Starting point is 00:00:12 Sometimes it's not easy to see the finish line. To peer down that long, treacherous road ahead and feel completely confident that things will work out. You know, that success is waiting there for you in one form or another. Obviously, there's no road signs letting you know that your progress is paying off. There's no blatant indicator that you're on the right track. Essentially, there's nothing. Right?
Starting point is 00:00:41 nothing but the feet underneath you, taking you one step at a time to a fate that's completely unknown. And it's in this instance, while looking destiny in the eye, that you have to remember. Anyone can sail in smooth waters, anyone can dance when the music is playing. The great leveler, though, is how you live when it's not. When you're listening like your life depended on it, but there's no song to be heard. How do you push forward? No one else can get you there.
Starting point is 00:01:19 There's no shortcut to success. You'll find that the answer's in your chest. Because it's there, you'll find the melody that's been pumping through your veins since the first day you opened your eyes. Helping you create your own music, your own song, your own voice. It's what has the power to get you through to the next level. when your instinct tells you to quit, that maybe it's just not worth it.
Starting point is 00:01:47 When most give up, it's why you'll be able to hang on. Because the song will come. The skies will clear, the sun will rise. But you have to know that, and you have to know it now, when all you have is ambition and a plan, when it's just you, your song, and the road ahead. There's no concrete evidential triumph, but you don't need that. Persistence during times of doubt, during improbability,
Starting point is 00:02:27 that's what makes triumph so rare, so precious. It moves the strong-willed forward to bigger and better things. Things aren't handed to you, but they materialize over time. They transform from nothing to something. They emerge from hardship. Out of ideas that were perceived by others as crazy. as most achievements throughout the course of human history were let people talk about odds
Starting point is 00:02:54 how difficult success is they can't look inside of you they can't hear your song they don't know what you have but they will find out later when you've gotten past the mud the dirt the grind the stuff that no one wants to endure when you're singing your song to the world for yourself but also for
Starting point is 00:03:16 for them, for those who need it, those seeking their own song. One day you'll be able to tell them what it took, how it wasn't easy, but you knew that if you pushed hard enough, the stars would align. You heard the music before it played, and how sweet the sound. If these walls could talk, they would remind you of the things that you sometimes forget. Yeah, those elusive things you tend to walk. right by. It's not that you've chosen to ignore them, it's that well people are complex. And we have a tendency to skip over some important things as we remain fixated on our problems,
Starting point is 00:04:39 our perceived inadequacies, that finicky negativity bias. The one that states, if you went to a restaurant 100 times, had 99 incredible experiences, but something went wrong on the hundredth. Well, that restaurant would forever be known to you as the place where things go wrong. We are wired not to see the good, but to identify and avoid the bad. And if these walls could talk, they would unveil to you the brilliance that exists. slightly out of frame. They would suggest you look over your shoulder and take a peek at how far you've come
Starting point is 00:05:28 because my friend, you've come a long, long way. It's funny how slow progress moves. It's interesting how our lowest moments force us outside of ourselves. Push us to step into those shoes we didn't know we're sitting in the closet, unworn, waiting for the day we'd take on that new role, waiting on you to see that who you were yesterday is not correlated to who you can be today. And if these walls could talk, they'd fill you in on a very important statistic.
Starting point is 00:06:18 They'd tell you that you've stood face to face with some of the biggest curveballs life can throw. You took on struggle and hardship that rocked you to your core and as you stand here now, your success rate through all that comes in at well 100%. You are literally undefeated in your ability to move through adversity and every time you did, whether you knew it or not, you walked into that closet and put on a new pair of shoes. you became something new. Sometimes progress is so slow that it feels like pain and it looks like stagnation, but it is anything but.
Starting point is 00:07:12 And if these walls could talk, they would remind you of that truth. They would beg you to see what you've become, who you are. If these walls could talk, they would remind you of life's ever-changing, transformative nature. All the times they witnessed you upset about people and things coming and going as you tried to hold on to that which perhaps no longer served you, wishing you could make permanent those things that were just meant to be transitory, shooting stars across the sky of your life. But something doesn't need to be forever to be meaningful.
Starting point is 00:08:00 And thank God, because nothing is forever. And as we make our way into that vast unknown, we have a choice. We can live in the shadow of a particular moment in time, or we can cherish the value that those moments offered to us. They gave you just enough to take a new step forward, and sometimes a new step in that direction that's calling you is the difference between nothing and everything. So if these walls could talk,
Starting point is 00:08:35 they would tell you to keep your head up and be thankful for those shooting stars in your life for they made you who you are. And the path forward would be impossible without them. If these walls could talk, they would ask you about those times you came home, sat down in your room, and wondered how you could ever be enough.
Starting point is 00:09:01 They'd call attention to that seemingly non-stop battle with imposter syndrome. They'd ask when you will feel like you've learned, seen, or traveled enough to gain some semblance of authority in your own life. They'd wonder when you'll give yourself permission to be that. You've come so far, endured so much, you're not the same person you were a year ago. Now, if you could just stretch a little further, if you could just exercise a little further, if you could just accept, extend a little higher. If you could see all the new shoes you've worn
Starting point is 00:09:43 and the shooting stars you've collected along the way, you would know that you are designed to overcome. External pressures, obligations, criticism, none of it matters. This is between you and yourself. And if these walls could talk, they would ask you when you'll see what they see. The brilliance, the magnitude of your potential.
Starting point is 00:10:12 When will you be you? Marcus Aurelius wrote, Remember how long you've been putting this off. How many extensions the gods gave you and you didn't use them. There is a limit to the time assigned to you. And if you don't use it to free yourself, it will be gone and never return. See, today is press.
Starting point is 00:10:36 because it is the only one you get. Each second unique in its own way, a measurement of opportunity represented by a single tick from the watch you're wearing. And if these walls could talk, they would tell you that they've seen people come and go, that you aren't the first and you most definitely won't be the last. And every single soul that stepped inside
Starting point is 00:11:02 wish they'd found that courage a little sooner. wish they'd looked back a little earlier, wish they'd found the inspiration amidst the chaos and turbulence of their day-to-day lives. And if these walls could talk, they'd hope that maybe this would be it for you, the next step in your evolution. And what's most incredible is that you get there not by becoming something you've not yet become. No, in this moment, it's about, noticing who you already are instead of the one mistake or reason to shrink
Starting point is 00:11:43 into yourself how about shining a light on those 99 reasons to expand when it hurts know that it's hurt worse and you've persevered when you experience loss know that it's not about what's gone but what you now have and will keep with you forever and most importantly know that you can always step into a new pair of shoes. You can always reinvent, recreate. You are never defined by something that happened in the past. The wake of the boat does not drive the boat.
Starting point is 00:12:24 And so with this in mind, chart your course to new horizons. Understand that the map you need has nothing to do with externalities, but rather the solutions that already exist within you. So take a second and peer back over your shoulder. Look at that you in the past standing at the bank of a river, hoping, praying for help, a lift, for some technology to get you across, knowing as you stand here now that you have traversed oceans.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Look, the context changes, and yes, it will always change, but your ability to endure, it does only one thing it multiplies. You have everything you need because you couldn't have gotten to this point without accumulating the knowledge and expertise to take one step forward and miracles. They are merely the culmination of those courageous steps. And yes, when we are stuck, When we're at that coastline looking out at foreign horizons, I get that the answers seem big, sometimes even bigger than we are.
Starting point is 00:13:46 I get that the mind wanders right to the potential disasters, to the what-ifs and the worst case. But if these walls could talk, they would let you know that you've come this far, endured and accomplished all this. Not because you've left mountains or jumped ocean, but because when you were at your worst, you found it within yourself to carry on the exponential compounding of what has made you great and what will continue to make you great.
Starting point is 00:14:20 Look at these walls to talk, they'd show you how the difficulties of years past have become stepping strong. So commonplace, so easily solvable, that they no longer even war, your attention that by moving forward you have faced your obstacles, taken the value from them and made them obsolete. If these walls could talk, they'd remind you that you are not only ready but made for everything
Starting point is 00:14:50 that awaits. There's a quote from Henry David Thoreau that I've learned to love over the years. He says, we are constantly invited to be who we are. Essentially, there is always a hand, you know, reaching out to invite us, to leave the confinement we've allowed to become our lives, the pressure of the outside world, and attack a world that means the most to us, not obligatory, but for the opportunity. Because it's there, it's perpetually available, and that's what Henry David Thoreau means. And what's interesting is the second we lose sight of this,
Starting point is 00:15:56 Our lives become consumed with things that really have no relevance to our goals or our objectives. In fact, the daily routine becomes the goal. It's the box that needs to be checked to feel accomplished. We do things because, well, isn't that what you're supposed to do? Adher to rules and processes and guidelines, almost like we forget why that routine matters. Like we forget the car has to go somewhere of relevance. You don't just get in and drive it to drive it. That doesn't make sense.
Starting point is 00:16:26 And a friend of mine recently showed me this book of insights from different photographers. It's called The Photographers Playbook, and it's life lessons that helped each one of them along the way. And one that stood out to me specifically was Andrea Parleto. And she talked about a concept called hibernation, or cutting off, temporarily leaving your day-to-day
Starting point is 00:16:47 or your craft, so that all the have-toes and should-bees can dissipate. And you can ask yourself the question that we so quickly lose. question that should be the target, that should be the foundation we build upon. Who do you want to be? Because when all is said and done, and you're looking back, that's what will matter. That's what will dictate your happiness.
Starting point is 00:17:15 Not that you were five for five on your checklist every day on your 20s, 30s, 40s, and on, right? No, what does it look like when you peel that back? What does it look like under the surface? is what makes you, you. And sometimes we have to step back, go away, leave the day-to-day world we've created to see life from a different angle. Eliminate the steps, the requirements,
Starting point is 00:17:41 the technicalities, and what are you left with? When you put your head on the pillow at night, what makes you smile? Brony Ware states in her book, Regrets of the dying that not living a life true to oneself was one of the greatest regrets people experienced. Isn't it worthy of your time, your attention? Don't you owe it to yourself to make sure that your vision is defined
Starting point is 00:18:07 and your actions support that? See, anyone can move just to move and anyone can breathe just to breathe. With the ones who make the most of each step, each breath, they put themselves in position to live life differently, to accept the invitation to be, who they truly are to take their inspiration, their gifts, and their dreams, and never look back. There's a quote from George Elliott that states it's never too late to be what you might have been.
Starting point is 00:19:06 And see, that ability to separate the stories of yesterday from the stories of right now will always be what determine your tomorrow. I'm still searching for the best way to really articulate this message, to emphasize just how precious this moment right now could be. If only we decided to make it so, if only we recognize the power in choosing to begin again. Now, I understand the power of habits, how they define us, and how, practically speaking, change isn't as aeer. easy as saying you're going to be something and then just becoming that thing. No, you have to build habits, your actions. They become your life and there are plenty of resources on habit building. James Clear being one of my favorites and someone I point too often. One of his best quotes,
Starting point is 00:20:10 he says, the task of building a good habit is like cultivating a delicate flower one day at a time, meaning little actions over time create big results. But before any of that, before any steps, before any habits, before any action, we have to know that once a page is turned, it's gone. It becomes data to guide your next decision, and that's all. It's understanding that yesterday is not you. Only a resource for you to look back on as you reflect on what worked and what didn't. What you loved and what you didn't love, where you went and why it mattered. But you're not yesterday's losses or mistakes or tragedies. Just like today's weather is ultimately independent from yesterday's. Sure, they may follow the same patterns, same rules, same guidelines.
Starting point is 00:21:20 And that's great. That's how we get the data that allows us to look back and calculate what's best for us. But ultimately today is a new day. A day with the potential, the capability of becoming something extraordinarily beautiful. And we may think, okay, I get it. Sure, I can become something new. All right, let's go. The question is, do you really believe it? Do you really understand? how malleable you are, how you can bend, and fold, and shape yourself into something new. Because the second you get that quick blast of motivation, right, that tiny bit of courage and dip your toe in the water, what happens? Life says, not so fast.
Starting point is 00:22:21 Your mind presses play on a giant projector, showing the film of who you used to be. Not who you want to be. Social media displays a seemingly perfect collage of everyone around you pretending to live problem-free lives and prompting you to think, oh, this must mean I'm doing something wrong. TV, news, media, politicians tell you that life is too hard. You're too oppressed to find your way out of this. Of course, not without their help. So why try one might think?
Starting point is 00:23:07 Friends may disappear or worse. Criticize the fact that you've changed as if that wasn't the point of life in its entirety. In my message is this. Yes, change comes from habits. And yes, habits are small, daily decisions, but also creating that mental space to welcome in those new habits, to understand you're worthy of more, to understand right now is a beginning. That is both the greatest challenge and greatest accomplishment. Giving yourself permission amidst an endless array of adversaries, that's what makes or breaks you.
Starting point is 00:23:59 Not how close you keep your running shoes to the door so that you see them and it triggers those AM workouts. sessions, no, that stuff's important, but does it matter if you don't see yourself? As someone who's going to use those shoes as a tool to change into something new, to put them on when you don't want to, when you feel tired, when you're busy, who are you going to choose to be? And can you hold on to that idea? See, I obviously enjoy motivation, right? I consume a video or an audio almost every morning.
Starting point is 00:24:38 I feel like it gets me in the right headspace, and then I get on with my work, right? And for the most part, it does a great job of communicating to us what we need for that moment. It's like believe in yourself. Work hard. Don't you dare give up. Amen.
Starting point is 00:24:56 But where it sometimes drops the ball, in my opinion, is the why, why believe in myself? Why work hard? Why not give up? And the answer, is because we are these incredibly gifted beings with the ability to change and adapt and grow, but are confronted with the world that wants to tell you no. Change is immediately met with resistance, as if it prefers life at rest.
Starting point is 00:25:34 It begs for stagnation. And you even thinking that you can rearrange the order of things, things shakes life at its foundation. And when we feel that, there's a default uncertainty, a mini panic. How can something be right when it just feels like every move forward is a right hook to the face? Like we're constantly pushing into the headwind. I'll never forget. It was almost two years into my journey as a speech writer, a YouTuber, a content creator, right? Two years since I left my job. And I felt guilty taking an afternoon jog. It felt like a luxury I wasn't entitled to. Something that minimal, it took time for me to stop thinking about that and enjoy it.
Starting point is 00:26:28 That's how crazy it was. Something so tiny and insignificant. Now imagine the weight of the big things. With change, the hard thing is the right thing. That's a tough. That's a tough. idea to put our hands around, to hold, to embrace. What we least want to do is so often what we need. But as Campbell says, the cave we fear holds the treasure we seek. As Peterson says, the dragon protects the gold. Jim Rhone, the winters of life give way to the springs and the summers. Nietzsche said there's no beautiful surface without a terrible depth to become who we might be hurts. And I'm not sure why it has to be this way, perhaps a test to weed out those who don't really want it. Or maybe it's what we learn when we leave the pieces of ourselves we no longer want behind.
Starting point is 00:27:31 Or maybe it's because without that fight, without that suffering, evolution just wouldn't mean as much. But the climb, it creates the view. Regardless the reason, I hope the point comes through when it comes through loud and clear. And not just now as your alarm clock goes off and you're looking for that extra push to get up, but tomorrow, in the morning after that, when things become a little bit harder and the finish line feels a little less real, a little less visible, the person you hope to become is as real as the present moment. It's as real when you're excited and motivated as it is when you're discouraged and down. But look around you and understand that as counterintuitive, as crazy, as frustrating as it might be,
Starting point is 00:28:24 the discomfort and uncertainty does not mean you are lost or you've wandered too far. It means you're right where you need to be. It's the little price to be paid every day for monumental change. So as you look out your front door, know that more does exist. Know that it will demand more of you than you've ever given and know that you are capable of not only meeting but exceeding those demands and that it will be the most rewarding, incredible, meaningful journey of your life.
