Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to Your World Within Daily. I'm Eddie Panero. And in this episode, we're going to talk about comparing yourself to others. And why your greatest adversary is the person staring back at you in the mirror. So let's talk about comparison. And why using that as a gauge or litmus test to define your own life, your own progress, and your own success. It's just, it's not, well, it's unnecessary. discouraging. And there's a few reasons for that. But I'll back up a second. This comes from Lucas, who says,
Starting point is 00:00:49 Hey, Eddie, hope you're having an amazing week. Could you talk about comparing yourself to those around you in your next podcast? Long story short, there's a place to do it. And it's very small. Like, the 99% rule is don't. It's discouraging. You set your rules. Nothing is more important than your journey, your goal, beating who you were yesterday, your greatest opponent's going to be the one looking at you in the mirror, right? No one that you're comparing yourself to is going to get you up when the alarm clock goes off. No one that you're comparing yourself to is going to make you work. You know, that all comes from you. And not only that, we have a tendency to create narratives and storylines that simply aren't real. Like, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we,
Starting point is 00:01:42 look out and we think that everyone's being success or everyone is successful, everyone is quote unquote succeeding, whatever that means to you, because I think social media has a big role in this, they show their highlight reel. And that's all you receive. Right. You are, you are judging your behind the scenes, your work in progress, as the famous quote says, to the highlight reel of someone else. And that's, it's just not conducive to mental health. It doesn't make you feel good. It's a distraction. That's really what it is. Creates benchmarks that aren't yours. And in fact, you know, the biggest mistakes I've made are looking at, you know, what I think I want or people that I deem successful, right, that I see is at the top of the mountain and I look, you know,
Starting point is 00:02:32 I peek out and I see how they're doing things. And I think, all right, that's the way to do it. I must do it that way. And so I do and I emulate it. And it takes time. And, and it takes time. And, energy to step back and be like, wow, this is not me. You know, back to your lane, man. Back to what you're good at. Back to what makes you happy. What you take pride in. Now, that's zero exaggeration.
Starting point is 00:02:54 Every time I lost my way, it was because I was emulating someone else's success strategy. And guys, we're just running different races. You are not the people to your left or you're right. And so it's like, why even go there? Why tiptoe down that line of, you know, seeing, thinking about what others are doing? It is nothing to do with the goal you set and the actions you're taking today to get there. And in fact, if you can keep your head down and keep marching towards your goal, comparing who you are today to who you were yesterday, and you have the discipline to stay within that lane,
Starting point is 00:03:37 you know, that's where you'll see monumental change. And this all funnels into one big concept that if you're remembering anything or there's any takeaway from this episode, it should be this. Life is not a zero-sum game. And what that means is someone else winning is not a loss for you at all. just like your successes have no impact on other people and their potential. Anyone who exhaust time and energy into something can succeed. There's always room at the top for those who work for it. And to know that frees you up from worrying about things that really don't matter.
Starting point is 00:04:28 Again, we're all running different races. We all want different things. We're all pursuing them in our own unique way. And so getting bogged down by nuance outside of our lane. Again, it's not, it doesn't help anyone. Now, an exception, I believe, this is when I feel like it's okay to pull in other qualities and other things that you want. When there's things you look around and you feel like are admirable in other people. you know like someone's just always so positive or someone just never gossips is an honest person right
Starting point is 00:05:09 or someone just incredible work ethic to see that and think you know what i really appreciate that i respect that i'd love to become more like that i think there's value there in incorporating that into your life but that's just sort of you know looking outside of yourself and understanding who you want to be, right? Life is a progression in that regard. That doesn't mean they're racing against you, and when they win, you lose, and you need to be looking to see what they've done and what the how they, like, nope, none of that matters. If there's positive qualities and you think, you know what, I really appreciate that. I want to be more like that in that area of my life, then that's great. But that's the discrepancy. Long story short, and I'm going to wrap this up, is there's
Starting point is 00:05:53 no one more powerful than you, than those two eyes. looking back at you. That will determine everything. It sets your goals and it gives you the power and the discipline and the strength to bring them to life. Wherever you pull your motivation, the truth will always be the same. That you have the person you were yesterday and the person you were today. You can only be a little bit better, a little bit stronger, a little bit more creative than who you were yesterday. And that should be the focus. that relieves the tension and the pressure to be like anyone other than you, that is where the magic happens.
Starting point is 00:06:38 So appreciate you guys. If you enjoy this podcast, please rate, leave a review. It helps tremendously and keep the questions coming in.
