Your World Within Podcast by Eddie Pinero - You Can't Give What You Don't Have
Episode Date: June 26, 2020In this episode I talk about the idea that you can't give what you don't have. Just like an orange, when squeezed, can only produce orange juice, outside circumstances can only bring out of us what ...already exists. When we change our thought patterns and belief systems, it becomes apparent that the outside world has far less control over our emotional state than perhaps we once thought.

Welcome to Your World Within Daily. I'm Eddie Panero.
And in this episode, we're going to talk about the idea that when it feels like it's the world against you, it's probably you against you.
And we'll talk about a little metaphor that really drives that point home.
So happy Friday. I hope everyone's had a great productive week and feeling good.
But like I said yesterday, I got away for a little bit.
It was in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
And even if I was doing a lot of the same work, it was just great to be in a different environment, different contexts, you know, see my family, different people.
And there's so much liberation, I would say, that comes from a simple change of scenery.
And I think that's why I've moved around so much over the past.
five, six years, actually since college. I've lived all over the place. And it's just such a
refreshing, a refreshing endeavor to see new things and give yourself a blank slate. So anyway, I am
back in the studio, rocking and rolling, feeling good. And I have an interesting topic that,
you know, the beginning of the week, I researched a little bit.
And I went down this rabbit hole per usual and found something pretty cool.
So I want to pass that along to you.
Maybe a couple months back now in a Brunei Brown book.
I found a quote from her.
She said, you can't give what you don't have, right?
Or meaning you can only give what you have.
And as I was poking around, I saw, you know, Wayne Dyer said something very similar.
And he used the metaphor of an orange.
And basically the way he explains this is, look, if you squeeze an orange 10 times out of 10, 100% of the time,
orange juice is going to come out of that orange because that's what it's filled with.
And you'll never squeeze an orange and get grapefruit juice.
It's just not there.
It doesn't matter what the externality is.
Orange juice comes out of the orange.
Okay, we're all on the same page.
that's, you know, very similar to us, right, in the sense that, you know, we have these feelings
that emerge that come out of us, whether it's jealousy, anxiety, anger, you name it, right?
External things happen.
Situations emerge and we feel a certain way and we attribute that feeling to what's going
on around us.
when in reality, if we're not thinking them, if they're not already there, if they're not planted inside of us, it doesn't matter what's happening around us.
You know, we can metaphorically squeeze us all they want, and there's going to be no jealousy or anxiety or anger coming out because it's just not there.
And that's what Wayne says is the difference between people with that awareness and the ability to maintain their emotional state and people that don't.
It's not that they have something special because we all have that same ability to control our thoughts.
It's that they've removed those things that are not conducive to their goals, that do not push them for.
that don't make their lives better.
And, you know, we've talked about it in a few different ways, but it is the cutting away.
It's the simplification of your life.
It's doing what's right for you.
And, you know, I know it's incredibly easy to say, look, you know, just don't be angry.
Don't have anxiety.
Don't be jealous.
And then when things happen, it'll never, right, that's just not the way it works.
but so much of life is an awareness, right?
Think about how powerful is just knowing.
You have this feeling of jealousy anytime situation X occurs.
Think about how incredible it is to know that has nothing to do with them and everything to do with me.
Right?
That's at least a starting point to get you on the path that you need to be, right?
One brick at a time to start working on yourself, chipping away.
I think those things are so incredibly powerful.
Again, it's like there are so many ways to liberate yourself.
And personal responsibility to me is always there.
It's always at the forefront.
And it has many different shades.
It shows itself in many different ways.
It's complex.
But, you know, the ability to say, I'm feeling this not because that happened or because of him
or because of her.
I'm feeling this because there are inadequacies.
There are things in my life that I need to adjust.
It's a pretty liberating thing.
It's an empowering thing.
So remember that.
Nothing is going to come out of you that you don't let in.
That's not already there.
We can only give what we have.
And so the goal is to harness that
and understand how precious that is.
Understand that the thoughts that circulate consistently are what emerges right amidst our day-to-day, our interactions with those around us.
Again, I'll say this every day and I don't think it'll be enough.
You have so much control over your world and your place within it.
And let's never forget that.
Let's ride it to the moon.
All right, guys.
Have an amazing weekend.
I'm trying to get, there's a possibility for an interview Sunday.
So I'm working hard to get that out.
If that doesn't work, obviously Monday morning, we'll be back, you know, per usual, bright and early.
But my hope is Sunday to have something, a bonus interview out there for you.
But have an amazing weekend.
Be safe.
Enjoy yourself.
