As long as I've been alive, there's existed a battle between what I want in the moment and what I need.
And it transforms. It takes different shapes, but its impact is always felt.
And so the question remains, in spite of the option to concede the temporary way out,
are we willing to endure the now for a beautiful forever, commit to that delayed gratification?
Hold off, just a little longer, do a little more.
See, every time I hold the line, every time I refuse to give in,
the victory tends to be just a little sweeter.
So what is this force keeping us from greatness?
This invisible, unquantifiable adversary,
telling us to stop, to submit, to just accept things as they are?
Well, as Stephen Presfield states in his book, The War of Art,
this is resistance.
The ego in disguise, it's the desire to stay the same,
pushing us away from the very action necessary
to obtain what we truly want,
not in the moment, but in our souls.
Our true reason for being, after all progress is happiness.
So we follow this train of thought.
The next logical question must be,
well, can we control this enemy?
This resistance?
as it turns out not only is the answer yes,
but one's ability to do just that makes all the difference.
We can harness that demon that lobbies so hard for the status quo.
We can learn to laugh every time it throws a fit when we attempt to change ourselves,
our situation, our environment.
It can be told no.
In fact, Pressfield states that people who live free lives have learned to master
themselves. People that can't master themselves will find someone else to rule over them,
whether it be excuses, critics, or other outside constraints. See, the key, the answer couldn't
be simpler. It's not easy, but it's simple. Show up. And as a writer, I really resonated with
this, this line. The hardest part isn't writing. It's sitting down to write. It's sitting down to write. It's
arriving.
And now life can flow through you.
You're able to be that messenger
that carries the divine
so that it can be shared with the world
distributed to the masses.
But you must first say no
to that voice proclaiming that it's not important.
That it doesn't matter.
You must tear down the idea
that you're not good enough.
Walk up and sit
in that metaphorical seat.
whatever it is for you.
Begin speaking, writing, painting,
analyzing, constructing, devising,
but you must sit down and begin.
That is the essence of the war of art.
The war that is you versus you,
that resistance
claiming that your next move
is too little to matter,
that the same is the best.
But you have to see beyond what's the
beyond what's in front of you.
It's why the author is so adamant about not giving in saying if you cave in today, you're twice as likely to cave in tomorrow.
It's like talking to a telemarketer.
You cave, you give an inch, and it's over.
See those little decisions?
The ones we're so inclined to overlook, the ones we say, eh, we'll come back tomorrow.
They're insignificant.
That's essentially making a hole right through the center of a dam.
Eventually, the entire thing is coming down.
But the good news, those same little decisions are within your grasp.
You can own them, master them, and ultimately master yourself.
Start by simply showing up when you don't want to because this is war.
And this war, the one fought every day, is what will ultimately hand you the keys to the kingdom.
There's a quote by Custia motto, Mike Tyson's trainer at one point.
He said, the hero and the coward both feel the same thing.
But the hero uses his fear, projects it onto his opponent.
While the coward runs, it's the same thing, fear, but it's what you do with it that matters.
In other words, it's not that some of us can skip fear altogether, remove it, eliminate it.
No, we all at some point or another find ourselves stand.
face to face with fear.
The question is,
what do you do in that moment,
when it's your turn?
I've always said fear doesn't get easier.
It doesn't hurt less,
but it's not supposed to.
You can't change what fear is,
but you can change what it does for you,
how it impacts your life.
Your life is determined
by the relationship you build
with that four-letter word.
When does reality shift?
It shifts when your hands trumbed, when your palms sweat, when there's that feeling of uneasiness in your stomach, when the easiest thing in the world to do is walk away, but you carry on anyway.
There's a rewiring that occurs.
When that same trigger that historically tells you to run ultimately becomes your invitation to accept
something greater to become something more. And it's funny how that works, that same feeling.
The same idea that acts as a stop sign for most people, most of the world, is different for you.
It becomes your reason to elevate life to something meaningful. The same reason you're able to
overcome limitation and make happiness a priority. It's that you learned no complex formula or secret
code, but simply understood that the scary thing is most often the right thing.
There's a saying everything you want is on the other side of fear.
Not a one-time permanent decision, but every day crossing that barrier that separates
comfort and opportunity.
Standing in that doorway of what is and what can be.
Robin Sharma says, being scared is part of being alive, so accept it.
walk through it. In essence, to avoid fear is to skip what makes life worth living.
The peak experiences that we remember, that's the fork in the road we face, the predicament we
are presented with, the comfortable, unremarkable existence where the road spawned from curiosity,
the journey of a lifetime. And so next time we find ourselves in that moment, let us remember
that pain is temporary, but turning around and walking away is forever. Let us remember that
tomorrow is what we make it, and the cost of admission starts now. Let us remember that the
obstacle in front of us is not easy, but it wasn't intended to be, and that's precisely the reason
we must walk through. Stop apologizing. Stop apologizing for who you are, what you believe,
in how you see the world.
Stop apologizing for your failures.
They lift you up.
They push you to be more.
Stop apologizing for being different,
unusual or unique.
There's just saying that if you are lucky enough
to be different, don't ever change, embrace that.
Hold it.
Stop apologizing for taking a path less,
traveled for breaking away from the pack.
It's not an insufficiency.
It doesn't mean you couldn't go their way.
It means you have the courage to be yourself in a world trying to make you someone else.
Stop apologizing for words that don't align with someone else's ideology or worldview.
Your job isn't to appease or conform.
to grab hold of what lights a fire in you
and use it to brighten the world around you.
Stop apologizing for your dreams.
It's okay to not be content where you are.
It's okay to want to grow, to become more.
The roots planting them to the ground, they are not yours.
And why waste the opportunity beyond the horizon of your current existence?
existence. See, having the courage of your convictions is like unlocking your mind.
Realizing that, yeah, you have the key and you've had it all along. No one else gets to set your
parameters. They don't get to tell you what's right or what to believe. The people around you
are not moral arbiters. They're not protectors of truth. Remember that. Remember that no one knows
better than you, what's best for you.
That's why there's power and intuition,
in following your beliefs, your strengths,
in doing what makes you happy, relentlessly pursuing
what makes you feel alive.
The thing about dreams, ideas, potential,
they're always meaningless until they're not.
See, everything is crazy until it exists.
So protect it.
Don't bow down to pressures of now simply because you have not yet built tomorrow.
You will.
If you want it, you will.
Some messages, they are incredibly simple, and this, my friends, is one of those.
You have everything you need to become who you want to be right now.
As you listen to this in real time, you don't need approval or permission or acceptance.
Since you don't need to belong or be told it's normal, you simply need to start to know that you will pick yourself up when you fall and keep going.
Not apologize, but continue placing one foot in front of the other.
Not look externally for a will to carry on that only exists within you.
See, the second you begin rewriting the rules, changing the game, you put yourself in position to emerge.
George, victorious.
Yesterday I drove out a little bit into North Carolina,
parked the car, found a path,
and went on a long hike
to take in some scenery, think about life holistically,
kind of contemplate where I'd go from here and why it matters,
which is always funny to think about, right?
The idea of having to carve out time
amidst our frantic and often chaotic journey to get somewhere
to, well, define where somewhere is.
But I think about that a lot.
Our days consist of so much running around
that I can easily forget
what even my calculated decisions add up to.
Why?
It's a simple enough question.
Perhaps one I could ask more.
Why?
What's with this whole get comfortable with discomfort thing?
Why do I place so much emphasis
on the quote-unquote path less traveled?
Which is a term that, you know,
one of my buddies was recently given me a hard time about using in all my speeches, right?
It must mean something to me.
It's got me here.
But is here better than over there?
After all, it's not out of the realm of possibility that I'm the one who's missing the mark.
And it's okay to examine that possibility.
In fact, that's why I'm here.
And I bounced this around in my head as I made my way up the trail
and noticed as I looked around, everything just felt perfect.
Have you ever had one of those moments where it just seems surreal?
The morning was incredible.
I loved the sound of the earth under my feet as I took each step,
the chirping of the birds in the early morning,
the sun making its way through the trees.
And I thought, it's amazing that you can live 20 minutes from this feeling
and just never experience it.
I guess proof that a decision did not go,
to do nothing, is still very much a decision.
decision. And in this case would have been the less desirable one. I'm glad I went. My phone was in my backpack, and for the first time in a while, I didn't even think about it. My mind was stimulated. My senses were taking in something new, something different, something not my studio or laptop or social media analytics pages. In fact, all that stuff felt kind of trivial now that I was removed from it. And I wondered, why don't I do this more? I thought popped into my head earlier that more.
I thought, hey, that's a cool idea.
I just had to get through that initial pushback,
the hesitancy of, well, what's the point?
What's the desired outcome of a hike?
And after all, this little jaunt,
you're just going to distract you from your work and your progress.
But at that moment,
I think you have to just shut out reason for a second.
You have to remind yourself that there's value, period.
Otherwise, we open the door for rationalizing.
We talk ourselves out of some of the life.
some of life's beautiful secrets.
Sometimes you have to just go.
And as I made my way down this trail further and further,
I started to feel better.
I felt reassured.
Like I had something that I otherwise wouldn't have had,
something that's my own.
And maybe that is it.
Maybe that alone is the reason for everything.
To collect those incredible things, large and small,
that we might not have had.
After all, isn't life just an accumulation?
of memories, of experiences that are spread out like a choose-your-ending children's book.
And with so much control over the outcome, I think that matter deserves my attention.
In order to acquire the good stuff, whether it's in a different location or context or time in my life,
I still learn again and again that to get that, we have to leave some things behind.
And that's the essence of life.
You usually get out what you put in.
And I think about that a lot.
I think about the forks in the road I've come across, those same ones, the life-altering decisions.
I guess it's only human.
You know, walking away from that promising career that I spent my whole life building towards.
Every once in a while, sure, I miss the security.
Leaving this city and the people that made my life what it was, it still haunts me from time to time, trading permanence and structure,
for the freedom to condense my life's work into a laptop, take it anywhere in the world,
world, empowerment can be lonely, right?
And I guess I can't help that in the midst of those situations, the easy decision always
feels like the wrong one.
I've just been pulled by the upside.
I gravitate towards this grandiose version of what life could be on the mark that I hope
to make.
And to me, the scariest thing has always been not having the courage to see more, to explore.
The phrase, what if has always been my adversary.
the monster in the closet, and it's a costly one to slay.
But life is both suffering and infinite beauty.
And it's like you have to choose where you're going to endure pain
and why that matters
so that you can climb the mountain that means everything to you,
that makes life worth it.
In other words, meaningful discomfort now or painful regret later.
And I strongly believe that,
Life is about pursuing something meaningful.
And even the triviality of a hike wants to remind me of this truth.
I could be at home playing guitar, watching Netflix.
Relaxing.
I mean, that would have been easier.
But there's only one way to catch that sunrise over the trees.
And that way is not Netflix.
All those beautiful views, they require an output of energy to reach them.
They come with fear of something going wrong.
and in doubt that perhaps the turn you made wasn't the best one, and that's okay.
But I believe that happiness to be truly fulfilled requires trade-offs.
And with each step, it becomes easier and easier to understand.
For the gym rat, it's the discipline and the belief,
knowing that muscles break down so that they can be built up.
For the relationship to flourish, it's overcoming disagreements,
accommodating the needs of that person that you love
so that they can be the last thing you see before you fall asleep.
For the free spirit, it's walking away from what you know
in pursuit of something that excites and invigorates,
even if you're not entirely sure what it means.
It's about enduring one so that you can collect the other.
Now, what you choose to endure and what you choose to collect is up to you,
but that's what makes life such a beautiful ride.
A roller coaster taking you.
through lows to reach highs into darkness to see how life changing the light is when it pushes its
way through. Little decisions that become the collage that explodes off the paper when you step back
and look. That's what you get back when you make a point to see more. That's why my love affair
with the trivial and the mundane lights my path. It's not just a little thing. It's a microcosm
of my everything. It's my saying yes to the opportunity that we work so hard to. We work so hard.
to ignore in an effort to avoid inconvenience.
But a life worth living is not always convenient.
You could even argue at times, it should be inconvenient.
Because the higher the climb, the more we give of ourselves,
the more precious the world looks from the top down.
And the challenging times, the things we sacrifice and leave behind,
they're not so much a part of the picture as the paint on your palate.
that in breaking down you can now recreate using your own ideals, metrics, and guidelines,
a world that you now have the ability to transform.
That's why life, to me, is nothing more than color, decisions, nothing more than paint, steps,
nothing more than brushstrokes, and life, well, life is nothing and everything.
Which, as the morning breeze reminds me,
is a decision that is entirely my own.
vision or idea in your life starts with a simple understanding,
that it's obtainable, that you can make it real.
That's the beginning of everything.
Self-belief is the gatekeeper that stands between current and future.
See, if you think of reality as these city walls you're living in,
it's not crazy to think that there are going to be people that only know that existence within the walls, right?
That's what they see. That's what most believe. It's how they live. It is only self-belief, a confidence in something greater outside those walls that opens the gate, that expands your reality.
And if you don't believe anything good exists on the other side, why begin? If you don't think you're capable of,
getting there, why start?
And this formula is simple, right?
Let's not overthink it.
We only move towards outcomes that we believe to be possible.
And that's more important than ability, skill set, strength.
I mean, you name it, believing in yourself trumps all that.
Because the person with an inferior skill set, maybe an average natural talent,
but they believe in something and they move towards it,
They give everything for this idea, they know it to be true.
It will always beat the talented person that's unsure.
The procrastinates that has one foot in and one foot out.
And if you don't believe in yourself, you're building a city on sand
because I'll tell you what, great things, they're great for a reason.
They're in rare supply.
They're limited, which means not everyone can have them.
Which means those who do have them have to fight for.
them, have to deal with being uncomfortable, have to give more, sacrifice more, pay a steeper price
than the masses. And if you don't look in the mirror, stare yourself in the face and know you are
one of those select few, what's going to happen when life kicks back at you? You'll fall. You'll resort
back to what you know. You'll flee the battle for safety, security, and comfort. But when you know,
your movie ends at the top of the mountain, when you know at the end of the day you're going to
cross a finish line or hold a trophy, your brain internalizes conflict differently, very
differently. For someone with self-belief, obstacles don't make you wonder if you should keep
going. Because you already know you have to keep going. I mean, come on, you haven't arrived yet.
There's still a road to travel. No, in this situation, obstacles simply prompt.
you to ask how.
How can I get through this?
And that's a small discrepancy that changes everything.
Because at some point you'll look to your right and you'll look to your left
and you'll find very few people get to the how question.
They all stop that if.
I wonder if I can do this.
I wonder if I'm capable.
Well, they'll never know.
They'll never see that sunset beyond those metaphorical city walls.
city walls because they never truly believed in themselves.
They never opened that gate.
Look, I went through 16 years of education
without a teacher or professor telling me,
Eddie, 99% of life is just believing in yourself
to figure challenges out as they come.
To figure life out as it comes.
That's it.
Only X% make it through law school.
Only Y% success.
Why percent succeed at this and that?
That's what you hear.
But no, none of that matters.
It's simple, it's simple, it's simple.
Most of the world quits when things get challenging.
If you don't, if you have the courage to believe
and trust in yourself, you'll succeed.
Why?
Because you won't stop until you find a way.
That's the power of self-belief.
It's not quantum physics, it's not complex.
You know, at one point,
I didn't think I could make a living outside of a cubicle or office building.
Then I saw others do it.
And for the first time in my life, I believed it was possible.
I changed my actions to support my beliefs.
And here we are.
At one point, I didn't think certain financial goals were reality.
I didn't know about a free, flexible lifestyle.
I wasn't aware of the type of relationships that would change my life.
Why?
Because they existed outside those city walls.
I didn't believe they were real.
I didn't believe in myself to create them, to make them in my own life.
But with the change in belief comes a change in reality.
You will always follow through on who you believe you are.
So let's go back to that mirror visualization.
At some point today, look at your reflection and think about nothing but what I'm about to tell you.
Everything you need, you have.
I promise you.
You are equipped to change your life, the lives of everyone around you, and the world in which you exist.
So take that back.
Feel it and never ask it again.
From now on, the question is how.
Your fate is not a coin flip, it's a puzzle.
It's about arranging the pieces.
And those two eyes looking back at you are more than capable of figuring.
that out. Ask simply do you want it? And if yes, open that front door, take that first step,
and inject yourself into a journey that will be unlike anything you've ever experienced before.
A journey where you have the answers, the aptitude, and now the self-belief. And when you
find yourself in the lowest of lows or the darkest of nights, find solace in that fact,
that that will be more than enough to get you to darn.
