Your World Within Podcast by Eddie Pinero - Unlock Your Inner Strength | Inspirational Speeches For Developing A Positive Mindset

Episode Date: October 29, 2024

Hi All, In this episode, I dive into one of my favorite topics—bettering the mind and improving our mindset. Over the years, I’ve found that the way we think shapes everything in our lives, and it...'s incredible how much power we have just by shifting our perspective. Throughout this episode, I share personal lessons, short stories, and anecdotes that have helped me sharpen my own thinking, and hopefully, they can do the same for you. We often hear about the importance of "mindset," but what does it actually look like in our daily lives? That’s what I explore here. Whether it's learning to see obstacles as opportunities, reframing a challenge as a gift, or finding the silver lining in tough situations, we always have a choice in how we view things. This episode is all about recognizing that gift of perspective and using it to not only survive but thrive in every moment. I’ve poured a lot of heart into these stories because they’re experiences that have truly shaped who I am. I hope you’ll walk away with a sense of clarity and empowerment, ready to embrace the challenges in your own life with a sharpened, more focused mind. Let’s grow together! Cheers, Eddie

And this is a book essentially about how exponential growth requires a reframing, a change to the way we think about ourselves and the journeys that we're on. And in it, Sullivan states, and I'm paraphrasing, the things that brought you to the current moment will keep you there. Powerful.
Starting point is 00:01:02 In a lens through which I hadn't really looked at my personal growth or journey before, I've always thought of progress as a stacking of repeatable habits over and over again. And while this may not be wrong, Sullivan and Hardy make a pretty effective argument that it's only part of this story. See, if you show up and you do the exact same, thing every day, you'll get growth, no doubt, but it will be linear in nature. Exponential growth requires instances of self-recreation, of evolution as we make our way forward. It's a continuous pushing aside of things we don't need to be doing and a simultaneous deep dive into the things
Starting point is 00:01:53 that bring us the most return. They use the example of the famous McClain. Galangelo, who is known for his paintings, right? And then some time goes by and he produces a 17-foot statue of David. And then he pivots again, as he's commissioned by Pope Julius II, to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and then moves on to direct even larger projects. And each example here is a 10x evolution. Certainly not a road that could have been mapped out from day one. How would he ever have known. But it's a series of sometimes even lateral moves.
Starting point is 00:02:40 Instances of following your intuition, your strength, doing what felt right, instances of breaking down and building back up the self. Same foundation of talent and skill, same general competency, but he continuously stacked
Starting point is 00:02:58 new and enhanced versions of himself on top of one of it. another. Sometimes reminders hit you exactly when you need to hear them. You know, personally, I loved everything about this message. The idea that there should be more emphasis and courage, for that matter, on one's 10x trajectory, multiplying my strengths on taking the value I bring to the world and putting it through some stressors, seeing what comes out the other side. Because the danger in playing it's safe, which the second we stop being intentional about things is ultimately what we tend to do, it's that you don't experience that transformation.
Starting point is 00:03:48 It was not safe, using the same metaphor for Michelangelo, a painter, to create David. The safe thing would have been to keep doing the same thing every day. but you have to trust your skill, your heart, and your intuition. There's immense value in all of us understanding that, and to some degree emulating it. There's value in all of us finding our David. Stepping into that, which is a little unclear, makes us a little nervous, but at the same time allows us to take the skills and talent, the parts of us that are most meaningful and inject them into the world in a big,
Starting point is 00:04:33 way, which would never have been possible had we stayed the same. The things that brought you to the current moment will keep you there. Well, here's defining your 20%, that which matters, and using it as the template with which you paint. Not getting so stuck in the routine that you forget, the routine is a means, not an end. You have the ability in your own unique way. to change the world around you. The question is, do you have the courage to reach for it? If you remain calm in the midst of great chaos, it's the surest guarantee that it will eventually subside, Julie Andrews.
Starting point is 00:05:48 One of the most powerful things about intentionally immersing yourself in difficult situations, is that it prepares you for the way. the inevitable adversity that will come your way when it's unexpected, unplanned. The obstacles life places before all of us. That's why I so often draw a line from physical fitness and athletics to the real world. Doing difficult training, for me, particularly endurance training or interval training, is that creates a level of exhaustion. I tend not to encounter anywhere else, right?
Starting point is 00:06:33 It's a phenomenal practice at separating out what must be done in the moment from how we feel. It uncouples those two things. It's taming chaos in a controlled environment that improves our ability to handle stress out in the world. And what keeps pulling me in is when you're in it, going from set to set, 45 minutes straight with no rest, there are these particular moments where your heart rate's elevated, your body is fatigued, you're pushing your physical limits, and under a different set of circumstances, you'd stop.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Maybe you'd take a breather because that's what makes sense to do. But this is what's powerful, right? In those moments, you learn to float above all of that. It's excess. It's noise. It doesn't matter, right? You're separating anything that isn't the question, what's next? You don't have to perform any miracles or break any records. No, only find a way to calmly engage in one exercise after the next. One step after another. Your job is to not stop. And again, this is a microcosm of what we deal with. in the world when the world is chaotic and stressful when our minds are worried about what's in front of us because we aren't sure how much longer we can sustain what's
Starting point is 00:08:16 happening in the present moment that's when we get worked up in frantic sometimes erratic in our decision-making but this reminds you you can be stronger than your environment your circumstances you can say no to the chaos that's attempting to pull you in. As Victor Frankel has spoken, you may not have control over your circumstance, but you always have control over your added. What does this mean? Well, it is the incentive, the green light to step forward. You don't need to think about how you wish you felt. You don't need to think about how you might feel 10 minutes from now. No, The goal is breathe and consider simply what must be done.
Starting point is 00:09:20 This idea, it translates beautifully when something goes wrong at work. When a relationship becomes fractured, when you feel slighted by life, the temptation is to let it all consume. But if you're able to breathe in, to compose yourself and focus only on what needs to happen next, there is nothing that can hold you back. When you don't relinquish your control to outside circumstances, you have everything you need to effectively navigate through them. Nothing matters. Nothing but your ability to carry out the task at hand. To conquer that adversity that is emotion in the midst of difficulty. Right? Simplicity as the saying goes is the
Starting point is 00:10:18 ultimate sophistication and it doesn't get simpler than this breathe execute and you will find your way home what you're hearing is Hardy fiber cement siding living up to its reputation as the siding that handles hail impact with ease James Hardy knows how important a reputation is especially when you're a contractor that's why Hardy siding withstands severe weather better than vinyl siding with styles to match its strength. So you can be sure you're providing your clients with the best. Protect your reputation with exterior products by James Hardy.
Starting point is 00:11:15 It's been almost two years since I first read it. And still the main idea from the book, The Courage to be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi deeply resonates with me. The idea that being happy is essentially dependent upon the courage to be disliked. And at first, it might not seem like the desire. to whatever be related. Happiness and being disliked, an odd pair, maybe even seemingly counterintuitive.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Until you realize that happiness comes from such a personal, authentic place that allowing the expectations of others to chart your course means that you'd probably never arrived there. You have to do what's best for you. And doing what's best for you is going to create a divide somewhere. Why? Because everything creates a divide. Everything is subjective. I knew I wanted to dive into this topic, but wasn't sure the best way to do it. So the other
Starting point is 00:12:30 morning I was trying to think of like an objective truth, something that no one could disagree with, was sitting on my balcony and pointed up towards this guy. I thought, let's start there. Simple as it gets. Hard to refute that, right? I am pointing. up. And I remembered we're floating on a globe, a giant sphere. There is no up. Up is perspective. Everything is perspective. What's the difference between one and two? Some might say it's one. But technically there's infinity between one and two. You can have infinite decimals. One point 9-99 goes on forever, right? Point being, there's subjectivity
Starting point is 00:13:14 when we drill down into even the seemingly obvious truth. Now, the value here is not to go running around, arguing with everyone that there's infinity between one and two. No, there are certain aspects of society that we must adhere to, otherwise we couldn't function together. Right? But it's simply to show that you following the path you believe is right for you.
Starting point is 00:13:39 you cannot be rightfully assessed by someone else. It's to place trust in your internal personal judgment. And when people don't understand your infinity, that doesn't mean it's wrong. And by the way, I don't have blinders on to the fact that it's hard to do. In many ways, it goes right up against our lizard brain biological wiring. right? We're fitting and equates to survival, and ostracization becomes a death sentence, but we are, fortunately, beyond that. It's in our interest now, and in fact, I think the courage
Starting point is 00:14:18 to be disliked is a critical lifelong journey. I'm better at this than I was 10 years ago, no question, but do I still have a ways to go? Absolutely. There are still things I'm working on every day to let go of. I remember reading in Jefferson's biography about how it was so hard for him to be demonized in the press all the time that it almost dissuaded him from jumping back into politics before his presidential run. And being attacked is a hard thing. But ultimately, he let his beliefs and personal values drive him, his ambition in a lot of ways, and came to see the scrutiny as a cost, decided it was worth the price. Or like I use this all the time, take one of the biggest pop stars of our day, say Justin Bieber. You look at what people are saying about him in the
Starting point is 00:15:12 comments of his video. A lot of it's wonderful. Some of it's great, sure, but some of it's awful. And that's just the price of anyone putting themselves out there. And again, you think of an inverse scenario. Imagine if he didn't. Imagine if he limited himself or didn't dive fully into what he does because he knew some folks out there would have some bad things to say. Now, we are, for the most part, neither famous politicians nor pop stars, but our worlds contain the same elements at different scale. There are things we're all scared to do or say because of how it will be received. There are parts of ourselves that we repress because we don't know what the feedback will be.
Starting point is 00:16:02 We're all scared to fail in some capacity because of how it will look. or what others will say about it, which is why being disliked is courageous. As Aristotle has said, the only way to avoid criticism is to do nothing, to say nothing and be nothing. The opposite of being fully, truly yourself, is becoming the manifestation of that quote.
Starting point is 00:16:34 It's never pushing yourself, never seeing what you're capable of, never exploring or executing on your dream. dreams, your ambitions. Now this is speculation, but if I were a gambling man, I'd place everything I own on the idea that when we're old looking back on our lives, we'll spend less time thinking about who criticized us or disagreed with us than how we spent our days and who we shared them with. Did we live in a way that made us happy that was meaningful?
Starting point is 00:17:08 Because on a sphere everyone believes they are pointing up. But in actuality none of us are. We're all merely navigating the subjective universe behind our eyes. So why not truly explore? Why not capture the magic out there before the hourglass runs out of sand? It's hard, sometimes it hurts, it takes all we have, it requires courage. But I think we'll all come to find that the decision to live fully in our authenticity, regardless of whether others agreed, disagreed, or were indifferent, was the best decision
Starting point is 00:17:54 that we ever made. I'm going to make everything around me beautiful. That will be my life. Elsie DeWold. Changing for the better is not about the creation of miracles. It's about choosing to see the ones that already exist. Life is hard, but coincidentally, hard things tend to be the gatekeepers to the important one. We are let in when we bring ourselves finally to shake hands with
Starting point is 00:18:56 and embrace the very things we once saw as the problem. As Ryan Holiday has famously put it, the obstacle tends to be the way. How funny, how counterintuitive, how upside down life can see. But I think that's it. Sometimes it's not even that we're looking at the wrong things. So we're looking at the right things the wrong way. Avoiding the call to step further into the world and deeper into ourselves. Terrified of scraping our knees on the climb, we burden ourselves with the much more painful choice of staying at the bottom of the mountain and looking up.
Starting point is 00:19:52 But the scars we've collected and will continue to collect on the way up, they do not make you less than. No, they are what make you beautiful. You see yourself and those scars is imperfect. I see someone who has lived, who has taken risks, fallen, and bounced back. I see character and wisdom and elegance and boldness. In an imperfect world, those quote-unquote flaws and scars may, funny enough, just be the closest thing to perfection we'll ever experience. It's from our courage to step out, our willingness to crack that we flourish.
Starting point is 00:20:44 Living necessarily includes a deterioration over time. But a deterioration of the external, because the internal, the soul, it stays young. It's underneath that forever crumbling world around us that we find the deep. divine. It is because of our scars, not to spite them, that we grow our wings. They aren't to be feared but coveted. You are more because of the mistakes you made, the challenges you face, the adjustments you had to see through. And I believe our value increases with each tear and break, resembling the Japanese art of Kinsugi where a pot that breaks
Starting point is 00:21:44 and is put back together with golden lacquer holds more value than the original unblemished piece. See, Wolf says, I'm going to make everything around me beautiful. And I think this simply calls for an optical adjustment. A shift to. in relations between things and how you perceive those things. Me, I don't want the whitest, cleanest, newest shoes.
Starting point is 00:22:23 As far as I'm concerned, there's very little beauty to preserve there. I want shoes with worn souls from the miles and miles they carried me. holes from the distance I had to walk to find the people who add joy to my life. Cracks from running in the rain while the rest of the world stayed inside. I want my imperfections to show that I lived while I was here. So from now on, let's stop conflating perfect and beautiful. Perfect is no skin in the game. Perfect is standing forever in the doorway looking out.
Starting point is 00:23:18 Perfect is dreaming and wishing and hoping, but never leaving, because leaving is where our vision brushes up against a reality we may see as too. No, we want not perfect but beautiful. We want scars and flaws. and flaws and lessons and loss, because from those things as difficult as they may be, we're born again. Imperfection is life, and life is beautiful.
Starting point is 00:24:01 So here's to more scuffed shoes and scraped knees, to walking an imperfect yet beautiful road. A cheat code in life is understanding the significance of getting to one. Because if you can get one, you can absolutely get two. And if you can get two, you can get three, four, five, five thousand, five hundred thousand or five million. Once you realize that something is possible, you're no longer the same person. you once were. Your hands need not be held to the sky as though the universe is going to drop
Starting point is 00:25:16 something into them. No, you've cracked the code. You have the info. And the burden has now been placed directly onto your shoulders. That little question, is this possible, dissipates. Getting to one was your proof of that. And then the obvious accompanying question, now what are you going to do about it? What are you going to do? Because the race isn't to one million, it's to one. One is the power. One is the reassurance. One is everything you need. If you can sell one painting, you can sell 50,000 painting. If you can make one three-pointer, you can make thousands of three-pointers. If you can create one genius marketing video that goes viral, you can create hundreds, thousands, millions. Again, the evidence, you got one. Anything beyond one is procedural.
Starting point is 00:26:25 It's a testing of methods. It's becoming relentless in your pursuit to repeat the process with the pieces at your disposal. But make no mistake, those pieces are there, everything you need is there so long as you get to one. I had to recently break through to this realization. Like so many of us, I'm an ambitious person. I love the game. I want to add value to more people, reach more listeners, generate more revenues, scale impact, all that stuff, of course.
Starting point is 00:26:59 But for a while, I just couldn't figure out how. I became almost disillusioned. What am I doing wrong? Maybe. What if maybe do I? I dare say, do I dare even think for a second that I've gone as far as I can go? But was ultimately rescued. Rescued by the realization that I was asking the world for things I didn't have instead of leveraging
Starting point is 00:27:27 what I did. I needed to separate the value I possessed from the logistics that would transport it. Because, and this is what we forget, I've already performed my miracle. added value to one person, and if you can add value to one, why not 10, why not 10 million, it's not a product issue. It's a scaling question. The car works. Figure out how to get it to the racetrack. The tool is effective. Now get it into the hands of the builders. You see the difference, the confidence that comes with that? Instead of doubting all that you bring to the world, asking yourself if more is possible, you say, yeah, of course it is, because I've already done it,
Starting point is 00:28:16 here is my proof. Now what's around me that I can use to deliver it? How can I try things? Reposition things, figure out how to scale and get further, but I know it's possible. So many of us have already gotten to one. We're adding value. We're doing what we believe in. But we're asking the wrong question. we're still asking whether more is possible. It is. The burden is just on you to bring it to fruition. The burden is on you to find a way.
Starting point is 00:28:54 To scale the value contained in your one thing. And by the way, if you haven't arrived at one yet, buckle up. Getting to one was one of the best periods of my life. finding your value proposition, enjoying the process, exploring, finding that intersection of value and personal contentment, you'll eventually arrive there. But remember, for you, the goal is not one million, it's one, one idea that works, one approach that lights you up,
Starting point is 00:29:29 one action that opens your eyes to the upside, that makes the world better to those around you. When you've found your one thing, when you know what makes a difference, then you move on to the stage. scaling chapter, right? Then how do we turn one into one million? But there are two different questions. So remember that moving forward. No matter how stuck you feel, if you have one, you simultaneously have a little seed capable of producing infinity. It just needs attention.
Starting point is 00:30:02 Trust yourself to work through the logistics because that's all it is. transform the if into how and start building that staircase straight to the moon.
