Starting point is 00:00:00 Quite some time has gone by since the last letter I wrote to my younger self, a few years actually. And I think we're due, because older me continues to learn to both enjoy and be humbled by life. To experience helloes and endure goodbyes. To win and to lose, to acquire, and to cut away. the world is a maze of complexity to navigate. And maybe we should start right there. Because look, kid, there are some fundamental ideas about life that you just have wrong. There is no door that you walk through where you suddenly go from not understanding
Starting point is 00:00:50 to finally having all the answers. Part of growing up is realizing how little human beings know about anything and that's okay what you'll understand is it's not a reason to run it's a source of courage to draw from oh but adults are wise you might think
Starting point is 00:01:12 no adults are just children with mortgages you'll learn that and as we all become renters even that's changing oh but him over there or her, wait, them, they have it all figured out. No, they just walk with conviction into their individual unknowns. That's all. Oh, but there has to be some certainty.
Starting point is 00:01:35 We have to know some things for sure, you might think. Well, certainly we do, or at least we think we do, but you have to understand, 150 years ago, science said bleeding someone out would cure them of their illness. right our pursuit of truth is crucial but it's a work in progress life is a work in progress you are a work in progress so what am i talking about why does this matter because i don't want you to think that you are ill prepared to venture further into your potential i don't want you to think that other people have what you don't that you're not enough the work
Starting point is 00:02:21 The world around you is chaos, it's a mess, it's clay. Some people use it to build and create and shape the reality, and others, well, others don't. The kicker here is that nothing is built if you don't first give yourself permission to take the unknowns and make something with them. Once you understand that there is no secret code be figured out, you free yourself to explore and capture the essence of being alive.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Again, life is messy. So go flail around, wander, go get lost, who cares? You see what I'm saying? You can watch from afar, succumbing to the illusion that the world is some meticulously constructed orchestra where everything's playing in unison? or you can dive in and make your own music, dance to your own melodies, because there is no perfect. There are people who stand still and people who pick up the pieces as they go. Next, and very closely related, younger me, give yourself a chance.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Try things. No, more things, bigger things, terrifying things. You see those posters of people you have hung up on your wall? They're not of a different world. They're people like you. But they decided along the way that they would try, that they would step out a line, break some rules, push life, and see how hard life pushed back. Younger me on my college essay,
Starting point is 00:04:31 I referenced one of my favorite quotes. I attributed it to Mark Twain. Turns out it wasn't even by him, but life goes on, right? It said, 20 years from now, you'll be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than the ones you did do. So throw off the bow line. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sales. Explore, dream, discover.
Starting point is 00:04:59 It's a beautiful quote. And here's what I gather from it. The biggest mistakes I've made over the course of my lifetime ended up being my greatest teachers, leading me to something new, to where I most needed to be. I mean, a lot of my mistakes are even funny stories, right, that I joke about with buddies over a beer.
Starting point is 00:05:22 The vast majority of things you're worried about, they either won't happen or they're reversible. But what gets you, younger me, truly hurts is wishing you have the courage to apply to that thing that you instead let the deadline slip away or talk to that person you walked right by or audition or train or travel or follow your intuition your heart to someplace new those are the things we tend to carry around the second you learn that not going is far scarier than stepping out into the unknown you'll possess a perspective that's incredibly valuable.
Starting point is 00:06:04 It will change your life. And lastly, this one's kind of hard to articulate, but let me tell you, it continues to resurface. Here it is. If your intuition is telling you something, listen. Trust it. If something feels wrong, let it go. If it feels like it's where you need to be,
Starting point is 00:06:29 you're being pulled in that direction, explore, move towards it. When you know in 30 seconds that someone isn't a good person, don't give them your time. When something doesn't align with your goals or objectives, don't feel bad walking away. When something excites you, trust that feeling. This is all intuition, and I've come to find that initial response to be more and more valuable. What that feeling is telling you matters. Don't turn your back on that. Now, of course, there's a line we have to walk, or an element of pragmatism we have to hold on to.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Sometimes, when we're particularly upset, it makes sense to let the emotions subside and allow rationality to enter. But this is more about being aware of who you are and what you want, right? Don't talk yourself out of what you know you want and into what you know you don't. Life gives clues. It's not always 4D chess. Sometimes it can be simple. What's needed is right there. But you have to look around.
Starting point is 00:07:43 You have to listen and trust yourself, and no one will ever know you better than you. But if you tune yourself out, then how can you have a shot at living a meaningful life? One on your own terms. be impossible. So younger me, trust yourself. Beyond what anyone else tells you is best,
Starting point is 00:08:06 are most beneficial. Again, those are answers only you know. So listen to you. One of my favorite messages is that you are your own experiment. That as we move forward into the haze of the unknown, we understand that at times we'll fall. At times we'll see our plans disintegrate right in front of us. But this is, when we step back and really examine,
Starting point is 00:08:42 not a cause for alarm, but a chance to celebrate. Celebrate because the world's pushing back at you implies that you are moving forward. And that is strength. As the saying goes in the broken places, the light shines through. Younger me, promise me you won't be scared of breaking. That you won't fear leaving the harbor.
Starting point is 00:09:13 Because nothing out there is bigger than you, or too much for you to handle or navigate. The funny thing is, younger me, that your journey is reliant on you giving yourself permission to go, to see, to explore. All that starts with you green lighting your own adventure. But remember what I'm telling you. There is no rubric for life, it's trial and error.
Starting point is 00:09:43 Remember that if you don't give yourself a chance, you simply watch the opportunity slip by, and remember that you are the only one who knows what's best for you. So trust that intuition. The world will be whatever you, you choose to make it. And my hope is that you realize you are strong enough.
Starting point is 00:10:09 You're bold enough. You're capable enough to make it whatever that might be. So younger me, go pave your path. Go blaze your trail. And remember along the way, as you navigate the ups and downs, highs and lows, Remember to look up and enjoy the ride. One day we will all breathe for the last time. And that breath will feel just like this one.
Starting point is 00:10:57 Same sunrise. Same quiet hum of the world. Same beating heart that doesn't realize it's on its final lap. And the truth is, that person will be you, it will be me, will be all of us. See, life doesn't send warnings. It doesn't tap you on the shoulder before it leaves. It just stops.
Starting point is 00:11:25 And when I finally understood that, something in me shifted, I stopped waiting to be ready. I stopped assuming I had time because I realized every second we live is borrowed. Every breath is on loan. And the debt we owe is to life itself. If time is borrowed, then I will spend it well.
Starting point is 00:11:53 Oh, how I used to think I was invincible. That tomorrow was some kind of safety net I could always fall into. But later is the most dangerous word we speak. It quietly turns dreams into dust. We've seen later become never. And before you know what, the chance is gone. It's evaporated. I think about all the people who didn't wake up to.
Starting point is 00:12:21 people with calendars full of plans. Messages left unsent, goals halfway written. They had stories that stopped mid-sentence, and somehow, me. I got another page. You got another page. That's not luck. That is borrowed time. And if time is borrowed, then it must be spent well.
Starting point is 00:12:47 See, that changes how you move through the world. You stop pretending you're in control. You stop rehearsing life and you start living it. There's an ethos attributed to Native American warriors. It says simply today is a good day to die. Not because they were reckless, but because they refused to hold back. Refused to leave a story half written. What if we lived like that?
Starting point is 00:13:15 What if we stopped tiptoeing around our dreams like we'll get another round? If time is borrowed, shouldn't we spend it well? I've lost people I love, I'm sure you have as well, and every time it's like life hands me a mirror, a reflection of how fragile this all really is. Their absence makes every sunrise sharper, every conversation more real. It reminds me that this world doesn't owe me another day.
Starting point is 00:13:47 It's a gift that keeps me. showing up whether I deserve it or not and if it's borrowed I don't want to give it back untouched I want fingerprints all over it laughter tears mistakes art love all of it sometimes I catch myself looking up at the night sky stars that burned out millions of years ago still shining like they're alive today and I think maybe that's what we're meant to do here to shine long after we're gone. Leave something behind that outlives the ticking clock.
Starting point is 00:14:26 If time is borrowed, then we must spend it well. Because one day, the lender will call, the breath will slow, the curtain will close, and all that will remain is how you spent what you were given. Did you love deeply? Did you stand for something? Did you chase what scared you? Did you live? Because no one remembers how long you live, but they certainly remember how alive you were while you did.
Starting point is 00:14:58 So maybe it's time to stop waiting, to stop scrolling past your own life, to stop making excuses for not becoming that person you were meant to be. The clock is ticking. The loan is running out. And that's not meant to scare you, it is meant to free you. To unshackle you from your fears and your hesitation, your what-ifs. The lottery ticket is on your person. It's in your pocket. You've won.
Starting point is 00:15:34 This is your reminder that you don't own time, you borrow it. You spend it while you're here. And my friends, if time is borrowed that it must be spent well. with courage, gratitude, with everything you have. One day that world will spin on without you. And maybe that's okay. Because what mattered most isn't how long the story lasted. It's that you told it with your whole heart.
Starting point is 00:16:04 So take your borrowed time and make it unforgettable. If time is borrowed, then it must be spent. I talk a lot about taking care of the things. that carry us through life. Our minds, our bodies, our health. They've gotten a little older. I think like so many of us, I've realized that longevity also belongs in that bucket.
Starting point is 00:16:40 That's why I'm so excited to announce today's sponsor, OneSkin. It's founded by four PhD longevity scientists who study aging at the cellular level. They have a proprietary peptide called OS1 that focuses on working with your skin to attack aging at the cellular level. Like I said, I've been using it for a few months, very happy with it.
Starting point is 00:17:02 But like, it's the philosophy too, right? It's being proactive. It's taking care of your body and your health and your longevity instead of waiting till, you know, the wheels fall off the metaphorical wagon to do something about it. So I'm not alone in my ranting and raving. There's, I think, over 10,000 five-star reviews for OneSkin online. And right now, if you go to OneSkin.com slash Eddie, and you use code Eddie, that's EDD-I-E at checkout, you get 15% off on your purchase.
Starting point is 00:17:35 Again, that's oneskin.co slash eddy. You use code eddy at checkout. You get 15% off on your purchase. So thanks to OneSkin for sponsoring this video, and thank you for being a part of the process. That version of you isn't gone. It needs to be reclaimed. I remember sitting in my car one night. engine off, hands on the wheel,
Starting point is 00:18:04 long after I'd parked, no phone or music, just silence. And I caught myself doing something I hadn't done in a while. I was sort of replaying a version of my life that didn't exist anymore. A version where things felt lighter. Where I woke up every day with energy, where everything felt possible. You know the feeling. where you don't even realize you're in a good chapter until it's gone.
Starting point is 00:18:33 And now you're sitting there looking at the pieces, trying to remember what it felt like, trying to trace your way back. I sat there thinking, man, what happened to that version of me? Not necessarily the achievements or the results, but the feeling, the spark. And here's the dangerous part. When you sit in that long enough, it starts to feel like something you lost.
Starting point is 00:19:02 Like it belongs to the past. It's behind you. And I think that's where most people fall flat. That's where it ends. They turn their best memories into museums, visit them every once in a while, admire them from time to time. But they never think to rebuild them. That night, though, something shifted because I realized that version of me,
Starting point is 00:19:29 the one I missed so much, he wasn't living in a better time. He was living in a better state. He moved differently, thought differently, he chose differently. He woke up and attacked the day, didn't wait to feel inspired, he created momentum. He didn't wait for light, he became it. And the truth hit me hard. Nothing I missed was actually gone. I'd just stopped being that person who created it.
Starting point is 00:20:07 See, we romanticized the past like it was magic, like something special was how. happening to us. The reality is we were the ones making it special. We were the ones showing up differently. We were the ones creating momentum and creating energy, creating life. So if you've been sitting there like I was thinking about how things used to be, let me remind you of something. You don't need to go back.
Starting point is 00:20:38 You need to reclaim. Because the spark you're chasing, it's not behind you. It's within you. In fact, some might say it is an entire world within you. See, you can wake up tomorrow and decide to move like that person again. You can choose discipline over comfort, action over hesitation, creation, over consumption. You can stop waiting for the perfect feeling and start building it. One intentional decision at a time.
Starting point is 00:21:17 Because your best moments weren't actually. accidents. They were the result of how you showed up and that means you can do it again. This isn't about nostalgia. It's about responsibility. It's about understanding that the light you're missing was never something you found. It was something you built. It began internally and was projected out. And look, if you built it once, you can build it again. Stronger even. Wiser. more intentional. So stop daydreaming about who you used to be or how good things once were
Starting point is 00:21:59 or a feeling that lives in the distant past and start becoming the person who creates that feeling again. You don't have to chase the past, you just have to step back into the fire and remind yourself exactly who you are. Remember, life will only give you what you ask for. Nothing more and nothing less.
Starting point is 00:22:38 So don't be shy about looking up and asking for a lot. I'm going to go back to the basics here. Because when you miss the basics, you find yourself most off course. I'll swear by this. It's not the complexities or the details that derail us and leave us navigating the wilderness, hopelessly looking for answers.
Starting point is 00:23:05 It's the foundational things. It's missing the pillars. So that said, I'm going to share a little anecdote. Not because, and this is important, this anecdote in and of itself, is super meaningful or profound. In fact, you'll probably find it quite trivial, and I hope you do because it is.
Starting point is 00:23:30 But it's what it represents. It's the symbolism behind it. So as I'm walking you through this, all I ask is that you're thinking about your own life in the places where this could apply. Okay, so the other day, I got invited to an event up in Vancouver. And I'll share more about that soon. It was a great experience.
Starting point is 00:23:52 I'm going to drip it, right? Can't give it all in one take. But regardless, I got invited to this trip and I booked my flight from Phoenix to Vancouver. Quick notice, quick turnaround. So I went to find a flight online, and of course, Everything's a bit overpriced and a little outrageous, and you kind of expect that, right? I'm scrolling, looking at the options, find one, select it, and I'm like, no, I'm not going to pay over $100 to choose my seat.
Starting point is 00:24:27 That's outrageous. I'm going to roll the dice. And as you'd guess, that means I landed in a middle seat. Not ideal, but again, first world problems. I'll be fine. And I'm at the gate about 20 minutes before boarding. I remember it perfectly leaning against this pillar with my backpack, watching something or texting on my phone. And it dawns on me.
Starting point is 00:24:50 Like I look up at the gate and I think, well, why don't I walk up there and see if there's an aisle or window? It's like worse they can say is no. You approach it with humility, but at least ask. So I walk up. Guys at the counter. Hi, how can I help you? And I basically say, hey, is out of left field, wondering, you know, I got randomly put in a middle seat.
Starting point is 00:25:15 Is there any aisle or window available you can move me to? Guy's kind of expressionless. He asked me for my ID. It doesn't say anything. A few seconds go by. Hands me my ID back with a printed out ticket. It says, here you go. Moved it to 13A.
Starting point is 00:25:30 Enjoy. Just like that. That's like, sweet. I didn't even have to do anything. Better outcome. And the only job I did, only work I did was realizing that I could have that. You know, and I told you it was a small thing, but man, if that doesn't make you ask, how many times in my life have I just accepted a current situation or outcome as, you know, final,
Starting point is 00:25:56 when I could have just pushed back against it? It's not even that we get nervous and don't ask. It's that we don't think to. It doesn't even dawn on us. We forget how much control we have. Like, translate that into everyday life. And it looks a lot like you'll never get that promotion if you don't stop and think, you know what?
Starting point is 00:26:28 Like, this role has been great, but I can be a leader or a manager or whatever stepping up looks like. I can start working towards more responsibility and the rewards and perks that. come with it. You'll never date your dream person if you don't think, hey, who is this ideal person? And why don't I level up to become the type of person who attracts them? You'll never change your physique if you don't look in the mirror and say, you know what, man? I've been accepting this for years as quote unquote the way I am. But I don't have to. And you know what? I can do something daily to step into that new pair of shoes. Now, all of these are admittedly more nuanced and complex than changing a seat on a plane.
Starting point is 00:27:23 Yes. But the funny thing is, it's like the fundamental idea is the same. You realize that what is is not a permanent state. It's not a condition assigned to you. It's the product of your own actions. Right? That's part one, realizing that. And then the second part, of course, is doing something about it.
Starting point is 00:27:46 It's walking up to that metaphorical customer service desk and seeking change, doing what is required. And that second part is what I mean when I say the universe will never give you what you don't ask for. As a friend of mine has said, and I've referenced this before, you can't outsource your push-ups. You have to do them. It's like, same deal. You have to identify your mountaintop and then climb towards it.
Starting point is 00:28:14 but you never get the view if you don't, one, identify the mountain top, and two, climb. I know we're all guilty of this. I know we're all guilty of saying, oh, well, I guess I live at the base of the mountain. That's my reality, when it doesn't have to be. Too often we settle for less than ideal because we don't even imagine something better, right? And it's so fun, it's invigorating, it's freeing when that. light bulb goes off. It's like, oh my God, I can change this, I can stop X, I can go do Y. I built a little cage around myself here, here, and here, and I can unlock them and simply walk out.
Starting point is 00:29:02 And one by one, you free yourself from those self-made walls, or cages or bars. Let me remind you all, you control how you spend your day. You might not think you do, but you do. And you control who you share time with, and you might not think you do, but you do. You control how you show up. You might not think you do, but you do. This is, one, finding the courage to ask more of the world, and two, finding the strength to step out your front door and take it. Start conditioning your mind to ask that question.
Starting point is 00:29:43 Are things this way because it's ideal and it aligns with what matters to me, or are things this way simply because I've allowed it. You get in life what you tolerate. And on that drive-through life, you can ride shotgun and end up where you end up, or you can take the wheel. You can hold your hands out and accept what is given to you, or you can use them to build a world that is entirely your own. It goes quickly.
Starting point is 00:30:16 So why not start recognizing and unlocking all those little cages we've made ourselves comfortable in. Instead of settling for anything, why not ask the world for everything?
