Starting point is 00:00:02 This moment is a collage of your past. The steps that brought you here, the things that shaped you, it's a story comprised of what you choose to remember. And so I ask which memories get your attention. Or do you choose to shine that potentially life-changing spotlight? What are you looking back on? Do you remember those times you felt lost? Those times life was turned upside down when you went into panic mode,
Starting point is 00:00:45 when you were perfectly mapped out reality was shaken at its foundation. Yet you got up and found steady ground. Do you remember that? Do you remember when the things you thought were forever turned out to be as fleeting as a setting sun? When you realized a life well lived would mean figuring out the vast majority of it on your own, relying on your courage and your strength. Yet you pushed into the dark of night and lit a path, didn't you? Do you remember that?
Starting point is 00:01:31 Do you remember the hard hits? The blatant losses, the gut-punching defeats. When you looked in the mirror and thought, this reflection, it's just not who it needs. to be. This burden is too much to carry. Yet you got yourself together. You found faith in your reflection. And you not only carried that burden, but you made something of it, didn't you? Do you remember that? What do you choose to remember? And I'm not talking imagine or create or bring to life. No, which truths are you letting in?
Starting point is 00:02:15 How quickly we forget who we are, how fleeting the recollection of our strength. See, if you take a single step back and examine, you'll see a breathtaking sample size of the demons already defeated. The mountains already climbed, the dragons already slayed, and you stand here now, afraid and unsure, as if you haven't already fought through the depths of hell, as if you haven't already proven to yourself. that you've been there as if this moment is new to you. You have what you need. And that's not the law of attraction or conjecture or hopeful thinking. It's remembering what you know in your soul to be true.
Starting point is 00:03:04 You are made for this road laid out before you. There's an African proverb states every morning A gazelle wakes up and knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. And every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up and knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better be running. Because stagnation is losing. Because wishing is a sealed fate.
Starting point is 00:04:21 Because immobility is regret. As David Goggin says, you are either getting better or you are getting worse. And in a world comprised of no finish lines, that really simplifies the picture, doesn't it? Because this has nothing to do with yesterday. For the self-defeating stories you used to tell yourself, it's about what reality can become. And the best news you'll ever hear is that the steps that brought you to right now, they are not the same steps that will carry you forward. Every single sunrise is a chance to chase down that which sets your soul on fire. Lion or gazelle, day or night, it is never too late to become what you have never been, to rewrite your story.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Not for the doubters or the naysayers, but for you. See, they'll never get it. They'll never understand that your progress is your happiness, while you'd endure the depths of hell twice to be five seconds faster, a little, better to build a little higher, it's not nuance. It is survival, woven into your DNA, and just as much a part of you as the heart in your chest. See, today is a currency, the most valuable entity you possess. Clay where dreams are molded, light that turns unknowns into outcomes, impossibles into stepping stones, it's why each step is so precious. Because each one is a bridge to a part of you yet to be explored. See, Nietzsche said it best.
Starting point is 00:06:26 One must still have chaos in oneself to give birth to a dancing star. It is why we build these metaphorical arenas. Because without them, there are no dragons to slay. There are no mountains to climb or armies to conquer. It is from chaos that order is born. Every crack of the sword brings understanding. When the sun comes up, there is no wishing for a better world. There is creating in yourself the one who will make it better.
Starting point is 00:07:04 The one who will lead himself and others who will find amidst the horizon. the existence of a world within. What does it mean to give 100% effort on something? Is it possible to say with absolute certainty that you couldn't have done better? How do you know that you couldn't have run one second faster, done one more rep, scored one point higher? How do you know that there wasn't more in you to give?
Starting point is 00:08:25 In terms of human potential, there's a little bit more in you to give. There's no such thing as a limit. It's a fabricated completely negative debilitating idea. So why? Why in a million years would you put obstacles in front of yourself that aren't there? In reality you can always be one step better one step further than you are now. That's a fact and simply knowing that knocks down walls it opens doors for you to make moves to progress or in Buffett has a great quote on maximizing effort. He's speaking from a business standpoint, and he says the one thing that is absolutely sure to kill a business is complacency. Being comfortable with where you are, thinking that your current effort is sufficient,
Starting point is 00:09:20 that it's enough. It isn't. And if you get comfortable, someone willing to pay a steeper price will come along and take what's yours. And there is always someone working hard to do just that. When you think about your dreams, what you're striving toward, I'm sure you have some plan, some routine day in, day out to get there, to make it happen. Maybe you're moving forward, maybe you're in a rough spot. But regardless of your situation, there are positively untapped opportunities to move quicker, to be better. And these opportunities, they just sit there, and they'll sit there for an eternity if you don't recognize them and utilize them.
Starting point is 00:10:06 I'll use the example of an athlete. When you break it down, an athlete's work is comprised of physical training, you have the mental component, their diet. And to say you want to be the best is one thing, but if you can't strip down your goal into these simple components and ask yourself, how can I be a little better in each area? You won't grow to the level you're capable of. You won't be the elite athlete. you're missing the key ingredients to success. Even sitting on the couch, watching TV.
Starting point is 00:10:47 You know, it's a normal thing we all do it. You unwind, you relax for a few minutes. But think about taking that half hour and reallocating it. And instead, sending three emails to people, you know, who have been successful in your field, whether you know them or not. No, who have done what you're trying to do. See if you can connect, have a valuable conversation. Maybe it results in nothing.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Maybe it creates a relationship that changes your life. Who knows? But I can tell you for damn sure that the TV will not do that. And this is an arbitrary example. But I think it's an important one because it shows that if you truly want something, you'll use every opportunity to get better, even the little ones,
Starting point is 00:11:33 because every second is a game changer. Always be asking yourself, what can you be doing differently? What can you be doing better? Never be content with where you are. Be analytical. Be searching for the next step because there is always a next step. And realizing this is just the beginning. There's something about the way we perceive success that results in one of the greatest tragedies of our time. And that's the belief that successful people the ones at the top of their game, that talent is what punched their ticket, that destiny brought them to the finish line.
Starting point is 00:12:33 And that's wrong. It's wrong because it takes the journey, the struggle, the scratching, and clawing that it took to get to the top of the mountain and throws it out the window. It completely mitigates what's most important. In the real world, the one we are. living in. It doesn't matter who you are, you are never entitled to a result. Victory is the product of the fight ever do for yourself. As you progress through life's up and downs through the good and the bad when things get rough is know that you are going
Starting point is 00:13:28 through what every successful person, every champion, every innovator has gone through in the history of mankind. Struggle is people. It's a sign that you are in the midst of what separates great from average. It's a necessary step and it's the most important step you will ever take because 99% of people can't see past it. Right? The world sees struggle, sees hardship as a time to pack it up, to walk away, to be intimidated. But the best, I'm telling you, they look at struggle. different just like you can't get fit without blood, sweat, and tears at the gym, you can't
Starting point is 00:14:22 make deals without the hustle, you can't make things happen if you don't move forward in the face of adversity. When the word no is staring you in the eyes, it's all part of the process. Winners walk on. If you want something bad enough, you know that being uncomfortable is an greedy. If you want to be the best, your mindset has to reflect the best. Right, let others focus on the tip of the iceberg. You know excellence lies in everything underneath the surface in what cannot be seen. So take mediocrity and make it excellent. Take what's yours and hold it up for the world. Because what hurts now in the present is the very same thing that will transform your life down the In order to become something new, you have to leave something behind. You have to detach in some capacity, remove yourself from the physical realm, because the obstacles that we face are not physical. 99% of our problems are not physical.
Starting point is 00:15:58 They're mental. And you know, as you sort of drive that metaphorical ship into the horizon, the biggest turn is never going to be the anchor or the headwind or the bowline no it's going to be the storyline it's going to be the narrative of the person navigating that ship and it's interesting because our first inclination when we feel stuck
Starting point is 00:16:26 it's always to point out attribute our problems to the world in this predetermined position within it maybe that's the issue We take our power, we put it into the universe, cross our fingers, and hope things work out. But that will always be a losing proposition. It will always come crumbling down, because it's not the world that keeps you from showing up. You're not physically incapable of taking that first step or growing or evolving, developing, becoming something new.
Starting point is 00:17:07 No, that demon lives in your head. That's the mental Goliath we struggle with. Right? Because there's cognitive dissonance between who we know ourselves to be and who we want ourselves to be. That's the sea we have to cross. The terrain we have to navigate. It's not the physicality of taking the steps. Anyone can do that.
Starting point is 00:17:33 It's believing that you are worthy of the journey. And you have to ask yourself, is it a thing? Is it that you can't become something new? Or is it that you can't, won't, refuse to detach from who you used to be? You're still tucked away in that container, that box you've been building for years and years and years that you've placed yourself in because I can promise you. One of the most liberating things to understand is yesterday is not a life sentence. Yesterday's not forever.
Starting point is 00:18:12 Yesterday's not defining. It's simply a stepping stone. And every morning when you open your eyes, sun comes through the window, illuminates life around you. That's never your cue to put on a fake smile. Play the same role you've been playing day after day after day. No, it's an invitation to do anything you want to do.
Starting point is 00:18:36 To begin again. to start fresh. It's an opportunity to detach from that character. Detach from the people and the things that don't push you towards what you want. Detach from the negative self-talk. And when all that's gone, everything is removed and it's only you and your self-belief, a will to move forward. I promise you that pendulum shifts. Life becomes simple and how beautiful simplicity is. It's shining a spotlight on what matters. It's clarity.
Starting point is 00:19:13 It's taking control. It's picking up the clay and molding what you want to mold. It's opening the door and deciding to walk through. Everything else is variable. Everything else is noise. Everything else is detail and distraction. Because what you want, it's there. And it's waiting for you to simply remove yourself
Starting point is 00:19:36 from who you used to be to step into right now and believe that you are worthy of everything else. So imagine you're sitting down, having something to eat, thinking, relaxing, reading, whatever you're doing.
Starting point is 00:20:13 Someone walks up to the table across from you, pulls out the chair, sits down, kind of leans back, puts one leg over the other, casually tells you, you probably don't have what it takes to do anything significant in your life. What would you say?
Starting point is 00:20:30 It would be outrageous, right? That's a ridiculous scenario. Well, let's say that the next day you get up and you go to walk, run, work out, and he shows up again. Starts running next to you, casually reminding you that the odds of you changing, doing anything for the better or slim to none, that this is kind of a waste of time for you. You brush it off, you go to work, and guess who's
Starting point is 00:20:54 Who, right, he passes by your desk, leaves a little note saying, you know, that your bosses, your higher ups, they're cut from a different cloth. They just see things in a way you can't. You'd probably tell that person to take a long walk off a short pier, right? Or at the very least, you'd understand how absolutely insane the situation is. People can't just walk up and talk to you like that. But now imagine that same person is you, living rent-free in your head. And here's the catch.
Starting point is 00:21:24 you invited him in. You allowed the negativity and the doubt to live there. See, every time I think about that self-talk, I can't help but wonder in a world of obstacles to navigate and challenges to tackle, why is it acceptable for your biggest obstacle to be you? Why should you allow or be okay with that? And I'm not saying everything's perfect all the time.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Every thought's pure bliss, but I am posing this question. If you don't believe in yourself, how do you expect anyone else to? If you're not your biggest ally, if you don't respect the person staring back at you in the mirror, how do you expect the world to? Why is our inclination to tense up and refute the negativity from others, but sit back and accept the same nonsense in our own heads? If those words don't support what you're trying to build, I don't care who they're from, where they come from, why they're there,
Starting point is 00:22:27 they don't deserve your time. And it's a simple awareness that they are not truth, but merely your fears and your insecurities trying to stop you from becoming who you might be. My biggest leaps in life, they didn't come from physical milestones or benchmarks. They came from mental shifts, convincing myself believing myself trusting in myself when the road is
Starting point is 00:22:54 untravelled when the story is untold the positive and the negative are both make-believe they are both fairy tales their options their theories and guess what you get to choose which option which one will be yours my favorite quote is you are always stronger than you think you are not so much because it reiterates how high the bar is But because it reminds me how low we often set it for ourselves when we're not paying attention. How loud that negative voice can be. You know, when I was unemployed, I was writing, I was running out of money, my life changed because I stopped seeing myself as some lost, jobless mess.
Starting point is 00:23:35 And I started seeing myself as one of the greats with a hell of a road to travel. See, people always follow through on who they believe themselves to be. I refuse to hear that you might fail and the not good enough and I buckled up for the road ahead and when you believe you can change and know that the road to your goals will be rocky, you will be uncomfortable but worth it. You are taking that hostile voice and making him or her a spectator, not a decider of fate. And yeah, you will lose, you can't win all the time and you will feel stuck, but life's not always smooth sailing and sure you'll be mad at yourself, but not every,
Starting point is 00:24:15 decision is a home run. But these situations are the byproduct of a journey and here is my point. Self-belief is being able to differentiate your situation and pointless negative talk about the situation. It's about remembering that you are the gatekeeper of your own mind. When you believe in you, it places your faith, your strength and your determination in the driver's seat. It makes everything else trivial. meaningless. It makes it an option that you are simply not going to choose.
