Starting point is 00:00:00 Don't you dare reach for your pocket, I told myself. In fact, take that phone and go put it in another room. Shut your internet off, set your devices to do not disturb and think. Please, think. You are losing yourself to distraction. As Cal Newport puts it, you know, we're in a world that, demands more thought, more deep work than ever before, while we all simultaneously become more and more incapable of that focus.
Starting point is 00:00:44 And to me, it feels like more than a chuckle at our outrageous screen time or a self-deprecating joke about how reliant we are on our phones. The dopamine hit, you know, I think it's antithetical overall to what we need. to where we find our purpose, which is a dichotomy that's frustratingly true with so many things. That balance for me to have a digital business that means so much to me that I'm so proud of, but also tiptoeing around that same digital world
Starting point is 00:01:24 like it's a hungry lion capable of devouring me. That's a real feeling. It's water that's foundational for life, but in too large a quantity will kill. It's the sun that, while integral and responsible for this planet as we know it, also has no problem ending, you know, anything that's too openly exposed to its rays, to its heat. There's always a sweet spot between too much and not enough. That happy medium, that intersection is why we're all here.
Starting point is 00:02:02 Because when I don't take time to deeply think, when I lose the big picture, I remain in a cycle of routine. And sometimes that's great, right? Morning routine is great. I don't really have to think about it. I'm programmed. Things like driving a car, as Doohigg explains in the power of habit, your foot stepping on the gas. It's involuntary. And thank God for that.
Starting point is 00:02:29 But one must be able to step outside that loop. and ask the big picture questions. We have to make time to at least roughly chart the course. And it'll change. Life will present its obstacles, but we'll have at least parsed out what matters and what doesn't. When life is all habit and reflex, when you've lost the ability to examine the self
Starting point is 00:02:59 because one minute alone with your thoughts is agonizing, Well, you won't be able to see past the surface of who you are and what you're capable of. I want to be clear here, this is not me complaining about perhaps the most prosperous society ever to exist. This is me saying, you know, there are some dangers that we way too easily overlook. That when you outsource your thinking, you outsource your future. And it's not hard to fall into that trap. I just referenced the book Deep Work a few minutes ago.
Starting point is 00:03:43 I think it's one of the most important books someone can read in this day and age, you know, Cal Newport talking about separating ourselves from distraction. I remember the day I first listened to that book, I was sick, so I wasn't on my usual run. I was walking and because of that I felt this urge to, as the book was playing, to reach into my pocket and check for notifications. And it really was eye-opening. It's like we are scared to completely immerse ourselves in solitude.
Starting point is 00:04:16 But solitude is where we uncover so much. Silence is where we hear what our souls have to say. It's where we understand who we are. My favorite Joseph Campbell quote, The Cave You Fear holds the treasure you seek. And, man, I hate to say it, but I think being alone, even for a short period of time, is that monster lurking in the cave?
Starting point is 00:04:44 You know, the one we're scared to confront, even though it's what we need. Solitude is the demon we are consistently masking in a constant influx of media and small talk and DMs and emails. You know, that stuff has its value, but it's not real. In the sense that I find it disconnected from purpose.
Starting point is 00:05:09 So here's something. that I've been doing and, you know, I would suggest that you give it a try. It's been certainly helpful in my life and start small, even if it's 15 minutes, but take a walk by yourself. No phone. And it's challenging at first because, you know, you want to be consuming something. Even if it's, you know, educational, valuable, still, right? No phone. Solitude. Think about life. Think about who you are. Think about what you've always wanted and where your current reality aligns. Think about how much you have and how lucky you are. Think about any or all of these things, but think.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Let your mind go where amidst the push and pull of life, you don't often let it wander. For example, some thoughts from my walk today, some of it random sporadic noise, some of it more valuable than others, but all of it valuable. because the process in its entirety is valuable. You know, I spend some time thinking about the week ahead, the things I'm excited about and how to prepare for them, and realize one of them I didn't want to do. I then had that debate with myself,
Starting point is 00:06:28 well, do I not want to do it because it doesn't align with my goals or because it makes me uncomfortable? Came to the conclusion that I think it's the latter, so it's staying in my schedule, but I'll reassess. I thought about Florida. I consistently think about how luck to be down here after living in so many cold places. It's just such a beautiful environment and, you know, one that I don't take for granted.
Starting point is 00:06:52 I thought about a statement I just heard from a professional athlete after his surgery, talking about how hard it was on him, but that he would rise from the ashes and he would have the best year of his life. And, you know, my mind went to one of the most important rules of leadership that it's not about you. your rise or fall, right? To lead is to make it about the team, about the overall goal,
Starting point is 00:07:19 and how grateful I was to come across that video, to see that and really dissect it. You know, sometimes the best ways we learn is by seeing what not to do, right? And I'll take that with me. I'll take that understanding with me on my own journey. Last thing I remember, I thought about some of the books I've been consuming,
Starting point is 00:07:42 I've taken in an insane amount of books over the years. But I practically stopped reading physical books, right? And now I consume mostly unaudible or other audiobook methods made me wonder whether the value is equivalent. How much that varies from person to person, maybe something to research later, right? That's all I remember as I sit here now. But the point is, you know, this is stuff that if I don't immerse myself in solitude
Starting point is 00:08:08 and break through the barrier of boredom, I don't get to. You know, and maybe you go through a week where you don't find much. But as the saying goes, right, one idea, one concept, one epiphany can truly change the dynamic of your life. It could change everything. Right? There are answers just beyond the realm of distraction we operate in. Some of them pertain to trivialities like the audiobooks in the cold front. Some of them pertain to your goals and your development, who you are, where you're going,
Starting point is 00:08:42 and how you'll get there. As Newport says, to simply wait and be bored has become a novel experience in modern life. And while his emphasis and focus is primarily on work in creating an environment to be productive, I want to suggest that
Starting point is 00:08:58 it's not only our work that needs saving, but ourselves. We can't lose touch with what matters most. We can't become so shallow in our thoughts and our actions that the beauty remains buried, away. There is something in you that's untapped, unfinished, raw talent or desire. There are pieces of you that need to be assembled. And if left alone, will wither away, unremarkably, quietly,
Starting point is 00:09:32 and probably without your noticing. So my ask is that you think of this as more than me cheering, on long walks. It's not about the walks, right? It's about time alone with yourself and what that opens up for you. It's about recognizing the spaces we need to carve out from the outside world so that when we re-enter the outside world,
Starting point is 00:10:02 we know who we are. We understand where we're headed. We don't go where the wind blows. We are able, as the saying goes, to adjust our sales to get to our destination. All you need is more time with you. What's up, guys, Eddie here. And before we jump into the next chapter,
Starting point is 00:10:32 just a quick note. So, as many of you know, every single video that I've ever put on this channel has been created with the intent of building momentum in your life. If you want something physical to anchor that momentum, We've created the brand AGNS, or always grateful, never satisfied for that exact reason. Athletic apparel that embodies the very ideas and concepts I talk about every day.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Because you're watching on YouTube or Spotify, we've created a code for this exclusive community, YWW20. You can use that on the website, agns.lifestyle. We're right under this video on YouTube. All this stuff is there in the shop. Again, code YWW20. It gets you 20% off the entire store. It's a great way to support the channel and also elevate your journey.
Starting point is 00:11:23 Let it be a reminder to keep showing up. Appreciate your time. Always grateful, never satisfied. On to the next. I learned recently how grateful I am for storms. Quiet skies don't show you how strong you are. Calm doesn't force you to level up. No, it's when the ground shakes,
Starting point is 00:11:50 learn to endure. We're forced to find within ourselves a resilience that was once tucked away. They say confidence is earned, and well, it's earned because when we walk through hell, we give our greatness permission to walk alongside us. We grow in proportion to the discomfort we allow in our lives. Our evolution is tied to the stressors we face. When we don't know what to do, we have to look in the mirror and find solutions. When we don't know where to go, we learn to navigate foreign, even hostile terrain. When we allow life to push us,
Starting point is 00:12:38 we learn to push back. If you want more, allow more to be placed before you. A lot of us want to be slaying dragons, but never find the courage to approach the mountain where the dragons sleep. A lot of us want our blades sharpened but never approached the fire that would forge them. It's not discomfort for the sake of discomfort. No, it's discomfort so that your greatness receives the invite to materialize. It's discomfort so that you can teach yourself what you're capable of.
Starting point is 00:13:18 when you stay safe you remain tied to reality as it is when you avoid chaos you never learn to shape it and it's in shaping the turbulence that we become capable that we grow so remember that voice that voice telling you to step down to shy away from difficulty chaos and discomfort
Starting point is 00:13:46 that voice is completely at odds with your potential. That voice wants to preserve. It doesn't want conflict because conflict threatens the now. But a life fully lived takes the current state, it smashes it on the floor, and it rebuilds over and over again. A life fully lived is walking through the fire so that you are forced to become someone who can handle the fire.
Starting point is 00:14:16 flames. Be grateful for those storms. They give the excellence within you a face. They take you by the hand and show you what you've been capable of since the very day you were born. It took 16 days to realize how precious life truly is. There's a book called The Gap and the Gain. by Dan Sullivan, Benjamin Hardy. And the book asks this question. Are you looking over your shoulder and measuring how far you've come? Or are you only consumed by how far you have to go? The distance between where you are and your destination.
Starting point is 00:15:23 Are you living in the abundance that surrounds you or in the scarcity, the mind seems to constantly be attempting to. to trick us into believing. This idea was first made known to me during a drive one day. I was on the phone with my friend Tom, who happened to have read the book. I was pulling into my garage, and the gate wouldn't open to the parking garage. And so I'm sitting there, speakerphone on, and I'm just throwing a tantrum. I'm in the car screaming about how ridiculous it is that the gate won't open when I need it to.
Starting point is 00:15:58 you know, it's not rocket science, how is it hard, the thing should open when you press the button. And, you know, then remembering I was on the phone, kind of sat there for a second in silence. And after the momentary pause, Tom's voice comes through the speakers in the car. You know, his usual calm southern accent goes, Eddie, are you living in the gap or the gain right now? It was a lightball moment, right? It's a gate we're talking about. The slightest inconvenience. Not an intrusion to my health, my family, my friends, my business.
Starting point is 00:16:41 The ability to live how I want to live in a country that provides the freedom to do that. It wasn't about the food I would soon eat or the water I had access to. Nope. None of that. It was a gate, a slow to open gate. And I love the idea, you know, the perspective to stop. to look around and ask the question, how serious is this quote-unquote problem? Have I slipped back into the gap in life?
Starting point is 00:17:10 Forgetting about how far I've come, how much I've done, totally omitting the fact that eight years ago, I would have given anything to be living on the other side of that gate like I do now. Right? Your perspective is, seems to be the first. thing to go, right? It requires that constant awareness and attention. And I would use this idea every once in a while on and off, right, when I could remember the gain versus the gap, attempting to cling to that perspective when possible. But the idea didn't fully reemerge in any
Starting point is 00:17:49 meaningful way until almost a year later. That same friend Tom convinced me to join this mastermind and, you know, I'm in my first session, sitting in the room. I was led by an amazing guy by the name of Ben. And Ben made it known to us that day that something tragic had happened in his family. His newly born son, Ben Jr., had passed away at only 16 days old, right, after battling an illness. And he's telling this story, obviously shaken.
Starting point is 00:18:25 still saddened, you know, these things never truly leave you. And what he said changed my life. Rocked me at my core. He looked at the room. And he said how grateful he was for those 16 days. That they were perhaps the most important 16 days of his life, that he learned more about himself in those 16 days than the rest of his life combined. That the love he learned.
Starting point is 00:18:58 He got to share the time he spent, the miracle of being with his son, he wouldn't trade that for the world. It was as much a part of him now as the air he was breathing in. Those 16 days were in their own unique way, perfection. And see, we're all, you know, sitting there looking on thinking, you know, this is someone who's become a friend over the past couple months, right? we are a group. We've spent time together. And it's like, well, how can we help? How can we assist?
Starting point is 00:19:35 There's suffering here. What can we do? And obviously, you know, the sentiment there is correct. You know, everyone's heart was in the right place. But I think what Ben reminded us in an incredibly moving, powerful way, is that our toughest tests, our most difficult battles, sometimes our most painful experiences, there's beauty wrapped under those things.
Starting point is 00:20:06 Sometimes the things that mean the most are disguised as our toughest tests, our battles. The courage and strength he demonstrated not only to share the story but to use it to propel himself, his family in the world around him brought tears to my eyes. It brought that gift of perspective, right? And certainly I don't want to speak forward. him, but he took what I'd assume is the most challenging 16 days of his life and allowed it to
Starting point is 00:20:35 blossom into the miracle it was meant to be, which I can't imagine was easy. In fact, you know, I can see a world where many people aren't able to do what Ben did or have find that perspective that been found, you know, not without the required growth and poise. Not without, you know, learning that that gate outside the parking garage doesn't hold a candle to what's actually important. Things don't go the way we draw them up in life. Not always. Life is confusing and chaotic. It's unpredictable. Sometimes it leaves us with nothing more than a moment to look up and ask why. But if you're able to pause and seek out those answers, if you're able to step out of the gap and into the gain, if you're able to accept the beauty, beauty that life is trying to offer you. It's always there. And I hope personally to take Ben and
Starting point is 00:21:41 Ben Jr.'s strength, courage, and live my life by their example. To immerse myself into life's abundance and share as much of it as I can with the world. And I encourage you to join me on the journey. Life is a miracle. Let's make the decision to see it that way. Be you. you always. And you might hear that and think, well, that's obvious. That's simple. That's easy. Not if the world has something to say about it.
Starting point is 00:22:30 In fact, Emerson is quoted as saying, to be yourself in a world that's constantly trying to make you someone else is the greatest accomplishment. It's not always obvious, but rather the subtle erosion of ourselves. perhaps not intentionally deciding to wear a mask it's never taking the time to examine the reflection in the mirror and ask the right questions.
Starting point is 00:22:58 Losing our intentionality means we end up wherever the wind blows us. And that could very well be a destination we aren't too happy with. Now this next part will seem a little trivial and insignificant. But bear with me, right? because sometimes the most important lessons are small, but they become a portal or a gateway to understand the bigger things, right? So for me, this started with a black t-shirt, walking into a group meeting with some amazing people
Starting point is 00:23:34 from all over the country and world doing different things and helping people in various ways. And all of them, as I entered the conference room, happen to be wearing business casual, which is great, except I haven't worn a collar in a pretty long time. I've been doing my podcast, recording videos, building my businesses in a black t-shirt. And so that's how I walked into the room. And I found it interesting that almost immediately this self-talk emerged. It's like, you stand out right now.
Starting point is 00:24:08 They're going to think less of you. Is this disrespectful? Is this showing that perhaps I don't care, right? all of these things. And so I left that day and I sat with the thoughts. They bothered me, so I wanted to spend some time with them. And here's where I landed, taking those same points one by one. Number one, if they think less of me for being me, then that would be on them and not me.
Starting point is 00:24:35 I'd gladly fight that uphill battle to earn people's respect in my authenticity. Number two, it's not disrespectful because I am happy to be there, proud to be there. I do take pride in my appearance. I just do it in my way. And number three, be you always. How you show up is what matters. Having the courage to live in a way that aligns with who you are and what's important to you. And why do I say this?
Starting point is 00:25:16 Because if we can grasp this idea with something as trivial and as small as a black t-shirt in a conference room, perhaps we can then push it into other areas of life. The bigger things, the more important things. Like who's in that room to begin with, right? Who are we surrounding ourselves with? How do we spend our time? Right? There's two ingredients to this recipe.
Starting point is 00:25:39 One, who am I slash what matters? And two, how can I position myself so that, That is the arena I'm operating in. Sometimes we don't do it because we're scared, but sometimes we don't do it because we never ask the right questions. When you can find and hold your authenticity, you feel it and so will others. The question transforms from how can I blend in and not disrupt to how can I use the abundance that surrounds me to live a life that's meaningful. There's a lot of us metaphorically walking around in collared shirts.
Starting point is 00:26:17 when they're not what we're meant to be wearing. A lot of us asking, how do I not screw this up? Instead of asking, how do I go get what's mine and do it in a way that matters to me? Be you always. And the closer you are to that, the more powerful you will be. It means understanding who in your life adds to that
Starting point is 00:26:43 and who in your life detracts from it. It means looking around and asking, am I doing this for me or for others? It's that old airplane mantra. You have to put your mask on first before assisting others, or no one gets saved. No one gets the value. In a way, life is a beautiful pursuit of simplicity, of really distilling your world down to what matters and pushing away the rest. Because like moths to aflame, the complexity and unnecessary minutia finds us.
Starting point is 00:27:18 It latches on and becomes what we carry around. I better not let go, says the lizard brain. This is how things are supposed to be. This is what everyone is doing. But when you find that clarity, truly capture it. Yeah, you earn the respect of others around you in that metaphorical conference room. But most importantly, you earn your own respect. You, to a greater extent, appreciate that face staring back at you in the mirror.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Think about it this way. They do not build statues for those who blend. in the best, who conformed, right? No, we build statues for those who had the courage to live in their authenticity, to do things their way, because we understand how unique, how powerful, how difficult that is. Be you. There's nothing more powerful than that. Stop protecting what you've built, like what you've built is what holds the value. No, the value is in the builder. His or her knowledge and ability to build again and again if they so desire.
Starting point is 00:28:52 On an episode last week, I talked about a conversation recently had at a mastermind in Santa Monica. I want to pass along one more piece of wisdom from that day that I found to be incredibly valuable. This was just a random comment made by someone in the group. And so to kick off the scenario, someone asks everyone in the room, hey, but what if things don't work out? And it was more specific. I forget exactly what it was, something along the lines of what if the monthly revenue decreases, or, you know, what if, you know, my target or my intended outcome doesn't evolve or unfold the way I wanted it to? What then? Is it worth taking the risk?
Starting point is 00:29:37 And this person stands up and says, listen, we need to stop looking at our businesses, like it is the only business. Like it is something that needs to be protected, that if it falls down or if it's taken away, it's over, it's the end of us. We are entrepreneurs, which means the power and strength is in our ability to build again, not the thing that's built. Right? Theoretically, we should be able to do this over and over and over again. And what we do, and obviously I'm paraphrasing all of this, right? But what we do is we put cages around ourselves and our potential. You know, we shackle ourselves to the current moment instead of taking the necessary risks
Starting point is 00:30:23 because we're thinking, what if we lose it all? Well, fine. It's the ability to build again. And I loved the idea. Because, man, it's relatable to me. I have three businesses I'm growing right now, and every single one of them, I find myself playing conservative at times,
Starting point is 00:30:46 not wanting to break the momentum or what's going. I've spent a decade building this. And the most valuable thing I've acquired or produced is not the company. It's the ability to add value. That's what's been built. And even if the physical company disappeared overnight, no one can take what's been learned.
Starting point is 00:31:12 I think it was in the book The Happiness Hypothesis, which was one of the first books I read almost a decade ago prior to starting my personal brand and really beginning my journey. And the idea was, like, you could take everything away from the top, I don't know, 2 to 5%. Maybe it was all the way up to 10. And they would reacquire it in the next 10 years. Because it's not the stuff they had that made the difference.
Starting point is 00:31:45 It was their ability to acquire it. Their understanding of the world. Not looking at life through a scarcity mindset, but an abundance mindset, positioning themselves to build and grow. That's something that cannot be. taken away. This is all a message that is hitting at the exact time I need
Starting point is 00:32:07 to hear it, right? Be bold. No, that's not bold, that's maintenance. That's doing what you've always done. Plus, maybe a little extra here or there. Truly living is about uncapping yourself in totality. Really reaching. Because you know that it's not the entity that
Starting point is 00:32:25 holds the value. It's the one or ones who brought it to life. It's crazy to me. that even when you are aware of fear, when you understand our proclivity to play scared, right, you get it, it's something we need to look out for. Even then,
Starting point is 00:32:48 do we still find in our own lives places where we're limiting ourselves? As if the fear just hides in the shadows, controlling the subconscious from a distance, like a puppet master, strength, growth, evolution is the ability to find that fear and dismantling. As was said to me a few years ago, most actions are reversible, meaning you can make a mistake and it can be reversed.
Starting point is 00:33:19 It can almost always be fixed, or at least re-approach from a more intelligent angle. But what certainly cannot be fixed or changed or adjusted are roads never walked. Adventures never begun. And with a, a sense, scarcity mindset, you spend your entire life in your corner protecting the little fragments of life you've collected along the way. That's it. But if you can flip that, if you can find a way
Starting point is 00:33:54 to see the abundance, the value, the infinite opportunity, you realize it's not in those little fragments you've collected, but the understanding that you can always collect more and not only that build something beautiful with them. Not only acquire more, but use them to create a new reality. Bend and shape the word normal like it's clay. Like the world around you's not giving orders but taking them. You hold the value, not what you've made. You.
Starting point is 00:34:31 We've all heard give a boy a fish, feed him for a day, teach him to fish, feed him for life. I'm going to give it my all. make it my priority to remember every step along the way that it's in my ability to fish that value exists. If I'm not able to catch anything on a particular day, life moves on and so do I. If what I've caught goes bad or expires, life moves on and so do I.
Starting point is 00:34:58 It's in the action. It's in the doing. That's not only why you can take the risk and shoot for the moon. It's why you must.
