Your World Within Podcast by Eddie Pinero - The Power of the Present Moment

Episode Date: May 5, 2020

In todays episode, I take a look at the power of the present moment and its impact on our life trajectories.  Being that both the past and the future are mere fabrications, "right now" is our most po...werful weapon.  In fact, greatness is not achieved when most think it is.  As Brian Moran states in his book The 12 Week Year, "It is not when Phelps wins the medal that he achieves greatness, it is all the moments leading up to that point. Winning the medal was simply recognition." If the present moment is truly the essence of life, perhaps there's benefit to looking at it from a different angle. Join me on today's episode in doing just that!

Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to Your World Within Daily. I'm Eddie Panero. And in this episode, we're going to talk about the power of the present moment. How greatness is defined, not when you stand on the podium or grab the trophy, but right now. All we have is right now. The present moment that you're living in. In fact, the other day, my good friend Stephen Sully pushed open the door to the living room sprinted in and said, Eddie, you're not going to believe this, but our past and our
Starting point is 00:00:48 future are only thoughts. Like, everything's make believe except the immediate. I'm like, wow, I guess I knew that, but when you put it that way, it's pretty crazy to think about. You know, everything is made up. Everything's manufactured in our head except right now. And the reason that's important, And the reason I want to talk about it is last week I finished reading Brian Moran's book, the 12 week year, where, you know, he talks about planning the importance of setting achievable goals and touches on something that I, you know, it's an area that I can improve upon, is really structuring, segmenting, and holding yourself accountable for your project plan. But there's also some stuff at the beginning.
Starting point is 00:01:41 around mindset that I really enjoyed. And it was the idea he talks about Michael Phelps, right? And he says, you know, people at the Olympics saw him break world records. They saw him get out of the pool and hold up a medal and they said, wow, he just became great. He just became the best Olympian of all time. And Brian's point is that's not true. He was just recognized as the greatest Olympian of all time. He became the greatest Olympian of all time a long time before that,
Starting point is 00:02:23 doing the things that most people didn't want to do, getting up when it's dark, passing on the junk food, being disciplined, working harder than anyone around him. That's when he became great. And yeah, let's clap because today he's recognized. But greatness was made a long time ago. It was made in what was the present moment again and again and again in the dark when there was no one looking and there was no applause.
Starting point is 00:02:56 And the reason that's important is because right now, listening to this, you are in the present. You are building a foundation for greatness. This is when greatness is made. Not when you look down the road and imagine the recognition, not when you get the job, not when you get the promotion, not when you meet the love of your life, not when you get that business up and running. No, right now.
Starting point is 00:03:24 Right now, as you sit and ask yourself what you're going to do about it, what you're going to do about bringing those things to fruition. You are looking out right now, like you're, always at this fork in the road where you can go from average to extraordinary. We all are every day. Do we want to have an average day or an extraordinary day? Do we want to do what's easy or do we want to do what's meaningful? These are all decisions we make in the present moment. The past is gone. The future has not arrived yet. Your gift is right now. Your gift is this existence. And the question will always be. It will perpetually be what are you doing with it?
Starting point is 00:04:09 Are you maximizing it or not? The same message from Brian Moran, right, the power of the present moment, the same message from Malcolm Gladwell, the 10,000 hour rule. All those little things you do behind the curtains without validation, right, that seem uneventful, little acts of courage, little components of discipline, capitalizing on the present, even when it feels like that reward or that podium is so far away that you can't see it. That's what makes all the difference. All right.
Starting point is 00:04:49 If you enjoy this podcast, if you get value from it, please take a second. Rate, subscribe. It helps me get it out to the world. I appreciate that. So go forth. Cherish the present moment. It's all we get. Go create your magic.
