path right to what's most important.
So let's leverage that. And what I think we need to remember is to identify in our own lives
What that means with regard to our purpose and the context of what we are becoming.
See, every day I hear people talk about followers on social media, right?
How do I get attention?
How do we get noticed?
How do I market myself from my brand to the world?
How do I stand out?
And every time I hear that I always have this little internal reaction like a voice saying that's just so wrong.
It's so backwards.
You stand out by adding value to the world.
By being good at what you do.
It's that simple.
And so look at it like this.
We'll take a specific example.
To worry about the marketing and the attention and the followers first.
It's like worrying about the transportation of something you don't have yet,
or that's incomplete.
It's like spending all your time worrying about the logistics of a cargo van
and having no idea what that van is going to transport.
Isn't the product the most important thing?
And that's the question I ask myself when I'm caught up in something flashy
or maybe out of line with my big picture.
to make sure I'm on track in this crazy world.
If social media disappeared tomorrow,
are you good enough at what you do,
that you could take that product or service or skill set
to another platform and start again?
And if you're not, fine.
But are you working towards it.
Those are the parameters that we should all live between.
Everything else tends to work itself out.
Steve Martin's quoted as saying,
Be so good they can't ignore you.
And that's what I find so exciting,
the opportunity, the chance,
to build something sustainable.
That's why this is a long-term play.
And in a world where so much emphasis is put on perception,
what's the reality?
What's the story?
The pictures are great on the surface,
but what's the value that resides below that underneath?
What are you working tirelessly day and night to be exceptional at?
What are you leading to build yourself up as a force to be reckoned with?
As a powerful, valuable individual.
See, my world, a lot of what I do is immersed in social media, which is why it's so important
that I remember the perspective that I step out.
Social media is not the product.
I'm thinking much bigger than that, and I hope you are too, whether it's academics or sports
or art.
What is your thing?
What's going to be your arena?
Where are you unstoppable?
Where you add so much value that the world has to stop.
We're sure you can capture it on social media, but you can talk about it face to face with
clients and family and friends and strangers on the sidewalk you can write about it
teach about it where it's so much a part of you that the phrase competent doesn't even do it justice
that's where greatness lives not in screaming for attention or creating a facade those things don't
stand the test of time i'm talking about being truly remarkable and we all have that ability
We're all capable of mastery in some area moving towards something that matters.
We just have to make the choice to own it, to see the world and all its opportunity for what it is, to begin.
And what better a time than now.
Every run tells the tale.
All those streets, sidewalks, and paths,
paint a picture. Each footstep enshrines forever a moment in time that comes
together to comprise the now. For my time in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, it was asking,
why not? Why not find out if I could be a little faster than yesterday? My first dance
with the clock.
Waking up early, running up Snake Pond Road,
sun shining in my face,
inhaling that crisp morning air.
It was running along the canal
where the distance was precisely mapped out in paint
on the ground below,
tattooing a path that seemed to go for as long as I wanted to push forward.
It taught me
that we could do amazing things when we decided to.
That we have more in us than we could ever imagine.
In a sense, Cape Cod was my eyes opening up to the idea that
what life gives us is directly correlated to what we ask of ourselves.
So ask for a lot.
In Boston, it was exploration.
It was pushing myself harder and forced.
further, but also stretching my worldview wider, a time for transformation.
It was beginning to see the mundane, the commonplace for the wolves in sheep's clothing that
they are.
I began exploring city street, like I simultaneously began exploring life's possibility.
I saw how taking new routes often came with two distinct components.
One, an unsettling nervous feeling in my stomach, and two, an eventual gratitude for finding
the courage to go there.
The world will never tell you to go where you have not yet gone.
It will never assign you a map and hand you keys, a plane, or a bus ticket.
That desire must be cultivated internally.
Boston was me realizing the unknown wasn't a border keeping me in.
It was a hand extended.
In Roanoke, Virginia, it was, in a sense, a rebirth.
Moving away, post-college.
Everything was new, was foreign, but everything was exciting.
I had to learn who I was in new surroundings with new people.
My Nike running shoes took me through woods,
downside streets, into the heart of downtown.
I ran, and I ran, and I ran, because with all that change,
it was one of the few constants in my life.
It brought me to the realization that with so many moving pieces,
so many things shuffling in and out,
there are parts of me that are non-negotiable,
that in life it's okay and even necessary to change,
but one should never lose themselves in that process.
They call Rowanoke the Star City of the South,
for the giant glowing star
that lights up on the mountain overlooking the city.
Perhaps a reminder
to never lose that north star in our own lives.
In South Florida, it was about connecting the dots.
That had been relentlessly doing,
now it was seeing.
Seeing myself as that person.
As someone ready for more,
worthy of a spot at the table capable of creating monumental change.
Those soft sand runs reinforce the notion that I get stronger when the world moves under my feet.
Those hundreds of thousands of footsteps under the hot sun reiterated
that I'm willing to do what is often deemed unnecessary or even over the top.
And lastly, living in the luxury of no winter,
reminded me to appreciate the sun, the perks, the advantages, and the victories we collect along the way.
But to never take them for granted, to be ready.
Because life's winters don't always wait until after fall to show up at your doorstep.
See, every step we take is a lesson.
Every street, sidewalk, and path is part of a story.
And sometimes we don't understand.
until we look back at the chapters.
We don't get it until we have the luxury of hindsight.
I didn't know that I looked back on Snake Pond Road as sacred ground,
as a launch pad to everything that would come next.
No, in the moment, it was nothing more than a temporary escape
from a world that felt bigger than me.
I didn't know I'd see the city of Boston
is the place that taught me to question the normal
of everyday life.
To show me that one could be moving awfully fast
and still going nowhere at all.
No, in the moment, it was merely a decision
to dip my toe in the water
to entertain the curiosity and sense of adventure
that always seemed a few feet ahead.
I had no idea Roanoke, Virginia,
would be where I learned that,
as Emerson said, to be yourself in a world,
constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment,
that there are non-negotiables,
and shining down above all the noise and intricacies of everyday life
exists the path and the resources to become who you were meant to be.
No, in the moment I was simply stepping off my branch and landing somewhere new.
I didn't know South Florida,
I would be my consistent reminder to level up, to hold tightly that intersection of love and value,
to find gratitude for what I have and maintain faith in bringing about what has not yet materialized.
No, at the time, I was taking my life, my business, and my running shoes to warmer weather.
You may not see it now.
But your path, the one that led you to today, is the right path.
You are exactly where you need to be for the beginning of your next adventure.
But here's the thing.
You.
You must keep lacing up your shoes.
Keep getting up in the morning and chasing those sunrises.
Keep dreaming, growing.
Keep your eyes, ears, and heart open.
Because the world has so much to give you.
But you have to allow your feet to carry you there.
You have to give yourself permission to take it all in.
The normalcy of right now, down the road will end up being anything but normal.
These steps are the steps that make you who you are, so own them.
Believe in them and most importantly, keep taking them.
What's one thing I wish I knew when I was younger that I think people could benefit for?
from today. What single piece of information could have the biggest impact? I spent some time
thinking about this question and the more I think about it, the more the answer becomes incredibly
apparent. It's that you are in control of your own life, your own destiny, your own future.
And when you take accountability for yourself, life changes. Period. And if you thought that was
obvious, I would advocate taking a look around. Maybe a stroll through social media, the
Twitters and Instagrams, and TikToks of today. And no, that's not the real world, but it's
certainly a microcosm of the real world. What do you see? Well, you see chronic blame?
I don't like where I'm at or things are, so that must be your fault or their fault or someone
else's fault. You see people looking everywhere but in the mirror, actually seeking out,
victimhood because that's what brings the attention that's today's currency it's
much easier to be the victim than the hero because being the hero means you
have to sacrifice something it's people saying the news or some institution or
the federal government is the problem and if those things would only change then
we'd be good let me explain why I think this mentality is self-sabotage and why
why I would take younger me by the hand and I would say listen to what I'm about to tell you.
Where you start is often outside of our control.
Let's be real, life is not fair.
We don't all get dealt the same hand.
But this next part is I once heard Will Smith articulate beautifully is the same for everyone.
What you decide to do about it right now is what matters.
And that is the control that we all have.
It's not your fault where you start, but it's your responsibility to choose where you end up.
You can shake your fist at the sky or you can start building a life that matters to you.
It's easy to blame the world, to be the victim, at least in the short time.
term. But a fulfilling life is about meaning, about fighting for something valuable, about evolving
into the version of yourself that you always knew in your heart you could be, you just had to
unlock. See, no one down the road was ever happy with themselves for blaming the world while they
bitterly remained stagnant. I would say to a younger me, worry less about how you're perceived
and think more about who you are,
what you're capable of,
because that you can always control.
Stop losing yourself in the news
or whatever the narrative of the day is.
That has nothing to do with your progression,
has nothing to do with your very next step.
So sure, be informed, but do more, consume less.
Because by and large, it's a distraction.
And I would say the government,
which has become the crux of our discourse today,
transforming into a modern-day religion,
look, the government's job is not to give you anything.
It's there to protect what's inherent to you already.
Your right to live life on your terms.
See, satisfaction, it will come from good habits.
It will come from self-belief.
It will come from taking risks and failing and learning.
It will come from the courage to step out into a world
that's completely unknown.
It will never come from a self-interested politician or body in Washington, red or blue.
So stop whining about political optics and focus on where your two feet are taking you right now.
Because I promise in the grand scheme of things, that's what matters.
That is your strength.
Expecting someone else to come along and change your life is like screaming into an abyss.
I would say to my younger self,
when you start looking around and seeing what everyone else has
and beating yourself up for not being as good or feeling like you're behind,
look, it's great that their success motivates you,
but dwelling on it won't make your life better.
Life is a race between you and you.
It's a fight between yourself and those thoughts that constantly knock on the door,
looking to settle into your psyche.
If you defeat that demon, you'll be where you want to be.
Regardless of where others are, you're right where you need to be, so keep your head up and keep moving forward.
I'd explain that to become something more, to change, requires a sacrifice that feels so substantial, so big at first, that it bullies most people into staying right where they are.
That to become something new, you have to learn to play the fool, to get humbled.
You have to change your relationship with short-term failure.
And that's not easy.
But taking control of your life is not supposed to be easy.
Only worth it.
They're different.
And I can certainly look back at my own life.
Think about the times where I was so busy pointing out that I didn't even think to point the finger.
at myself. I was so worried about life being unfair that I existed in this temporary state of
paralysis. The whole time not knowing that I could have been stepping forward. Could have been
tapping into the single greatest power I possess control over my own life. See, every time
you feel anger or the need to blame those around you, you're taking the spotlight off of what
matters and placing it on things detrimental to where you want to be to your journey and your future.
Even the most unjust, arbitrary things, let's say you didn't get that promotion you were beyond
qualified for, where you were mistreated by someone or things didn't go the way you wanted them to.
You can fill in that blank, but refusing to blame others and immediately taking responsibility.
Again, even in a situation like that, it gives you one of the greatest,
advantages in life. It gives you that gift of control. You can now assess the situation.
You can now ask yourself, hey, what can I do to change this? You can delve into the why,
find the lessons and the value. You can come back and re-approach this thing stronger.
Because to blame others, to take on that role of victim, it's essentially living life in the
passenger seat it might be easier might be less work less responsibility but what
you never have is control over where that car goes but when you own it when you
say hey maybe it's not my fault but look it's mine now it's my responsibility the
good the bad every aspect of my life it puts you in position to change things
to take the wheel and reroute to a destination of your choosing so that would be
my message to the world. I know it's not an easy road. I know life is unfair. I know things
aren't perfect, but the best thing you can ever do for yourself is say, you know what?
This is mine to own. And I'm going to look around for that light switch that will create
momentum. That little decision that will get the ball rolling, I'm not going to sit back,
