Starting point is 00:00:00 So I want to revisit one of my favorite quotes. Mark Twain, if you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect. This idea resurfaced in my mind last Saturday night. Just because of what was going on during the day, I didn't really have a ton of time to get to the gym, so I ended up going pretty late. And there was not a soul around in the gym.
Starting point is 00:00:28 Completely empty, completely empty. completely quiet going from, you know, machine to machine without any people or having to wait or anything like that. And I just got this moment of clarity, this sort of ever-relevant reminder that there is a ton of value to be extracted from the abnormal decisions that we make. Now, I'm not saying there's anything heroic about going to the gym on a Saturday night, Working out is working out. You get it in, that's wonderful.
Starting point is 00:01:02 I'm not even saying there's anything wrong with working out on quote unquote normal hours or during normal hours. What I'm saying is being exceptional necessarily means you are doing that which is not ordinary. And that situation highlighted, you know, or I will say reminded me that there's an entire world slightly beyond the scope of normality.
Starting point is 00:01:29 and that world accumulates to provide treasures beyond comprehension. I love that message. It's changed my life over the years, and every time I come face to face with it, I feel reinvigorated. It's like an opportunity to re-audit where I'm focused and how I'm spending my time. I'll never forget that interview with Kobe Bryant,
Starting point is 00:01:51 where he's talking about his morning routine, right? And he says, you know, he practices no matter what two hours every morning he's there before everybody else. Whether that's shooting or drills or working out, I'm not sure exactly what he does, but he's there and no one else is. And he says, you know, a week, that's not much. A month, that's not much.
Starting point is 00:02:15 But months turn into a year, which turns into multiple years, which turns into a decade. And that much time, that much extra effort compounds into an advantage that just no one else can reach. At some point, Kobe is too far along because of his additional concentrated effort. He can't be touched. And in my life, I've found my greatest return on investment by highlighting the things that matter most
Starting point is 00:02:42 and consistently delving into them in a way that most wouldn't. No miracles. Just an acknowledgement that right beyond where most people stop, there's value. Not even far beyond, just right there. You know, in my world, it was showing up every week to create a YouTube video, even when the response for years had been underwhelming. Would most people do that? I don't know. I was practicing writing speeches and speaking them out loud in my studio to an audience of zero.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Would most people do that? It was acclimating myself to risk, in my ego to bruises along the way. Would most people do that? And see, the great news is there's nothing special about any of that. Those are simply the metaphorical gyms I chose to walk into. The daily shootarounds that ended up ultimately changing my life. And so now, because you know I have to ask, what are yours? What can become your empty gym?
Starting point is 00:03:49 What can be the thing that's a little out there, a little different? The opportunity left on the table waiting for you to reach out and take it, control it, make it your own. Remember, just because the crowd goes one way, doesn't make that particular decision wrong, but it does make that particular decision ordinary. In ordinary, my friend, is not why you're here. There's a quote from Henry David Thoreau that I've learned to love over the years. He says, we are constantly invited to be who we are. Meaning essentially there is always a hand, you know, reaching out to invite us to leave the confinement that we've allowed to become our lives, the pressure of the outside world,
Starting point is 00:04:57 and attack a world that means the most to us, not obligatory, but for the opportunity. because it's there, it's perpetually available, and that's what Henry David Thoreau means. And what's interesting is the second we lose sight of this, our lives become consumed with things that really have no relevance to our goals or our objectives. In fact, the daily routine becomes the goal. It's the box that needs to be checked to feel accomplished.
Starting point is 00:05:28 We do things because, well, isn't that what you're supposed to do? adhere to rules and processes and guidelines, almost like we forget why that routine matters. Like we forget the car has to go somewhere of relevance. You don't just get in and drive it to drive it. That doesn't make sense. And a friend of mine recently showed me this book of insights from different photographers.
Starting point is 00:05:49 It's called The Photographers Playbook and it's life lessons that helped each one of them along the way. And one that stood out to me specifically was Andrea Parleto. And she talked about a concept called called hibernation or cutting off, temporarily leaving your day to day or your craft, so that all the have-toes and the should-bees can dissipate. And you can ask yourself the question that we so quickly lose, the question that should be the target, that should be the foundation we build upon.
Starting point is 00:06:21 Who do you want to be? Because when all is said and done and you're looking back, that's what will matter. That's what will dictate your happiness. Not that you were five for five on your checklist every day on your 20s, 30s, 40s, and on, right? No, what does it look like when you heal that back? What does it look like under the surface? What makes you, you? And sometimes we have to step back, go away, leave the day-to-day world we've created to see life from a different angle.
Starting point is 00:06:57 Eliminate the steps, the requirements, the technicalities. And what are you left with? When you put your head on the pillow at night, what makes you smile? Bronie Ware states in her book, regrets of the dying that not living a life true to oneself was one of the greatest regrets people experienced. Isn't it worthy of your time, your attention?
Starting point is 00:07:21 Don't you owe it to yourself to make sure that your vision is defined and your action support that? See, anyone can move just to more. move and anyone can breathe just to breathe. With the ones who make the most of each step, each breath, they put themselves in position to live life differently. To accept the invitation to be who they truly are.
Starting point is 00:07:46 To take their inspiration, their gifts and their dreams, and never look back. Stand up. Regained composure and open your eyes. open your eyes because there is everything to be gained. This is a fight, a fight against the tyranny of the subconscious, against enslavement by the mind, which mandates that you take the path of least resistance.
Starting point is 00:09:01 How long does one need to be cornered, stagnant, or overpowered before they fight for what belongs to them? them before they take what is truly theirs. Imaginary limits make believe inadequacy will soon be a thing of the past, soundly defeated. This is not a negotiation. This is war. As fear takes the form of bullets, pain transforms into fire and your world becomes chaos. Remember that what lies ahead is much more valuable than what is left behind.
Starting point is 00:09:54 When you are tempted to fall back and fade away, look up at what can be. And take what's yours. Storm the hill. Keep your eyes fixated on the prize. Sacrifice is an understatement. Indestructible confidence is a necessity. The enemy is not behind you. It's in front of you. It's fighting for the status quo and its fight is in vain. You are armed
Starting point is 00:10:25 armed with a desire for more to be better to not just exist, but to make the world wonder how you did it. Yes, this is war. Winner take all. Stay still or move forward. Settle or chase down what you really want. Yesterday doesn't matter. Last month doesn't matter. Right now matters. So imagine you're sitting down, having something to eat, thinking, relaxing, reading, whatever you're doing. Someone walks up to the table across from you, pulls out the chair, sits down, kind of leans back, puts one leg over the other. Casually tells you, you know, you probably don't have what it takes to do anything significant in your life.
Starting point is 00:11:20 What would you say? It would be outrageous, right? That's a ridiculous scenario. Well, let's say that the next day you get up and you go to walk, run, work out, and he shows up again. Start running next to you, casually reminding you that the odds of you changing, doing anything for the better or slim to none, that this is kind of a waste of time for you. You brush it off, you go to work and guess who?
Starting point is 00:11:47 He passes by your desk, leaves a little note saying, you know, that your bosses, your higher-ups, They're cut from a different cloth. They just see things in a way you can't. You'd probably tell that person to take a long walk off a short pier, right? Or at the very least, you'd understand how absolutely insane the situation is. People can't just walk up and talk to you like that. But now imagine that same person as you, living rent-free in your head. And here's the catch.
Starting point is 00:12:16 You invited him in. you allowed the negativity and the doubt to live there. See, every time I think about that self-talk, I can't help but wonder in a world of obstacles to navigate and challenges to tackle, why is it acceptable for your biggest obstacle to be you? Why should you allow or be okay with that? And I'm not saying everything's perfect all the time,
Starting point is 00:12:44 every thought's pure bliss, but I am posing this question. If you don't believe in yourself, how do you expect anyone else to? If you're not your biggest ally, if you don't respect the person staring back at you in the mirror, how do you expect the world to? Why is our inclination to tense up and refute the negativity from others, but sit back and accept the same nonsense in our own head? If those words don't support what you're trying to build,
Starting point is 00:13:16 I don't care who they're from, where they come from, why they're there, they don't deserve your time. And it's a simple awareness that they are not truth, but merely your fears and your insecurities trying to stop you from becoming who you might be. My biggest leaps in life, they didn't come from physical milestones or benchmarks. They came from mental shifts, convincing myself, believing myself, trusting in myself. When the road is untravelled, when the story is untold, the positive and the negative are both make-believe. They are both fairy tales, their options, their theories, and guess what? You get to choose which option, which one will be yours.
Starting point is 00:14:02 My favorite quote is, you are always stronger than you think you are. Not so much because it reiterates how high the bar is, but because it reminds me how low we often set it for our show. when we're not paying attention. How loud that negative voice can be. You know, when I was unemployed, I was writing, I was running out of money, my life changed because I stopped seeing myself as some lost jobless mess and I started seeing myself as one of the greats with a hell of a road to travel. See, people always follow through on who they believe themselves to be. I refuse to hear that you might fail and the not good enough and I buckled up for the road ahead and when you believe, you can change and know that the road to your goals will be rocky, you will be uncomfortable but worth it. You are taking that hostile voice and making him or her a spectator not a decider of fate and yeah you will lose you can't win all the time and you will feel stuck but life's not always smooth sailing and sure you'll
Starting point is 00:15:05 be mad at yourself but not every decision is a home run but these situations are the byproduct of a journey and here is my point Self-belief is being able to differentiate your situation and pointless negative talk about the situation. It's about remembering that you are the gatekeeper of your own mind. When you believe in you, it places your faith, your strength, and your determination in the driver's seat. It makes everything else trivial, meaningless. It makes it an option that you are simply not going to choose. Sometimes we need to understand the complexity,
Starting point is 00:16:14 the gravity of the situation that we are in. We need to know the reason. We need to capture the whys and why not. But sometimes it's simpler than that. Sometimes it's just about giving. Sometimes it's so incredibly simple that nothing else is necessary. See, here's the deal.
Starting point is 00:16:51 There is more in you to give. And every once in a while, you have a decision to make. Not because you owe it to anyone or because you're supposed to. But because your mind wonders what it would be like to look back on this moment and ask yourself, what? So you stretch. You give more.
Starting point is 00:17:22 And maybe it's one extra set of push-ups. Maybe it's one more mile. Maybe it's one phone call, one more hour in the studio. It is the little advantage. The one that you didn't have to do, and why would you? You could have easily walked out and left it on the floor just like everyone else does. But what if? What if you dipped your toe in the crazy?
Starting point is 00:17:53 What if you left the rationality behind you with yesterday's standards? After all, greatness requires a little insanity, actions out of the norm, the yes, when most would say no. Why? Because it hurts. More hurts. Being proud hurts Greatness hurts Oh, but the top
Starting point is 00:18:25 And see, this is the part Where you think about one thing Digging deeper Finding more The part of you waiting to be uncaged It never reveals itself It must be found discovered It must be brought to life
Starting point is 00:18:45 See, that pain That you're feeling in the moment it goes away. The body, it recovers. They're not in this equation. It's just you and the victory that will live with you for the rest of your life. The conquering of this moment. Again, our world, it is simple. There is more on the table. Will you take it? Will you build something now? That will stay with you forever. It's a time heals nothing unless you move along with it. And I thought, well, that makes perfect sense. You can't pursue a new reality, a new world, unless you can detach and depart from the current one. But that's in theory.
Starting point is 00:20:09 And my question was, is it the destination or the path that holds us back? Because in my experience, the greatest struggle in life, It isn't what to do, it's knowing how to do it. How do we get there? We know we need to get back up. But how? How do we initiate a spark and create momentum and take that world of black and white and add color?
Starting point is 00:20:41 Because those times of gray, when life seems to lose its purpose, we find ourselves simply existing and not living, that's when we need answers. And I guess this quote, it jumped out at me because it prompted an equally important question, which is, now what? And I started thinking a few years back, 2017,
Starting point is 00:21:08 probably the most difficult year of my life. It was void of, you know, any of that beautiful nuance, the uplifting moments that we like to remember when we look back. For me, it was, you know, essentially an ended relationship, was relocating away from family and friends, was having a few dollars in my bank account, everything I own in a trailer, and starting over. And what I'll never forget about that experience, you know, in totality,
Starting point is 00:21:39 was that I saw it colorless, bland, dark. Essentially, the road ahead had lost that goal. slimmer that it once had. See, I used to get so much joy in telling stories. But life had kicked me around so hard that I, at least for the moment, forgot the point. Like, what was my reason? And I knew, like I said, what I had to do, but I couldn't wrap my arms around the how. How do you get the train moving again?
Starting point is 00:22:12 And then I got this email, right? I'm going to paint a picture for you. New apartment, trash, there's stuff everywhere, suitcases. just open. I hadn't shaved in two weeks. I'm exhausted, couldn't sleep, sitting there, frustrated with my laptop. And the email is basically someone looking to create a documentary asking if they could stay with me for three days and create a film about always maintaining discipline and living a productive life. And I just erupted into laughter, right? I don't think Seinfeld could have written something more ironic. It was just, it made no sense. But it caused it. It caused it. It. It caused
Starting point is 00:22:49 me to reflect, right? I'd obviously decline the video. It just wouldn't have felt right or accurate in that moment. But I started to think, how is there such a gap between the old me and who I was sitting on that bed? Is this the new me? And if it's not, why have I allowed this imposter to stay so long? I've always said a life change is one decision away. A light switch away. Just reach out and find it. And when you're going through times like this, it's funny. Life has a way of doing its best to conceal the beauty. It's like it becomes this black
Starting point is 00:23:27 in white painting and it stays that way. It stays that way until you put color into it. One brushstroke at a time. Because life is intimidating when you see everything you're not. When the blank canvas feels like emptiness and not opportunity. But life doesn't require of you the whole picture. Masterpieces, they aren't made overnight.
Starting point is 00:23:52 They're not instantaneous. They are a product of trust, of faith. Not in the canvas or the brush, but in the artist. Through his eyes, he's capable of transforming his experience into art, his misfortune into meaning. Victor Frankl uses the metaphor of a movie. Each day being its own scene, where often they don't even come together until the very last act.
Starting point is 00:24:26 Trust that. Believe that. But man, start painting. In the very next morning, like everyone before it, I woke up to a yellow beam of light, making its way through a crack in the blinds, painting the wall of an otherwise dimly lit room. But this time I saw it. This time I didn't close the blinds, I opened my eyes and sometimes that alone is the little hinge that swings a big door, a door that I walked through.
Starting point is 00:25:02 And I saw the green of the palm trees, the beauty, the simplicity, and thought, how lucky am I to be where I am when I am? I saw a blue sky, a miracle in its own right that's not confined to story or narrative, Well, maybe I'm not either. The white of the sidewalk leading me to wherever I choose to go next. The red of my running shoes hitting the pavement, the gold of the sun bouncing off the buildings, the black of a cup of warm coffee as I soak in the day,
Starting point is 00:25:38 and the teal chandelier that hangs over the horizon as the same sun that started it all retreats after a hard day's work. You have everything you need and life is not always perfect, but it is always what you make it. How things are is not how they should be your need to be, but how you've allowed them to be. And most importantly, black and white does not describe reality so much as it describes what's not there, what's missing from reality. and my hope is to never conform to that sketch or outline that masquerades as truth, but to see beyond it, to find the strength, the courage, the self-belief to pick up the brush and live life in color.
Starting point is 00:26:55 At the beginning, there was nothing. I'd just wait in line and bide my time. move as the world moves so you can think you're free and not know you're confined old stories and narratives made just for me and honestly I'd never dare to live
Starting point is 00:27:19 by new rules why what would I do there be nothing worse than those very plans falling through just imagine being the only one who happens to head for a horizon And when the wheels fall off the wagon, not on my watch.
Starting point is 00:27:38 I'll watch the road, seatbelt fast, and nothing but time ticks away. See, everything else it'll stay the same. Okay, but then days, they turn to years, and I found myself in a maze that I made out of my fears, and regret seems to hang over my head like chandeliers, and nothing's wrong on paper, but paper planes need wings to reach new frontiers and new dreams. They need new things and some things they need to be made out of nothings and those same things
Starting point is 00:28:11 that you never dreamt about changing. They toppled down around you and my God it's amazing and those stars. Yeah, they start for the first time to shine through when you take those some things and you place them behind you one toe at a time. Yeah, that's fine. This will feel new but slowly is better than that. never and life reminds you that you're going to be something that I can tell you right now and the best news you don't even need it all figured out nothing's forever yeah some things they cause doubt but when you trust your reflection you don't need a crowd and you don't
Starting point is 00:28:57 need the trophies or applause from the cheap seats you don't need an army to a the real feats and you don't need answers. You need not be certain. Just know nothing happens on this side of the curtain. Until now, it's been the tail of the elephant in the chair, and you've been held down by the pain and those chains that aren't there, but it's okay now. You can get up and walk away now.
Starting point is 00:29:26 Because in honesty, you really had nothing to compare, but now, don't you see, living is just, Living is just being free of the nothings that felt like something momentarily. It's just a sheep in wolf's clothing. It's a bite with no teeth, so don't run. Pet its head instead, that little thing. So sweet. Like life isn't set in stone.
Starting point is 00:29:49 It's something that you see. It's where the heart and head converge. It's where the sun and sky they meet. It's where time is en masse and where the old you retreats. It's where nothing becomes a stair-gird. case under your feet and when the day comes that you step back and look around and you know something isn't right you know there's just more to be found it's when your eyes see the wrong things in your ears the wrong sounds it's when you believe those little nothings to pretend to run this
Starting point is 00:30:20 town remember nothing is forever and forever nothing lasts so keep that in mind every time something emerges and attacks today is yours and yours alone grab the key and get the map to the moon. With the nothings that you choose, let's make something that lasts.
