The moral is to the physical as three is to one.
A quote attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte regarding his troop's morale in battle.
Victory starts and ends with mindset.
So, the myth or story goes, Napoleon had a coin.
And he was known prior to embarking upon particular battles to flip this coin.
He would say, if it lands on heads, my friends, it's not our day.
We weren't meant to fight.
We'll stay here and fight some other day.
However, if it lands on tails, the gods are on our side.
We're meant to charge into battle and collect our victory, for it is destined.
And every time this coin landed on tails, the army would proceed into battle, they would
march into the onslaught of oncoming bullets, of weapons and fire raining down on them.
and they would collect their victory.
In his time past, Napoleon died.
This coin was eventually found.
And upon examination, something interesting was uncovered.
The coin was tails on both sides.
This coin had nothing to do with the gods.
It was about preparing his men for victory in their minds
before ever stepping onto a battlefield.
It was about believing in an outcome.
before pursuing its realization.
This is life.
To believe something's possible is perhaps the greatest weapon one can have in their arsenal.
When you believe something is possible, the question goes from can I to how will I?
The gap is bridged. The terrain is crossed because time is not exhausted on the likelihood of
the outcome, but on its materialization.
I heard someone say years ago that some of the most incredible things in history were
accomplished by people too ignorant of the odds to be held back by them.
Dreams are self-fulfilling prophecies.
They require one be crazy enough to willingly navigate the enemy's fire.
To step into hostile territory, put a stake in the ground and live as though you were meant
to be there.
To operate knowing the unknown is where answers live and excuses die.
It's believing that the world doesn't dictate your fate.
It just adds variables to the story.
It puts building blocks at your feet, places a paintbrush in your face.
in your hand. You are the only one who chooses whether to stop or go to quit or continue.
Life can place obstacles before you, but only you decide whether to bow down to them,
navigate around them, or march directly through them.
We win behind our eyes before we go into the world and collect our medals.
The moral is to the physical as three is to one.
So close your eyes, win your victories, then go out into the world and collect them.
A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.
That's from George Patton, General in the United States.
States Army integral to the Allies victory in World War II.
So why?
What makes this statement so powerful?
Well, it rings true because we have to move beyond the idea that we can manufacture greatness
with one swing of the bat, one stroke of the pen, that if we wait for the right moment, perfection
will come.
The light will turn green.
The stars will align and the path will emerge.
I feel like I could scream this from every mountain top and it wouldn't be enough.
Life is not a perfection game.
Life is an adjustment game.
And I'll speak anecdotally here.
In my experience, looking over my shoulder, reflecting those times that I'd clung to perfection,
rationalizing my immobility by saying, hey, you're not ready, this isn't good enough.
I'd only have to dig a few layers down to see that my not moving wasn't out of some loyalty to excellence.
No, I was standing still because of fear, a fear of going, of starting, a fear of the unknown.
Perfection is the biggest con there is.
It's a scam.
It says, wait here, your perfect moment will arrive.
Hang tight, the right time is coming.
No, there are no perfect beginnings.
There's merely the courage to move into something new
or the regret that will ultimately come from wishing that you did.
And sure, a part of it's almost counterintuitive.
It's like, why isn't it beneficial to wait?
Why would you want to take the leap before you're ready?
Here's how I see it.
One of the most important distinctions to understand
is that between the thinker and the doer.
The thinker who ponderes, who reflects, who studies and studies and studies, thinking he or she can create for him or herself a perfect jump-off point, thinking they can obtain for themselves all the necessary information, all the answers before they begin the journey.
The truth is greatness is forged through repetition via wheels on the road, and yes, you are terrible at first.
completely unsure at first, you get lost at first.
But this becomes the knowledge that shapes the journey.
When you go before you're ready,
two important things happen.
First, after falling down and feeling embarrassed and insecure,
you get back up, you look around and you go,
wow, okay, I'm still here.
That sucked.
That sucked, sure, but it wasn't as bad as my brain told me it would be.
Next, you learn from the exchange.
You can start doubling down on what works and eliminating what doesn't.
And eventually, as you take this confidence and wisdom onto the next step, repeatedly,
the curve becomes exponential.
In doing, you begin stacking bricks, creating a foundation.
Those experiences that humbled you become what you want.
what you lean on. They're what turn into the experience, the knowledge, the credibility.
And see, thinking you can skip all that ugly stuff by waiting on the ledge for perfection
to arrive in your hands, that will be your undoing. That's just as crazy as a sailboat
waiting for the wind to stop. It's like, no, you need that friction, that resistance to reach
your destination. And no, we cannot control everything. Yes, there are power.
hours beyond us. But if you go now, you learn to use and navigate them. The greatest gift
we can give ourselves is permission to go. It's looking a year ahead and dreaming of the moment.
We pause and say, wow, what a year. The twists and turns, the lessons, the highs, the lows,
the peak moments, all brought me here. And how different here is from back there. How far
I've come. Knowing, by the way, that life was never asking me for perfection, but rather a
willingness to start, to dive in, to adapt along the way. I know a lot of people with businesses
that exist in their minds, but not in reality. A lot of people in shape when they close their eyes,
but not when they look in the mirror. A lot of people living their best lives when talking about the
future, but not when they pull up to work on a Monday morning.
We shorten the gap between our ideal existence and the present moment by going, by stepping now.
Even when we can't imagine how the process will unfold.
Because let me tell you, life will bend and twist in ways you can't even fathom.
It'll take you places that ignite your soul.
Show you things you never dreamt of seeing.
But you have to put yourself in position to receive that from life.
The world wants to help people who help themselves.
So give yourself the gift of progress.
Of momentum, if a dream is only worth the action one is willing to take to bring it to life,
let that action start now.
move beyond the illusion of perfection and towards the opportunity to take the imperfect
every single day and transform it into greatness.
Every time your mind says you're not ready, let that be your invitation to step forward.
See, life may not be a race, but that doesn't mean time will politely wait for you.
We must say goodbye to perfection as we evolve, as we evolve, as we
grow. I can guarantee you it won't be missed. If someone were to tell you life is easy, they'd be
incorrect. If they were to tell you there's a specified path to contentment, they'd be
misinformed. If they were to tell you there's a book of answers to every question you'll
come across, they'd be misled. The point is not that
Life is easy, predictable, or defined.
The point is that despite the fact that it's none of those things, you're capable of making
something from it.
That from a seemingly endless barrage of unknowns exists the pieces to build something
truly extraordinary.
I came across a quote a few years ago from Abraham Maslow and a concept that
was in Ernest Becker's book, The Denial of Death.
And the idea is we are simultaneously gods and worms.
Every once in a while, you come across an idea that changes the way you see things.
That's definitely one of them, right?
A duality that is perpetually under tension.
Gods and worms.
We're animals.
We're flesh and bone eroding by the day.
We're given a temporary stay on a giant rock rotating around the sun,
while simultaneously equipped with the power to not only be aware of that finitude,
but to transcend it, to dream, to see things that are not yet there.
Our minds are miraculous.
We are both gods and worms.
So what do we do about this?
How about use the fact that we're going to die?
The fact that in many ways we don't have control.
The fact that life is messy and unpredictable and often a maze of complete chaos.
To rather than shrink because of it, take off the guardrails and reach for the heavens.
To put things into existence that do not yet exist.
Why not go all in?
After all, the thing about living as the saying goes, is that no one makes it out alive.
No one hops on the roller coaster to constantly look at the watch to dwell on its temporary nature.
No, it's to enjoy the ride.
And what is our time here?
But a few short rides around the sun.
So when it feels like life is too big, when the day overwhelms or disintegrates into chaos,
don't fixate on the rocky nature of the world around you, but on your ability to take it all and make it mean something.
Cherish the idea that although everything around you is dictated by natural laws and constraints,
your mind is bound by nothing.
And where you seek answers, you will find them,
where you pursue more, you will unlock it.
Our finitude, our challenges are essential to our existence.
They remind us that we have nothing to lose,
that the song will end, so why not dance?
Like it's your last time.
Because sure, in time we've, we've,
will be dirt for worms.
But that's exactly why, as long as we're here, will live to, in our own unique way, bridge the gap
between the ground we walk on and the heavens above.

One of my favorite anecdotes or mantras is work hard in silence, let success be your noise.
That idea in my mind is perfection.
Let your growth, your evolution, and yes, ultimately your accolades do this speaking for you.
This always hit home for me for two reasons. One, because things of value come with a hefty price tag. We know this.
excellence requires sacrifice. It is in many ways both a daunting and worthwhile pursuit.
And two, well, because we often conflate flailing around with progress.
In fact, some of my favorite books, whether it be Deep Work by Cal Newport, Relentless by Tim Grover,
The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday, part of what captivates me with these is the emphasis on what we are
willing to do in silence behind the scenes. That's where true meaning and value
materializes. It's also where it's most difficult to commit and continue
forward because in silence there is no audience clapping for you. There is no
validation. When you're building and reading and improving, when you're at the
gym or on those calls, establishing that foundation, putting in the hours, it's easy to look
around and have doubts.
And our brains go, I did the work, where's the reward?
I sacrificed, so where's the payout?
It's not intuitive to understand that, hey, it's not visible yet.
One of my favorite metaphors, the lily pad pond, in which there is a pond with lily pads, doubling
in size every day and on day 30 the pond is completely covered with them. So what day was the
pond half covered? And if we're thinking quickly we might be inclined to say well half of 30 is 15,
so it was half covered on day 15. But that's wrong because if they're doubling every day,
that pond wasn't half covered until day 29 and only a quarter covered on day 28.
Meaning every day before then the change was so small that perhaps it wasn't even visible to the naked eye.
So small that to onlookers, the prospect of it one day being covered might have seemed far-fetched.
But what was at work was the necessary change to set the stage?
To start what would ultimately become the exponential growth that is noticeable, impactful.
Now, of course, lilypads are not human, but little thought experiment.
Let's say they had been.
I'd like to believe that talking about their growth, their plans, right, them screaming about
how great they are and what they will someday be would not have helped them grow faster.
In fact, it might have potentially even distracted the necessary evolution.
The growth was not them versus the world, it was them versus them.
And that's the idea, right?
it's okay to work on you, to make a deal, sign a contract with yourself that you are doing
something now that only you understand.
That won't be visible until a later date.
Let success be your noise.
Because there's often zero correlation between the loudest person and the one making the greatest impact.
Let success be your noise because you can't fake competency.
Let success be your noise because leaders don't need to proclaim they lead and winners don't need to prove they've won and
Virtuous people don't advertise their virtue. It's in the doing
That's where we pay the price the steep price
I've always said the last 10 years for me the hardest part wasn't failing
It was not when things didn't go as planned the hardest part was simply not knowing it was the worst part was simply not knowing it was the whistle
that, hey, all this could be for naught,
that I'm wasting my time,
that the whole idea is a car without wheels,
and that's what hurt.
But if I could go back in time,
talk to my younger self, I would say,
you know, all this, all of it,
the ups, downs, highs, lows,
it's making you who you need to be.
And if something doesn't work or go as you planned it originally,
relax, you learn, you adjust, and you move forward.
That's how the doubling of lily pads, right, using the same metaphor, occurs.
You're learning, you're growing, and that's a you thing.
I talked a few weeks ago now about the difference between a fee and a fine,
as discussed in the psychology of money by Morgan Howes.
The weight of not knowing it isn't a fine, it's not a penalty, it's the fee,
it's the cost to get into the show, the ticket to something great,
But you have to walk through that door.
Again, it's a decision, it's personal, it's a commitment.
It's nothing that screaming and seeking attention brings.
You have to trust yourself, believe in yourself, right?
Your effort is doubling in size.
It's compounding exponentially, and you don't need to convince others.
You need to say consistent and build yourself up until the world has to notice.
trust the mission you're on.
As long as you're, one, moving forward,
and two, learning and adjusting,
you are destined for something greater.
By committing, you have stacked the deck.
By believing in yourself, you have rigged the game.
It's about hearing and believing that voice that says,
there's more in store for those who take it.
And you are capable of that.
That's the decision that will ultimately ring so loud it will echo through time.
I was listening to Alan Watts the other day and he was referencing a Zen parable and he asked this question I thought was pretty cool.
He goes, when a flag is flapping in the wind, what's moving?
The flag or the wind?
The answer, neither. It's the mind that moves.
It's how our minds interpret our experiences that create our realities.
And the reason this reminder is so important to me, the reason I don't believe we could ever
hear it enough is because keeping that understanding front and center in our lives tells
us how powerful we are.
Sure, we often can't control the situation, we all know that.
But we can always control what the situation means.
Every event is open to interpretation.
And that's what's so incredible.
You know, yeah, sometimes it takes a while to get to the value,
especially when our minds want to default to the negative
or what's missing or what's lost.
But if you're willing to look
underneath every occurrence is exactly what you need.
And so take, for example, something we can all relate to,
losing something that truly mattered, that we really matter,
truly mattered that we found meaningful, whether it was a person, a job, an activity, a physical
impairment, right?
When asked, what does this change mean?
The mind goes loss.
It defaults to I had it, I loved it, and now it's gone.
But underneath that, there's a chance to take the pieces of what remains and go down
a new path.
to find something just as or even more beautiful.
The same loss can mark the beginning of an adventure.
Is it ideal at first?
No, but it's usually not the ideal that prompts our most important change.
It's life's turbulence that pushes us to seek out something new.
I love taking this little trip down memory lane, right?
Because it's the business ventures that fell apart that caused me to look in the mirror
choose to be more. It's the projects that just didn't end up being that good, right, that
allowed me to see this journey as a creative one. Or hey, some projects hit, some don't,
but it's not personal, it's a ride, and what an opportunity. And it's the break-ups I went
through. And while sure, if you were definitely brutal, they gifted me with an opportunity
to personally level up, to dial in my understanding of what really matters to me.
I can think of physical setbacks, monetary obstacles, all these things that hurt in the moment.
Now, I'm not sure I could have controlled the initial emotive response, right, the human reaction.
But learning to ask, well, how can I get better from this?
That's a different question.
How can one month from now be amazing because of this situation, regardless of how it feels
in the moment?
It's not the flag or the wind that moves, it's my mind.
So how will I choose to paint the landscape around me?
How will I choose to give meaning to the things that will ultimately comprise my reality?
That's power.
Now I've always felt it easy to conflate like finding my world.
value in our lives with being happy all the time.
But again, we're emotional creatures and life can be challenging for all of us.
I don't think it's possible to be happy all the time.
That's not the goal.
The true victory is in finding gratitude along the way, in pausing and asking, how can I
take this seemingly unfavorable result and find a way to win from it?
Because guess what?
The sad truth is most people don't do that.
Most people walk right by that stuff.
Most people chalk up the L's as L's and leave the good stuff behind.
If you know there's a win in everything, and you ask that your mind look for it, the reality
you create will be one much different than someone undergoing the exact same circumstances
with their eyes closed.
Remember, it's the mind that moves.
It's you who writes the script, who controls
the narrative and that's not a burden, that's a gift. It's what makes you more powerful
than you could ever imagine. You can only exist within the walls you've placed around yourself.
So question, where have you placed them?
Think of the concept you can only hit targets that you aim for and expand it out.
Because my point here is you can only exist in the plane that you have deemed to be real for you,
that you have decided is reality.
And if we think about that just on a common sense basis, it's pretty apparent, right?
People don't do things that stretch beyond their perceived identity.
If I don't think I'm capable of accumulating wealth, for example,
I'm simply not going to do the things or take the necessary steps required.
to accumulate wealth.
Why would I?
If I don't think I can help or add value to others,
I'm not going to do things in an attempt to help or add value to others.
Using that example, that stuff would exist on the other side of those walls I've placed around myself.
That's why deciding what those targets are is so important.
Deciding what's real matters.
Because if you set the scope too small,
If your reality is void of all possibility and imagination, even if you win, you've conceded too much.
The premise you've been basing your entire existence and your decisions on is so limited that
you can win there and still lose overall, still leave everything on the table.
And there's a ton of examples of this.
You know, I commonly hear people refer to it with their work.
I'm not crazy about what I'm doing, but how do I fix it?
How do I learn to like this job?
How do I exceed expectations in my role?
How do I get a promotion so that I can bring in more income?
All valid questions, certainly valuable questions, if it's where you should be.
And I can tell you, I remember asking those same questions to myself.
the conclusion I finally came to was, no, what you need exists on the other side of those walls.
In this part of your life, it's critical that you move beyond those parameters.
That's not what lights a fire in everyone, but it's what lit a fire in me.
I was asking the wrong questions, right? It was go over there,
and start your own business, start your own journey, start sharing the things you want to share.
So what Alex Hermosso refers to is playing a different game altogether.
And it's kind of a weird concept to grasp, you know, that you can win the game you're playing
and still end up losing, you know, because you never thought to look for more.
You never ventured to peer out over what was directly in front of you.
This is a matter of self-reflection at its finest.
Because you'd never see those walls unless you really took the time to think about it,
to be alone with yourself and ask those questions.
It's the fun what ifs.
What if I stopped doing those things I don't like and started doing what I love?
What if I didn't accept this as what I have to do?
And instead took a different path altogether.
What if I was capable of playing a different game?
And what we find is that we're capable of.
of some pretty incredible transformations.
We're capable of taking what matters
out of a less than an ideal environment
and recreating it somewhere that is ideal,
that is conducive to our success
in our growth and our evolution and our contentment.
Instead of conceding so much
and asking so few questions,
why accept those limitations?
So again, I ask,
Where have you built your walls and why?
And what if you push them back?
Like lines in the sand meant to be redrawn?
See, perhaps the income coming in is a direct result of you feeling like,
hey, that's just what I make.
Perhaps your fitness level is a result of you thinking,
that's just how I am.
Perhaps your friends and the people you surround yourself with
the result of you saying, it's just who I know.
But there comes a point when new targets must be set and new lines drawn.
At least if any type of evolution is going to.
You don't have to perpetually navigate the revenue streams, fitness levels, and friend groups you have now.
You can play a different game.
Again, it's not always asking, how do I live within these walls?
exist within these circumstances.
Sometimes the question is,
how do I step into a new arena entirely?
