Your World Within Podcast by Eddie Pinero - Detail is the Enemy
Episode Date: May 27, 2020"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" In this episode, I make the argument that unwarranted detail and granularity are the greatest enemies to growth. We don't begin the journey because we don't... have all the answers. We don't begin the youtube channel because we don't have all the right equipment. We stay in bad relationships because we can't fathom the logistics of what could come next. These are all examples of details becoming larger than the objective. The truth is, is you want something, simplify and move toward that thing. The detail will ultimately work itself out. This process is all part of mastery. Details are accumulated and mastered over a lifetime, not before you take your first step.

Welcome to Your World Within Daily. I'm Eddie Panero.
In this episode, we're going to talk about detail being the enemy.
Nuance, getting in the way of the simplicity required to get things done and live your best life.
So the other day, I was working on kind of like a little movie trailer, but for a book.
So if you can picture a movie trailer, same concept, but for a new release.
and I was walking down the hallway to go start writing it,
and business partner of mine said,
hey, you forgot the book, you'll probably want this,
if you're going to go write a 90-second speech about it.
And I've read the book, and my response was, you know,
detail is the enemy here.
Basically, meaning in a 90-second window,
you want simplicity, right?
You want to make your point.
You want to elicit something.
emotion and that's it, right? You want someone to understand a simple message and feel something.
And my thought moved to, there's something more here, right? There is this idea about detail
that just like in this situation could derail the entire point of the activity, of the action,
human beings are emotional. Complexity is often the reason we stay stagnant.
right if we can't feel excited and get behind something we don't do it and the granularity of things
stops us a lot of the time so my thought was if we could take something from this message this
situation and apply it to other things it might connect some dots right and so here's another
example i remember when i first started video stuff and we're talking i don't know five six
years ago now um first time i was doing it seriously i had a
camera but it wasn't the camera traditional YouTubers used. So I thought, all right, I'll save up and I'll
get that. And ultimately, I got that camera and I realized my lighting was off. It didn't look like how
other people's, like the best YouTubers look when their videos are lit. So I thought, you know,
I need to get a new light. And I got a new light. And then I thought, well, my editing is subpar,
right? It's average at best. I need to start studying.
to see how people edit.
And so I watched YouTube videos for a week, maybe two weeks.
And I think you understand where I'm going, right?
All of this detail that really isn't important, or it's not as important,
as turning the camera on, whatever the camera is,
whether it's a phone or a DSLR, I mean, it doesn't matter,
and telling a story, relaying a message.
you can get through to someone without perfect lighting.
And so much of the time,
it's the minutia that we put in front of the actual goal.
Because what I've learned over time is
if you have an idea,
if you have a passion, you have a goal,
you have an objective, and you jump in,
you simplify what you want and you move towards it,
the detail is something that ultimately works,
It works itself out.
That is, it's literally the trajectory of mastery.
To master something is to understand the detail and the nuance little by little by little.
Get a better handle on what you're doing.
There are things, there are details to Tiger Woods game now that when he first started golfing,
he had no idea about, nor were they relevant probably.
But imagine him stopping the pursuit
or not moving on or not doing what he needed to do
because he didn't understand that minutia.
It would be counterproductive.
And so this, again, all stem from that idea of the video
of me recording that speech,
making a little movie trailer and thinking
there are some beautiful details in this book.
There are lists, there are examples,
there are all these wonderful things,
but they're not necessary
and actually counterproductive.
What is the one thing?
What matters?
And say that
and say it as beautifully as you can.
Elicit as much emotion as you can.
Get people to feel what you want them to feel
and that's it.
And that single concept carries into so many things we do.
Let the detail fall into place
because it will.
All you have to do is not stop in the detail eventually shows itself.
Your goal is to simplify.
It's to simplify.
It's to understand in the simplest of terms and move towards that thing that means the most.
That will always be the most important step.
