Starting point is 00:00:00 Dear Keeper of Dreams, I know who you are. I know everything about you. You disguise yourself as perfection. You are the fear that does everything you can to hold me back, that begs me to be complacent. But I see through you. Keeper of dreams, you are the journey never started. Because when you look at the road ahead,
Starting point is 00:00:37 you see struggle, you see impossible. You don't see the opportunity or the reward, but I do. Keeper of dreams, you are the voice in the back of my head that constantly reminds me conformity would be easier, that forfeiting greatness would lift a tremendous burden off of my shoulders. But I live for that burden. Keeper of dreams, you are the odds. telling me that I am only one in a world of seven billion,
Starting point is 00:01:16 that someone else will achieve it, create it, make it happen. But if there must be one, it can and will be me. Keeper of dreams, you are the voice of supposed rationality, warning me that I'm wandering into an area I know nothing about that I should wait, that I'm not an expert, that I'm not good enough, But I have always believed that learning as you go is better than not going at all. One day, keeper of dreams, I will not know you. I will have left you behind.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Outrun your grasp. See, because what I'm trying to do doesn't leave me time for you. Greatness doesn't come from following the path made by the crowd. It comes from the relentless carving out of your own. Conformity gets you more of the same. It's an exchange of dreams for the ability to feel like everyone else in line at the grocery store. Keeper of dreams, I appreciate the beauty in life too much,
Starting point is 00:02:27 the pursuit of the things that will make every day better than the one before it. I will never give that up. I want what seems unnecessary, over the top, out of the ordinary, Keeper of Dreams, don't you get it? You will never win. I will give up my car, my clothes, every luxury in my life before I concede to you, before I give in to it as easy.
Starting point is 00:02:52 I may be in winter now, but spring is coming, summer is coming, and all I can think about is sitting on top of the world and being so thankful that I left you, because Keeper of Dreams, you can't keep mine. They are my oxygen. They are why I get up. why I get up in the morning, so while I thank you for reminding me of what it takes to win in this world smother with mediocrity and insecurity, I'm dismissing you to somewhere else,
Starting point is 00:03:22 anywhere but here, because keeper of dreams, my ride awaits. Exactly how long you were going to be alive, would things be different? Imagine if every morning you were able to look into an hourglass that showed you exactly how much time you have, removing any unknowns or uncertainty. Would you approach your days differently? Certainly time would feel more real. Every grain of sand that slipped by would remind us of our mortality of the days come and gone. But what about the sand that's left in the possibilities yet to be explored? In this fast-paced world we live in, it's very easy to be left. It's very easy, to get caught up, to go into autopilot, to do what everyone else is doing without ever taking
Starting point is 00:05:07 a second to examine ourselves. Every day, the sand in that hourglass gets lesser and lesser. And if you don't ask yourself what your purpose is, what makes you happy, what you're going to bring to the world, you know, someday you'll be all out of time. Our stay here is finite. You know, I'm I often talk to people about their goals and aspirations, what makes them happy. And I find it crazy how many restrictions people place on themselves. Human beings put a man on the moon. Think about that for a second. Yet it wouldn't be possible for you to record an album or start an interior design company.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Explain that to me. There is this fear of the unknown that's debilitating. We're all scared to fail, we're scared to mess with the status quo, even when we're not content with how things are. We'll write it out because unhappiness appears better than uncertainty. This in itself is a tragedy. I saw a great quote the other day. It said human beings are the only life form that will do less than they possibly can. There's never been a tree that didn't grow as tall as it possibly could.
Starting point is 00:06:42 They're hardwired to do that. Us, on the other hand, we have the gift of choice, which is a blessing, yes, but it's also a curse. It's something to hide behind. We'll forfeit the opportunity to be great, because that comes with the hefty price of risk. In reality, we don't know how many trips around the sun we have. It is and always will be a mysterious component of life, but regardless of your journey, what you've done what you've yet to do, there is no time for regret. So go after what you want. Work hard at something you love. Wake up excited. Go to bed content. Be a dreamer. Make
Starting point is 00:07:33 things happen. Being born was the hardest part. You've already done that. You've already won the lottery. You're here. You're experiencing everything the world has to offer. Statistically, that is a miracle. All you have to do is cash in on your lottery ticket. An interesting weekend. I was pretty sick and almost didn't run the half marathon that I had scheduled, but decided, hey, worst comes to worse, I have a bad race, the world will keep spinning. So I jumped in the car and headed that way. When all was said and done, I crossed the finish line, I ended up with the personal best of over 15 seconds a mile. In a race that I almost walked away from because I didn't think I would be at my best.
Starting point is 00:09:13 And when I regained composure settled in a little bit, I had to wonder how many times almost has gotten in my way. How many times a simple decision to stop to not go or wait for later has changed the outcome of my life. How many times has it changed the world? How many potential best sellers were almost started? How many potential growth? rates almost stuck with it. How many friendships almost remained intact? Think about how fickle
Starting point is 00:09:47 our world is, how these simple decisions to start, to go, to not drop the pen or hit the snooze button can change everything. And after that race, I told myself that I will never get in my own way again. I will never sell myself short. I will do everything in my power to be on the right side of almost. The worst outcome is so much better than wondering. You know, and there are moments that we question if it's worth it, if it matters, if there really will be payout. And being pragmatic, you know, maybe there will, maybe there won't.
Starting point is 00:10:26 But the moments that we remember in life, the things that end up meaning the most to us, they don't come from almost jumping. They're born from the recognition that failure, will not kill us. An opportunity hides behind mountains of almost. You can do what you've always done or you can go further. You can keep your stories and ideals locked away in your head or you can share them with the world.
Starting point is 00:10:56 You can worry about the collapse or you can build. Change the architecture of humanity, contribute something extraordinary, not be a victim of almost. but go in with the intent of leaving a mark, of holding your ground. You know, there are no certainties in life, that's for sure. But I can promise if you never leave, my friend, you will never arrive. And with so many potential destinations out there, who wants that?
Starting point is 00:11:27 Who wants to pay the cost of admission and not see the show? Be the person 30 years from now. talking, joking with your friends, family, and teammates about how you almost didn't go. You almost said no. You almost let your insecurity and doubt get the best of you. But then you took a step back and you remembered what matters.
