Your World Within Podcast by Eddie Pinero - Follow Ideas, Not People

Episode Date: July 2, 2020

In this episode I explain that following people, all of which are imperfect, brings a danger of walking down a path that was given, not chosen. Following ideas on the other hand, requires one to be in... tune with their own values/beliefs and live a life true to that criteria.

Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to Your World Within Daily. I'm Eddie Pinero. And in this episode, we're going to talk about a subtle yet incredibly important distinction. Not being led by people, but by ideas. So what do I mean by that? Not being led by people, but ideas. Well, what I mean is people, every single one of us, right, pushing 8 billion, on this planet are flawed. And we are self-interested and we are human. We are not perfect and we never will be. And I think there's a tendency in a lot of areas of life, right, particularly the political realm, but, you know, entertainers that we idolize or we look up to. Maybe it's, you know, teachers, family members, just people in our lives that we follow blindly. We believe what they believe. And there's a significant distinction between following a person and following ideas. Following a person means that you stand for what they stand for.
Starting point is 00:01:30 It means you're more likely, you're more inclined to rationalize their mistakes. It means you shape your world and your reality based on theirs. Following ideas means you need to be in touch with yourself. It means you need to look in the mirror and know what you stand for, what matters to you, what you value. And then you place people around you or you allow people into your lives that share those common values. And when they don't, you move on, right?
Starting point is 00:02:08 But you're not offering yourself up to someone. else's rubric for life. In the denial of death, Ernest Becker talks about, you know, because of the chaos that exists in humans, right, are struggle juggling the, just the infinite potential of our minds and then the very earthly dying bodies that it lives in, right? We have a hard time juggling that dynamic. And so we're trying to make sense. And so we're trying to make sense of life. And what he calls transference is putting God-like features into human beings. And there's comfort knowing that if we place someone higher than us, there's this little world that makes sense. There's a right and a wrong. And finally, a rubric for us to live by
Starting point is 00:03:03 that's clear. But the issue, again, is that all humans make mistakes. We're all self-interested. It's a bad path to go down, right? And so that's my point for today. Men and women make mistakes. Men and women aren't perfect. So let's not pretend they are.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Let's be more in tune with what we believe in. Let's be more in tune with what matters to us. Because I'll tell you what, it's the first thing that goes out the window is our own belief system. We don't stop and say what matters to me. We stop and say, okay, that's what I'm supposed to think. Better do that. But there's too much opportunity, and I speak to that all the time. There's so much out there for the people that know what they are.
Starting point is 00:04:03 want for the people that take time to examine what matters and pursue it and no one can tell you that follow ideas not people ideas will bring you what matters people people will tell you what matters all right have an amazing day guys if you enjoy this podcast please subscribe rate review helps me get it out to the world and i appreciate that so thank you and uh I'll catch you tomorrow.
