Starting point is 00:00:52 What's the difference between simple and easy? Well, simple is straightforward, uncomplicated. Easy, on the other hand, means achieved without great effort. The difference between those two words is subtle, but essential to understand. One deals with the complexity of an outcome. The other, your will and determination to achieve that outcome. Becoming who you most want to be is simple. But becoming who you most want to be is not easy.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Just like walking is simple, yet hiking up a mountain is not easy. The procedure didn't change the context did. So let's talk about context. Let's talk about this cyclical nature of growth because it's not that most people can't. It's that most people won't. It's not that most people don't get how. It's that they don't have a strong enough why. The path is laid out before you, you just have to be willing to walk down it.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Will you? Step one, realize there's more out there. It's not that what you're doing now isn't amazing. It's just that yesterday's act of courage is now today's status quo. What was the spectacular is now the mundane. What was once the ceiling? you had to jump to touch is now the floor you walk on, so at the very least, it prompts you to ask, well, what's next? Simple. Not easy. Step two, the acquisition of courage. Yesterday's courage was a fight.
Starting point is 00:03:09 It took a lot out of you, and it's ultimately what got you here. But it dropped you at the curb, it waved goodbye and went on its merry way, and here you are. You can stay here. You can stay here. You can stay, here, a lot of people do. You can reminisce of the glory days, the old path, yesterday's triumphs, or you can do that perpetually uncomfortable exercise of vulnerability. Stepping into tomorrow's unknown, reminding yourself that life's greatest rewards have a hefty price tag and that price is discomfort. But I've already played this game, one might think. No, what you did was learn the rules. Now it's time to apply them to a new setting and around goes the merry go round. It might seem like a replication from the horizontal, but here's the secret. You can't see the vertical.
Starting point is 00:04:05 You have yet to look down and see your ascent, see what you're becoming. Just by staying on, holding tight, just by believing in yourself enough to begin again, you are fanning those tiny flames of courage in your soul that wait to be spread like a wildfire. Simple, but not easy. Step three, mistakes. Now, of course, it's not the mistakes themselves, you fear. It's what you think those mistakes will mean. Ridicule, embarrassment, lack of direction, or identity, losing what you have, but here's the catch. When you realize the upside is greater than the downside, you liberate yourself.
Starting point is 00:04:59 When you realize there's more to gain than to lose, your potential for greatness is born. How does one act on this? Mistakes, by making mistakes, by injecting yourself into the turbulence of progress. Our biology has not yet learned that the uncomfortable thing is the right thing, and that's why you get resistance. That's why it hurts.
Starting point is 00:05:27 And it's why few people will accomplish what you will. When it comes to your climb, every day is opposite day. When they run out, you're running in. When they play safe, you play for the victory. To become who you might be, you must learn how to get there. Mistakes are your curriculum. Simple, but not easy. Step four, trust yourself.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Okay, sure, no problem, easy. Yeah, it's easy when you're getting what you want. But evolution takes time, and there's nothing quite like giving and giving and giving and not getting. There's nothing quite like stepping up to the plate again and again and again and bringing no runners home. So how does one find the strength to continue walking up to the batters box? Well, growth is exponential, and those swings and misses matter. The infield singles matter. Everything matters, because it's all chiseled.
Starting point is 00:06:37 your future self out of stone. Nothing is dependent on the next at bat, as much as all at bats in the aggregate. That's why success is so often considered to be sheer will, dependent not on the home run, but on the discipline, the self-belief, to keep walking up to the plate. Repetition and adjustment. Repetition and adjustment. Repeat and refine, repeat, refine, those are the materials from which all things are made. Simple. But not easy. And then we have the finale. The ending, step five.
Starting point is 00:07:16 Celebrate and adjust. At some point you'll be able to look over your shoulder and notice something that perhaps you hadn't before. Space. Space between where you are and where you started. It's not sudden, but gradual. And undoubtedly, with enough persistence, it will emerge. These moments, they are precious.
Starting point is 00:07:37 They are times to it. acknowledge what you've accomplished, the sacrifices you have made. They are life's way of reminding you what you are building and who you are becoming. It's a time of celebration. Every little win means something, every small victory matters, so relish in it, and then transform it. Normalize it. Recognize that that mountaintop is your foundation now.
Starting point is 00:08:08 Your starting point has changed and so have you, which means so have your expectations. With an increase in ability comes an upgrade to what's possible, what's expected. And look at that. We have arrived at a new step one. Realize there is more. This is the process for capturing that which life has to offer. If you can fall in love with that, appreciate it, respect it. While simultaneously understanding it's not scary, it's dependent entirely on your ability to push forward.
Starting point is 00:08:46 If you can understand that, there is nothing you can't do. Nowhere you can't go. Simple, yes, easy, no. But you're not in this for easy. You're in it for the journey, the growth, the adventure. You're in it because it's not easy. You'll see in time, as will the world. that this decision to endure was simply the best one you ever made.
Starting point is 00:09:28 Strong enough is all life asks of us. Strong enough to carry on. Strong enough to take an uncertain step forward. Strong enough to be better than we were yesterday. Everything starts with strong enough. The decision to make a single move towards an existence. that is not yet yours, not yet. But it's arguable that understanding it could be yours
Starting point is 00:10:04 is a greater accomplishment than making it so. As the old Latin proverb states, once you've started, you're halfway there. Halfway, not because you found a shortcut or some previously undisclosed path, but because convincing yourself that you have everything you need is the greatest barrier to entry. It's the wall around the castle.
Starting point is 00:10:30 And once you scale that, well, everything else works itself out with time. But life asks that we be strong enough to start the clocks. It asks that we have the strength to begin. See, because just as things start with strong enough, well, they could just as easily find their end, there as well. How many journeys weren't started because we forgot that our responsibility wasn't to suddenly arrive at the destination, but rather find the courage to take a small step in that direction.
Starting point is 00:11:10 How much of ourselves do we leave on the shelf? Because we forgot that transformation overnight wasn't the goal, but rather a trust in the process. The heart to paint a first stroke, make a first call, walk out the door, strong enough can be an ending or a beginning. It's a fire that can enhance, it can nourish, or it can burn out. And that is perhaps the greatest question of our lives. When the time approaches, when life demands more of us, will we only see the finish line, the mountain tops, the vastness of the terrain? Will we feel so? Will we feel so? small and inadequate.
Starting point is 00:11:56 Or will we remember that we are strong enough to advance, to push back against the chaos of life? And that's not only all that's required of us, but it's the key to everything worth doing. The start of transformation, the seeds of beauty, the foundation of impact. That is our challenge, where some bowed down to the impossible.
Starting point is 00:12:23 You have to see it for what it is, the many possibilities that comprise it, the hope. The understanding that an improved existence is about having the strength, not to change reality in one foul swoop, but to carry on. To take another step and see that as time unfolds, those steps become the blueprint to a better tomorrow. Those steps, that courage, that strength, is everything you'll ever need. Hope.
Starting point is 00:13:23 That bridge that connects the present to a more ideal world. The idea that no obstacle is too big to overcome, no situation too dire, to emerge victorious, and that you are never confined to how things are. FDR has said, we have always held to hope. belief, the conviction that there is a better life, a better world beyond the horizon. Why does this matter? Well, to put it simply, before one can leave this situation they are in, they have to believe
Starting point is 00:14:07 there is another path worth taking. It's not always seeing, but trusting. It's a tale of two components. One, the belief that something better is out there. and two, the belief that you are strong enough to bridge that gap to create that world. So let's start with number one. There was a study done by Kurt Richter in the 1950s, and he used rats. And it was kind of a gruesome experiment, but definitely worth talking about because the takeaway is incredible.
Starting point is 00:14:49 Right? And I kind of cherry-picked the relevant parts of the experiment. Basically, he wanted to delve into the role. that hope plays in our lives. And what he would do is he would drop rats into a jar of water and observe. See how long they would swim before they drown. And for the most part, these rats would swim for a minute or two and then ultimately give up.
Starting point is 00:15:12 There was this innate feeling of hopelessness. But then he made a change, and when they were close to drowning, he'd reach in, he'd pick them up, he'd hold them for a little while. And then he'd place them back in the water. The results between the two groups were night and day. The rats saw in the second group that it wasn't over. And when they were placed back in the water, they had a reason to continue swimming, and they did.
Starting point is 00:15:38 Some of them did for hours. The only difference being that they had hope. They saw there was more. And I don't think that's too different from us. The situation may be different, but the rules generally apply. Right? So much of conceding or giving up in life, accepting an existence that falls short of our ideals, it's when we don't believe in something more. We stop swimming. You don't give ourselves a chance.
Starting point is 00:16:10 Right? So instead of creating bridges to walk on, we make walls that lock us in. Hope is knowing all pain, all discomfort is temporary. And the second component is belief in yourself, belief in yourself to traverse that space between current and the ideal. It's self-empowerment. You can be the difference maker in your life and others. And it's funny, the other day after reading about the Richter experiment, I was sitting at a friend's house with my laptop, kind of trying to figure out what to make of it, because the idea of hope I knew was powerful.
Starting point is 00:16:51 And I wanted to share that story. I wanted to write something that would highlight its value, but it seemed kind of or simply part of an explanation. I'm sitting there thinking about it. And I hear this loud bang over and over again. And I get up and I run to the back of the house, right, to make sure everything's fine, see what's going on. And my friend's standing there with goggles on, this grin on his face and a sledgehammer and a huge hole in the wall in front of him.
Starting point is 00:17:21 And I'm like, dude, what are you doing? You just knocked your wall down. He goes, yeah, I wanted to make another closet. His family's growing. He needs more space, and he just took it upon himself to make that happen. I just looked at him and walked back out. Start walking in the living room, and it hit me. This is a component of hope.
Starting point is 00:17:41 Seeing what's not there and doing something about it. If the swimming experiment is step one, this has to be step two. In real time. Step one, believing, seeing something more. Step two, taking action to change it now, buying into the fact that you have the power to change your own world. And it's funny because any house or room I've ever lived in, my thoughts always, you know, you look around and this is it, right? This is the situation. This is what's being given to me.
Starting point is 00:18:11 How do I make the most of it? How do I play within these parameters? Not, okay, this is fine, but it could be better, you know, by smashing down the wall in the back over there, creating something new. And, you know, obviously the message here isn't about home maintenance. This is about taking a sledgehammer to the places in your life in which you are not content so that you can build in its place something that matters. You look around to your left, you're right, and you're unhappy. That's not the end of the story.
Starting point is 00:18:45 That's the beginning of the story. That's where the wheels hit the road. In other words, it's looking at life. With the lens, with the freedom of knowing things don't have to be what they are. They don't have to stay the same until the universe changes them. No, they can be what you make. And what life teaches us again and again is that walls can be stepped over. Knows can become yeses.
Starting point is 00:19:18 Impossibles can become commonplace. But first, there must be... Hope. There must be an understanding that your world is a 10,000 foot view of all the little stories you tell yourself and the narratives you believe. See, every day when you wake up and take your first steps, breathe your first breaths, know that nothing simply is. No, it is simply chosen and can be remade. That's what makes life such a beautiful thing. It's flexibility. It's It's promise to provide what has been relentlessly sought out. So remember, it's when you can't find your answer.
Starting point is 00:20:07 When the odds look grim, when the rest of the world tells you know that you most need hope. Hope, the power, the strength to look within yourself and remember that one life can change and two, you can change it. Armed with this understanding, nothing is impossible. When others fail to see the answer, the light in themselves, in the situation, you become the reminder that light is internally manufactured. We aren't given answers so that we may believe them.
Starting point is 00:20:45 We are given the opportunity to believe and thus we create that ending we hope to pursue. And without this, life is nothing more than a permanent status. It's holding our hands to the sky and receiving what light chooses to provide. But that's not why you're here. It's not why you woke up today, not to accept, but to create. To find hope in the tragedy and the hardship and to find within yourself the strength to move forward with whatever you decide comes next. In the midst of chaos, there's a lot of chaos.
Starting point is 00:21:56 also opportunity. That's a quote from Sun Su, referencing the idea that when we are backed into a corner of some sort, or when we are low, when we're vulnerable, when we're at our worst, that's when the door opens to transform. Right. And we talk about this all the time, right? There's, there's, I can give you an infinite amount of videos on this channel talking about moving into fear, that state of the unknown, breaking down what we know. And I think a lot of people hear that. But perhaps don't understand why. And that's why I wanted to make this video, because when I understood why, Like so many things, my perspective changed.
Starting point is 00:23:00 And this was a big one. It was big with regard to how I saw my life, my role in, you know, the trials and tribulations of the world. Why do one thing that scares you every day? Why do the difficult thing? And the best explanation I've ever heard, I was listening to one of Jordan. Peterson's online lectures. He's talking about order and chaos. Right?
Starting point is 00:23:35 Our natural inclination, our understanding is that chaos equals bad. When we think chaos, we think moving pieces, we think, you know, disaster, something we need to move away from. And that in itself is the problem. That instinct or that rash, you know, understanding. In reality, chaos is just as important as order. They are night and day. You can't have one without the other and you need both. Too much order is when we are stuck in a status quo, when there is a lack of growth, when things are very structured, very simple, and they just
Starting point is 00:24:27 feel the same, right? We become accustomed to a certain truth. That is order. Chaos is, as I've said in the past, taking something, smashing it against a wall, picking up those pieces and building something new. And upon building, you've changed whatever that was just a little bit. You've changed your understanding a little bit
Starting point is 00:24:53 of yourself, of that object, and of the world, because life is a perpetual staircase. It is being on a step. stepping out into some crazy unknown where you no longer understand what is going on, leveling up, growing, figuring it out, picking those pieces up, and then moving on to the next step. It is building and breaking and building and breaking and building and breaking. So why step out into the unknown? The unknown is the only way to break the status quo.
Starting point is 00:25:30 The unknown is the door into a next level, a new you, a new reality. When you look at it, human beings want to bucket things into good or bad. Right? And when the reality is most of the time, the truth and the value, the reality is in the gray area. Right. So when we think about the good times, you know, we think this is what we want. This is ideal. You know, things are fluid.
Starting point is 00:25:57 They're simple. But that is antithetical to change, right? Change comes from chaos. Just like when I thought things were going wrong, you know, my first thought was always, oh my God, the world's ending. This is not good. We need to find a way to completely mitigate this,
Starting point is 00:26:16 to change the situation. Now, when the wheels fall off that metaphorical wagon, what I think is, well, here is the opportunity. Here's the opportunity to build that new step, to create a new order. so that I can live my life differently. See, we don't level up unless the situation around us requires that we do so. Sometimes life doesn't give us a choice, right?
Starting point is 00:26:45 Sometimes the world backs us into a corner. But there are a lot of situations where we need to manufacture that chaos. We need to drive that change, climb up that ladder. It's funny to think about some of those people that we emulate that we look up to. And, you know, people don't talk about the risks that were taken. And how many times they picked up their life, they picked up their status quo and smashed it with the hammer. So that they could rebuild it and have something a little bit more sturdy, a little bit bigger, a little bit stronger. a little bit stronger.
Starting point is 00:27:33 That's how wisdom is created. You know, when I look at that cycle now, and I see it as the answer. You know, when I haven't had one of those calls or Zoom meetings or haven't created something, haven't, you know, fill in the blank, that gives me that feeling in my stomach of at least some semblance of anxiety,
Starting point is 00:27:59 I'm not growing. Right? The things that gave me anxiety five years ago, most of them are commonplace today. Right. That chaos is very much order now. So what's going to be the new thing? Right? That was the ceiling.
Starting point is 00:28:16 Now it's the floor. Well, what's the new ceiling? And that's on us to create. That onus is on us to build. Constructing a different world means reassembling the building. pieces. And so I want that message to be clear. I want everyone to understand that when someone says, you know, what you want is on the other side of fear or keep going. Don't give up. Well, why? The reason is, is because that chaos is your ticket to the next level, the next staircase.
Starting point is 00:28:58 that anxiety and sometimes that suffering is a portal to transformation and it's hard in the moment to understand that you know I'd never sit here and say it's easy but you know me and one of the things that changed my life is the understanding that the best things are not easy the value is in what's difficult the meaning is in that unknown I think life is a beautiful thing because the pieces we need are everywhere around us. And it's a really cool realization. It's like everything you need exists. It's out there.
Starting point is 00:29:51 It's waiting for you to pick it up. It's waiting. It'll correspond with the picture you want to paint, the road you want to take. But that requires stepping off the stage you're on and heading. towards another. So I want to leave you with that, that understanding that you are climbing a staircase to something greater, to an evolved self. You're taking your potential and you're making something with it. That means you won't always be comfortable. And when you look back, you'll be grateful. You'll be grateful for those trials and tribulations. You'll be grateful for that chaos. You'll be grateful for that
Starting point is 00:30:45 chaos because it will be what made you. So I'm going to share a life lesson with you, something that over the years has been a true game changer. Ready? It's simple. It's very simple. Like most things, it's easy to understand. It's easy to comprehend.
Starting point is 00:31:22 It's the implementation. That's the challenge, right? But it's the idea that progress is not always a visible step forward. Growth is not always a measurable inch or mile, you know, to feel good about it, to celebrate. It's not always a tangible victory or pat on the back. It's a smile about it. Sometimes it's sidesteping. Sometimes it's stepping backwards, reminding ourselves to look up and gain perspective.
Starting point is 00:31:50 Because we are always inclined to look at the immediate. That's what feels good. And this lesson says, no, there's a big picture to keep in mind. It reels us in. The big picture is what gives us purpose. It drives our happiness. That thing we want on the top of it. of the hill, the North Star, the X on the map, that's what's sustainable.
Starting point is 00:32:12 And I say it's been a game changer for me because, you know, one of my biggest adversaries over the years has been that voice in my head, almost pleading with me to indulge in the thing that will bring that immediate result. It's money now, growth now, validation now. There's comfort there. Our minds want that satisfaction. That's why you see all those guys standing next to whiteboard saying they have the formula to make you rich tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:32:37 We want tomorrow. We believe in some capacity that that can be real tomorrow. But that's what tends to lead us astray. And so I've spent a lot of time reflecting over the years on how to incentivize those steps that aren't immediately impactful. There's not the flashy metal you're going to get right now,
Starting point is 00:32:55 but I know that if I do it, it's going to bring me to my long-term goal. How do I incentivize that? Because, like I said, the natural inclination is to dismiss it. I'm walking laterally across the mountain so that ultimately I can find the most applicable path and ascend. And that's a scary thing.
Starting point is 00:33:15 You know, building long term gives you very little to immediately slap on a resume. To brag or rant about at holiday parties. There's nothing flashy to impress with, but it's believing in a long-term game, doing what most people can't, trading that certainty that you could have had for an extraordinary later.
Starting point is 00:33:34 It's never a loss to do what has to be done so that you can position yourself for the future. Sometimes you have to wade through the muck, work quietly in the dark, so that you can build something that you feel will have an impact. It's not a loss to step backwards to tweak the things you're not happy with. It's not a loss to explore or question or reinvent. It's true those actions in and of themselves aren't going to put money immediately in your pockets. But if you find the discipline to see the big picture, you realize that long term those things bring happiness, contentment, excitement, which guess what,
Starting point is 00:34:09 leads to accomplishment and progress and the financial stability that you're looking for. Chasing flashy things, chasing the immediate moment, yeah, I'd get you a quick rush, a nice blast of dopamine, but it's empty. Ultimately, it's unfulfilling because nothing worth having is quick. That's life. but it's often the illusion that guides us. You'll never see how many auditions the 33-year-old actor went through before he was cast in a major film. You don't see that.
Starting point is 00:34:42 You don't see the countless hours and shows and midnight gigs in front of three people that the rock star endured. You just don't. It's not celebrating. We celebrate what we see, and what I've learned is that the most important things
Starting point is 00:34:53 they're just not visible to the naked eye. And it's funny. It's like people, they're ashamed or embarrassed by the fact that they're climbing to the top of their own. to something truly significant to them because the person next to them is bragging about blindly leaping three steps. And that's great. Progress is great, but unless it's taking you to where you want to be most, is it a win? I have many friends that have left six-figure or higher jobs to
Starting point is 00:35:18 podcast or create or start their own businesses. And people's first reaction is always like, wow, look what you have. Look what you're walking away from. We see scarcity. We are naturally inclined to see life through a lens of scarcity, you need to remember that. That's what we do. We establish and protect our well-being. That's why I've worked so hard to transform my thinking over the years. To look out and think, who cares what I had? Look what's out there. There are no limitations to what can be yours. If you're not on top of the world, make it happen. And I understand people are complex. Situations, they're not easy, they're intricate. Everyone's different. Everything is different, but there's a principle that's consistent.
Starting point is 00:36:00 And it's that you can always improve your situation. That will never be false. To some degree you can improve your situation, there's always opportunity. It's just what you see. A friend of mine sent me a text yesterday, saying the past and the future, they're just imagination.
Starting point is 00:36:14 All you have is now. Everything other than split second is the story you're deciding to tell yourself. That's it. Think about that. We're operating off what we decide is real or imaginary, possible or impossible. We're living in a world that is our own.
Starting point is 00:36:29 There's no them or they or crowd, just individual people, all telling themselves some variation of a story. And so taking this back to the point, caving into that pressure, accommodating to the now so that we feel important, so that our self-worth sees that temporary spike, it neglects the opportunity.
Starting point is 00:36:48 It makes us feel like we're stepping forward, that we're progressing, but in reality, are we? That voice, that pressure to conform to what will impress Richard next door, it will always lead to, it will always be to our detriment. And it takes truly what I believe is the most pure,
Starting point is 00:37:05 important aspect of life and sticks it in the closet so that we can feel like we're on par with everyone else. And I'll never forget starting out. And I bring this up a lot because it was one of those moments where I knew I recognized that a huge shift was happening in my life,
Starting point is 00:37:20 went out with some friends from college. And one's working for a senator, one's at Goldman, one's a lawyer and I'm thinking, well, you know, geez, I just quit my job. But I have this really cool idea for a YouTube channel. And I just, you know, I don't think any girls are going to be swooning over that. And I struggled, right? At the time, it was difficult for me.
Starting point is 00:37:38 And I look back and I'm just thankful every day that at the time I was able to locate somewhere in my soul, the courage to stick that out to believe that if I executed on this dream, I could have an impact. Because like I mentioned above, it was painful in the moment. But when you think big picture, bigger things happen. I'm doing things now that I never, ever would have been able to do. If I didn't have that desire to do the unconventional thing, if I stopped at sort of the discomfort, or if I stopped when I felt like I was losing this imaginary race to those people around me,
Starting point is 00:38:12 I wouldn't have the creative flexibility that I have now. I wouldn't be able to do what I do now. I wouldn't have the people in my life that I have now. You have to earn that. every single day. And it makes me wonder how many people stopped when they could have taken their own path, brought their own unique vision into existence
Starting point is 00:38:32 if they didn't retreat when they felt like they were a lone wolf, when it felt like they were losing a race that didn't exist, when they felt like their neighbors were getting ahead, or their classmates or their friends were doing the conventional thing, so they had to. They were too scared to step backwards, and I'm telling you right now,
Starting point is 00:38:50 I'm telling you that step backwards, that ability to temporarily find yourself, to create yourself, that will mean everything. That will open doors for you that would never have existed. You never would have come across them because you would have been too scared to look for them. You have to make opportunities. Simple metaphor. Gumball machine. Gumball does not come out if you don't put the quarter in and turn it.
Starting point is 00:39:17 It's a price that has to be paid. Except in reality, the price is a lot higher than a quarter. Because we're conditioned to want to fit in. We're terrified to look like we don't know what we're doing. Every significant thing around you stemmed from someone pushing into that unknown. It came from someone risking everything. It's not easy when your family doesn't know what you're doing, your friends don't know what you're doing,

Starting point is 00:40:37 These things are delusioned. As far as results are concerned, the word immediately is a con artist. Action should be immediate, but results. No, they are gradual. They require. persistence, stick with it. Remind yourself to look up because that's what you're after. It's a pursuit. You're building a foundation. You're creating the things that permanently alter the artistic and political
Starting point is 00:41:01 and social landscapes. That's remarkable. It's the road few have the patience to walk. Remind yourself why you're skipping the small stuff, brushing off the little winds and losses. Why building something substantial in silence is more powerful than gloating and screaming. dreaming at the top of your lungs after every visible step. Look up.
