Starting point is 00:00:22 You're richer than you think. I'm going to make everything around me beautiful. That will be my life. Elsie DeWolf. Changing for the better is not about the creation of miracles. It's about choosing to see the ones that already exist. Life is hard, but coincidentally, hard things tend to be the gatekeepers to the important ones. We are let in when we bring ourselves finally to shake hands with and embrace the very
Starting point is 00:01:08 things we once saw as the problem. Whereas Ryan Holiday has famously put it, the obstacle tends to be the way. How funny, how counterintuitive, how upside down life can see. But I think that's it. Sometimes it's not even that we're looking at the wrong things. So we're looking at the right things, wrong way. Avoiding the call to step further into the world and deeper into ourselves. Terrified of scraping our knees on the climb, we burden ourselves with the much more painful
Starting point is 00:01:55 choice of staying at the bottom of the mountain and looking up. But the scars we've collected and will continue to collect on the way up, they do not make you less. then. No, they are what make you beautiful. You see yourself and those scars is imperfect. I see someone who has lived, who has taken risks, fallen, and bounced back. I see character and wisdom and elegance and boldness. In an imperfect world, those quote unquote flaws and scars may, funny enough, just be the closest thing to perfection we'll ever experience. It's from our courage to step out, our willingness to crack that we flourish. Living necessarily includes a deterioration over time. But a deterioration of the external, because the internal, the internal, the soul,
Starting point is 00:03:07 it stays young. It's underneath. that forever crumbling world around us that we find the divine. It is because of our scars, not to spite them, that we grow our wings. They aren't to be feared but coveted. You are more because of the mistakes you made, the challenges you face, the adjustments you had to see through. and I believe our value increases with each tear and break, resembling the Japanese art of Kinsugi, where a pot that breaks and is put back together with golden lacquer holds more value than the original unblemished piece.
Starting point is 00:04:06 See, Wolf says, I'm going to make everything around me beautiful. And I think this simply calls for an optical adjustment, a shift in relations between things and how you perceive those things. Me, I don't want the whitest, cleanest, newest shoes. As far as I'm concerned, there's very little beauty to preserve there. I want shoes with worn souls from the miles and miles they're. carried me. Holes from the distance I had to walk to find the people who add joy to my life. Cracks from running in the rain while the rest of the world stayed inside. I want my imperfections to show that I lived while I was here. So from now on, let's stop conflating perfecting.
Starting point is 00:05:16 Perfect and beautiful. Perfect is no skin in the game. Perfect is standing forever in the doorway looking out. Perfect is dreaming and wishing and hoping, but never leaving, because leaving is where our vision brushes up against a reality we may see as too big. No, we want not perfect, but beautiful.
Starting point is 00:05:48 We want scars and flaws and lessons and loss. Because from those things as difficult as they may be, we're born again. Imperfection is life and life is beautiful. So here's to more scuffed shoes and scraped knees, to walking an imperfect, yet beautiful road ahead. The miracle isn't that I've finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.
Starting point is 00:06:43 John Bingham. We all share a commonality. The runner on the starting blocks. The one at work, the one studying, the one trying to create the best life possible for their family. See, we are all at a beginning, looking up at an idea. Nothing given, nothing to adjust or react to no just an idea.
Starting point is 00:07:10 And ideas when we are at the bottom looking up, they're deceptive in nature, their size, their weight, their breadth. They like to present themselves as much more than they actually are. And so, to turn ideas into things, one needs see themselves, not as some descendant of Mount Olympus tasked with lifting that 2,000-ton boulder before them, but as one armed with an understanding, the awareness that the 2,000-ton boulder before them can be broken down piece by piece that it is nothing more than a facade, and while it may stop most in their tracks, you are simply not most. not because the world treats you differently,
Starting point is 00:08:08 but because you see the world differently. By knowing you are bigger than the sum of its parts, you have defanged this wolf, you have put yourself in position to do that which makes the world tremble, that which causes even the most confident to doubt, you have put yourself in position to begin. See, there is a time to look.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Look at the top of the mountain, breaking through the clouds, powerful and majestic. And then there is a time to look at your feet. And right now is the ladder. You're not concerned with the big things. No, not right now. Your job is to move forward into this haze, to not see but adapt, to not know but trust. Things will materialize, and you know that. But at the same time, you can't control the future.
Starting point is 00:09:08 Your battle is right now, and it's with the space immediately in front of you. It's with the thoughts attempting to deceive you. It's with the things the outside world will tell you, but forward motion is the antidote to all of that. And so forward you must go. The beginning is always the hardest, because our thoughts are a mightier foe than life, obstacle. Thoughts take on lives of their own. They become monsters, demons, dead ends. Obstacles.
Starting point is 00:09:43 On the other hand, just ask that we adjust. There is no obstacle that can't be addressed by stepping into it. And so while the temptation is to sit thinking, speculating about how challenging the road ahead, this is where you think less and move more. Harness the world as it comes because the truth is nothing is as big as it appears to be. Life is incredibly solvable. Every problem has a solution. Every bad chapter ends. Every setback is a chance to be more than you've ever been.
Starting point is 00:10:16 But how would you know that if you bowed down to the mountains in your head? How would you know that if you never began? So let today be the dotted line you sign with your future self. A promise to be a promise to be a little. aware that the mountaintop peers over you, but to not be distracted by its shadow, to take the climb one rock, one step, one second at a time. Let it be an acknowledgement that nothing light throws at you can't be broken down and conquered so long as you don't get in your own way. Gone are the days of being held captive behind steel bars of self-doubt and fear. That road ahead.
Starting point is 00:11:05 is not the problem. It never was. Refusing to give yourself permission to travel down, it was the problem. So without constraints, meet life head on. Let the trials and tribulations emerge because they will, but know that you will rise to meet them. Let the unknown highlight all that you don't know. You can't see.
Starting point is 00:11:32 Fine. The one thing you are sure of is that you will, one by one, transform the unseen into strength. And when those thoughts emerge, telling you that you've gone too far, that you're in over your head that this isn't meant for you, know them, not as truth, but as the only obstacle that can derail and distract. You don't have time for make-believe monsters. No, not today. So onward, you. go to map the unknown, to tame the untamed, to live your life the way it was meant to be lived. So we talk a lot about mindset on this podcast, obviously, but taking care of yourself is more than just mind. It's the entire package. It's mind, body, and soul.
Starting point is 00:12:49 And that's why I've integrated today's sponsor, Cowboy Colostrum, into my daily routine. It's true first-day-hole colostrum from American grass-fed cows designed to support gut health and digestion. Starting point is 00:13:30 slash eddie use code eddie at checkout get 25% off your entire the little e on the car dashboard reminds me that I'm pointed east as I sit at the red light perpendicular to ocean abs staring out at the water this is it this is as far as I can go There are no more streets or towns or cities. There can't be any more stops along the way, just miles and miles of ocean. It's interesting for me to think about all the changes I've made up to now, growing up outside of Los Angeles on the opposite coast, relocating again and again, sometimes very targeted methodical moves,
Starting point is 00:14:37 Sometimes just for the sake of change, but always moving, always going. There's a saying that wherever you go, you take yourself with you. Right? You can change this scenario, the circumstances, the surroundings, but ultimately you can never outrun yourself. You are accompanying you on whatever journey awaits. And it's often not until you run out of real estate until there's no more road or options that you're forced to look in the mirror and acknowledge that it is you who must change.
Starting point is 00:15:26 It's you who must evolve and become that person that you need you to become. And that can be a scary thing. After all, anyone can get in a car, and head east. Anyone can point the compass away from the chaos of now. Move away from their demons. But how many of us can find this strength to look those demons in the eye? How many of us can make ourselves bigger than what attempts to weigh us down? All of us can, but how many of us do? Are we running to something or from us? something. Because there is a difference, and that difference is not small. One of my favorite
Starting point is 00:16:28 speakers, Jim Rohn, when referencing our journeys through life, our push to make more of ourselves, he essentially said, it's not what you get at the other end. It's who you become along the way. And I think like everyone, I've forgotten that from time to time over the years, forgotten that value is not simply ingoing, but in becoming, in the courageous little steps that accumulate over time. Forgotten that the external world might inspire or excite, that change might invigorate the soul, that the road untravelled might remind me of life's beauty, but these externalities are only as valuable as you allow them to be. There are only opportunities if you decide that. to be so. Change inspires. But will you let it inspire you to do that thing you know
Starting point is 00:17:30 you need to do but are terrified of doing? In that road it might remind you of life's beauty but will you let that reminder be your invitation to share your own beauty with the world? Whatever that means for you. Can you be that vulnerable? Can you take that leap in the story of your becoming? See, it is incredibly easy to look out at the world and pinpoint its flaw. All those little problems and imperfections, they tend to jump out at us. But can you identify what you, yourself, need? Can you be courageous enough to ask those questions of yourself. What matters to me?
Starting point is 00:18:28 What does a meaningful life look like to me? Where am I falling short? That is a conversation that needs to be had. And it needs to be had often. Otherwise, we will drive and drive and drive until we hit water in our forced to ask that question. Because it's interesting that when we don't pause and make the changes that need to be made,
Starting point is 00:18:55 Life has a way of ensuring that we do. But when it's mandated by life, it tends to be a lot messier, a lot more chaotic. At least than when we make the decision ourselves. But either way, we cannot run forever. Either way, we must step into a new pair of shoes and learn to walk confidently with them into the night. There are plenty of little mantras floating around out there, little pieces of advice and perhaps it's best for us to weigh them each individually. See what
Starting point is 00:19:33 meets our needs and fits our criteria. After all life is not one size fits all. But one of my favorite among these is to do one single thing that scares you every day and I'll tell you why. Because when we become conditioned to turning our backs on all the uncomfortable things in life, We cripple our prospects of a better tomorrow. It's synonymous with the seed refusing water, saying no to the very thing it needs most. And what should be noted here, one of the reasons it's so dangerous
Starting point is 00:20:11 is that saying no is incredibly subtle. It's not some big event or explosion. There's no fireworks show that occurs every time you walk away from what you need. No, it goes unnoticed. And again, one of the greatest challenges is quantifying that which we don't do. How do you measure that thing you walked away from? Well, unfortunately, you can't.
Starting point is 00:20:41 You can't, at least until you're staring out at the Atlantic with nowhere to run, no more escaping on the agenda. You don't know until you're forced to pick the pieces up and make something of them. And I say this. so that hopefully it can ignite that spark in your soul that you need most, whether you previously recognized it or not. I say this to remind you how much bigger you are than your problems, how you have the ability to transform all that exists around you when you transform yourself. There's a certain inevitability associated with how we see ourselves,
Starting point is 00:21:28 And I believe this to be true at both the personal and the societal levels. Anyone can look in the mirror and see the past, where they've gone wrong, how inadequate and ill-prepared they are. But the courage to look in the mirror and see strength. To both identify and understand one's shortcomings, but know that you have the power to do something about it. To know that the times you fell or didn't make the cut, they don't indicate that the endeavor was all for not or unequivocally wrong. No, there is so much good tied into your pursuit.
Starting point is 00:22:13 So much beauty and courage ingrained in your soul. But imagine. Imagine a life where you no longer run from the gaps but close them. Imagine finding it in your life. yourself to begin that hero's journey. And where you used to run to protect yourself, now you take the offensive to grow yourself. Where you used to avoid the possibility of failure, now you chase the possibility of victory. You can have that if you want to.
Starting point is 00:22:54 You can be that if you choose to. And sure, you may never be able to outrun yourself. but you can always adapt yourself to be that person you always needed you to be. Sometimes we just need the reminder that we are strong enough. We do have what it takes. And that the thing that hurts us most in the short term not only saves us pain in the long term, but it becomes what we live for.
Starting point is 00:23:30 It is where we find our meaning. And so perhaps this ocean before me is not there to remind me of my constraints, that I have no road left, but a reminder of just how often we measure using the wrong metrics. Perhaps I needed to see again that it's not where I end up, but who I become along the way. that when the internal self steps into the shoes it's been too intimidated to wear, that when the world within becomes the beacon you need it to be, the roads and the stops along the way, they matter a little bit less than the eyes that process it all, that decide what it means, how it will be utilized in the game of life. And so, yes, the little E on the car dashboard, it says that I'm pointed east.
Starting point is 00:24:35 But as I sit at this red light, perpendicular to ocean abs, staring out at the water, I know this is only the beginning. Many of life's failures are people who didn't realize how close they were to success when they gave up. Thomas Edison. A quote I go to when I've lost my why, when my frustration over the lack of a particular result overshadows everything. I don't think we realize how transformative these moments are. When confronted by them, we're presented two options.
Starting point is 00:26:08 Give up or emerge better than we were. It's not intuitive, right? It's not normal to think, I know this is hard, but hey, I'm one adjustment away from getting it right. One move away from uncovering momentum. That's why in such moments, I rely on others to remind me, and it's why I remind you now to reiterate how small a push is required to simply get things moving. to remind you that you do want this. It does mean something to you. And you know what? These are the moments you'll look back on. With the tear in your eye, a smile on your face,
Starting point is 00:27:05 and you'll be grateful you push through these moments, the darkest of nights, the lowest of lows. When we're lost, we're stuck, unsure, they are the ones that matter. So shake it off. See, the difference? The reason so many people turn around is because they don't know the secret I'm about to tell you. The very same secret those before have passed on to me. You don't need to do anything, but not stop.
Starting point is 00:27:44 And if that seems too obvious or cliche, let me explain to you that it's in going that we're forced to find solutions. We're forced to become more. It's incredibly hard to stop an object in motion. But the question is, can you move forward when you don't have the answers, when you're tired, when what you've been looking for is nowhere to be found? Can you imagine at that moment what the other side will be like? Looking back on your journey, knowing that where others stopped you hung on, where the cost was too much for so many, you laid it all on the line, these are the decisions you have to make now. So don't listen to that voice rationalizing, begging you to take it down a notch or return to the normalcy of yesterday. Let this message resonate.
Starting point is 00:28:38 Hear me. embrace the fact that you are always one move away from recapturing momentum from finding yourself again it's there everything you need is there have the patience to find it the patience to do what you do best find a way my mornings are when i do some of my best work and mod today's sponsor has become a huge part of that routine. Reference to their website for any safety guidelines. And thank you to Maud. And thank you for watching and being a part of this. Today is not like any day I've lived before.
Starting point is 00:30:27 And why should it be? In this very second, there are roads to be explored that I've never before walked down. There are actions to take that I've never before taken and ideas to bring to life that I've never before given the respect they deserve. That's saying, my golden rule, you are always one decision away from a totally different life. You are always one realization from pulling the lever, opening the door, finding the answer you've been walking by, all your life. The problem is you don't see today as today. You see it as a continuation of yesterday, the same movie with the same characters and same rules without even realizing you need to
Starting point is 00:31:27 change the script. Emerson said, write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year. Why? Because it can be. Your job is to remember that things will continue on and on until we give them an end. We must manually close the book on yesterday's story and start anew because we can. We often don't realize, but we can. And that is why the morning, each new day is so precious. It's taking the mistakes and sometimes disappointments of yesterday
Starting point is 00:32:10 and transforming them into today's lessons. days lessons and the opportunity to begin again. A new journey seen through a new lens, walked through a new pair of shoes, a new sense of self. So here is your reminder that the words were and are, they're very different. That's why each sunrise transcribes into the sky, the hopes and dreams of the you that you've always wanted to be. It's not a crazy formula or some secret code. It's simply untying your boat from the harbor that is yesterday and moving towards tomorrow's
Starting point is 00:32:57 horizon. Nothing in life is as important as you think it is while you are thinking about it. This was written by the author of Thinking Fast and Slow, Daniel Connaman. And what he's referring to is a cognitive body. bias known as the focusing illusion. Pretty basic idea means that we elevate the importance of things that we think about while ignoring other aspects of our lives. By thinking about something, it suddenly matters more to us. And while it's easy to interpret this disconnect between our thoughts and reality is alarming, there's also an opportunity here to use this to our advantage,
Starting point is 00:34:00 right to further become the captain of your ship i've heard my entire life think positive thoughts we all have but there's value in understanding why that's true right otherwise it just feels like a meaningless ritual so connemon talks about a study with college students where they were asked about their overall level of happiness and then they were asked about their dating lives And the answers they gave, there were really, you know, there was no correlation between the two answers. But when the order of the questions were switched, when the students were asked about their dating lives first, and then their overall happiness, the correlation between the two answers increased. The answer they gave about their overall happiness mirrored however they said their dating lives were, at least to a much greater extent. Why? Well, because dating became the variable or the framework that they used to measure their overall happiness, even though perhaps they didn't know it, right? But by focusing on it, it became more relevant. It bled into other aspects of life, right? You get what you focus on. It's that simple. And the truth is, as I mentioned earlier, nothing is as important as we think it is. Everything is magnanimous.
Starting point is 00:35:30 kind of blown out of proportion in our minds. So the question is, why not use that as an advantage? Why not let that become our strength, realizing that if simply thinking about something can change the trajectory of how we view the world, it can be transformative to simply minimize the bad thoughts and focus on good ones. Have you ever thought about how delicate the line we walk?
Starting point is 00:36:03 walk between not caring enough and caring too much. For example, to feel like existence is pointless, right? Everything's bad. There's no reason to try. That makes it hard to get off the couch, like lacking that purpose. But then on the entire other end of the spectrum, to feel like life is riding on every step, to feel like we're not. not allowed the flexibility or leeway to make mistakes. Life matters too much. That also severely limits how we live, just in a different way. And so I want to explore how do we find that middle ground. How do we find that picture in our heads that puts us right where we need to be? The idea that, of course, today is important. Life is a beautiful opportunity to extract meaning
Starting point is 00:37:06 from the world around you to build something that matters. But it's also no checklist. It's no standardized test. No, it's more of a game. We shouldn't be walking around with the weight of the world on our shoulders because that doesn't help anyone. Let's face it, life is just not all that serious. As a good friend of mine, Steve always says to me,
Starting point is 00:37:36 you know, we are sacks of meat on a rock floating through an infinite, ever-expanding universe, and nothing matters. I've heard him say that a million times, right? Let's go, let's do it. Nothing matters. Let's make it happen. And I'm 100% get it. It's a check against the idea that the world will collapse if we screw up.
Starting point is 00:37:59 That if we drop the ball, it's over. Kind of pointing to the fact that the only way to truly lose in life, life is to look back and realize we were too scared to live. And so in that context, absolutely, I'm on the nothing matters bandwagon. But here's the deal about this video or podcast episode, however you're consuming it. In a perfect world, it's a buffet, not a menu. It's an opportunity for you to think, to reflect, to pick and choose the pieces here that will help move you along. because after all, you know, we're all walking different paths. So how could one person present a one-size-fits-all solution to anything?
Starting point is 00:38:46 No, the goal is to understand the framework by which we operate. To understand that the thoughts we think have a monumental impact on how we live. And so if you find yourself on the uninspired side of things, know that there's not a problem with you. You just haven't found a path that lights you up. You are perhaps focusing on the wrong things, right? Not leaving space for the right ones. And if you find yourself constantly smothered by the weight of your own expectations,
Starting point is 00:39:24 if every little step, decision, or movement matters too much, know that you are perhaps creating adversaries that don't exist. that you are right where you need to be, but you have to let yourself live, experience life. One of the most beautiful Victor Franco quotes I've ever heard, he says, ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of life is, but rather he must recognize that it is he who is asked. There is so much power packed into this idea.
Starting point is 00:40:03 It's like when you look around and see the outside, world backing you into a corner, dictating to you how things should be, remember that you don't take orders from the external world. You create the external world when all you see is negative. When all you feel are reasons to turn back, when the good in life is hiding away, reach out and find the positive. The one thing that can pick you up and carry you forward. And look, I'm not
Starting point is 00:40:49 advocating that we live in this state of delusion. I'm not saying close your eyes, cover your ears, and pretend everything's great. I'm saying every day, every situation provides at least one thing you need to be
Starting point is 00:41:05 closer to where you want to be. And it just so happens that we're not always inclined to see that. one thing, that solution. It just so happens that we need to become aware to remind ourselves. So this is your reminder to look for it. Your reminder to focus on the things that lift you up, that breathe life into you, not the things that keep you down.
Starting point is 00:41:39 And so here's to finding that sweet spot, right? The walking the line between Victor Frankel's meaning starts with you. And my old pal Steve's mantra, nothing matters, so go live your life. This is not a race. You're not being graded on the outcome here. You're giving yourself permission to experience that jolt you get when you open your eyes as the sun comes up each morning, knowing that how you're about to spend your time will be a product of the game.
Starting point is 00:42:13 product of the game you designed. A game in which, yes, you'll feel lost from time to time. You'll lose that North Star every so often. You'll question the journey you're on. But guess what? When you take responsibility for the circumstance, you also empower yourself to write the ship. You're at the wheel playing the game of life as it was meant to be played on your.
Starting point is 00:42:43 terms. If it does not serve you, let it go. If it doesn't help you move beyond it. As Connman states, our thoughts grossly over-exaggerate that reality on the ground. So let that framework emphasize your passion, your strength and your dreams, not the inverse. What we focus on we get. So believe in yourself with such conviction that those around you look on and wonder what gave you the right to see those things. What made you think it was okay to believe in that which you believe? You never got a permission slip in the mail. You never stumbled upon a permit that granted you access to the good things in life.
Starting point is 00:43:42 No, you just came to understand the game and how it's played. You came to see that we have options. The option to find the bad and the option to find the good. The choice to see why you can't and the choice to see why you will. That's what will separate you from both your past self and those looking on from afar. See, change is never a product of magic as people seem to think. No, most often, it's taking on the challenge of seeing what is not yet there. Stepping into the arena with possibility, with the upside.
Starting point is 00:44:29 So today, see it. Focus on it, lock it in, and don't let go. With everything you have, all different. within you, don't let go. For everything tomorrow can be, for everything you have always been, don't let go. Where some see heroes and others see egos. Bloomberg sees the era of billionaire athletes. While others follow the noise, we follow the money.
