It was on the treadmill the other day.
Just another afternoon.
Headphones in, doing that half-focused thing where, you know, you're watching whatever happens to be on the TV in front of you.
And that particular afternoon, there was a college football game on at the gym.
It was Kentucky versus Vanderbilt.
Now, I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of either program here.
But you didn't have to be an expert to see what was happening.
It wasn't a game, it was a beatdown, right?
A lopsided, no question, outmatched, outclass, outgunned type of beating.
The kind where, in my opinion, again, just watching this from the treadmill, you know,
if you simulated it a thousand times, Kentucky might win once, right, one time.
And I'm watching this, you know, as it unfold, something kind of hits me.
It feels relatable.
in a sense where it's like I can think of times in my life where I've been Kentucky and life has been Vanderbilt.
You know, life just sometimes feels like that.
And I think a lot of people are in the same boat.
And it's like you show up every day hoping that today is the miracle day, right?
That today is the one in a thousand that things are going to unfold in that direction.
you've been hoping they would.
You know, the cosmic accident where everything clicks,
luck shows up and, you know, you somehow pull the win out that you didn't prepare for.
I think people do this, right?
Go to life outmatched, outplanned, under-equipped,
praying for, you know, the universe to throw a hill Mary.
But those are terrible odds.
And worse, they're unnecessary odds.
because you're not here to hope for a miracle.
You're here to build a life where winning becomes the expectation,
not an exception or Hail Mary using the same metaphor.
And that's really where this took hold,
because if Kentucky were serious about turning things around,
at least in this metaphor, right, if they wanted to compete,
if they wanted to win, what would they do?
With such a giant hill to climb,
where would they start
and more importantly
because this obviously is not about Kentucky's football program
where should you start
let's play with the idea for a little bit
part one first and foremost
if Kentucky wanted to rebuild their program first step
would be not recruiting
wouldn't be new plays it wouldn't be a better weight room
it would be first of all belief
they'd have to have conviction in themselves
before anything else that there's a world where they can be great.
They can be the metaphorical Alabamas of the world.
A world where they are the top dog
and they walk into every stadium expecting to win.
If you don't believe that ending is possible, get out.
It's over.
You'll never take the steps that lead you there
and life is the exact same way.
People will never attribute more value to you
than you attribute to yourself.
That's incredibly important to remember.
You don't rise to the level of your own.
ambition, you rise to the level of what you believe you deserve. So you want a better life?
Hey, start accepting that you're capable of building one. Imagine yourself as the person who
rises, the person who wins, the person who deserves to walk into the arena with a head held high.
Belief is a door. Everything else happens on the other side of it. Next, the North Star.
If a football program wants to change, have to be a football program.
to realign everything around their mission.
They fire their athletic director to the sun.
They bring in leadership that understands where the ship needs to go.
They define that North Star.
Where are we going to be?
What do we stand for?
What does success look like?
This isn't cosmetic.
It's foundational.
In life, you need the same thing.
You need a clear picture of who you're becoming,
a North Star that everything else in your life, in your world, points to.
Because drifting doesn't get you anywhere.
hoping doesn't get you anywhere.
Waiting again for that one in one thousand miracle does not get you anywhere.
The house wins on those odds.
But clarity gets you somewhere and direction gets you somewhere,
knowing who you're trying to become does.
When you know that, your life starts realigning almost automatically, right?
Bad habits fall away, wrong people fade out, opportunities show up.
Because for the first time, you're actually.
ready to meet them.
Part three, the head coach.
Right now, let's get tactical.
X's and O's, every great football program
has a great head coach.
Someone who sets the tone,
someone who draws the blueprint,
someone who says, hey, here's how we're going to win.
Day-to-day, inch by inch.
For you, that head coach is structure.
It's discipline.
It's how you manage your mornings.
How you choose your evenings.
How you spend the hours in between.
Structure is not the enemy.
Structure is the thing.
that frees you.
I think it's Jocko that famously says discipline equals freedom.
When you manage your day with intention,
when you decide what matters before, you know,
the world decides for you,
you're no longer hoping for that miracle.
You're building outcomes.
Constructing wins.
Your schedule becomes your philosophy in action.
Next, part four of the coordinators.
A head coach can't win championships.
You need coordinators, specialists, experts,
managing different parts of the,
whole offensive defensive special teams right each one focused on their lane your life needs something
similar you need a fitness coordinator or a health coordinator right someone protecting your health
and energy and body you need a growth coordinator someone making sure you're you know learning
evolving growing a business coordinator someone strategizing your work and your craft maybe your
career in totality a relationship coordinator someone nurture someone nurtured
the people who matter to you.
These roles might be all played by you,
but they cannot be ignored.
They can't be left to chance.
When you neglect one of those critical pillars,
the whole team suffers, because winning isn't one thing,
it's everything.
Part five is the roster, right?
Then there's the personnel, the players.
Kentucky could hire the best coach and best coordinators,
build the best facilities, but without the right people,
They're losing every game.
You are the same way, right?
Your roster is the people you let into your life.
It's the content you consume.
The voices you listen to, the environments you choose to stand in.
You don't rise alone.
You rise with the people and influences you surround yourself with.
Your roster will either elevate or limit you, so choose wisely.
Lastly, part six, let's put it all together.
Let's put a bow on this metaphor.
Most people go through life, like that version of Kentucky.
Hoping today is the one in a thousand miracle.
Hoping the universe blesses them with luck.
Hoping circumstances magically shift.
Hoping the outcome changes while everything else stays the same.
But hope is not a strategy.
And luck is not a lifestyle.
You don't need one in 1,000 odds.
Your life should not be a lottery.
And the beauty is it doesn't have to be
because you pull the strings.
You're writing this story.
And when you rebuild the program,
when you believe, when you choose a North Star,
when you structure your days,
when you manage the units of your life,
when you curate the right roster,
Suddenly, piece by piece, winning becomes predictable.
Inevitable.
Expected.
That's the shift.
From hoping all the way to engineering,
from wishing over to building,
from maybe to, of course.
You're not here to play the miracle game.
You're here to write the playbook.
And I know it seems overwhelming
when you're down 40 points at halftime.
It's easy to look around and think this is rigged, this is stacked against me.
No, you just have to pick it apart piece by piece.
And you can.
You can build a life where you win consistently.
You can become the kind of person who doesn't need the odds because you created your own.
What's up, guys, Eddie here.
And before we jump into the next chapter, just a quick note.

It's a great way to support the channel
and also elevate your journey.
Let it be a reminder to keep showing up.
Appreciate your time.
Always grateful.
Never satisfied.
On to the next.
Today is not like a.
any day I've lived before.
And why should it be?
In this very second, there are roads to be explored that I've never before walked down.
There are actions to take that I've never before taken and ideas to bring to life that
I've never before given the respect they deserve.
That's saying, my golden rule, you are always one decision.
away from a totally different life.
You are always one realization from pulling the lever, opening the door, finding the answer you've
been walking by all your life.
The problem is you don't see today as today, you see it as a continuation of yesterday, the
same movie with the same characters and same rules without even realizing you need
to change the script.
Emerson said,
write it on your heart
that every day is the best day in the year.
Why?
Because it can be.
Your job is to remember
that things will continue on
and on and on
until we give them an end.
We must manually
close the book on yesterday's story
and start anew
because we can.
We often don't realize,
But we can.
And that is why the morning.
Each new day is so precious.
It's taking the mistakes and sometimes disappointments of yesterday
and transforming them into today's lessons
and the opportunity to begin again.
A new journey seen through a new lens,
walked through a new pair of shoes,
a new sense of self.
So here is your reminder that the words were and are
They're very different.
That's why each sunrise transcribes into the sky,
the hopes and dreams of the you that you've always wanted to be.
It's not a crazy formula or some secret code.
It's simply untying your boat from the harbor that is yesterday
and moving towards tomorrow's horizon.
Dear younger me, there's a lot that you don't know.
A lot you're pretty sure you understand,
but couldn't possibly wrap your hands around.
Because the most important things in life,
the things that you'll remember,
they're the very things that seem like footnotes in your story.
Background noise, hidden in plain view.
So Younger me, hear me out because time,
Time goes by quickly.
And we only get one opportunity to do this dance,
one chance to do this thing right.
Younger me, when you wake up,
be thankful for the shoes on your feet,
the house you live in, the life you lead.
Because if all you do is focus on what you don't have
or the next milestone, happiness becomes a mirage.
Younger me, the world is you know,
It isn't something that was destined to be.
It's here because people know smarter than you have the courage to build it.
Never be scared to challenge what is.
This place will be better because of it.
And younger me, it will always be easier to play it safe, to stay comfortable, but I want
you to understand something.
That's not where you'll find the good stuff.
If you don't take chances you'll spend your time wondering what could have been.
Younger me, believe in your greatness.
This world can be a tough place, and if you don't believe in yourself, no one will do it for you.
No one will hand you the sky.
Earn excellence every day, it's there, I promise.
Younger me, don't get distracted by the small stuff, the little things that so easily consume
our energy and emotions, don't lose sight of who you are and what means the most to you.
Everything else washes away.
Younger me, you didn't have all the answers,
but somehow you were exactly what I needed you to be.
You created a map.
You showed that change can't happen
until one falls victim to life's imperfections.
That risks aren't taken until you've experienced regret,
that confidence isn't acquired
if you don't learn to play the student,
And most importantly, if you don't allow yourself to get lost, you will never discover who you truly are.
20 years from now, when we meet again, younger me, I know you'll do the same.
I know you'll have given me everything I needed, nothing more and nothing less.
Because time goes by quickly.
And we only get one opportunity to do this dance, one chance to make this right.
And I promise you, younger me, that it won't be wasted.
So much of life comes down to control.
Understanding what we cannot control while simultaneously capitalizing and making the most of the things that we can.
a constant awareness that's critical to our evolution.
Epictetus wrote,
We must be at once cautious and courageous.
Courageous in what does not depend upon choice.
And cautious in what does.
And this idea has been shared many, many times
in many ways over the centuries.
Another of which a lot of folks have heard
is the serenity prayer, right?
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
But regardless of how it's said and who it's said to,
the point is the same.
There are things we cannot control
that we must find a way to stop exerting ourselves,
stop exhausting our energy on.
They are, as the saying goes, what they are.
These obstacles are immovable.
And rather than continue to push and push and push
with all our strength and energy,
our time is best suited,
learning to effectively navigate them.
And then there exists those things that are in our control.
I believe it was the power of now by Eckhart Tolle.
He said, and I'm paraphrasing, if something cannot be changed, stop thinking about it, right?
The future represents anxiety.
It's worrying about things that haven't happened yet.
The past is essentially depression.
It's worrying about things that already happened.
We can't do anything about the past.
past or the future, all we have is now. And if it can be changed, then act now and bringing about a
desired result. Take that first step. Create some semblance of momentum, no matter how small,
but to worry about what is behind you or in front of you is actually insanity. I remember loving the
simplicity and pointedness of that message. Accept it. Eliminate it.
or adjust yourself to it.
Sometimes it helps when I think about things in metaphors,
and I tend to do it often.
This morning I was drinking coconut water, right, of all things.
And I was thinking, man, it would be nice.
You know those little pieces of coconut that float around in there?
It would be great if they were not in there, right?
So I have this idea, just grab a strainer,
pour it through the strainer into the glass.
I'm leaning over the counter, watching the pieces,
of coconut collect in the strainer and I'm just thinking sort of zoning out.
Like imagine if those were my problems, just being separated out of my life just like that,
how nice it would be, captured in a little net and then, you know, discarded, thrown away.
But, you know, it didn't take me long to realize a couple things.
One, such an idea would never happen.
Life will always have some obstacle to place before us.
That's what light does.
After all, the word is predicated upon the avoidance of death.
It's a struggle and a necessary one.
Which leads me to the realization number two, we want hardship.
You know, purpose and meaning.
They're derived from our willingness to overcome adversity and transform because of it.
A life without struggle is a car without wheels.
And sure, you might avoid the fender benders, but you're not leaving the grower.
garage. So that's a thumbs down. So I thought, okay, well, what if I slightly adjust that
thinking? What if it's a subset of problems that I can remove? That's when it kind of hit me,
the opportunity at hand, right? Not the so-called problems, but my thoughts about them. There are the
real difference maker here, the negative storytelling that can be removed, pushed through the
strain. Again, not novel or groundbreaking. Like I said a few minutes ago, this idea has been around
for thousands of years, but sometimes things land perfectly, right moment, right time. And I knew what I
needed to do was remove the worries and concerns pertaining to the events that I could not change.
Yet I exhaust my energy dancing around and around with my thoughts about them. You cannot
change the future. You can change right now, which ultimately becomes the future. And there's a
difference. I had to, you know, pull that back in. See, I think most of our problems are derived from
anger or emotional attachment to the immovable, the unchangeable. One of my favorite sayings is
you can't change the direction of the wind, but you can always adjust your sails. And see,
when you remove the self-tormenting you have going on about your past,
things you wish you did or didn't do.
When you remove the concern
that the future won't be exactly what you want it to be,
which tends to be where I lean of the two,
you're left with one thing.
The present, right?
Clarity.
You have officially empowered yourself
because the things you allocate your energy to
can be changed, can be made better or adjusted.
And that's really what it's all about.
You can't change the fact that someone you loved or cared about let you down.
But when you dwell on it, you're now giving up the present as well.
You're preventing yourself from doing what is required of you now to make your life better.
You can't control the fact that your company is reducing its size and your department is being eliminated.
Can't control the fact that 8% get a good.
accepted to whatever you're applying to. Can't control the fact that you will be criticized for doing
the unpopular thing, the thing that you believe to be right. And I say these things not to be a downer.
I actually don't think there's anything sad about this to the contrary. Now that you've accepted
these truths, accepted this as reality, now you can move toward what's best for you. No more dwelling
on the unchangeable.
No more fighting unwinnable wars.
No, it's time to go put yourself in position
to conquer whatever mountain is next.
By straining out the things that cannot be changed,
you are left only with what can.
You can't change your company's personnel reduction,
but you can find something else, something better out there.
You can set the stage for a new journey.
You can't increase the acceptance rate, but you can increase your value.
Go above and beyond.
Put yourself in position to succeed.
And if you don't, they're lost.
Continue learning.
Continue growing.
Continue moving forward.
You can't stop the world's criticism.
But you can learn to toughen up emotionally.
Learn to trust your intuition and decision making.
Surround yourself with people you trust who lift you up.
See, when you stop wasting time and energy on the wrong things, you get the right things.
Like Greg McKeown says in essentialism, it's now but we can acquire.
But often what we cut away, removing the things that weigh us down, that we're dragging along with us everywhere we go, they don't need to be there.
I say to myself often that I have everything I need.
It's there.
Some of it's materialized.
Some of it exists as a seed that I need to identify and water and nurture, but it's all right here.
Which means the problem will never be that I'm incapable.
It will never be that I'm not good enough.
No, when I'm in the wrong, it's because I've forgotten to see it.
I've either become consumed with the wrong things or lost faith in myself to do the right thing.
And knowing this has been a gift.
It's been tremendous.
It's helped me even during the darkest moments to reacquire what matters most.
Sometimes it takes hours, sometimes days, even weeks or longer, but I get there.
Eventually, I arrive and so can you.
You have the ability to parse out why you feel the way you do.
To categorize the thoughts in your head.
Can I change it?
No, okay, gone.
And with all that's left, begin.
the journey, the good stuff, the adversity and the problems that will make you who you are.
And don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying it will be easy, but I'm saying it will be worth it.
And that's critical to understand. Your world is there to maneuver and adjust to reshape.
But its transformation depends on a laser-like focus on that which is malleable.
That's saying, do what you can, where you are with what you have. It will.
lead you to exactly where you need to be.
Even if you don't trust the road before you, trust yourself to walk down it.
We all fall down, but only a few choose to get back up.
A few depersonalized failure.
A few understand that falling is the cost of greatness.
Your reality is not what happens to you.
Your reality is how you internalize what happens to you.
Or obstacles stop signs.
Or are they checkpoints along the way to something greater?
Checkpoints that make you stronger, build you up, become your armor,
that is ultimately the difference.
What we misinterpret in life is,
the meaning behind that difficulty, that pain, that suffering.
No one gets a pain-free life.
No one gets a free ride.
Suffering is inevitable.
As Nietzsche says, to live is to suffer, to survive, is to find meaning in the suffering.
And what's changed my life, and I don't mean here and there,
I mean truly transformed the course and trajectory of what's possible,
is simply redefining that way.
which is difficult.
I grew up watching the Kobe's and the Brady's of the world.
I remember thinking, how do these guys get better
when things get difficult?
I mean, as a kid, I could feel the pressure
watching from the couch, but they somehow elevate themselves
when the odds are stacked against them.
Same exact situation that causes most to doubt,
to run, to lose their self-belief.
What they see that alludes most is that in every present,
moment, there's opportunity. Every loss has something to gain. In every failure, there is victory.
Everyone has the same rule book. It's just that some people only see what is right in front of them.
Others learn to read between the lines and create outcomes that have not yet arrived.
When things are hard or challenging or uncertain, it's not that you're. You're not that you,
You should keep going.
It's that you must keep going.
Everything good, everything rewarding worth having is on the other side of that struggle.
Everything meaningful is built from the days you felt like there was no possible way to move
on but did anyway.
That is the core of greatness.
Carrying forward when it would have been easier not to.
When you feel the hurt, the emotional turmoil, and I get it, we all do, but beyond that feeling,
what are you willing to see?
Beyond the ashes, what are you willing to build?
What are you willing to do with those pieces?
Because it can be nothing or it can be everything.
It all depends on how you choose to step back and look at the world.
Your perspective becomes the roadmap for your reality.
So understand that feeling down or loss is normal, but staying down is a choice.
There are no problems.
There are stepping stones.
The very situations that make you who you are.
The little decisions that over time equip you to step up when it matters most,
When the pressure's on, the odds are against you, the rest of the world says no.
No matter how hard it gets, there is an answer.
Rise above the emotion, the chaos, the present moment, and see the big picture.
Not only will you survive, you will be better because of this.
Because you kept moving forward when it wasn't easy.
No matter how hard life got, you never lost sight.
of the opportunity and that made all the difference show them who you are as
Emerson said to be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you
something else is the greatest accomplishment it is nothing short of courage
walk into that dark cave that is your potential
to become a pioneer of uncharted worlds in search of who you might become.
It is courage to leave what will be accepted for an idea that will certainly be misunderstood.
At least initially, it means you're playing by new rules using new metrics.
Not the rubric that's already been handed out, no anything but that.
And that is the fundamental.
difference between those who create and those who react, those who fight to discover who they are,
and those who hide behind the mask of acceptance.
It's courage.
See, anyone can criticize.
Anyone can condemn or tear down.
But who's willing to run the gauntlet?
Who's willing to subject themselves to that hell?
Who wants something better so bad that they trade comfort and the reassurance of now
for a life to ultimately be proud of?
To be excited when the sun comes through the window, when they jump out of bed in the morning.
There are most definitely complexities in life.
And we do our best to understand them, to navigate through them.
That question, that particular question in my mind,
will always be simple. Do you have the courage to show them who you are to make that decision?
Not reflect back their wishes and their reality like a mirror, but create your own. Harness it.
Carry it up the mountain like a torch through the night. See, what I've come to understand is that
knowing simply is not enough. Understanding is not enough.
replicating is not enough. What these things lack is you. And if I had to best represent this
understanding, it would be like this. If you take a musician, a technically sound musician, she can play.
A student of music. Well, he can understand and recite. An expert in the craft. Well, she can teach.
but it's only someone who injects their authentic self into these abilities
that can touch the hearts of people around them,
change their lives,
fill minds with wonder and awe.
Because when you take a step back and really see what's going on,
the songs that are sung,
well, they're not sung because they are the most technical or most advanced
because they followed the rules.
No, we sing them because,
They meant something when we heard them.
Their authors had the courage to move a step beyond understanding
and into the vulnerability that is self-discovery.
That is creation.
It is a microcosm of life.
And in a world where comfort is not only pushed upon us,
but it's the essence of what makes us human,
Saying no, well it feels like running uphill.
When you blend in, you can't be questioned.
When you blend in, you rarely lose.
When you blend in, there is no risk.
But when you blend in, there is no you.
And I'm not suggesting you missed the mark or you lost the battle.
I'm suggesting that every once in a while,
We need to be reminded that the journey has not even begun.
That down the road you'll see those people around you,
they weren't so much concerned about you as they were themselves.
That everyone is scared, everyone is unsure, no one knows or has the answer.
But man, to see that, to feel that and move forward anyway,
to know that you're worthy of a tomorrow greater than,
and today, that is a courage rarely understood.
And Emerson gives us, with that message, everything we need.
The wisdom to know there's more, and most importantly,
the courage to show yourself and the world who you are.
