Digital ID plus money plus social media access all running through one government app is a recipe
for disaster. In April 2026 Ireland launched a pilot for its government digital wallet. A state
run app to store IDs, birth certificates, driver's license and more. France is going to ban under 15
year olds from social media by september this year denmark spain greece are all following
18 million records were stolen the attacker exploded a vulnerability so basic they called
it really stupid now that's roughly one-third of france's entire population here's the framework i
use sovereignty operates on three levels in bitcoin we talk a lot about self-custody
private keys, and removing intermediaries from our financial lives.
But today I want to reframe what that actually means
and extend the logic beyond money.
Bitcoin is proof that resistance to control is possible.
Much the same way we resist with our money,
we can resist with our identity, with our voice, and values.
This stock offers a sovereignty framework.
I want to share with you a sovereignty framework that I've created in the last few months.
Where it starts, where it breaks down, and what to do about it.
So I'm Afrat. I'm the host of Your The Voice podcast. Thank you guys for knowing that.
I'm an independent journalist, a digital nomad in the last two or so years,
and a public speaker.
I've spent 20 or so years in my corporate career in tech and marketing
and the last several years building independently.
Now, the thing that shifted my thinking was one question.
With Bitcoin, you may have self-custody of your money,
but what about your voice, your identity, your distribution?
your ability to speak, to transact, to exist online.
Most of us are more exposed than we think.
A few years ago, I decided that my voice would be my career.
Yes, voicing views and knowledge
that oftentimes is considered controversial
or carries inconvenient truths.
I wanted to be independent, and I thought I was,
But then reality showed up. I experienced a lot of censorship.
You know, this is building up on what Eugene has experienced with his movie that you have just seen now
and what Paul Rosenberg was talking about as well.
Let me share with you my last year alone. We're going to go through all of these.
credit cards are very unreliable and as a digital nomad i need access to money wherever i am
multiple credit cards because i never want to get stuck with like one not working or they get
declined and i always have money in the bank to cover for this credit um but the credit card
companies visa mastercard american express they can do whatever they want so they give you
permission to use your money, especially when you're overseas. It's arbitrary. Sometimes they
approve transactions, sometimes they don't. And that's why I have like three or four different
credit cards to always have another one as backup. Yes, I've been stopped a lot with money in the
last couple of years. Now also Stripe. Do you know Stripe? Yes, Stripe, the payment processing
company blocked me due to their KYC policy. And no, I did not commit any crime.
Being kicked out of Stripe. This is the platform I'm using to get payments for my blog on Substack.
I don't comply with the KYC of Stripe. All my paying subscribers on Substack,
I have to move them to another platform. I've got Bitcoin. That's why we have Bitcoin. I think
I'm going to migrate them to Zaprite, offer them Bitcoin payment or fiat payment.
And so I did.
I started working with ZapRite.
ZapRite people are here, I know that.
And I accept payments directly from my supporters, Bitcoin and fiat, with no intermediary in the middle.
I said bye-bye to Stripe and to their paid subscription model of Substack and went direct to my supporters.
Then Telegram deleted my account with 8,000 followers on two channels overnight without
any explanation, no human to speak to, trolling Pavel Durov on X didn't help.
I was stuck in this AI customer service, right, AI customer service doom loop.
I've just been banned out of Telegram.
Why?
I have no fucking clue.
And now I'm talking to a bot.
So I file a complaint, and the first time they rejected my complaint,
and so I filed a second time, and now they're thinking about it.
Mind you, I have two channels on Telegram,
one with 6,000 followers, one with 2,000 followers.
I'm always expecting to be banned or deplatformed from somewhere
for some reason, and that's why I am decentralized
and I have presence in so many different platforms,
exactly for these situations.
I already have Nostr,
which is a decentralized protocol
with a lot of apps,
and I'm there,
and I can't be censored there.
Right, so instead of Telegram,
I put all my energy
into building my community on Nostr,
an audience I will not lose
as long as I hold my keys.
Woo!
Where are the Nostriches?
Yeah!
noster is the next frontier protocol for freedom tech this clip is from one of my latest podcast
episodes with a freedom tech expert there is an open source decentralized protocol for content
information and this is where i have putting a lot of my time and energy instead of being on telegram
Way better than X.
This is great.
This is one way to implement social network outside of the big tech.
So a lot of companies have created their own apps on the Noster protocol.
You can see I have 10,000 followers on Noster.
The brilliant thing is if Primal for any reason gets closed down or the app doesn't work anymore,
I can take my 10,000 followers, which is called my social graph, and go to any other Noster-based
app and sign in with my private key. That's my digital identity, right? I own it, not the state.
So my follower base goes with me. This is a censorship-resistant protocol. I also have a
Lightning wallet attached. You see those things here? They're money. They're Bitcoin Lightning
zaps this is super super cool it's it comes a long way but i really think now things are really
shifting it's like we're being pushed there we don't have any other option yeah you're hearing
we don't have another option so we're not done six months ago
substack locked me out of my blog for three weeks why because i went to australia and australia has
a new law called the Online Safety Act, which requires you to do age verification and to show
your digital identity if you want to access big tech platforms. Obviously, I refused to do that.
And actually, they also self-imposed that law on themselves. They're not on the list of companies
that have to do it, but they did it. So I was locked out. And after three weeks, when I left
Australia and I thought I will be released from digital prison. I was not. I was still restricted.
So I made a video. That's all I can do. Use my voice. I made a video that went viral and my story
ended up on Sky News. Once again, this time with Substack. Let me tell you the story. Request
an ID for age verification, because if you're under 16, we want to protect you. The state is
our babysitter, right? And I get this pop-up saying, show us your ID. We need to see that
you're over 16. No, I'm not going to show you my papers in order to access my blog.
I'm now locked out of my livelihood and my job, basically. Yep. Eventually, after social media
pressure and people sending my story to US government officials, my account was restored.
but I know it's just a matter of time until it happens again.
Now, we're not done yet, but that's the last one for now.
There were many more.
Last week, LinkedIn decided I broke the community policy
on restricted goods and services,
so they took down a post I made.
Turns out that educating people on self-custody with Trezor
is comparable to a long list of illegal stuff,
which I won't say here to not risk even more censorship on YouTube later.
The irony.
The understanding that I don't own my audience,
my distribution, the channels,
and hence part of my income, hit hard.
Because if I don't own those, I don't really own my voice.
I am building on systems that I do not control.
I'm operating under someone else's permission.
And we take it for granted.
We think and we act as if this default is okay.
But is it?
Each time I was censored, it happened at the same point.
An interface with a centralized system.
A platform.
A payment gateway.
way, an identity landlord.
These are all control points.
The more interfaces you have with systems you don't control, the most exposure and risk
you carry.
That's true for an individual like me, for activists and for journalists, and it's equally
true for businesses that rely on one payment processor, a company running its entire customer
communication through Meta or Google, an app under the mercy of the App Store, or an institution
whose treasury sits entirely in fiat rails under the hands of banks that can block or
debank at will.
Every dependency is a gate, and someone else holds the keys to those gates.
But these dependencies are by design.
dependency has a business model behind it. Banks profit from holding your money,
payment processors profit from every transaction, big tech profits from your
content, your audience, your data. Governments accept IMF loan conditions
that dictate climate and sustainability policies. Entire economic agendas are
shaped by the IMF, the World Bank, and the Bank of International Settlements,
corporations adopt ESG frameworks, not out of conviction,
but because BlackRock and its peers gate capital behind compliance.
So before we go further, here's the framework I use.
Sovereignty operates on three levels.
spiritual who you are your values your mission where your line is digital what you actually
control your keys your platforms your rails and your data physical how you live where you operate
what dependencies do you carry in the real world every control point we're going to talk about
falls into these three layers, and the framework applies at every scale, individual, institutional
organizations. So the real question for everyone in this room is not, do you hold or use Bitcoin?
It's how sovereign are you, really? How many control points are you still exposed to?
Count your interfaces.
That's your risk profile.
Bitcoin solved the first and hardest problem, self-custody of money.
No bank, no permission, no intermediary.
But to me, Bitcoin is a proof of concept.
A proof that a system can exist where no single actor can arbitrarily revoke your access.
However, money is only one layer.
Identity, voice, values, distribution channels, infrastructure, all of these still rely on intermediaries.
Here in Europe, we're watching the ECB, the European Central Bank, build permissioned infrastructure for the digital euro, a CBDC, all on rails that they control.
So let's dive deeper into identity, because what's being built here in the EU with Ireland as the guinea pig is the best example I can give you.
In April 2026, Ireland launched a pilot for its government digital wallet, a state-run app to store IDs, birth certificates, driver's license, and more.
The government's pitch sounds reassuring.
You're in control of your data.
Nothing is tracked or recorded.
It makes life simpler.
That is, what I'm saying now is real, even though I'm saying it cynically.
This is what they say in their advertising.
Aren't they saying that about every surveillance platform before it becomes mandatory?
story? Ireland is legally required to have the wallet available and accepted across public
services by the end of this year, 2026, and extended to private sector by the end of 2027.
But for citizens, it's voluntary. For now. Right? And remember, voluntary always has
an expiry date. Now, look at what's arriving at the same time. The digital euro. Pilots
will roll out in 2027, official launch in 2029. Ireland's communication minister has proposed
requiring the digital wallet for social media access. You will need this app to go into your
Facebook, Instagram, or X. Ireland's wallet is built on the EUDI, which is the European Digital
ID framework, and every EU state must roll it out by the end of this year. Some countries will,
some countries will be late, but in the end of the day, they will all implement it, no doubt about it.
Now, digital ID plus money plus social media access, all running through one government app,
is a recipe for disaster. Once your identity and your money live in the same state-controlled
infrastructure, every transaction can be permitted. Or not permitted. Censorship is not limited to
content only. It actually starts with identity, because if you can control someone's identity,
you control their access and their ability to function. For individual, it leads to verification
walls, censorship, like me. For businesses, you see it in KYC compliance pressure, top-down
coercive global agendas such as ESG and DEI. For institutions, it shows up in regulatory capture,
government policies. A good example for that is, in fact, the CBDC. The battlefield is controlling
your identity at every level. That's the layer of the framework. But identity pressure also shows up
in the physical layer, where you can operate, which countries recognize you, which infrastructure
you're allowed to use.
Remember this slide from my last year's talk.
The World Economic Forum envisioned your digital ID
in the center of your life,
essential to accessing modern financial systems
and interwoven into everyday life.
If the state knows who you are and what you do,
they allow you to function.
Here's the sequence being built around your digital ID step by step.
Step one, chat control.
Governments push to scan private messages,
a voluntary version passed in November 2025.
Step two, age verification.
The EU's app launched in April 2026.
France is going to ban under 15-year-olds
from social media by September this year.
Denmark, Spain, Greece are all following.
Step three, VPNs.
EU commissioners warned that the system must not be circumvented and France's digital
affairs minister said VPNs are next on my list.
If these proposals become law, private internet access will effectively be illegal in Europe
and privacy tools criminalized under the banner of child protection.
The argument for centralized digital ID assumes that the state is a competent and benevolent
custodian of your most sensitive data.
France just proved both assumptions wrong in one afternoon.
Two months ago, the agency handling every French passport, national ID, driver's license
and vehicle registration was breached.
18 million records were stolen.
The attacker exploited a vulnerability so basic they called it really stupid.
Now that's roughly one third of France's entire population.
Their birth data, addresses, phone numbers, all for sale on criminal forums.
This is what centralized digital identity looks like in practice and the EU wants to
scale that to 27 countries.
Now, when people really get this control and dependency structure,
they tend to go straight to tools.
How can I fix this?
Bitcoin, Noster, second passports, decentralize everything.
And I get it.
But there's a step that gets skipped.
And skipping it is very expensive.
And that step is knowing who you are on the spiritual level.
Before you pick up any tool, what are your values?
What's your line in the sand?
when you wake up in the morning, what's the mission that you're committed to?
Do you drag yourself out of bed or do you go, hell yeah, let's fucking go?
If you're, yeah, right. I know we have some real Bitcoiners in the audience. Hell yeah,
let's fucking go. If your mission is not aligned with your actions, you're probably dragging
yourself. I can tell you, I spent years building an audience before I had real clarity on what I
stood for. The pressure revealed it for me during COVID, October 7th, and the censorship and attacks
that followed. You see, the tools didn't save me. My clarity did. I knew and I still know that I
will never sell out on my values of freedom and sovereignty and that my mission is speaking out.
The spiritual foundation comes first, always. And that foundation is built by defining your values,
your mission, your voice, and your vision. What you refuse to compromise on, no matter the cost,
own that explicitly. In Bitcoin, we always say, be ungovernable, right? But guess what happens
when people cannot control you? They try to control how other people see you. So if your
identity is clear, it's harder to destabilize you. A strong mission-driven brand identity is
more than a marketing asset. It's a sovereignty tool. It allows you to say no in line with your
values. So who will thrive in what's coming? The ones who build a mission-driven identity,
then layer the tools on top. And it's hard to stand alone, so sovereign individuals build
sovereign communities, communities that scale and support. And that framework runs bottom-up,
start with yourself, build outward. The sovereign individual is the foundational unit,
everything else follows. And once the foundation is solid, the tools start to
make sense. The same principle that governs Bitcoin, no single point of
control, applies to identity, voice and infrastructure. Sovereignty is a
framework for reducing exposure to control at every layer. The same way you
hold keys to your Bitcoin, you can hold keys to your identity, your
communication, your infrastructure. This is where you take agency and control back.
You have a business? Set up a reserve. Diversify your rails and your platforms and use self-hosted
infrastructure. Own your data instead of renting it. You're a pleb like me? Use Nostr for sovereign
communication and permissionless publishing. Devs, we need you. Build more tools on Nostr. We really
need them. And beyond Bitcoin and Nostr, adopt privacy tools on software and hardware levels.
mine non-KYC sats directly to your wallet, mine, do mining, use self-hosted private AI.
The more deliberately you build this stack, the fewer permissions you need from anyone else.
Remember the three layers, physical, digital, spiritual. If one of them is weak, this is where
pressure arrives. These are all vulnerabilities that can lead to manipulation and capture if you
don't pay attention. In practice, across countries, across systems, Bitcoin means paying, moving and
exchanging without reliance on a single institution. I've done this across multiple continents. That's
how I roll as a digital nomad. When the banking infrastructure is unreliable, when credit card
companies limit me, when the political environment is hostile or a platform simply decides I am no
longer welcome, I keep moving. Holding money that no government or no counterparty can confiscate
or inflate away is real sovereignty, and I want that sovereignty everywhere. What you're building
is a layered citadel. Every layer you control strengthens the whole structure, and building a
citadel is, at its core, straightforward risk management. Since it's harder to build a citadel
alone. The people in this room, they're your community. This is where it starts.
Everything we've covered today maps into this one framework. Look at what you're
protecting on the horizontal axis. Money, identity, voice, and values. Those are the
three domains where control gets taken away from you or you reclaim it. Now look
Look at how on the vertical axis.
On the spiritual level, it starts with unclear values or a hollow mission.
That's where distortion can enter.
On the digital layer, it's the tools, Bitcoin, Noster, your sovereign stack.
On the physical level, it's jurisdiction, passports, where you can actually function.
Every cell in this grid is a question.
Who controls this for me or for you right now?
The more of these you own, the more resilient you become to pressure and censorship.
Now before I close, I cannot give this talk without paying homage to the Sovereign Individual
book.
Here are four key predictions written in 1997 before the internet was mainstream and before
Bitcoin actually existed.
The authors predicted that one, state power would degrade as individuals found ways to
to protect and move wealth digitally.
Two, the most mobile, skilled people would accumulate disproportionate power.
They'll be stateless, answering to no nation.
Three, taxation only persists because state monopolizes violence,
and once assets move digitally, the monopoly weakens.
And four, encryption and digital money
would make the sovereign individual an inevitable outcome.
Everything we've talked about today, the identity wars, the censorship, CBDCs, the EU wallet,
that's the system fighting back against exactly what they predicted.
Those are the agents fighting against the matrix.
Okay, the sovereign individual knows their signature, controls their keys,
reduces dependencies, and keeps speaking.
And this sovereignty consciousness starts here, in this room,
with the people who figured out the money layer first.
To summarize, if you don't know who you are, someone will define you.
If you don't control your identity, someone else controls your access.
Your reputation is theirs to damage.
If you don't use your voice, someone will silence it.
If you don't custody your keys, someone else will.
Bitcoin is proof resistance is possible.
Now we build the rest.
Thank you very much.
