You're The Voice | by Efrat Fenigson - From Burma to Freedom: Why Bitcoin Is a Human Rights Tool - Wing Ko Ko Aung | Ep. 143
Episode Date: June 10, 2026Win Ko Ko Aung was born in Burma (Myanmar) in 1993 and grew up under military rule, shaped by a country still reeling from the 1987 overnight demonetization that wiped out his parents' generation&...#39;s savings. A tech entrepreneur and youth educator, he entered the Bitcoin space in 2019 as a way to preserve economic energy in a country with few reliable financial options. When the 2021 military coup froze the bank accounts of activists and democracy supporters, including his own, his Bitcoin holdings remained untouchable and became his lifeline out of the country. He crossed the jungle from Burma into Thailand without a passport, eventually reaching the United States as a political refugee. Today he works at the Human Rights Foundation, where he has taken part in educating over 1,400 activists and journalists worldwide on Bitcoin, financial freedom, and privacy tools. Win shares how financial oppression operates as a weapon of authoritarian control and why Bitcoin is the most important human rights technology of the 21st century. → Please like, comment, share & follow — to help me beat the suppressing algo's. He donated like $10, got 10 years in the prison.
I used to have over 500,000 followers on social media.
Did you?
I deleted.
From fear of being...
Yeah, my family's sick.
Actually, I crossed the Janger from Burma to Thailand, and I got to Bangkok.
Did you come to the United States as a refugee?
Yes, political refugee.
Of September 1987, the Burmese military announced progesterone vinyl radio,
and they said 75 NMRC, 35 NMRC, 25 NMRC are not eager tender anymore.
So they cancelled money.
They cancelled money and suddenly it became like monopoly paper.
That is actually a very effective strategy for detainees worldwide.
And they systematically use it, repeatedly use it.
There is a silent oppression.
It's going to get even worse when they have CBDCs and access to digital money.
Unfortunately, a lot of countries are actively working on it.
Buying Bitcoin is actually, you know, you're participating in peaceful and silent revolution.
Buying Bitcoin is more than an investment for billions of people around the world.
Your buying Bitcoin could repair effect in the other side of the world.
hello and welcome to another episode of you're the voice from vegas bitcoin 2026 conference day
three actually towards the end of day three we're almost at the end of the show it's been an amazing
three days go go go i have the honor here to sit with my friends win coco on yeah hey win how are
you incredible exciting it has been amazing you know our three-day bitcoin conference and i'm
glad that you know we were able to make it out you know your last uh you know our podcast here
in the bitcoin conference but not least that's right it is definitely not least and i also have
a feeling we'll be doing this again yeah i wanted my audience to be familiar with you and your story
because i think your background and what you went through to get to where you are today is a very
unique journey and i think a lot of people get inspired by that you also your story also appears
in a way in natalie brunel's book bitcoins for everyone which i read which is great and i highly
recommend and yeah you're there in the part that talks about human rights and so i'd love for you
to share with our audience a little bit about your upbringing in burma and how you watch the
financial crisis and the political changes that were happening in the country kind of repeat
themselves and what did that do to your understanding of money yeah uh so thank you for
you know uh giving giving me a platform to share this kind of like a story because yeah i was born
in Burma and also known as Myanmar so i think my the country i was born in is the only country that
has officially two lakes two names Myanmar and Burma Myanmar is being you know uh well-known
life you know in united nations and many asian countries but in the western world and democratic
society we use perma yeah so i mean there's a lot of long story uh very yeah i mean
unfortunately it's that because like we have been going on the world's longest civil war right now
so yeah i was born in 1993 so i grew up you know half of my life basically i grew up
under the military regime it was kind of like you know high censorship political instability
but I was just a happy kid you know I yeah I had a privilege to grew up in the Yangon which is the
largest city in the country and I had access to the education but access to education is like
by default, you know, by government standard at the time.
And yeah, so before I was, I was born in 1993,
but before I was born, my current generation,
they have gone through the biggest crisis,
financial crisis that most English media
or English speaking world international community
might not be aware about.
Because even today in 21st century, I search on internet,
there's a very few English article wrote about it
and research about it.
That one was overnight demonetization policy in 1987.
So at that time there was no internet,
obviously there was not a lot of banking infrastructure,
not a lot of financial infrastructure.
So my parent generation, they work, they run a business,
not only my parents, like their entire generation,
and they save their economic power in the fiat currency,
if you are average Burmese person in Burma at that time.
Why?
Because access to finance is extremely difficult
and very limited, so they save their money in safe,
they save their money under the mattress.
In 1987, in September, 5th of September, 1987,
the Burmese military announced broadcasted vinyl radio
and they said 75 NMRJ, 35 NMRJ, 25 NMRJ
are not eager tender anymore.
Aha, they canceled the notes.
Yeah, they basically canceled it.
So they canceled money.
They canceled money and suddenly
it became like Monopoly paper.
So imagine, if you are a regular person,
you just mind your own business,
you save money, maybe better future for your children
or better future for yourself.
Yes.
Suddenly, the dictator, they said,
hey, you know, all this currency
are not legal anymore.
So you cannot use it.
So what are you going to do?
Like, I mean, that's like a trauma
that my parents' generation have.
So people became hungry, like homeless, whatever.
Yeah, I mean, you lost everything, you know?
You lost everything.
That's like 25, 35, 75, they are like a high-level node.
There's a small node like one year, five year, that was all capped.
So all the top nodes were canceled, so that's most of the capital that people held.
And there was a, you know, the good thing is there was a one research paper I found,
I found that, you know, there was a one research paper.
So basically at the time, 80% of Burmese population lost almost everything or everything of their
economic power and I was born in 1993 so my generation was born into poverty by default.
So I did not choose to be born in that situation but you know nobody choose it and so the point
is think about it and the more I learn about this financial oppression you know all these
dictators they use financial system to humanize democracy.
not only in Burma. This is just now happening in Iran, the same thing. Yes, Iran, Turkey, Lebanon,
North Korea, China, and also Soviet Union. You know, I spoke with, you know, people from Russia,
you know, they basically also lost, their parent generation lost everything because of the Soviet
Union collapse. So, and then like, if I say, oh, 1987, you might probably think, oh, you know,
oh it happened in 21st century. Back then, today is different. Today is different, oh we like open society,
internet, you can say that but it's still happening just in front of our eyes. Uh-huh. So in 21st century
you know I'm talking about 20th century but so but think about it so if you're a regular person
in those kind of country, rural society, will you fight for human rights, democracy, freedom
or will you just you know mind your own business and to rebuild your life where i mean 99 percent
of people will go for this you know option option two we cannot blame that because obviously this
is a human nature people have to pay the rent people have to put their food on the table yeah
so that is actually very effective strategy for dictators worldwide and they systematically use it
repeatedly use it. Unfortunately, for some reason, I think we need to more
forget about this financial freedom even in the 21st century. I think Bitcoin is
kind of like one of the best hope for billions of people around the world.
Going back to this financial oppression, in 2021, there was a military coup in our whole country,
my home country in Burma in Burma there was a military coup there was another political crisis
yes of course Burmese military they violate they violate human rights abuse on the street
they arrest activists journalists they put people behind the bar international media yes they talk
about it but there is a silent oppression which is everyone who donated to democracy because like
some people they don't want to hit the street they just okay you know correct you know i support they
want to be behind this yeah behind the scenes yeah they donate from their fiat bank account
what happened they got traced down and they got arrested there's a there was a one example you
know the donators got arrested they like to go arrested so there was a one person like he donated
like 10 got 10 years in the prison no you're serious thousands of it happened and then
like either you got arrested or your bank account got frozen so which is the stuff that we're
starting to see in places like canada with the truckers yes convoy i mean you know what i mean
it's happening in 2021 yes yes so yeah and it's a western country western country yeah so by
definition right so so think about those kind of close society that most media you know sort of
less pay attention. There are thousands of people who participated in democracy movement.
I was one of them. I promote peaceful democracy movement. Peaceful democracy movement and
I also lost my bank account. They froze my bank account. Of course, the majority of my
fear saving are in fear bengal but at the time i had bitcoin and cryptocurrency did you already
yeah okay you know i had i had it like in 2020 because i got it into 2019 okay you know why
because at the time i was running my own business and i was you know running education project for
technology view empowerment you know people environment so yeah basically i was like you
know running my own startup so that's great you know i'm like you know i love entrepreneurship so
but the thing is the question is work feeding love feeding because i want to preserve my economic
energy correct how do i preserve it in my home country most people they buy car a car yeah not
real estate a car yeah because like cars like more accessible it's not that expensive yeah and also
a so-called utility value yeah and it can demonstrate your social class uh-huh so if you
have a car that's like certain level social class and utility values right you can use it to get
around because another reason people invest in car is car is appreciated yes in premier sphere
currency really so like in the western world like the stable currency you know usd canadian dollar
or Euro, you name it, car is a liability and depreciates. So yeah, people just use it to
as a utility value, not as a store of value, except for special limited edition or whatever.
But most generally speaking, people don't use car as an investment. But environment is a different
story because we measure with our own fiat currency and our own fiat currency depreciate
faster than the car value and most of the car are not brand new they are second-hand car
so imagine about the currency devaluation and gold yeah you can buy gold but
you can buy it but you cannot sell forward back to via currency yes that is selling it hard yeah
selling hard you know a lot of stuff and they they don't use that so like a digitalization
of verification process most jewelry shop gold jewelry shop they use physical paper so like
sometimes your what is your physical receipt loss and you cannot even convert to stuff like that and
then we don't have stock market okay so like in america you can buy tesla or microsoft and then
stocks yeah stop forget about it and then 10 years later you might reach if you're complete
outperform the market or things like that so that's why i am most oh and also 30-year mortgage
in america you have 30-year mortgage but in my home country if you have money buy a real estate
if you don't have bye-bye don't buy it so if you don't have the capital you cannot have a mortgage
yeah so that's that's a business so i mean there's a lot of limitations so which is why
you know i i was like exploring how to diversify my work and yeah a friend of mine
you know recommended me and bitcoin and cryptocurrency i said bitcoin and cryptocurrency
specifically because back in the day i diversify not only bitcoin because what if they quite fail
what if bitcoin goes to zero you know i research on the internet english media they talk about it
bitcoin volatile bitcoin might be the biggest scam in a human civilization so
So I try to hedge us about it, hedge about it, diversify everything because, oh, somebody
in English language tell me to diversify it because somebody in English language say they
quite might be a scam.
So probably true.
I don't know.
So I diversify it.
That's like a lot of thing happen.
That's like my, you know, my old life, you know, sort of like a economic preservation
strategy.
And 2021, let's go back to 2021, four years ago, and then they freeze my bank account
along with other prominent activists, journalists, non-profit leaders, regular people, thousands
of people.
Obviously, English media doesn't report about it, but that's fine.
I will appreciate if they reported more.
But the point is that I lost maybe 90, 95% of my fear saving and all my fear saving,
I will say 100% of my fear saving, 95% of my entire work.
And you stay with the Bitcoin and the crypto.
Cryptocurrency, but they cannot touch about it.
They cannot touch about it.
And yeah, I was.
And did you then leave the country?
Yeah, I had a privilege to leave the country.
Because actually, I crossed the Janger from Burma to Thailand and I got to Bangkok.
Did you cross the border legally or was it allowed to do?
So, I did not use passport.
Okay, so how did you do it?
Ever find yourself needing cash but refusing to sell your Bitcoin?
That's real life for many Bitcoiners.
Because most Bitcoin sales aren't financial decisions, they're liquidity decisions.

lost more than half a million dollars to providers making empty promises. Instead of walking away,
they built a company that raises the industry standard and puts client first, and that's why
I like them. With Abundant Mines, you own your machines. They never touch your Bitcoin, never
skim a revenue share, and you choose your own mining pool. Their customer care is unusual. Clients

so there yeah there is there's a there's a some sort like a people who said human like got it
like a messenger yeah messenger so so like that's how my grandma crossed the border between uh
france to switzerland belgium to france to switzerland during the second world war with
people that would help and you know a lot of this book yeah and on top of that i was a wanted person
yeah so if i cannot leave for are you scared yes of course which is why you know uh i mean there's
a political persecution of of course and also there's a lot of people there's a lot of people
who got arrested yeah at night they usually arrested at night and then in the border they
that body to their parents yeah next day within 24 hours wow so they could have caught you and
you could have been arrested yeah i would not be here you know i might not be here so you would
have been sitting in prison for the rest of your life or i might probably get you know i i might
probably die probably did that there's a lot of a lot of cases yeah does it happen today where they
kill a lot of people yeah i mean uh and i reported and i reported of course uh language barrier
you know uh less media attention so that's that's another thing and yeah but i mean
you know i'm i'm extremely privileged for someone who grew up in burma and you know up you know
after 2021 which is you know i'm here which is why i can share this story that most people do not
pay attention or you know enter attention to your your channel you know i truly appreciate it because
you know there's a there's a 50 million people you know total population of five zero 50 million
population 50 million in bourbon yeah so he is struggling and suffering bitcoin is the best hope
the biggest hope now like even the inflation is like a 500 percent since 2021 uh-huh correct
It's a life changer. Is your family still there?
Yeah, my mother. Your mother?
Yeah, my mother stayed there. And I used to have over 500,000 followers on social media.
Did you?
I deleted it. I deleted it.
You deleted your account?
Yes, I deleted it.
From fear of being...
Yeah, my family said.
I started all over again in America. I met with my boss, Alex Glaston, in 2022, in California,
and then…
Did you meet him in the United States as a coincidence, or you reached out to the
Human Rights Foundation, which is where you work now, for those who don't know?
Right, right, right. So, you know, I'm totally aware about this, you know, activities
on the internet.
You knew of the HRF.
I did not reach out because I thought okay you know he's like yeah high-level person you know
but yeah there's a someone you know I I bet into and then he said he he he really want to set up
set you up with you know uh glass stain so do you know dressing yeah I know and then you know
then and yeah they connect connect us on twitter at the time we called twitter but today x and bad
and then he hired you yeah we met in person amazing in 20 it was like 2022 so right and
then i joined uh human rights foundation as an intern he started as an intern as an intern
2023 right now uh you know today today you know i'm like uh educating advocating uh bitcoin ai
freedom technology three member of leader activist journalists worldwide uh we educated over 1400
you know uh activists all around the world last year a year last year yeah do you love what you do
definitely truly rewarded journey if you know i could refuse it i will i will say you know my
own version of american dream as an immigrant here did you come to the united states as a refugee
yes political refugee political refugee was it difficult to receive that status yeah i mean at
At that time, in Bangkok, I reached out to different people and I was recognized as Southeast
Asia Youth Leader by the United States Education Department back in 2018.
So I traveled to the United States in 2018 and I teach internet education to Southside
Chicago.
Southside Chicago is a community that has a lot of underprivileged, you know, American and
and I witnessed about it basically I talked about internet education to this kind of community so
and then I returned to Burma in like late 2018 and so 2019 I was in Burma you know bringing my
american experience and green thicker impact 2020 kobe and 2021 military could happen so
in 2020 when i left burma in april so in april so and i reached out to you know um different
you know people who could yeah i mean because who because like i even at the time i do not
even have a passport on my hand so yeah uh someone uh someone supported so now you have an american
passport uh but uh there's a special visa yes uh so currently i'm in like a green card uh-huh
green card yeah and when you moved from i mean took yourself from burma to thailand was thailand
but like were were they okay with you did they ask questions did they how was it in thailand so
basically i crossed border so i did not take away any type of thought uh-huh so i was in bangkok
you were not reported so they did not know that you were there okay and how long did you say i i
leave thailand okay got it so you were doing everything safely and securely because otherwise
they could have maybe give you back to yeah they go have like they go have like uh to hold me back
to burma and but uh i'm i'm saying it from my privileged position because maybe uh maybe one
thing is my international community maybe one of them is maybe uh uh language uh jewish language
ability so i i recognize my privilege out there and those privilege helped me to get to the united
stay, keep continue this freedom-type advocacy because I think this is an extremely important
technology for the 21st century. Those like 1987, you know, 1991 in Soviet Union,
they did not, you know, they did not stop in 20th century. It's even happening in 21st century.
I agree with you 100%. It's happening bigger. 100%. And it's gonna get even worse when they have
cbdc's and access to digital money unfortunately a lot of countries are actively working on it
absolutely and it's already rolled out in some places wow what a story oh my god i have so many
questions for you so yeah i'm also honored to represent i mean this why is not my voice i mean
this boy is represent this wise represent you represent the people yeah millions of people
you know are from my home country and other billions of population around the world that
Or in the same situation.
You will not have the ability to go back to Burma, right?
Yes, of course.
It's too much of a risk.
Yeah, I do not have the ability to go back to Burma.
I really hope you will reunite with your family at one point if they come, if they manage to leave.
I prefer, yes.
Wow. Okay. So now that you are putting all your time and energy on educating young people and activists around the world about financial freedom, about financial tech, about freedom tech, what are some of the most important tools or strategies that you start with when you start educating them?
Yeah, so I think, you know, when you talk, when you speak about Bitcoin, like, you know,
you're going to have to like, you know, hey, take some time, let's get a coffee.
Because like, almost everywhere, at the first glance, as soon as I speak about Bitcoin,
they go, oh, this guy is going to send me a crypto token, you know.
They all think it's a get rich fast thing.
Yeah, get rich fast.
I think Bitcoin is a human rights technology, and also it helps you to prevent going to get poor.
It's not going to get rich with technology. But if you save in fiat currency,
100% guarantee, your currency is getting devalued, inflated, or in the worst case scenario,
your government will or your you know authoritarian government will demonetize it overnight sure with
bitcoin okay yeah you know if you always measure with usd fear yeah there will be always volatile
but you look at the history of bitcoin how many times it has been hacked how many times the network
has been down so since like 2009 you know it has been from like only two years up peer-to-peer two
use that to millions of population and it's happening you know incredible campaign like a
lot of incredible campaign democracy needs to be worldwide yeah democracy movement is like
actually expensive you know if you want to do democracy movement if you want to do that protest
it is expensive it is not free because like you're going to have to gather a lot of people
you're going to have to spend your time you're going to go there like maybe transplanting
But what if one day, okay, you know, your authoritarian government says, okay, we don't
like those kind of people, yeah, just switch off the bank card.
They just click that, you know, one button from their in front computer or maybe their
phone, whatever, touchscreen, you know, they can do it.
And then your democracy movement goes overnight.
So but what if you have an economic energy, financial power that nobody can stop?
So this is the idea of Bitcoin.
Nobody can stop.
So this is the idea of Bitcoin.
So this is why I'm trying to put this message forward.
Let me take you one step further.
I want you to help me.
Let's take, for example, Ireland.
The people of Ireland right now are in the streets protesting against the introduction of a new digital wallet plus a digital ID.
It's a new wallet that is being introduced in Ireland as the first country in the EU zone,
okay? And many people are awake to the dangers and the risks of this technology,
and they know that this could enslave them because this is a connection between
their permission and digital identity to the CBDC that will come out soon in the Eurozone.
and what they do is they protest they write social media posts they
yell at politicians this is what they do but that can take it take them that far
right what would you recommend those people who are really trying to fight for their financial
sovereignty for their sovereignty online for their right to voice their opinions to not use
any government surveillance technology in their lives, what would you recommend them to do? I
tried to tell them about Bitcoin. It's very hard. How would you approach it?
Yeah, definitely. So my strong recommendation is please seriously consider Bitcoin as a form of
technology, as a form of sovereign truth. Yes, of course, you know, it's easy to get
over what you just go to google or youtube yeah you see all those articles yeah like like i mean
90 of you know bitcoin content usually okay you know uh negative say hi yeah i don't say hi or
negative you know and but you know my strong recommendation is go to www.hrf.org and then
you will see our education bitcoin education webinar we call it financial freedom webinar
beautiful yeah and click sign up click register today and then we uh we ran four times a year
like every quarter we were okay uh what's every quarter and we it's like a three-day bitcoin
webinar yes so one and a half hour a day so you know three day and then within three days first
day we go to educate about what is you know uh bitcoin human right the relationship between
bitcoin and human right with the real global youth cases real global use cases and second
day and third day, we demonstrate about how to basically access to Bitcoin, how to store Bitcoin,
and how to basically use in the real world. How to remain as private as you can.
Yeah, how to remain as private as you can. We also definitely teach the private, what kind of
Bitcoin tools to use as a private payment and transition for privacy purposes.
Like what kind of wallets or what kind of different apps?
yeah what kind of wallets and how to do it how to do it is that because yes of course like not just
the theory but yeah we believe in Bitcoin technology but still you know there's a lot
of application and how to use it also I believe like you know in foreign states because like
tutorials kind of like you do hand-on tutorial yes I know you also collaborate with BTC sessions
yes BTC sessions is an amazing person the most amazing educator out there so people can
He joined our webinar, he volunteered our webinar and, you know, he donated his time to demonstrate, you know, how to use all this new Bitcoin application and technology.
I love it. I love it. Excellent. Great advice. Thank you so much for that.
Okay. What do you want people, especially Bitcoiners in free countries, to understand about what Bitcoin actually means for someone in your position?
What do you want them to know?
Yeah, so buying Bitcoin is actually, you know, you're participating in peaceful and silent
revolution.
So if you are a Bitcoiner in, you know, America or first world country, I would say, you know,
please keep buying Bitcoin, please keep DCA or do what you keep doing it because your
network effect actually strengthen for billions of people the other side of the world.
Totally.
I think that's a very important message.
Win, anything else you want to add before we wrap up?
Yeah, thank you.
You know, incredible.
Thank you.
Appreciate it.
Everybody can be a human rights activist.
How do you do that?
Just by Bitcoin.
Yes.
You can also mine Bitcoin.
Yes, mine Bitcoin as well.
Another way that you can get it.
Yeah, we could get another podcast for that.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Win, thank you so much.
Where should people find you and follow you or engage with you?
