Your World Within Podcast by Eddie Pinero - Spending Your 3%

Episode Date: August 5, 2020

30 minutes of a 16 hour day (assuming you sleep for 8) is roughly 3% of your day.  Imagine if, every day, you took that 3% and allocated it towards something you want to improve upon.  Perhaps somet...hing you've been putting off, maybe something you don't even particularly enjoy doing, but you know that daily completion of this task would position you for long term success.  How would you spend that 3%?

Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to Your World Within Daily. I'm Eddie Panero. And in this episode, I want to talk about a particular way of categorizing our time, right? Utilizing the 24 hours that we have in a way that takes a very small amount of that time. Two or three percent of your day and can ultimately hold you accountable and put you in position for long-term success. So 30 minutes is nothing, right? 30 minutes a day really doesn't feel like a lot. 30 minutes every day for five years is a game changer.
Starting point is 00:00:49 It can be the difference between mediocrity and greatness. I mean, time compiled like that is an incredibly powerful thing. And so when you look at a day, 24 hours, it's all we have, we all have, we all have the same amount of time, and you take that half hour and you set it aside, that is about 2% of, you. our 24 hour day. If you take into account how much we sleep, let's say eight hours, right, which gives us 16 hours. That half hour block out of the 16 hours is roughly 3%. Right. So we're talking two or three percent, this 30 minute block of time, which is essentially negligible. And that's why this is so important. That's why this is so powerful. Because anyone can take
Starting point is 00:01:36 3% of their day and do something they don't want to do, but they have to do. 3% is nothing. But over time, it's everything. And so what I was trying to do is find a way to take these things that when we get busy, right, when life gets kind of chaotic in a good way or a bad way, right? I have a lot of things going on right now with your world within. It's a little crazy. And so what I'm finding is the things I'm kind of dipping my toe in the water on,
Starting point is 00:02:02 the things that maybe building habits, not sustained yet or there are things that the validation is not there quite yet. We've all been there. When things are crazy, we let go of those in order to do what we have to do. Our priorities obviously take control. So the question is, how do you take those little things that you know you need to do and make them a priority, right? It'd be very easy to brush them off and go, and tomorrow, how do you make it tangible?
Starting point is 00:02:36 do you make it a must do? And so for me, for example, I'm a runner. I'm sure you guys know that. I talk about it nonstop. It's just my thing. I learn a lot from it and I enjoy it. And so when I have you know, my X amount of time to work out, I grab my shoes and I run because it's in my comfort zone. It's easy. It's therapeutic. And I just go do my thing. But you're not going to get stronger running. And I've been wanting for a while to diversify what I'm doing, right, for obvious reasons. You can't just run. That's pretty one-dimensional. But every time I'm busy and I know I wanted to work out, my thought process goes,
Starting point is 00:03:14 well, you ran this morning or you ran yesterday. You did some physical activity. You increased your heart rate. You're doing good. So, you know, you can push the weight lifting aside or the body circuit or the yoga or whatever it is. And so the question I started asking myself was, you know, this is going to go on forever unless you make it a thing.
Starting point is 00:03:36 So how do you do that? And the way I've compartmentalized it is you have a two or three percent chip, a coin, something that must be spent every day, that half hour. And when you wake up in the morning, right, usually I can be pretty consistent with it, but there's some days where I can't and I have to change the time. And it's looking at my day and saying, when are you spending that two or three percent? When are you spending that chip, that token throughout the day because you're getting the workout in? And that way, it's not like the thought process isn't, yeah, you were busy, but you ran, so you got half a workout in. It's, nope, you did not spend that token, that two or three percent today like you said
Starting point is 00:04:22 you would. You failed in that department. Seems extreme, but it's the only way to make it tangible. Otherwise, it's not a loss. Like, you have to create a way to make this a win-loss thing, a check-or-not-check thing, because it won't be important otherwise. And what I've noticed over the past like eight, nine days is I've done it because I don't want to take the L there.
Starting point is 00:04:45 I don't want to, you know, lose to the metaphorical two or three percent token. So I'm spending it and I'm getting it in there whenever I can. And I'm like, this is valuable. There's something to this, right? Obviously, you can't really do this with everything in your life. But if there's that one thing that you know you need to do that you keep pushing off or is getting drowned in your day to day, maybe this is a concept that will help people. You know, you're two or three percent. What are you spending it on? How are you going to exhaust that time so that it pushes you forward? Because over time, man, if you can really stay consistent about that, life is about tricking yourself into doing certain things.
Starting point is 00:05:31 I mean, James clears atomic habits. The whole book is about habit building. And it's tricking your mind into doing things that you know you need to do, but you're not yet disciplined enough to do them, right? You're building the habits. You're building the discipline. And you're building it into part of your life. Well, this is the same thing.
Starting point is 00:05:51 I just, things are not going to get less busy. You're going to get more busy. And I can't see a world where I start putting things off for, for, you know, items that aren't, I don't know. In other words, you have to make them real.
Starting point is 00:06:08 And that's what this does. And I'd be curious for any of you guys watching or listening to give it a shot. And let me know what you think. Let me know if it helped you. How are you spending your two or three percent that token to, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:21 to make yourself a little bit better than you were yesterday. And, man, a year goes by quick. I spent three years in Florida. went by like snap of a finger. I can't even believe it. Right. And you just think,
Starting point is 00:06:37 if you do that one thing, whatever it was for a half hour, every day for three years, I wouldn't have even seen the time go by. So you have to be really cognizant about tricking yourself into doing that thing. And maybe it's not strength training for everyone, but I'm sure there's something.
Starting point is 00:06:52 And hey, another step in the right direction, right? That's what we're all about. So let me know. I can't wait to hear from you guys. And if you appreciate this podcast, usual, my spiel, my request. Particularly if you have Apple or an iPhone, if you can rate, subscribe and review, it helps me get this out to the world.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Apple kind of pushes and prioritizes those podcasts that get a lot of action and engagement there. So that would be huge for me. Grateful. And I will catch you guys tomorrow.
