What is it that you carry around?
The other day, I was walking into a breathwork session.
It's the third session I've been to, and every time I go,
it's this, you know, beautiful perspective shift, this necessary recalibration.
So it was super excited about this one.
My friend Lindsay Bell was putting it on, and at some point during the session,
she said these words.
just because you care doesn't mean you need to carry it.
And it might not have been the exact words, I'm paraphrasing,
but want to make sure I give credit where credits do.
And I'm laying there on my back, you know, focusing on breath
and, you know, couldn't really think at the moment.
But I said to myself, come back to this later,
because it sounds profound, and I bet you'll be glad that you did.
And I did come back to it later, and I'm very grateful that I did.
See, one of the things that I took from the breathwork session was calm.
It was managing my day-to-day, dealing with adversity, trying to keep it all together as I say yes
and step into more responsibility.
All of that in my world, it becomes tension.
Even when I don't realize it, you know, I carry it in my shirt.
shoulders, in my muscles, I get tension headaches, just carry it around physically.
And so, perfect example. I was almost late getting to the session. My car is telling me that
my backroot tire has 12 PSI. I'm putting air in it. It's deflating. I'm like, do I need to
patch it? You know, in worst case scenario, am I getting any tires? Is it okay? Is it going to explode
on the road, all these things, right? So I drive it almost flat to the place and I run in.
And, you know, it's just one thing among many on my mind, right? Eight videos to make, I have
a keynote speech and two days at a conference. All these things are sort of playing back and forth
in my brain. And I lay down, I notice my body is literally pulsating. And I don't mean literally
in the sense that's been, you know, hijacked recently.
I mean, literally, truly vibrating on the floor.
And I'm just having a conversation with myself.
It's like, you think there are obstacles and challenges out there.
This right here is your adversary.
This is something you need to solve for.
It almost felt like I was losing the plot, right?
It's like, this can't be the baseline I exist on.
sometimes navigating, you know, higher and lower, but that being normal.
Like, that type of tension should not be normal.
Even though, you know, I have things going on, despite the ambitions, despite the change.
It's like you need to remind yourself that life is a game.
And in the grand scheme of things, none of this.
Like, zero percent of it matters.
This is a little side quest to gain some.
perspective here. It's funny when the small things start to feel like the big things, we're often
too far in the weeds, right? We need to pull ourselves up and, you know, see the garden again in its
totality. And so just moving back to the breath, separating myself from everything, it was amazing.
You know, and as I took a walk later that night, Lindsay's saying, just because you care doesn't mean
you need to carry it became more and more profound.
I think the missing link there,
and what it helped me in a sense rediscover,
is that everything comes back to trust.
You can care about not getting a flat in the middle of the road,
and by the way, you should.
You should care about your work on YouTube.
You should care about crushing the keynote at the conference.
You should care about all those things.
But you can also separate yourself from the outcome
and trust that you, day by day, minute by minute,
are doing everything that's required
to bring that ideal outcome to life.
You have to trust yourself, right?
Do the thing without carrying the pressure of doing the thing.
That's the goal.
You can only control what you can control.
And accomplishing this has been,
a lifelong journey, by the way.
Like, sometimes I do great with it.
Sometimes I temporarily lose sight of the big picture altogether.
But I understand the value and the art of cutting away.
And I would advocate everyone do the same.
We don't have to carry the weight of those things we're working towards.
We don't have to carry the weight of the expectations or the hypotheticals.
We don't have to carry the weight of others' opinions
or those pieces of the past that we feel like we are tied to.
All of that can go.
If it matters, move towards it.
Trust your ability to navigate.
Trust yourself to conquer anything that comes at you.
And let that be enough.
It's been a great few days since that class
because I feel like, you know,
I was able to shake my life up like a snow glow,
rediscover that even with the chaos flying around,
there are only a few things worthy of my attention.
There's only so much I can do.
It's like the metaphorical hand of God reminding me,
dude, everything is going to be fine.
When you simplify a necessary component of carrying less,
you force yourself to ask, hey, what really matters here?
Right.
And then, you know, you are able to chip away at those things.
And chipping away is your superpower.
Like what else can you do other than ship away at the necessary things?
Nothing.
And by the way, you need nothing else.
So why the extra clutter?
Why the chaos?
Why the noise?
Right?
Find stillness in the simple fact that everything is going to be fine and it's going to be fine because there's nothing you can't handle.
There's nothing too big or complex for you.
You might hear this and think, okay, that's obvious.
That's simple.
I will never cease to be amazed how it is the simple rules of life that when we let them slip away, the wheels come off the wagon.
It is the simple things we need to harness and keep by our side.
Simple is the sun around which everything else revolves.
Don't carry the weight of what can't be altered.
Instead, fall in love with the current moment.
Be proud of the trust you have in yourself.
Know that the pieces will fall where they're,
meant to. And they'll fall where they're meant to because rather than being chained to
their outcome, you freed yourself. You focused instead on the brush stroke being painted
in real time. That is how a masterpiece comes to life. The freedom to care about the portrait
without carrying the pressure contained in its materialization.
Care, but don't carry.
I'm going to take a second and thank the sponsor of today's podcast episode, Pro Compression.
Coined the best compression socks you'll ever wear,
they're a big part of my running, my lifting, as well as my recovery.
For those unfamiliar with compression socks and the value that they bring to your fitness journey,
you know, they're known for a few things.
One, alleviating swelling and soreness after a workout, boosting blood flow, energy, and also enhancing performance and recovery.
So being as into fitness as I am, become a big part of my routine, and I'm happy to pass that along to you guys.
They're currently offering 40% off their entire website if you use the code E.P40.
The website is procompression.com, and again, that's code EP40.
Life is the manifestation of stories.
Stories we tell ourselves about the world and our place within it.
Rules that we've constructed and we respect, we adhere to.
They dictate the outcomes we get.
They become our reality.
Because to establish a parameter means at some point there's a line that we don't cross, right?
And there are obvious lines that we point to and we say no thanks.
For example, our values, right?
I won't do X because, well, it will hurt someone I love?
Or legal parameters.
I won't do Y because I know the repercussions, they're too much.
It's not in my self-interest.
And these are obvious.
These are talked about.
We're aware of these stopping points.
But I want to talk about a different set of rules.
The stories we're writing without realizing we're doing it.
How we think we're running.
running a sprint, but I have no idea that there's heavy weight on our shoulders holding us down,
and you can't take that weight off if you don't know it's there. And this all came to me a few
months ago. I was in L.A. for the weekend, having lunch with some incredible entrepreneurs.
They've done some amazing things. And one of them sold a dating app for hundreds of millions
of dollars, another one a health care company, another one had a very successful food distributing
business, and I'm sitting there kind of blown away. And my priority was to listen. And my priority was to
not run my mouth or fabricate or impress,
but to simply observe what creates this type of result.
I was listening to Alex Mayer who created Zeus
talk about his upbringing.
He came to the U.S. as an immigrant from Iran
and worked his way up from nothing.
It's not like these folks were given the world.
They took it.
And it took me about three minutes to find a commonality
in their worldview.
To me, it couldn't be more evident.
and it was impossible to miss.
They don't look at life how I do,
or at least how I did.
See, the story I told revolved around my parameters.
Sure, I had moments of boldness, I pushed myself,
I worked hard, but I looked at life
in terms of what it would allow.
Here's how things are.
Okay, how can I stretch that?
But that's like repainting or adding onto a house
that was already built, right?
There's only so much flexibility, so much you can do with that.
But these guys are going around the table talking like little kids on Christmas, right?
Talking about life like it's a game.
Talking about opportunity like it's an apple waiting to be picked from a tree right outside.
There was no, what will the world allow?
It was with a smile, anticipation, and self-believe, what can I make?
And Alex, who I mentioned earlier, sold Zeus, right, created Menser Box, and he loves beef.
eats it all the time, right?
And so it's become his next entrepreneurial venture,
a healthy beef stick company.
And every thought seems to revolve around that.
How can he take something he loves
and share it with the world?
His imagination is now driving his thought process,
which drives his action.
Not parameters, not someone else's reality, but possibility.
See, I left the table with this feeling
I've never really had before.
It's like someone tapped me on the shoulder
and reminded me of the freedom contained
in every single step.
Not flexibility, but freedom.
Like a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders.
Who cares if you mess up?
Who cares if you lose?
Who cares?
That's part of this game we're playing.
A game where reality isn't an obligation to be lived,
it's an opportunity to be explored.
It's not about what you don't have.
It's being grateful for everything that brought you to right now.
Because right now is a perpetual launching pad.
You know, growth is learning.
And that afternoon, I learned to take life way less seriously.
To enjoy it.
To let imagination drive every step.
Because the difference is some of us build because we don't want to lose.
We don't want us to come to fear and not meeting our potential.
We fear being inadequate, falling short.
We see obstacles.
Some of us, we build to capture the beauty, the excitement.
That makes the difference.
And look, I'm not presenting you empirical data.
I don't have all the answers, but I'm willing to bet that years from now, looking back,
that simple understanding will have played a substantial role in whatever comes next.
The rules changed, and so did the path.
Let's not become so focused on each footstep that we lose sight.
of where they're collectively taking us.
What are you building?
Why are you here?
To play by someone else's rules
or to transform yourself and by default,
the world around you?
See, reality is fluid.
It's malleable.
And the beauty is in that process of creating
a ship leaving the harbor has infinite possibility.
Unlimited potential.
And that gives it.
It's power.
There's no right turn or wrong turn.
The only way to lose is to stand still, to think that horizon in the distance is too far or not
for you.
See, a harbor is not a stopping point, it's a beginning.
So take control over that world, push it, test it, see what it has to offer, throw your interests
and your curiosities against the wall.
See what sticks.
What ignites your soul test the universe because life it rewards the bold.
Those courageous enough to step outside their front door and not follow, but design.
Those who know things are the way they are simply because others before them had the courage to make it so.
Well, now it's your turn.
You defeated the one in 400 trillion odds stacked against your birth.
You navigated through your low points.
You've done enough to get to this very moment, this instant.
For the mistakes that brought you here will become the wisdom that leads you forward.
That takes you to places you never thought possible.
And where exactly that is is entirely up.
Sometimes what you don't do is more powerful than what you do.
Sometimes the answer is not the home run or some lifetime achievement award.
No, sometimes the answer is simply hanging.
Realizing that the yes is they're important.
But they're nothing compared to the noes.
No, to the faint whispering that you can.
No to the feelings of inadequacy and no to the reflection staring back at you that just feels ordinary.
As that feeling, it's wrong.
And what this means, as I was once told, is that success is not always the spectacular.
Sometimes it is simply hanging on when others would let go.
when the world would hear that same faint whisper and bow down because, oh, we all hear it.
Life is not a movie.
There is no fixed ending.
And where there are unknowns, there is fear.
That's not rocket science.
Unknown's equal fear.
But if I may, let me explain something.
Because where there is fear, there is also something else.
And that something is opportunity.
like a curtain that must be pulled back, an ocean that must be crossed, or a toll that must be pined, while you dance to melodies of songs unwritten, and are led by the characters in stories untold.
This is not a game of the miraculous. This is a game of self-belief.
A game of not personalizing the people that are going to let you down, the days that will bring you
to your knees, it's not feeling inadequate when you swing and miss because you will.
And I hope you do.
I hope you do because each swing makes you stronger and each loss makes it easier.
Easier to say no to that ship that wants to bring you right back to the port you left from,
how comfortable, how safe, how secure it would be.
But just like fear and opportunity are one in the same,
so are safety and regret.
A concession, a wolf and sheep's clothing, and they are a lot of things, but they are not.
So forget about the grandiose.
The magic is not in the moon.
It's in the staircase that takes you there.
Each step, each battle, each time you fall, smile to yourself,
and carry on.
Because the difference between average and exceptional
is the ability to make a single decision,
the decision to hold on.
To stand firm when the people around you turn back,
to believe in your foundation when the walls close in,
it's running a race with eyes fixated on each step.
Not on the finish line.
No, the finish line doesn't do anything but distract.
It reminds you of the road to be traveled.
Your job is not to make a finish line appear.
It is to say yes to the step in front of you and no to everything else.
Anyone can take one step.
Anyone can progress one foot.
Races, journeys,
Life is simply a culmination of those steps, a culmination of little decisions to not let go.
So when your arms shake, in the voice in your head screams,
when your thoughts beg you to stop and your mind starts to rationalize the possibility of surrender,
remember that big things are broken into little things.
Minutes are merely seconds.
Mountains are merely rocks.
And success is simply hanging on
when others would be letting go.
Reality is the existence of two entities.
Those who create change and those who merely react to it.
And so I've wondered what separates the one from the many,
what differentiates a fleeting moment from a chapter and a history book.
See, I think we all come to a point where we look up
and we see no top to the wall we seek to climb.
We look down and see the water rising at our feet with every breath.
We look to our left and see those who are where we want to be tomorrow.
and we look to our right and see the trail of decisions we love to take back from yesterday.
This is where most create their limiting narrative, where most succumbed to the world around them, but most is not all.
And every soul eventually comes to find that it was shaped not by sunny days or easy roads,
but by walking to the edge of the only world it's ever known and daring to risk the next to the next to the next to the next to the next to the next.
to risk the normalcy to which it's accustomed.
Because our appearance in the light
is the manifestation of what we do in the shadows
when we're alone,
fighting the little battles.
Greatness isn't just a different level of results.
It's a whole new set of rules.
And the monumental task in front of you
is the culmination of a battle
that's already been fought thousands and thousands of times.
it's been one or lost over and over again.
Every time you decide to stand apart instead of follow the crowd,
decide to flourish instead of just survive,
decide to lead instead of follow,
build instead of conform, when you endure,
it's because you've decided that you are different,
not in that moment,
but every single day leading up to that point.
This is not a reinvention.
It's living out.
who you already chose to be.
So the wall is high, you will climb because it's what you do.
So the water rises, you will swim because it's who you are.
So the people to your left have succeeded, there is always room at the top and you will
claim yours.
So you failed in the past, good, because falling then means you endure now and so you will.
There's a quote attributed Heraclitus on the realities of soldiers in battle.
He says, look, out of every 100 men, 10 shouldn't even be there.
80 are just targets.
Nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them for they make the battle.
But the one, one is a warrior.
And he will bring the others.
that we must find it within ourselves to see that which is difficult.
It's when things seem hopeless, tragic.
It's when we feel lost that we forget a universal truth.
Behind every struggle, no matter how big there is a win, an answer, an opportunity for
recreation.
See, it's very easy in the midst of a
storm to forget that it will pass.
The dark skies block out the light, so we forget the warmth of the sun.
And the wind and the rain, it forces us inside, so we forget the perfection that is
simply breathing in the cool air.
We forget that all storms have one thing in common.
They come and they go.
They are temporary.
And what they leave is hope.
Answers, the clearest, brightest of skies.
See, I'm not asking you to see something that's not there.
I'm not asking you to imagine or live a life of make-believe.
I'm reminding you of what you already know exists behind those clouds.
better days, your solution, your victory, I'm asking you to look to precedent. Because every day
leading up to now has had its adversity. The road to the current moment was paved with trials
and tribulations and what you've done every day until now is figure it out. Find a way.
How many times do you have to prove to yourself that you have to have to be?
what it takes, that you'll be okay, that within the depths of your soul are answers to any
and every problem that you face.
I know things aren't easy.
Maybe they even seem bigger, scarier, more overwhelming than they ever have.
But as adversity grows, so does your resilience.
And I'm not sitting here giving you something new or an answer you didn't.
already possess. All I'm doing is reminding you how incredible you are, how much you've already
overcome and how capable you are of conquering whatever is next. Sometimes in life, the difference
between okay and great or stagnation and growth, it is only a change in perspective.
It is how you look at the world and your place within it, that little voice in your head,
reminding you that you are capable of things beyond your current comprehension,
that your perceived best is a fraction of what you're capable of.
Reality is manageable.
It's always manageable.
It's the fear that if we let it, will be our demise.
And life's too short to bow down to a monster that doesn't even really exist that we created ourselves.
So let's commit to being the ones who find calm when others panic and see opportunity where others see hardship and see what can be gained when others remain fixated on what has been lost.
I love to simplify to find clarity in that which appears overwhelming and complacent.
So here's the formula.
U minus negative thoughts equals infinite possibility.
You are capable of handling anything life throws at you.
In terms of potential and resources and ability, you are, you can overcome.
The only thing that can make a situation debilitating or permanent is you deciding it so.
Therefore, the obstacle will never be life.
life. It will be your thoughts about life. Your thoughts determine how you react. That is reality.
Is it a lost job or an opportunity to begin again, to grow, to fall in love with something you've
always wanted to do? Is it lost time, loneliness, tragic seclusion, or a chance to write
chapter one of your book, scene one of your movie, lay the first brick of what will be
become your empire. I've been sad and I've been happy and I've been broke and I've had money.
And I've felt alone and I've felt loved. But through it all, every step, every trial, every
tribulation I've come out stronger, battle hearted, cognizant of the fact that happiness was
a choice. Money is reacquirable that some people go but the ones that matter stay a part
of you forever. Life is a gift. It's a gift when things are hard. It is a gift when they are easy.
It is always a gift. So don't let your losses define it. If you get back up, it is nothing
short of a victory. Armor that you now wear as you make your way into the world. A world that can
push you down, but it's certain.
can't keep you there not if you don't let it for your mind your body your soul made of the same
elements that surround you the same stars comprising the universe they have equipped you to
whether outlast any earthly dilemma do anything and be anyone never forget that never
Get. So imagine you're sitting down, having something to eat, thinking, relaxing, reading,
whatever you're doing. Someone walks up to the table across from you, pulls out the chair,
sits down, kind of leans back, puts one leg over the other, casually tells you, you know,
you probably don't have what it takes to do anything significant in your life. What would you
say? Be outrageous, right? That's a ridiculous scenario. Well, let's be. Let's be. Let's be. Let's
Let's say that the next day you get up and go to walk, run, work out, and he shows up again.
He starts running next to you, casually reminding you that the odds of you changing,
doing anything for the better or slim to none, that this is kind of a waste of time for you.
You brush it off, you go to work, and guess who?
He passes by your desk, leaves a little note saying that your bosses, your higher-ups,
they're cut from a different cloth.
They just see things in a way you can't.
You'd probably tell that person to take a long walk off a short pier, right?
Or at the very least, you'd understand how absolutely insane the situation is.
People can't just walk up and talk to you like that.
But now imagine that same person is you, living rent-free in your head, and here's the catch.
You invited him in.
You allowed the negativity and the doubt to live there.
See, every time I think about that self-talk,
I can't help but wonder in a world of obstacles to navigate and challenges to tackle.
Why is it acceptable for your biggest obstacle to be you?
Why should you allow or be okay with that?
And I'm not saying everything's perfect all the time.
Every thought's pure bliss.
But I am posing this question.
If you don't believe in yourself, how do you expect anyone else to?
If you're not your biggest ally, if you don't respect the person staring back at you in the mirror,
how do you expect the world to?
Why is our inclination to tense up and refute the negativity from others,
but sit back and accept the same nonsense in our own heads?
If those words don't support what you're trying to build,
I don't care who they're from, where they come from, why they're there,
they don't deserve your time.
And it's a simple awareness that they are not truth.
but merely your fears and your insecurities trying to stop you from becoming who you might be.
My biggest leaps in life, they didn't come from physical milestones or benchmarks.
They came from mental shifts, convincing myself, believing myself, trusting in myself.
When the road is untravelled, when the story is untold, the positive and the negative are both make-believe.
They are both fairy tales, their options, their theories, and guess what?
You get to choose which option, which one will be yours.
My favorite quote is, you are always stronger than you think you are.
Not so much because it reiterates how high the bar is,
but because it reminds me how low we often set it for ourselves when we're not paying attention.
How loud that negative voice can be.
You know, when I was unemployed, I was writing, I was running out of money,
my life changed because I stopped seeing myself as some lost, jobless mess,
and I started seeing myself as one of the greats with a hell of a road to travel.
See, people always follow through on who they believe themselves to be.
I refuse to hear that you might fail and the not good enough,
and I buckled off for the road ahead,
and when you believe you can change,
and know that the road to your goals will be rocky,
it will be uncomfortable, but worth it,
You are taking that hostile voice and making him or her a spectator, not a decider of fate.
And yeah, you will lose, you can't win all the time, and you will feel stuck, but life's not always smooth sailing.
And sure, you'll be mad at yourself, but not every decision is a home run.
But these situations are the byproduct of a journey, and here is my point.
Self-belief is being able to differentiate your situation and pointless negative talk about the situation.
It's about remembering that you are the gatekeeper of your own mind.
When you believe in you, it places your faith, your strength, and your determination in the driver's seat.
It makes everything else trivial, meaningless.
It makes it an option that you are simply not going to choose.
