Sitting in my office, dimly lit, head in my hands, disappointed.
Mostly in myself for letting the opportunity escape, because I had it.
I could have held on.
Instead, I watched it slip away, and in frustration, leaned back in my chair, looked up,
Notice a little rectangle of light subtly bouncing around on the wall.
It had made its way from a small gap in the curtains, completely breaking the uniformity of darkness.
Its presence, signaling just how much exists outside our periphery during those tough moments,
reminding me how much our darkest days only remain so long as we refuse to let light in,
and how periods of longing are unavoidable.
But whether we lay down because of them or stack and stand upon them is up to us.
Now, I don't know why what we need is hardest to grasp during our times of greatest vulnerability.
But I do know that we are capable of standing up, of lighting a match amidst the shadows of life.
I do know we are strong enough to take the curveballs and the complexity and not just exist with them,
but transform them into our stepping stones.
So often the endings we didn't think we wanted become the beginning.
We didn't know we needed.
It's not about being perfect.
It's about getting up when your soul feels heavy and your body is weak.
Making your way to the window, opening the curtains, and letting the light in.
The key to maintaining perspective to never relinquishing your control or composure
is to understand that there is value in the seemingly
value us that when we most want to hang our heads and retreat to a place of sorrow, we must
hold on to the fact that somewhere underneath it all is the reason you will not only move on,
but emerge victorious. Rise from the ashes of despair stronger than you ever were.
When life turns out the light and shakes your world at the foundation,
It isn't to check your progress, but to remind you that you can be the light, you can withstand
the rumbling underneath you, that we will never completely mitigate adversity.
But we were given perhaps the greatest gift of all, the power to decide what will become
of it.
Of course they don't understand your vision.
Of course it means nothing to them.
That's how the world works.
People need to see results, not ideas.
They need to see to believe.
In fact, everything you dream of believe in,
it needs to be carved into existence.
And the important thing worth noting here
is that it's not personal.
It's not a reflection of you
or your talent or your potential, the differentiator in life,
will always be one's ability to turn ideas into things.
You have that power within yourself,
literally to change the world as we know it.
That's not a question.
It's not even far-fetched.
You're capable.
But we need to spend less time feeling like we're owed something
for that exhausted energy.
The world is a tough place.
It rewards value.
And sometimes it takes way longer than we like to see a return
on that investment.
As James Clear mentions, you put an ice cube in a room
at zero degrees, and you gradually turn up the temperature.
You won't see it even begin to transform
until you hit the 32 degree mark.
That's not when the work began.
It's not indicative of everything,
but that's when the effects of the work become visible.
And getting to that point, it's one of life's greatest challenges.
It's hard to give everything for something you can't collect when you go to bed at night.
It's hard to be that patient.
The only way to break through the noise to create something is to fully, wholeheartedly
believe in yourself.
Believe in yourself to the extent that you can detach from the criticism.
Detach from the facade of perfect lives on social media.
and the expectations you're immersed in,
this isn't a race between you and the world.
It's a battle of will between you and the voice
that says there is no 32 degree mark.
Removing that negativity,
it's just as important as focusing on the positive.
Dreams live at that intersection of belief and action.
And I've always wondered what people think they're gaining
by shouting about how important they are,
the things they're doing,
or their plans.
That does nothing.
You need to know what you're doing, and that's all.
Words mean nothing, ideas or empty, respect is earned
by adding actual value, by making a difference.
So reallocate that energy into the gift
you are giving to the people around you.
That is a feat best accomplished with your mouth,
close, and your eyes open.
Every day, every day,
Every action unnoticed, effort unseen, it stacks up to create something that will truly change the world.
Words like crazy, impossible, and irrational, they all have something very specific in common.
They suggest an improbability of outcome.
They mock scenarios that don't fit well with the standard idea of the world and how it
should work. Because, well, people tend to view life as it is, not as it could be. But if there's one
thing you need to remember, it's this. Every single thing in your life was at one point crazy.
It was at one point improbable, irrational, or absurd, but this changes. Because at certain points
along the way, people were brave enough to look up and acknowledge that reality is forever evolving.
A human being in a metal object going 60 miles per hour was crazy.
Flying from destination to destination through clouds was crazy.
Communicating instantaneously across the world was crazy.
If your idea or your dreams aren't crazy, you're simply thinking too small.
You need crazy.
The world needs crazy.
See, change will always.
be crazy. Because it requires us to break away from what is. It means you're shaking the world
and declaring, yes, this is possible. Yes, this can be real. And the world reacts accordingly.
The previous standards raised just a little and you open the door for what's to come.
Crazy is what shapes the best part of everyday life. If you're going to run from anything,
It should be from the boundaries we unnecessarily create and into the arms of crazy.
What is the complex, but an accumulation of that which is simple?
What are big things, if not just a multitude of little things?
There's comfort in the understanding that all we have in life, all there is, is simplicity.
easy to understand pieces.
It's just that sometimes we stack them so high
that they start to take a new shape.
But like Greg McKeown references
in his book Essentialism,
the power isn't always in acquiring answers.
You already have them.
They're in front of you.
The power is in cutting away the things that don't need,
removing all that stands between you and your ideal existence.
And I think that's one of life's great misunderstandings.
We don't need to find more.
We need to remove that excess until we're face to face with what matters.
And to adopt this principle, it's nothing short of liberating.
Chaos, confusion, disorder,
they don't imply that you lack the right things.
They suggest you haven't stripped life of the wrong things.
You have not simplified.
A thousand miles is intimidating when you look at it holistically.
It's a long journey.
But it's just a collection of steps and well, shouldn't we find solace in the fact that anyone
can take one step?
It's not a game of complexity.
It's a game of understanding what's in front of you.
And what's in front of you is always manageable.
So much of our stress stems from forgetting what that journey is made of.
Whether it's a change in career, mastery of an art, some kind of personal transformation,
the result we want.
When looking at it from the starting line, it's too complex to understand too many pieces stacked up.
So let's break it down.
Let's find the foundation.
What's really there?
What are the one, two, three things we need to do?
What is that golden question?
What matters?
If you lose sight of that, then you will stumble through life.
I've learned this.
I've lived it.
The time I take to myself every day is invaluable to me
because I ask myself those two questions.
What matters?
And what are the simple steps?
I need to take. What can I remove? I was talking about this during an interview this week,
my personal growth. And one of the most important aspects has been the understanding and the zeroing
in on what's important. I used to take so much pride in composing the background music to these
speeches, end to end. I used to love to be able to say, I did it all. That was so I thought the
great differentiator. But ultimately, I learned to take a step back and ask, what matters?
What do you care about?
It's the storytelling that I love.
It's the impact.
And let's be real.
No one cares who wrote the background music.
It's holistically.
How does the piece make you feel?
Right?
And this understanding allowed me to cut away.
License the music.
Save two days a week, acquire clarity,
and realize my goal is not to be Mozart.
My journey is to be one of the great communicators.
storytellers of our time, and if a day goes by where I'm not taking a little step towards that,
it's the wrong move. Small example in the grand scheme of things, but right on point. It's the power
in understanding what matters that makes a difference that allows you to grow, evolve. And I'm
confident that this not only applies to long-term pursuits, but also our challenging times,
the dark moments, the periods of uncertainty and discontent. Same concept. Where do you want to be?
And how do you get there? What's the simple thing you can do to close that gap? Because you are
never helpless. You can always do something. And my friends, those little somethings ultimately
evolve into everything. And when we put our phone away, step beyond the
noise, spend time with ourselves, we can see how much of life is running in place.
Stacking and stacking pieces that aren't even part of the masterpiece we're trying to assemble.
If you want answers, start with the understanding that they're buried under mountains of things you don't need.
So cut away.
Cut away the people and places and things that convolut your soul.
Convalute your story cut away the exhaustion of time that provides no value in return
Cut away the thoughts that make life more complex than your journey from where you are to where you'd like to be
As you stand right now
You have everything you need and
There's nothing greater than that nothing more powerful than that understanding
so why not
Step outside the complexity that you've manufactured that you're living in.
Into a world of clarity, simplicity.
Capture what matters.
The same is never extraordinary.
It's never remarkable or memorable.
We'll never be talked or written about.
So why then is it so frequently sought after?
What compels us to wander down this path of familiarity?
The same path covered up with the footprints of millions who have already been there before you,
who have done it before, who've been deceived by it before.
Following the footsteps of the majority, it guarantees one thing.
That you will get what the majority has.
You'll get their comfort, their reassurance, their sense of.
belonging but that's half the deal because the path also comes with unanswered
questions it comes with never knowing what's possible or could have been for your
potential see being the same is like ibuprofen it addresses the symptom not the
root cause it fulfills an immediate need but like a dwindling flame you'll see
more and more every day that it's not capable
of keeping the room lit.
The same means you didn't ask yourself what's right.
You ask the world around you.
And contrary to what most believe,
these answers are not congruent.
You can't follow the crowd and follow your heart.
You can't be what's popular and be what's true to yourself.
You can't be the same and be significant.
If you want to achieve,
Think differently.
Stop waiting in lines for things you don't want.
They will not bring you fulfillment.
They will not lift you up or set you apart or give you meaning.
Conformity has a ceiling.
And your potential does not.
This creates conflict.
It breeds missed opportunities and wasted potential.
If there is one thing I want,
want you to take away from this.
One thing.
Understand that the size of a crowd
is not proportional to the value
of the decision it's making.
Millions and millions can miss the very opportunity
that one person saw.
The whole world can turn away from the answer
that one person believed in.
To mindlessly join the march just to forfeit
opportunity to be that one person to bring something to the table to change the
world and redraw the lines around humanity that box so many of us in the
temporary comfort of belonging it's a false God it brings you nothing but away
from where you want to be from where you can be the goal is not to be them it's
to be yourself and in turn create a better world for them for your
for your dreams, for what's possible.
To get something different, you have to do something differently.
Don't conform to what's there, find what's not.
Don't listen to what's said, write new words to be spoken.
Don't follow yesterday's path.
Peave a new path for tomorrow.
What's standing?
It already exists.
Your treasure lies in the gaps.
gaps and blank spaces between them.
The things that people walk right by.
That's what you need.
That's what the world needs, even if they don't know it.
Look, you may not be understood now,
but like anything of value of true meaning,
that time will come.
Just at a cost, the majority is not willing to pay.
But if you are,
Your path will lead you past mediocrity, past conformity, past the average, and towards the best things this world has.
You didn't see what is, you saw what could be, and you created it.
And there is nothing more powerful than that.
It may be that our greatest gift in life is that we're always one decision away from transformation.
We're always one decision away from a new path with new experiences, new beliefs, new identity, one decision away from a totally different life.
It's almost incomprehensible.
That all the days leading up to now, everything we knew ourselves to be can be discarded and left with one swing of an axe gone.
What is more miraculous than that?
We live at the intersection of two imaginary worlds.
The past and the future.
Past is gone and essentially meaningless.
Yet as the provider of our identity, it still rules over us.
Our sense of who we are comes from our collection of past memories.
That imaginary world of yesterday, like the elephant tied to the chair with a rope.
It hasn't realized it's strong enough to break free.
It doesn't know that what confines him is not the rope.
but acceptance of a lie.
And that's what the past, that's what identity is, a lie.
We are not yesterday, we are right now.
And from the trivial things to the significant things,
we get wrapped up in that lie.
We overlook the gift of control we have over our future.
What does it mean to say, I'm not a mourning person?
That in your past you hadn't conditioned yourself to wake up early?
Okay.
What does it mean to say, oh, I love you?
let people walk all over me, that in your past you didn't stand up for yourself?
What does it mean to say I'm awkward or shy or I struggle with writing or running or public speaking?
So maybe you did.
But what does that have to do with right now?
What does that have to do with realizing the control you have over your life?
Because simply realizing you can disconnect from these narratives that they are not you is the superpower.
Realizing that calling yourself a bad student because you fail the test,
it's like never taking off your raincoat because it rained yesterday.
It's like, no, the sun is out, adapt.
And once you realize right now is the beginning of the rest of your life,
you can start making little changes.
Identify not who you were, but who you'd love to be.
And move towards it.
Read the power of habit and atomic habit
so that you can understand change isn't crazy,
or scary, it's moving little things in your life around so that they work for you, not against you.
Start waking up and thinking about not what has happened, but what can happen, not what can go wrong,
but what can go right. You are always one decision away from a totally different life
because you're always one decision away from change, from walking away from the narratives that you have accepted.
And so remember that. But remember it not just when things are fine.
Remember it when you're struggling, when you feel restless or uneasy, unsure, uninspired,
sad, angry, not content with the reflection in the mirror.
When you feel that negativity, you're not looking at what can be, you're looking at what
you have been.
And there's no room at the table for that distraction.
Not when you can reach out and start building something new.
When you can put on a new pair of shoes and walk down a different path, you are always
one decision away from a totally different life.
And that decision should be first and foremost to choose future over past.
Your next step over the last one, choose your ideal world and start building.
