Starting point is 00:00:06 A word we throw around all the time is difficult. How difficult will the journey be? How hard is it going to be to succeed? This is more or less asking, is a desirable outcome likely? We're asking if it's worth our time. Right? If something's difficult, we associate that with the low probability of success. But that's not the right way of looking at it.
Starting point is 00:00:34 If you want something enough, difficult becomes your best friend. It's your greatest asset. And this is, one, because of the growth that comes with it, but two, because very few people are willing to chase it down. The reality is, most people are average. And that's just looking at the definition of the word. Right? If everyone was great, greatness wouldn't mean anything.
Starting point is 00:01:02 There's something special about it. It's unique. It sets people apart. We generally live amongst people, places, and expectations that make up everything we know. That's our normal. That's our box. But what's particularly interesting
Starting point is 00:01:19 is that the people we celebrate, the accomplishments we admire, they go far beyond this sort of confined view of the world. So where is the line? Something's weird, it's abnormal, it's looked down upon until suddenly it's not. You snap your finger and it's cherished. That guitar player practicing 15 hours a day,
Starting point is 00:01:43 It's lame. They don't have a real job. They're not contributing anything to society and then he or she puts out an album that revolutionizes music and they're a hero. The whole thought process is counterintuitive and that's why the words difficult and great are so closely related Not because it's physically stressful, but because great comes with a hefty mental price tag Difficult means you are consistently doing what the average normal and unspectacular deemed to be too great a sacrifice. They're not asking if it can be done. They're not asking if it's possible. What they are really asking, what they want to know
Starting point is 00:02:26 is if they have to break through everyday normality to achieve a result. Do we have to make ourselves uncomfortable? Do we have to give more than we normally would? Do we have to be better than we were yesterday? If that answer is yes, the vast majority say thank you, but no thank you. And that's where defining opportunities open up.
Starting point is 00:02:50 Great means you had the desire to set yourself apart. Difficult means you had the dedication and the drive to do the little things no one else wanted to do. There is nothing miraculous about greatness. It is not divine. It is not incredible. It's simply seeing the word difficult as a staircase instead of a brick wall.
Starting point is 00:03:16 It means you get the opportunity to both give more of yourself and get more from the world. It is your secret door, your passageway. If the incremental progress, the growth and the sacrifice are worth the prize, easy, difficult, and everything in between fades away. The only thing worth the second of your time is making sure that you're making sure that you're that every step you take points you in the direction of where you want to be most. There's a man and he's walking through a circus. And what he's noticing is he looks around.
Starting point is 00:04:08 He sees these massive elephants, right? I'm sure everyone knows how big and strong an elephant is. They have a rope around one of their legs connected to something. And that's what's holding them in place. And he's looking at them thinking, how are these enormous creatures being held in place by these little ropes, right? They could easily, you know, have enough strength to just break free and run around, yet they're not. They're all staying right where they are.
Starting point is 00:04:36 And so as he keeps walking, he finds someone and he asks them, you know, how is it? These elephants are constrained like that. And the person explains, well, when they're little, we do the same thing. We take a rope, we tie it to one of their legs, connect. to something and at that point they are too small. They can't go anywhere. And every day, you know, we do the same thing. And as they get older, they don't realize that they're big enough or strong enough to break free. Like they maintain the idea that they're shackled by that rope or tied by that rope, that they're bound to the same place. It's mental.
Starting point is 00:05:19 And in fact, most limitations are mental. These elephants don't even realize their constraints are self-imposed. And if you take a step back, if you look at your own world, I think what you'd find is there are more of these ropes than we'd like to admit. And changing that is one awareness and two, a willingness. Like what types of parameters have you made for yourself are you living in just because that's what you've always done?
Starting point is 00:05:58 What is your metaphorical rope? Is it a job? Is it a relationship? Is it a routine? Is it the courage to start something? Like what is holding you back? What stories have you told yourself? Are you living by that dictate your actions and your days and ultimately your happiness
Starting point is 00:06:18 that can change with a tug on a metaphorical rope? See, reality, your life is nothing more than what you've conceded to, what you've allowed it to be. It's a line in the sand. And the message today is so incredibly simple. It's to look around you and pinpoint where those lines can be redrawn. Where that rope needs to be pulled. What invisible walls have you created for yourself? Because in life, there's one thing.
Starting point is 00:06:53 truth right things only stop when you do life stops when you decide to stop and sometimes you realize it and sometimes you don't sometimes you need the reminder to look around you and realize how courageous you are how much you're capable of if you see beyond the immediate because reality was not destined to be it's what you've allowed it's what you've created it's what you've accepted so let's tear down those walls and build something incredible. Have an amazing Saturday. Catch you guys tomorrow. There's a quote that states,
Starting point is 00:07:47 life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. Which means that your reaction is drastically more important than the circumstance. And that's critical to know. It's critical to understand that nothing, No one in life has more power over your own situation than you. And there's an old story that hits on this point, exactly.
Starting point is 00:08:17 There's a father and a daughter. And basically the daughter's complaining. She's complaining about life, how difficult things are. She's just not how she's going to make it in whatever it is she's doing. I mean, the bottom line is she's tired of the day to day. Right. And her father gets this idea. He says, come with me into the kitchen.
Starting point is 00:08:37 And he gets three pots of water, puts them on the stove, and turns the burner zone. As soon as they start boiling, he drops a potato in the first one, an egg in the second one, and some coffee beans in the third one. And after some time goes by and they boil a little bit, he pulls them out, right? He puts the potato in a bowl. He puts the egg in a bowl, and he takes a ladle, and he puts some of the coffee in a cup. He says, what do you see? She says, well, I see a potato.
Starting point is 00:09:08 I see eggs and I see coffee. He says, yeah, but look closer. There's more there. And she goes and she touches the potato and it's now soft. And he hands her the bowl with the boiled egg. And she takes the shell off and breaks it open. She sees that it's hard inside. Then finally he asked her to take a sip of the coffee and, you know, she smells it.
Starting point is 00:09:31 She takes a sip and a smile comes to her face. she says so what does all this mean what are you trying to say and he says well the potato when I dropped it in the water it was it was rigid it was tough it was uncompromising but in the boiling water it became soft weak then you have the egg that was basically the opposite this delicate layer protecting a liquid center and the boiling water made it hard
Starting point is 00:09:59 and then there was the coffee that wasn't just changed by the situation. It created something new. It took the same adversity and used it as a lever to bring something beautiful into existence. He then looks at his daughter and says, look, when things become challenging,
Starting point is 00:10:25 when things become difficult, which one are you? What's your approach? See, maybe the question is not about how challenging the situation is, right? Maybe we've been asking the wrong question. Maybe it's how do you transform yourself and by default, the world around you? How do you take your strengths, your values, your loves, your joys, your happiness, and let that lead you into something bigger?
Starting point is 00:10:58 When life gets hard and it does, what do you become? I always remind myself, you know, we are not defined by life at peak state. As much as I wish that were the case, right? We're not shaped by the easy days or the times that we floated by. Because those times are great, they're enjoyable, but they're not what make or break us. It's the times that challenge us and ask us to be what we have not yet become. That's the good stuff. And this is another one of those, you know, simple but not easy type things, because on paper it makes sense.
Starting point is 00:11:48 It's understood. But it's an outlook that manifests over time. It's slowly stacked piece by piece and brick by brick, realizing that every situation provides you with tools to make something out of an apparent nothing. And then it waits. because fate is in your hands. And I can certainly think of times in my life. That's one of the reasons I love these stories. I can reflect where each one of those pots of boiling water was relevant.
Starting point is 00:12:25 I can think of times I was too headstrong, like the metaphorical potato. I thought success would be easy. I thought projects would be simple to execute. I spent months doing things that just weren't good because I didn't ask what is the world need. I asked myself, what do I want to give the world? And there has to be a marriage there, right? And it was a quick reminder that the world owes me nothing. I was humbled or softened as the story goes.
Starting point is 00:12:53 I've been the egg, I've been timid, I've been uncertain, thin-skinned, worrying about what people would say or the content I was creating, worried about perception, how would things look if I failed? And very quickly, I learned that when life is, a game of comparison or one-upmanship when you do things for reasons and people other than yourself can't win you overcompensate you do things for the wrong reasons and you lose yourself you become hardened and then there's the good stuff right getting to the coffee not bowing down to the circumstances but shaping not letting life dictate how the story
Starting point is 00:13:41 goes or the fate of your character. And what's interesting is I'm pretty sure that being that metaphorical egg and the potato, they lay the foundation to become the coffee, the life lessons, the falling down, the picking my ego up off the floor,
Starting point is 00:14:00 learning to trust myself, not be led by the opinions and expectations of others. You essentially learn that you can take the world around you and change it, that it is malleable, it is flexible. You have that power. You have that ability.
Starting point is 00:14:19 It's up to you to believe it. And that's critical because no one comes along and cosigns that understanding for you. It's an internal process. You start to learn that things aren't there to provide instruction. They're there to propel you. But can you see the unknown as the opportunity, the obstacle is the way and the loss is the armor that you pick up
Starting point is 00:14:47 during the journey. And so, you know, all of these words essentially come to one point. And that point is you have so much more control over your life than you think you do. As I've said before, you are stronger than you think you are. You are more resilient than you can even imagine. And when life tests you, and again, it will, remember that the challenges are not happening to you, but for you. The world isn't taking away what you have, it's giving you what you need.
Starting point is 00:15:33 So long as you're willing to adapt with it, to grow, expand out. Because you not only have. the ability to change yourself, but the world as well. What does it mean to give 100% effort on something? Is it possible to say with absolute certainty that you couldn't have done better? How do you know that you couldn't have run one second faster, done one more rep, scored one point higher? How do you know that there wasn't more in you to give? In terms of human potential, there's no such thing as a limit.
Starting point is 00:16:43 It's a fabricated, completely negative, debilitating idea. So why? Why in a million years would you put obstacles in front of yourself that aren't there? In reality, you can always be one step better, one step further than you are now. That's a fact. And simply knowing that knocks down walls, it opens doors for you to make moves. to progress. Warren Buffett has a great quote on maximizing effort. He's speaking from a business standpoint and he says the one thing that is absolutely sure to kill a business is complacency.
Starting point is 00:17:27 Being comfortable with where you are, thinking that your current effort is sufficient, that it's enough. It isn't. And if you get comfortable, someone willing to pay a steeper price will come along and take what's yours. And there is always someone working hard to to do just that. When you think about your dreams, what you're striving toward, I'm sure you have some plan, some routine day in, day out to get there, to make it happen. Maybe you're moving forward, maybe you're in a rough spot. But regardless of your situation, there are positively untapped opportunities
Starting point is 00:18:07 to move quicker, to be better. And these opportunities, they just sit there, and they'll sit there for an eternity if you don't recognize them and utilize them. I'll use the example of an athlete. When you break it down, an athlete's work is comprised of physical training, you have the mental component, their diet. And to say you want to be the best is one thing,
Starting point is 00:18:34 but if you can't strip down your goal into these simple components and ask yourself, how can I be a little better in each area? You know, you won't grow to the level you're capable of. You won't be the elite athlete. You're missing the key ingredients to success. Even sitting on the couch, watching TV. You know, it's a normal thing.
Starting point is 00:19:00 We all do it. You unwind, you relax for a few minutes. But think about taking that half hour and reallocating it. And instead, sending three emails to people, you know, who have been successful in your field, whether you know them or not. No, who have done what you're trying to do. See if you can connect, have a valuable conversation. Maybe it results in nothing.
Starting point is 00:19:21 Maybe it creates a relationship that changes your life. Who knows? But I can tell you for damn sure that the TV will not do that. And this is an arbitrary example. But I think it's an important one because it shows that if you truly want something, you'll use every opportunity to get better, even the little ones, because every second is a game changer. Always be asking yourself,
Starting point is 00:19:48 Please be asking yourself, what can you be doing differently? What can you be doing better? Never be content with where you are. Be analytical. Be searching for the next step because there is always a next step. And realizing this is just the beginning. I was once told that to become who you might be, you have to walk away from what you are. That maybe I couldn't see it at the time.
Starting point is 00:20:44 But somewhere, locked away in the depths of my soul, existed the spark. The flicker of light that would change everything. All I had to do was find it. Those footsteps, they define your destiny. A symphony that becomes your soundtrack, wind for your sails. They are the song that will go. guide your journey. In your pockets, they can be empty if your heart is full.
Starting point is 00:21:31 The book can be unwritten if you hold the pen. The path can be unclear if you just trust yourself. This is the lens that illuminates your world. And when you fall, promise to get back up. When you feel misplaced, remember that getting lost is how you find yourself. When you're scared, know that it's darkest before the dawn. These are the stairs that will take you higher. Tired is not defeated.
Starting point is 00:22:13 Wandering is not lost. Vulnerability is not weakness. Mistakes are not defining. Hardship is not a deterrent. These are pages in the story you're writing. And it's the story of a lifetime. So pull back the curtains. Dance in the moonlight.
Starting point is 00:22:48 Sing at the top of your lungs so that every soul from here to infinity ignites. Life is too short to miss a moment too beautiful to overlook and here you are with a map, a key and a horizon waving you on. So follow it. The airwaves past the mountains beyond the desert, follow it until your legs are weak and your eyes wide. Let it be the song that carries.
Starting point is 00:23:34 you home. This is the story of a lifetime. When you ask people what they think stands between them and their goals, there are some pretty common responses. Inexperience, fear, maybe hesitation, time management. These are obstacles we all have to overcome. Certainly they're all valid. They're all very real. And I recently took this question, spent some time with it. In terms of my own progress, I looked back at the past year and a half, starting from the inception of your world within to right now. Substantial progress has been made. I'm happy with where I am. But at the same time, you know, there were periods of stagnation, where maybe the wheels weren't turning as fast as I'd like them to. So now that some times past, I have the luxury of examining my lessons learned. And of all of them, the most important is the realization that perfection is a myth.
Starting point is 00:25:07 And not only a myth, but it's deceitful. It's detrimental to success. See, perfection is, by its very definition, flawless. And in theory, that's ideal. That's what we want. But in reality, it's impossible. Our value lies not in chasing around. this false idea of perfection, but in making progress.
Starting point is 00:25:33 If you succumb to the idea of perfect, you're establishing an expectation that cannot be satisfied. You aren't allowing yourself to dive in, to gain momentum, to take flight, because you're questioning your judgment. You're holding back. You aren't putting yourself out there. If you're not perfect, if your work isn't perfect, You don't want it to be seen.
Starting point is 00:25:59 But perfect isn't real. The only way to obtain excellence is to move with what you have right now. No, you won't be flawless, but you can improve every single day. There's great benefit to creating something, throwing it against a wall and seeing if it sticks. If it does, great, that's a win. If it doesn't, you regroup, you reassess, and you throw it. But again, that's growth. And some growth is always better than no growth.
Starting point is 00:26:33 Over the course of my life, you know, I probably can't count the amount of times I've said the phrase, Rome wasn't built in a day. But I've never found a situation where it applied so directly because you don't build a city. You create buildings. You design roads and everything converges to become a city. Those sequences of events, trials and errors, growth, that becomes your roam. So it would be crazy for your expectations not to be managed accordingly. If your plan was to become fit, but you won't even step into the gym because you don't look like Brad Pitt in Troy, you're not going to go anywhere, right? To get to that level, you need to first allow yourself to be vulnerable, to step into this situation and learn, evolve into it.
Starting point is 00:27:25 that vision you have for yourself. Another example that reinforces this point is an interview I saw recently with Ed Shearren. He's talking about his first shows, the first music he ever wrote. You know, playing it for his audience. He still has the recordings, and they're horrible. But that's what got him where he is now, right?
Starting point is 00:27:45 That determination, that progress. He wasn't intimidated to get out there and grow. And now we can sit back, you know, reflect and joke a little bit about his journey. You know, missed opportunity, regret, that rarely comes from going too fast, from being too adventurous. Comes from being too conservative.
Starting point is 00:28:06 Whereas when I look at my greatest accomplishments, the creations I'm most proud of, sure, networking, research, experience played a role, but more than anything, it was having the trust in myself to start, to begin, to acknowledge that, yes, I am flawed, but I accept it because those flaws are the seeds
Starting point is 00:28:27 that enable something truly unique to transpire. And now comes the part I enjoy, right, where I can take my acquired wisdom and share it with you because I guarantee every single person listening to this has something they're hesitant to start, to do, or to become. Never lose sight of the fact that a goal takes time. There's something you grow into, But you need to first allow yourself to take that leap.
Starting point is 00:28:56 As far as I'm concerned, the only perfect thing in existence is the current moment. Because it is the first step to everything you could ever want. I want to talk about a myth. And it's a myth that's an idea that's commonplace in our lives and it's rooted in a lot of the decisions we make as well as the actions that we do not. It's this idea of certainty, of a formula, something that's already out there that will get you from point A to point B. See, breaking it down further, there are two things you need to know about certainty. One is that it's an idea derived from fiction. There's no way of knowing exactly what the top of the mountain will look like.
Starting point is 00:30:09 And waiting for that to materialize, to have that crystal clear step-by-step form. It creates stagnation. We don't have perfection so we don't move. It's one of those things where you wait and days, turn to days and more days and weeks and months and years and eventually regret. Why? Because we were not certain. And what do we do? See, this leads to the second piece.
Starting point is 00:30:41 We study everything. We live in a time where we have access to unlimited. to unlimited resources. And it's this incredible thing, right? We can study the LeBron James, the Jeff Bezos, the Gary Vaynerchukes of the world. We can see exactly what they did. We can see how they think,
Starting point is 00:31:02 how they approach problems, how they get to solutions. And on one hand, it's an unbelievable benefit. Knowledge is power. But on the other hand, there's a cost. And this cost can be extremely detrimental because it mitigates the most important thing in your life and that is your unique self. What makes you valuable?
Starting point is 00:31:33 What do you bring to the world? What makes you tick? And I'll tell you right now, you do not find that by studying how Jeff Bezos started Amazon and attempting to duplicate it. You don't find that by simply copying Liberation. on James' workout routine. Your value,
Starting point is 00:31:54 your source of happiness, you know, that's discovered moving forward through ups and downs, falling and getting back up, not once, not twice, but repeatedly. And it's through those trials and tribulations that you carve out who you are.
Starting point is 00:32:14 But if you wait for the perfect moment, you'll never find it, which means you will never go. through this process. I often think back to my days in the corporate world in the insurance industry, being in a situation that I was not thriving in. And if someone sat me down and said, Eddie, what do you want to do? What is the top of the mountain? What does success look like to you? I couldn't answer that. But what I did know is that I loved to create. I loved to speak, to write, compose music, produce videos, just put out content. That's what I was
Starting point is 00:32:49 destined to do and I knew it. But if I waited to move until I knew exactly what my life would look like until there was, you know, this path perfectly paved to the finish line, I'd still be there. I'd be in a cubicle crunching numbers and excel in a weirdly painted beige room. But sometimes you have to move forward. Trust your gut, your instincts. what you love to do, embrace the idea,
Starting point is 00:33:22 the fact that you'll fall down and you'll fall down and you'll get back up. But that it will shape you and that as you go on living your passion, your purpose, thriving in life, the pieces come together. You have to trust that
Starting point is 00:33:38 even when it's not certain because I'll tell you what is certain. If you do not move, you will not achieve. That world will spin right around you. I read a book a few months ago called Hatching Twitter. Simple read. It's about the founders of Twitter. Jack Ebb, all these guys with their different ideas and different notions of what this company is going to be.
Starting point is 00:34:06 You know, it started out as, I believe, a radio, online radio company. And it evolved. And it evolved. And there were pivots and adjustments and alterations. And they kept moving forward and they kept growing. And there's one point where they have a valuation of millions and millions of dollars. And they're having a conversation like, what do we have? What is our company?
Starting point is 00:34:26 Is real-time news the focus? Are we promoting social interact? Like, what is it? How do we brand this? How do we market it? What do we have on our hands? This is a company worth millions of dollars. Talk about just moving forward, taking one step at a time.
Starting point is 00:34:44 Things will change. They'll evolve, but you have to give yourself an opportunity for that to happen. Imagine if they never left. the garage or whatever room they started the company and because they didn't know what it would be in 2017. We wouldn't have Twitter. And that applies to everything around us, right? We have this idea that, you know, things were meant to be. They were destined.
Starting point is 00:35:10 No. Things exist around us because of risks that were taken. Because people pushed forward until they got a result, until they knew what they were meant to do and it materialized. And that is life. So don't be scared to take that step. Don't be nervous to fall down. You need that.
Starting point is 00:35:36 The world needs that because without it will have could-bees and some days, but not the existence that we want, that you deserve, that you're capable of acquiring. No longer is certainty the standard. Progress is the standard. Your life will change. In a limitless world, why set your sights on the obtainable?
Starting point is 00:36:34 The prize within an arm's reach. Why not think bigger? Our expectations are the foundation for our accomplishments. The target you aim for is more than likely going to be the target you hit. Which means it's quite possible to do exactly what you set. out to do and still drastically underachieve for the sole reason that you are worth more. You are capable of more than you give yourself credit for, but like anything. If you don't recognize and do something about it, the impact will be minimal.
Starting point is 00:37:20 It doesn't matter that you're the fastest person in the world if you never sprint. It's impossible to stumble into excellence. Because to get there, you need to, one, understand that something greater exists, and two, understand that you are worthy of it. And anything you do, it's better to aim high, to try and accomplish too much. Be bigger than reality, larger than life. And what you'll find in maintaining these monumental expectations is that you grow along with them. You realize that what was acceptable yesterday is no longer good enough. that it was merely a stepping stone.
Starting point is 00:38:04 The things you're capable of the life that's possible for you is unfathomable to the human mind. Endless opportunities are not black and white. They're not reassuring because they haven't happened yet. They're not visible or tangible, but that's okay. Just know that no matter where you are or what you want, more exists. If you're willing to go to another level,
Starting point is 00:38:28 there is something bigger, period. So take a look at the targets that you've set. Don't waste time asking yourself whether there's something greater there is. Ask yourself if you're willing to step up to move outside your comfort zone and get it.
