Starting point is 00:00:00 The moral is to the physical as three is to one. A quote attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte regarding his troops' morale in battle. Victory starts and ends with mindset. So, the myth or story goes, Napoleon had a coin. And he was known prior to embarking upon particular battles to flip this coin. He would say if it lands on heads, my friends, it's not our day. We weren't meant to fight. We'll stay here and fight some other day. However, if it lands on tails, the gods are on our side. We're meant to charge into battle
Starting point is 00:00:44 and collect our victory, for it is destined. And every time this coin landed on tails, the army would proceed into battle. They would march into the onslaught of on-concerns. coming bullets of weapons and fire raining down on them, and they would collect their victory. And as time passed, Napoleon died. This coin was eventually found. And upon examination, something interesting was uncovered. The coin was tails on both sides. This coin had nothing to do with the gods. It was about preparing his men for victory. in their minds before ever stepping onto a battlefield. It was about believing in an outcome before pursuing its realization.
Starting point is 00:01:43 This is life. To believe something is possible is perhaps the greatest weapon one can have in their arsenal. When you believe something is possible, the question goes from can I to how will I? The gap is bringing. The gap is bridged, the terrain is crossed, because time is not exhausted on the likelihood of the outcome, but on its materialization.
Starting point is 00:02:16 I heard someone say years ago that some of the most incredible things in history were accomplished by people too ignorant of the odds to be held back by them. Dreams are self-fulfilling prophecies. They require one be crucial crazy enough to willingly navigate the enemy's fire. To step into hostile territory.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Put a stake in the ground and live as though you were meant to be there. To operate knowing the unknown is where answers live and excuses die. It's believing that the world doesn't dictate your fate. It just adds variables to the story. It puts building blocks at your feet, places a paint brush in your hand. You are the only one who chooses whether to stop or go, to quit or continue. Life can place obstacles before you, but only you decide whether to bow down to them, navigate around them, or march directly through them.
Starting point is 00:03:41 We win behind our eyes before we go into the world and collect our medals. The moral is to the physical as three is to one. So close your eyes, win your victories, then go out into the world and collect them. You're here. That's a clever little sign hanging above the sidewalk right at the the border where Pompano Beach turns into Loderdale by the sea. And as it turns out, that spot is almost directly in the middle, one of my favorite running routes, almost exactly halfway, which at first I found kind of annoying, being that, no, I was
Starting point is 00:04:53 not where I wanted to be or intended to be, and no, I certainly could not relax. The heat and the sun and the miles to go always begged to differ. Right, false advertising. It was not in fact here. After all, here in this context suggests one has arrived. And how can arrival feel like missing pieces and unknowns? How can it feel like so far to go? In the valley of despair, can one really be here?
Starting point is 00:05:34 But the more and more I took that route, the more the little sign became a landmark in and of itself. something that I looked forward to, its own little destination, a point in which I could both look over my shoulder and realize how far I've come, as well as find reassurance for the journey ahead. It was a manufacturer pat on the back, a change in narrative, because here's the deal, it's easy to feel lost in the middle.
Starting point is 00:06:07 It just is. It's easy to feel empty-handed after days, or months or years, it's easy to fall into the trap of never enough. But if you step back and adjust your perspective, you see it for exactly what it is. A beautiful process. Here doesn't have to be the predetermined destination. Here can be the culmination of all the steps it took you to arrive at the now.
Starting point is 00:06:42 Here can be the lessons learned along the time. away can be the reassurance that while you're not done, you've overcome every obstacle up until this point and there's no reason to think you won't continue that pattern moving forward. So relax, you're here. Perhaps here being a place of trust. The ability to look in the mirror and sure, see your opportunity areas, but way more important see your brilliant, your tenacity, your courage, after all, when armed with those traits, it doesn't matter where you're dropped off at or placed.
Starting point is 00:07:29 There's no finish line that's too far away, no mountaintop that's beyond you. Where you end up in the game of life will be directly correlated to the level of trust you have in yourself to play. So relax. You're here. Maybe here being that point where you can make the leap you've always wanted to make. Where you can feel confident that the unknowns don't stop you, they inspire you, where you see the past as proof that your limitations exist, only where you decide they do.
Starting point is 00:08:14 And here is not a wall or a barrier but a springboard to the next great adventure. where you find that spark of inspiration to push against life and see what comes back. To test the waters, ride the wave, that self-identified beginning that lights a fire in your soul. So relax, you're here. Maybe here being the point where you realize you've been selling yourself just a little bit short. where the image of yourself that you've created in your head is lacking. The metaphorical shoes you've been wearing have been outgrown. And here is where you change them for something that better suits you.
Starting point is 00:09:11 Where you make a contract with yourself to endure the growing pains and the discomfort, where you willingly pick up the pace, and exchange for that adrenaline rush associated with less, leveling up. The excitement of the wind on your face, the increased speed opening up your mind to the realization that you haven't even scratched the surface with regard to your potential. And that alone is a gift. So relax.
Starting point is 00:09:47 You're here. Maybe here is a reminder to simply enjoy the now. to stop thinking only about what's down the road and look around, to realize that the future is just a fantasy about what might come. In the past is a retelling of stories that have already occurred, making your experience on this planet only right now. A culmination of right now is stacking up to comprise your entire life, And while the destination is the purpose that pulls you through,
Starting point is 00:10:31 the very idea of a destination is essentially trading a current right now for a future one. So maybe look around and enjoy what you have. Appreciate the moment in all its glory. Relax. You're here. See, whatever here means to you, It's essential that we know even in the heart of the storm, the chaos of battle mid-jurney, that you have everything you need. Not just to survive, but to adjust and re-examine, to identify what means the most to you and follow that like your life depends on it.
Starting point is 00:11:27 Relax, you are here. Here being the inflection point that separates the past from the future, that cuts your negative self-talk and those self-imposed limitations down to the nothings that they are. For me, that sign and its message have become a reminder of the duality of life. The tightrope that I have to walk between chasing down the dreams that. pull me out of bed every morning and simultaneously cherishing the moments that comprise the journey. Sure, it's the halfway point of my run and sure I have ways to go. Sure, celebrating now would be counterproductive, but breathe in. Look what I get to do. Look where I am. Look what I have.
Starting point is 00:12:31 They say we live not for the destination, but the journey, and I think that's, that's, That's right. I think in a way the finish line might just be the excuse we give in order to experience the steps that take us there. It's the chase, the pursuit, and so relax, you are here, reminds me that I'm in the thick of the good stuff. Ed Helms, at a commencement speech, quotes his character from the office, Andy Bernard, as saying, I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you've actually left them.
Starting point is 00:13:14 Well, this might just be that reminder. Grow to something you've yet to become, but with everything you have, appreciate who you are now. Respect that finish line, but cherish the race. When the time comes, and we've reached the end of our days, reflecting back, I think there are two successes that I'll identify as I'm reminiscing. First, I don't want to look back and feel regret for a lack of courage. I don't want to wish that I'd been bolder in pursuit of my dreams. No, I want to accomplish the unthinkable, capture the unobtainable.
Starting point is 00:14:06 But second, I also don't want, when reflecting back, to realize that I never looked around and enjoyed the ride, that I didn't know what I had the entire time, that when things felt like a lot, I forgot that a lot was in and of itself a gift. So when the pressures of life seem to consume us, the expectations overwhelm us, the story disappoints us. Let's find the time to pause, take a breath, and relax because it just doesn't. This might be life's way of telling us. We're here.
Starting point is 00:15:06 So we talk a lot about mindset on this podcast, obviously. But taking care of yourself is more than just mind. It's the entire package. It's mind, body, and soul. And that's why I've integrated today's sponsor, Cowboy Colostrum, into my daily routine. It's true first-day-hole colostrum from American grass-fed cows designed to support gut health and digestion.
Starting point is 00:15:28 That has no artificial flavors or sweeteners. And the new cookies and cream flavor has been incredibly easy to just throw into a shake, take on the road with me. It's efficient, taste good, all the stuff. So that's when my go-to. Now you can try the new cookies and cream flavor for yourself. Now, that's certainly a bold statement. And as I've gotten older, I've kind of learned to avoid speaking in absolutes. Nothing in life is 100% guaranteed.
Starting point is 00:16:24 So why am I so confident about that message? Everything you need is right there in the room always. Well, because I believe in the premise, you're always one decision away from a totally different life. And when we're stuck or lost or looking for change, we need not some crazy, grandiose answer to be delivered from the heavens. We need to find the little action, the tiny movement that's going to set us.
Starting point is 00:16:57 forth on the journey. We need this snowflake that will become this snowball that will become the avalanche. It seems like so much of life comes down to simply outsmarting our biology. It's like the panic or the emotive defense mechanisms that come into play when we're sad or lost or feeling unsure or down. And it's an absolute superpower to know that when we're in those moments, what we need is an arm's length away. It's a perspective shift away. And I look over my shoulder and I see tons of examples here, right? With my keynote speaking, there was a period where it just wasn't quite clicking,
Starting point is 00:17:40 where I knew I wasn't performing the way I could. And I was going back and forth on solutions, trying different things, experimenting, not quite getting there, feeling overwhelmed. It's like, why can't I recreate there what I'm doing here? And then one email to the person who's now my speaking coach, and I had my light bulb moments. Like everything started to transform. Or my YouTube channel, right? It's up, down, up, down, everything in between.
Starting point is 00:18:11 And like I've said before, there are times where a simple thumbnail change. And that video explodes, causing the channel to explode. That's not a big, grandiose thing. I can always change a thumbnail. That answer is sitting in the palm of my phone. hand with my phone. Or an example that falls on the more human side of things, right? There are times where, you know, I felt like I've neglected the relationships in my life
Starting point is 00:18:36 in order to really focus on my creativity and my businesses. Sometimes that, you know, mentally doesn't feel good. And I can pick up the phone, start a group chat, plan a dinner with some friends, and feel like my cup has been refilled. But it's like you don't have to have it all figured out, which is great news because you never will. You just need to start creating momentum. There's nothing more powerful than going to bed at night feeling like you are moving towards something meaningful. Again, doesn't mean you need to have it all figured out, but in a world where progress largely equates to happiness,
Starting point is 00:19:19 It means you are actively manufacturing momentum. That's everything. You know, I often think of my friend's son, Wyatt. He's become sort of a metaphor for that childlike instinct that seems to be the answer for so much, right? He's wandering around the living room, just reusing everything as it suits him. The world is not as it, quote unquote, is.
Starting point is 00:19:47 It's as he sees it. up a TV remote becomes a microphone, finds a blanket, becomes the roof for the fort he's building in the living room. Everything is a solution to what he needs. Everything is a color that can go on his canvas. I think that's the place we need to be. That's the idea. The next brush stroke is in the room.
Starting point is 00:20:13 Maybe it's a phone call, an email. Maybe it's a walk outside, a stroll to the gym. Maybe it's literally cleaning your room, your apartment, or house. Maybe it's one social media post. Maybe it's a DM. Maybe it's 10 pages of a book. Maybe it's watching a how-to YouTube video. Maybe it's signing up for a class, meeting up with someone to talk business, life, or anything in between.
Starting point is 00:20:39 See, we spend so much time trying to get to the moon that we overlook the staircase it'll take to get there. Oh, and surprise, step one is at your feet. I don't think miracle. Think momentum. It's very hard to slow down an object in motion. So stop beating yourself up for not having all the answers and simply keep moving. Don't feel down for not having all the solutions and be proud you're walking towards them. Remember, everything you need is in the room, always.
Starting point is 00:21:18 Remember what's yours to control and what's not what must be let go. Remember that nothing is so futile as attempting to move the immovable or change the unchangeable. Remember that your greatest strength is focusing your time, talents, and efforts, exhausting your energy on that which you can control. And sometimes this distinction hurts. But to fail to see it is to shackle oneself to delusion. Right? You can complain about the weather all day, but to complain about it, to focus on it, to be stuck in it is not going to change it.
Starting point is 00:22:22 Your time would be better suited looking at how to adjust yourself to it. And that's what life repeatedly tells us. there's plenty we aren't happy about plenty we wish we could change but to stay there in that space is to forfeit your greatness your strength why because there is so much you can control so much you can do you can always position yourself to succeed but that calls for first separating what's yours and what's not There are people I wish were different. There are situations I prayed were alterable. There are outcomes that are given without my asking.
Starting point is 00:23:15 That's just life. And a losing mentality is to fight that, to feel anger or resentment at the people that let you down. Why couldn't they be how I want them to be? It's to dwell on the situation that occurred despite your wishes. Why couldn't it have just happened my way? It's to refuse to acknowledge the outcomes that have already materialized. Why couldn't it just have evolved differently?
Starting point is 00:23:48 All that, as hard as it is to see, is embracing a mentality of victimhood. It's walking down a path that has no desirable destination in store for you. When you accept the unchangeable, you then become the architect. of your reality. Sure, people, places, and outcomes weren't always the best, but now you ask, how can I navigate around it,
Starting point is 00:24:17 or better yet, use it to my advantage. It is, to use the famous metaphor, not shaking your fist at the wind, but building sails for your boat, creating a path to take you somewhere new. So let the energy, the time, and emotion that's wasted on the immovable dissolve. The question worth asking is where do you most want to be and how can you get there? And while those details outside the scope of your control can feel like a bottomless gap in your way,
Starting point is 00:24:58 I promise that what's around you is enough to build a bridge over it. There's enough there for you to find your way. So long as we learn to separate the gap from the bridge, the details from the solutions, when all you see is why you can't go or how it can't be solved or how impossible something is, it's not that you are looking at an unfortunate truth, it's that you are looking at the wrong supporting evidence. when we stop seeing the details and outside circumstances as the deciders of fate we win. When we place our eyes upon the controllable, when we step into what is ours to move and shape and transform,
Starting point is 00:25:52 we finally see that the journey to something bigger is not only possible, it is inevitable. My mornings are when I do some of my best work. And Maud, today's sponsor, has become a huge part of that routine. I'll wake up, head to the coffee shop, sit down, lock in, and get to work. And what Maud does is they prescribe a medaphanal drink that's designed to help with your energy, your focus, and your alertness. Like I said, locking that into my daily routine has been huge. Starting point is 00:26:52 as well as free shipping again that's mod dot com use code eddy at checkout reference their website for any safety guidelines and uh thank you to mod and thank you for watching and being a part of this we don't know true silence and this came to light a few weeks ago during a trip with family and friends. We stayed in a cabin out in the middle of nowhere but an hour from Zion National Park in Utah. And Ashley, a friend of the family, mentioned that even though our little sanctuary was quiet
Starting point is 00:27:33 compared to our normal everyday lives, the airways were still inundated with noise. And so we sat there for a little while. paying attention and listening in on, you know, all the sounds that surrounded us. You know, planes as they went overhead, it seemed like every 10 minutes or so. And I realized for the first time that even 10,000 feet up, you could hear a plane's engine echoing through the canyons.
Starting point is 00:28:07 Cars from the two-lane road out in the distance could be heard as if they were a few feet away. It was fascinating. Even while staying in a location as remote as ours, we weren't alone. We never experienced total silence. Apparently, there are only a few places in the world where this type of silence exists. Ashley briefly mentioned them, citing an article she'd recently come across. I just found the whole thing more and more interesting. It never dawned on me before.
Starting point is 00:28:42 You know, the extent to which noise and complexity surrounded us. My normal is one of chaos. Subtle chaos, sure, but chaos nonetheless. You may be wondering, you know, where am I going with this idea? Well, I found value in the understanding that we consistently operate in such an extreme level of commotion. Right? We've learned to navigate consistent noise penetrating our existence in our lives, but we haven't really learned how to separate ourselves from it.
Starting point is 00:29:26 There is always buzzing, humming, and shaking as we go about our day to day. We're so intertwined with our surroundings that even when we seek solitude, we're unable to totally remove ourselves or pull ourselves from the noise. And to me, that weekend was just an incredible reminder of the importance, the significance of remembering to separate ourselves from the world from time to time. The value of truly being alone with our thoughts, shielding ourselves from the externalities. It's not that we have to exist in total silence and solitude, somewhere like Northern Washington, which I believe is one of the locations. from the article Ashley cited as one of our quietest locations, it's more so that we must realize the world around us
Starting point is 00:30:24 is constantly seeking to inundate every thought with impressions and ideas and stories and other noise. The world around us is constantly seeking to influence. That's the million-dollar point. even when we don't realize it, we are navigating ideas, engines, and electronics. There is always something placed between who we are and what's most important to us. And it's imperative that we recognize that. See, peace will never fall out of the sky and land at our doorsteps.
Starting point is 00:31:08 It must be sought out. The curtains covering who we truly are must. be pulled back. And without this concentrated effort, life, you know, simply moves us down the stream of life. Well, we assume it was our own swimming that created the change. Control requires separation from the every day. And so here's to making time to truly separate ourselves from a dozen matters so that we can focus on what does.
Starting point is 00:31:44 to identifying the noise so that we can, when necessary, remove ourselves from it. It is by knowing true silence that we truly know ourselves. And that's a relationship that is invaluable.
