Starting point is 00:00:00 Sometimes moving forward takes courage. Like, a lot of courage. Like, more courage than you even think exists within you. But here's the deal. Courage you have, and you have it in spate. I was recently after a long networking event, having dinner with my friend Salara and Eli, and both incredibly,
Starting point is 00:00:36 kind, generous, successful people. And we're kind of catching up as we're eating. And suddenly from across the table, Eli says, Eddie, you know, I feel called to share this story with you. And, you know, obviously I said, please, I'm all ears. And his story started well before he was a mover and shaker in the real estate world. well before he was as confident and polished as he is now.
Starting point is 00:01:14 And he talks about his mid-20s being homeless, right? Living in a hammock behind the local convenience store, scraping together quarters for food, you know, and how some days it was incredibly difficult on his pride. You know, being handed changed by pastors by, Some of them he knew, you know, were struggling just like he was. And one day, Eli decided, you know, I just, I don't want to do it anymore. The pain was too much and hope felt like a mirage.
Starting point is 00:01:56 And so that night, he planned to take his life. And he said he probably would have had it not been for a call with his sister, who convinced him on the phone, to see just one more sunrise. One more sunrise. So he does. The next morning, he wakes up. He's walking through a parking lot.
Starting point is 00:02:29 Someone walking by said to a friend, I love my life. And he said he remembers hearing that and, you know, kind of scoffing and in a mocking manner repeating it back. You know, yeah, I love my life. But as he did, he noticed something. As he repeated those words, he felt good.
Starting point is 00:02:56 For the first time in a long time, even if it was only for a few seconds. But sometimes a few seconds is enough, and this time a few seconds was enough. Enough for him to say, you know, one more day. We'll give this one more day, maybe tomorrow. And tomorrow, as the sun came up, turned into one more day, which turned into another day, which turned into weeks, months, and years where he exists today. Not only incredibly successful, but a sharer of the message. He had a sign made that said, I love my life as a reminder to himself and to help others in the same spot.
Starting point is 00:03:50 I love my life, he said again at the table, looking up with tears in his eyes and a smile on his face. See, when you're in those moments, and trust me, I know how dark they can be, it feels like life is asking you to do more than you can, to pull a rabbit out of a hat or create some unheard of larger-than-life solution. But the truth is in those moments, you simply need to find the courage to continue forward. Into the chaos, one more time. One more day, one more sunrise. Not for what you might find, but for what you might remember, what you already know. That life is beautiful.
Starting point is 00:04:54 That sure, sometimes the skies are painted. gray and the horizon's just not visible from your vantage point. But that isn't an indicator that reality is void of meaning. It doesn't suggest there aren't better days ahead. No, it means you have to put your head down and keep walking right into the storm, right through the chaos, blazing your own trail through the abyss, like you own it. And you won't know why. It'll feel stupid.
Starting point is 00:05:36 At times, yeah, you'll feel alone and helpless. Life will feel desolate. But here's the thing. You can. You are equipped with the courage to count those sunrises. You're armed with the strength to simply walk into the night. Because here's what will happen. There's going to be a point where the rain
Starting point is 00:06:05 and the sky's clear, where everything opens up, the path will make sense and you'll trust more than ever to walk it. You'll have earned that confidence. You'll have seen firsthand that you are capable of moving mountains, not by performing miracles, but by placing one foot in front of the other. Sometimes it's that simple, not easy, but simple. I love my life. Say it.
Starting point is 00:06:40 even when you've forgotten, even when you can't remember why, I love my life. Say it when hope is lost, when the path is unclear, when you look around and wonder if there's anything even worth pursuing, say it, because it will take your hand and lead you forward. That's your Super Bowl. Not a miracle, but that step forward. One more sunrise. And if you can do it now, when the walls feel like they're caving in, and the sky feels like it's crashing down.
Starting point is 00:07:24 You find the courage in this moment. You'll begin that journey into the depths of your soul. The ride to what's ahead. The better days assembled just beyond the confines of the present moment. Often courage is required of us when it's most difficult to reach in and find it. But it's there.
Starting point is 00:07:54 So take it. Allow yourself to be that person you were meant to be. I love. One of my favorite ideas by legendary author and speaker Jim Rohn was, it's not that it costs too much. It's that you can't afford it. And whoa, what a flipping of this script. It doesn't cost too much to someone else out there. There are people who are people who are. who can afford it, you're just not one of them. At least not right now. Why has this had such an impact on me? Well, it's my reminder, first and foremost, to take that finger pointing out at the world,
Starting point is 00:09:06 turn it around and point it directly at my chest. It says, maybe the variable here in need of change is me. Maybe if they can afford it, so can I. Maybe it's not the price that needs to come down. Maybe it's that my value in the marketplace, my skill set, my abilities need to rise. That's not too expensive. I just need to level up. There's nothing like taking what would be a gripe with the world
Starting point is 00:09:47 and transforming it into the very reason you're going to be better. Because really, we always have that choice. We can project out and complain about the ones who scratched and clawed their way to the top, who have more than us, or we can join them. Option one keeps you down, on your back looking up at the sky. Option two places the world in the palm of your hand. So given the choice, don't complain about the price, become someone who can pay.
Starting point is 00:10:26 Don't envy their success. Drive yourself to stand atop a podium of your own making. Don't throw stones, stack them, and make them your foundation. Life is a game of bettering yourself, especially when it's not easy to. You know how much easier it is in the short term to put your feet up and list off all the people who slighted you along the way? Refer to them as the problem. You know how easy it is to find reasons you can't?
Starting point is 00:11:04 To paint worst-case scenarios into the sky? Incredibly easy. It's temporary weight off your shoulders. It's, oh, I can't get to the moon, so, hey, no need to build that rocket ship. What's for dinner? Yeah, that's what we call the easy way out. And while it may feel good in the short term, it doesn't bridge that gap between the cost of what you want and what you're going.
Starting point is 00:11:33 what you want and what you can afford to pay. What it does is justify and rationalize not enough because when you fight for your limitations as the saying goes, you get to keep them. And in a world where victimhood is becoming currency, the more and more people are falling for the illusion of short-term gratification. The temporary peace of mind we get when we defle, When you call yourself a victim, it's not your fault. But when it's not your fault, it's not yours to fix.
Starting point is 00:12:15 And there lies the issue. The name of the game is betterment. It's progress. That's not too expensive. I just need to increase my worth. I need to put myself in a position where I scoff at what was once considered to expensive. I need to build myself up, not wish the world around me was pulled down. And when this switch occurs, life changes. You realize the fluidity of things, that everything is relative.
Starting point is 00:12:55 You can't change the price, but you can change you. And you can do so in a massively substantial you can build yourself up so high that the old you becomes unrecognizable. But the first step is realizing that personal agency opens the door. Accountability and dedication push you through it. That's where the magic is. Becoming so valuable that the externalities are minor details, observers of your assent. It's time to take the ideal
Starting point is 00:13:33 and chip away at it like an axe to a tree. It's time to look at the world, less from a lens of what am I allowed to do, and more from the perspective of, it's all mine if I find the courage to grow into my potential to capture and cash in on my value. Every day you choose to become more valuable and skilled, every time you do the hard thing today
Starting point is 00:14:02 for a greater you tomorrow, expensive means less and less. The price tag is fixed. Your potential, your greatness is not. So rise to the occasion. Tap into U2.0 and prove just how relative cost really is. Sometimes when you don't know where you're going,
Starting point is 00:14:48 The best thing to do is go there. A wise man once stated that an object at rest stays at rest. And while his rationale is a little different than mine, I'm gonna borrow from his premise. Because when you moot, even if you don't know where you're going, you put yourself on a collision course with something. You put into existence an entity to react.
Starting point is 00:15:20 too. Some call it destiny. Others call it fate. I call it simply initiative. Because if your journey is hypothetical, you have nothing to celebrate nor correct. A sailboat can adjust its sails once it leaves the harbor, right? It can learn from and manipulate its surroundings. Make sure it arrives at a destination, right? It learns and adapts along the way. But from the harbor it speculates. It expounds upon a path that might be straighter, might be faster, might be more thought out and tied together than the crazy sailors who took off for the horizon, but in actuality, it goes nowhere.
Starting point is 00:16:10 In the real world, it is stagnant, and I could be wrong, but I'd make the argument ten out of ten times that the real world is where we want our results. And my proof? Well, a journey that started with insurance and evolved into music, in songwriting, in audio production, then video production, and creative writing, then a sweet spot that kind of combined everything. A spot that didn't make its way to my inbox with an exact address. A spot that required a lot of failure and lessons learned and disappointment, but man, more than that, so much fun. My proof is sitting down right now in real time, letting my fingers create a bridge from nothing to something of value. By the way, after sitting here staring at a blank screen for hours, it's just starting.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Could I be wrong? Could I screw up? Could I wildly miss the mark? Yes. In fact, it happens more than I'd like to admit. But here's the beauty, even if I am wrong. I am wrong. I now have something to work with. Something has been brought into existence. And well, that means I'm officially further along than I once was. And I've heard over and over again that there is no perfect moment, that you have to just go. And the idea, I mean, it makes sense.
Starting point is 00:17:44 It's impossible not to understand, but it's one of those things that until you feel it doesn't mean anything. How can you miss something you've never experienced? Well, to put it in a way that help me understand, you aren't going because what do you have to lose? You're going because everything is to be gained. The answers that you pick up along the way, like a little coins you pick up in Super Mario, right? You have to start collecting pieces of a puzzle
Starting point is 00:18:17 that you can then arrange. I truly believe that one of the most important, ideas we need to hold on to moving forward as personal agency, self-belief. And I say that because I feel like I'm watching it slip. There are cases where we literally don't know or understand that it's within our own ability and control to change our lives. No person or group or letter in the mail is going to come along and green light your idea.
Starting point is 00:18:50 In fact, you might not even really know what your idea means or how it will look. And that's not only okay. It's amazing. It's the marble that you get to chisel away at to create something. See, life is not the perfect execution of a plan. Life is the courage to make your way into a world that no one really understands or knows anything about. And I'm not talking physics or biology or quantum mechanics. I'm talking about the real life that is emergent from those areas of study. There is no perfect formula for happiness.
Starting point is 00:19:37 But it will always be true that immobility or standing still is antithetical to progress. And there is plenty of data that supports the idea progress equals happiness. We want to move towards. So that's what this is about. Here's to not being scared of what we don't know. Because somewhere in the realm of what we don't know
Starting point is 00:20:07 exists what we need most. So yeah, stop waiting for the perfect moment. And yes, begin. But not because it's an ultimatum. Do it because the things that make life fun and intriguing and exciting. And ultimately worthwhile, they live on the other side.
Starting point is 00:20:32 I'm your friend. Everything around you has a story. In fact, many stories. And more importantly, our lives are the culmination of these stories. See, we don't identify things through an objective lens. We see them in relation to our individual beliefs, our needs. Strange as it sounds, our lives are almost entirely fiction. They're arbitrary.
Starting point is 00:21:26 When was the last time you got into your car and thought of it there's nothing more than metal in part. Probably not recently. Right? We see it as a gateway to where we need to be. Mobility, freedom. Just like art isn't brush strokes or sonic vibration. It's an emotive escape.
Starting point is 00:21:45 We give meaning to things, and those meanings vary. The world as it exists through our eyes is entirely subjective. You ever wonder how something can be a problem to one person and a solution? to someone else? Or how deeply held political beliefs
Starting point is 00:22:05 can be so contradictory. How can a movie come out and half its critics say it's amazing? The other half say it's subpar. Life is subjective. It's an infinite amount of tiny stories that come together to create our world and everyone that you walk by has their own.
Starting point is 00:22:28 And here's why that's worth discussing. Here's why it matters because we fall into the trap of using these make-believe guidelines. After all, that's what they are to define ourselves. We deem other people's subjective norms as truth. The benchmarks for our own pursuits. Consensus is good, well, then it must be good. They say it's bad, well, then it must be bad.
Starting point is 00:22:54 From the perspective of a creator, one of my most important realizations was that feedback of something I've created or a lack thereof doesn't define the value of the work. I still think some of my best work is essentially undiscovered. Some of the things I've thrown together in 10 minutes have been seen by millions of people, and that doesn't change how I value the work with little recognition. That's just our emotions drawing false conclusions. Here's a different example.
Starting point is 00:23:24 Let's say there's a baker, right? And he's got a bakery in a neighborhood and does great work, right? His shop's been open for a decade, he's been in business. But one day Oprah walks in. Takes a bite, loves it, recommends it. Suddenly his cake is everywhere. Suddenly, they're extraordinary. Same question, right?
Starting point is 00:23:43 What changes about the cake? Nothing. What changes about the baker? Nothing. Excellence lived there the entire time. Did his work become more the second it got a powerful endorsement? No, it was simply recognized. And this understanding, the reason I'm bringing these examples up
Starting point is 00:23:59 is because knowing that is crucial to whatever it is you're trying to build or become in your life. Because these narratives matter. The good, the bad, the ugly, they don't stop coming at you. They don't stop peeking around the corner trying to influence your story. And just because you're not where you want to be yet, just because you haven't seen the external reward, it does not mean you aren't brilliant. It doesn't mean you're not on track towards excellence,
Starting point is 00:24:28 or you're changing the world. Maybe you are that baker before Oprah skips on into the shop. I don't be someone who confuses everyone else's story with reality. That makes it incredibly difficult to take control. A lot of people we call brilliant now, they weren't thought highly of along the way.
Starting point is 00:24:55 In some cases, quite the opposite. And thankfully, they understood the subjectivity of their brilliance. That if you're confident in your voice and your message, if you sacrifice and dive into expertise in an area, the value rises to the surface. Society will adapt and conform to you simply because you didn't bow down to it. There's brilliance there.
Starting point is 00:25:23 It just needs to be believed in and refined. Even when others don't get it, even when it's abnormal, even when your passion receives no validation. See, brilliance manifests itself brick by brick, and it's very easy for passers-by to laugh at that unfinished frame of the house. But eventually, it comes together, and the layout is beautiful, and the architecture is stunning, and your defiance carves a little niche for itself somewhere in the depths of reality. Then the light bulb goes off. Then it's understood. Maybe you were right all along.
Starting point is 00:26:31 Why is this battle you versus you? With all the complexity, all the obstacles out there, why are you your greatest opponent? Well, to put it simply, because all those obstacles and all that complexity still can't tell you no. They can't say enough is enough. They can't look back at you and say, let's just settle for what we have now. No, only you can do that.
Starting point is 00:27:09 The world may create the landscape. It may construct the terrain and those obstacles. But you are the sole decider. on where along the way you stop. You decide how far you want to go and how much you are willing to endure. When it comes to your advancement or limitation, you are in the drivers.
Starting point is 00:27:41 I just picked up a copy of Will Smith's recent book, and one of the ideas that stood out to me was resilience. And this part in the book, it's actually kind of uncomfortable to get through, but incredibly powerful. He's talking about his childhood and the polarity of his father's personality. A man who would do anything to provide for his family,
Starting point is 00:28:05 he took pride in that and saw it as his primary responsibility. But simultaneously was their greatest source of pain. And he mentions his father, hitting his mother from time to time. In one particular example, struck his mother in the face, so hard that it knocked her on the floor. And as she stood back up, she said something along the lines of, you can hit me, but you can't hurt me.
Starting point is 00:28:35 And that was the first time Will understood as a child, the difference between what the outside world inflicts upon us and how we choose to react to that occurrence. That understanding is power. And so why you are the author of your story. In the sense that every single thing dropped at your feet, every situation, every occurrence, they come with an implicit question attached, a question that you and only you are responsible for answering. The question is, what does this mean? And how you respond to that question determines whether you go left or right at that metaphorical fork in the road.
Starting point is 00:29:25 Does the occurrence detract from your ambitions or is it a multiplier? Does it confirm your doubts and insecurities or is it your reason to rise to the occasion? An opportunity to stretch, to evolve. That's a gift. That's an invite. Not some sort of divine punishment. But the challenge is removing the layers until you arrive at the value. And it's hard.
Starting point is 00:29:56 But you get there by saying yes. You get there by choosing to see the value. And here's a quick example. My favorite thing about athletics, which was for me a ton of running. Now I throw more interval training in there, but the same concepts apply. It's a chance to remind myself
Starting point is 00:30:22 that I don't negotiate with my weakness. I don't give myself an opportunity to rationalize with the voice that wants me to quit. That question, that fork in the road, I answered it. I charted its course before the workout started. Knowing this is going to be uncomfortable at times, but it's where I need to go. There will be no more thinking from here on out. And so today's workout, for example, switching, deadlift. spurpees, to squats, to core, you don't think.
Starting point is 00:31:01 You see the next requirement, the next task, and you simply say, yes, you don't need your mind for this. In fact, you go before your mind even knows where it's going. Because that dotted line has already been signed. And that was the breakthrough for me. When you separate what you have to do with the hurt associated with doing that thing, you free yourself. After all, what's there to hold you back if you can't talk yourself out of doing things?
Starting point is 00:31:35 See, we tend to think our greatest adversity is the pain or the confusion or the unknown. But it's like, no, those are the byproducts of doing anything of significance. The adversary is the voice that begs you to slow down because of those things. And if you can figure out in your own, own life, how to create space between the two, how to separate the task and the discomfort
Starting point is 00:32:03 often brought about by the task, there's nothing that will ever be able to slow you down. And look, I'm not saying that you walk around without ever utilizing the power of that brilliant mind you possess. The one's ability to think is everything. But what I am saying is there is a time to shut it off. There is a time in which to avoid overthinking we simplify. Action, reaction. One more mile, okay, end of story.
Starting point is 00:32:35 One minute of jump squats next. Roger that, period. It's taking the emotion out of the process, refusing to leave the door cracked for the inner dialogue that says, hey, maybe you don't do this. Maybe you slow down. Are you sure you can handle what's next? No, all of that is just.
Starting point is 00:32:54 tuned out. It's assignment, go. Next, go. Next, go. You know this is the right thing. You did your thinking before grabbing the sword, shield, and stepping into the arena. Now, guess what? It's instinct. It's doing what has to be done. And what has to be done hurts. And look, you didn't have to accept that. You didn't have to step in. You could have stayed home, but somewhere along the way you looked in the mirror and said, the difficult path is the one with the value. And now here you are. Face to face with hungry lions, clashing swords with your adversaries.
Starting point is 00:33:45 There's no turning back now. Now is when you parse out pain from the objective. The pain is now part. of the audience. It's not with you or in you, it's watching from above as you do what you came here to do. So yes, those swords clash, but the eyes remain focused on what's ahead.
Starting point is 00:34:11 And yes, those lions roar, but that's background noise. When you simplify your world into objective and action, objective, action, objective action, there is time for nothing but forward progress. And sometimes that is all that is required of us. In the face of adversity, in the face of pain, self-doubt, in the face of discomfort, can you break your world down into nothing but one single step forward? One more set, one more rep, one more session, one more attempt,
Starting point is 00:34:52 Just one more. No rocket science, no negotiation. There's nothing to figure out here. It's walking the path before you. It's the discipline to carry on. It's one more swing of the axe. Audience or no audience. Lions are no lions.
Starting point is 00:35:14 You are bound to the universe at your feet. And that simplified concentration is why you're. will succeed. Sometimes I wonder why. Why does this season of life feel like it's one undesirable outcome after another? What happened to the law of averages? When is the wind? Where is the light at the end of the tunnel? Why would I continue going in this direction? When it feels like that spot on the horizon I've been chasing has eluded me. Why? Why are my results not aligning with my output? It's hard to wake up and do this.
Starting point is 00:36:21 It takes all of me to give this much. Sometimes I wonder where is the delayed gratification everyone speaks up? Where's the fruit of my labor, the arm on my shoulder that says this is why it was all worth it? Why hasn't the payoff shown itself? Why? And why does it seem like every curveball materializes at the worst possible time? Why won't my body cooperate now when I need it most?
Starting point is 00:37:00 Why does my mind play with the worst case scenarios? Why does an already challenging path have to be more difficult than it is now? How many ways do I have to feel pain? Why does discomfort follow me around? Why won't life let me shake this? Why? Well maybe, just maybe, it's to show you how strong you are. What you can endure.
Starting point is 00:37:41 Because deep down in your soul, you know you are the 1%. Because if you can push through this, you can push through anything. I don't know why life gives us its lessons when it does. Why the world seems to stack it on when we're at our most vulnerable, when the ground beneath us is most unstable. But if you can find the courage to step back and see this for what it is, if you can hold on to the idea that this is happening for you, you'll come out of this a different person.
Starting point is 00:38:26 You don't need to perform a miracle when you're at your lowest. No, the courage, the power, the strength is in showing up. You need to continue forward. Let go of the week, the month, the year. Sometimes we are tasked with pushing through the moment, the hour, surviving the day. And sometimes there is nothing more courageous than that, nothing more powerful, more powerful than seeing what it turns into down the road when we look over our shoulders and are grateful we never stopped.
Starting point is 00:39:04 So yes, this season might seem like a non-stop barrage of obstacles and misfortune. Why? Perhaps because it's life allowing you to plant your seed now so that when spring comes around you are provided something you've never had before. before you arrive at that spot in the horizon you've been aiming at and yes the results might not feel like they're aligning with your output why perhaps because when the compounding reaches that magical point that point of statistical significance and the desirable things happen then as quickly as the difficult ones do now
Starting point is 00:39:52 it'll all make sense you'll appreciate it evaluate it and be equipped to handle it. And yeah, life might seem to be throwing you curveball after curveball. Why? Perhaps because if you can trudge forward now, when your body's tired while navigating the trials and tribulations of life, when you can bring greatness into existence under duress, just imagine what waits around the corner. Imagine how you'll perceive those seemingly impossible obstacles that slow everyone else down. There'll be nothing more than a cool breeze and a sunny day as you move towards your best self.
Starting point is 00:40:40 Look, it's hard to understand when we are in it. It's hard to make sense of the dark and the chaos and the hurt, but find a way to remember. No matter how hard it seems that this life is happening, for you and not to you. This is the seed in the palm of your hand that will mean something that matters. So hold on. Hold on to see that seed begin to rise from the ground. Hold on to feel the warmth of the sun.
Starting point is 00:41:18 Hold on through the storms of life. They will be why when you look back years from now. years from now, you'll have gotten from life that which was once merely a dream.
