Starting point is 00:00:00 The ZM Podcast Network. Cause after the after party, we're in love. It's an after party now, by the way. Our podcast's now an after party. I hear it. Maddy's here filling in for Bree today. And doing a great job, by the way. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:00:18 Thanks, Maddy. Good job. You're a broadcasting professional. Thank you so much. Do you find it weird, because you and I studied broadcasting together at the same age at the same school. Yes. Do you find it weird that people entering the industry now will look at you as like an expert?
Starting point is 00:00:32 Do you know what? We had a guy that used to be a junior reporter on our show on breakfast and he left and I wasn't there for his last day. So I sent him an email to say, you've done a great job. All the best for the next step, blah, blah, blah. Thanks for being part of the team. And he wrote back and said, thanks, Maddie.
Starting point is 00:00:54 It's meant a lot to work on breakfast. I used to look up to people like you when I was a kid. Ouch. Big, big ouch. Which was a lovely sentiment, but excuse me. I'm in my early to mid 30s. Show some goddamn respect. Such a fine line there.
Starting point is 00:01:15 You're like, respect your elders, but I'm not that much older than you. Okay. Show me the respect I've earned, but at the same time, treat me as a peer. But it is true. I started at TVNZ when I was 20. Really? I'm 36 now. What did you do?
Starting point is 00:01:28 What did you do when you first started? I was a junior. I did what he did. I was a junior reporter on Breakfast. Little Matty. He was that guy who, you know how the breakfast show would cross to reporters who are out and about? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:38 That was me. That was you? That was me. Nice. And now all my uni friends are doing that. Yeah, exactly. Wow. And now that I think about it they
Starting point is 00:01:46 absolutely would have been kids when i was starting out on breakfast yeah because here's a here's a fun fact for you um anyone who's looking at getting into the industry maddie and i who have both been in this industry for ouch 16 years have no idea what we are doing. No clue. No clue. No clue. A little bit. Well, we've got a little bit of learned experience, but largely we're making it up as we go. Absolutely. Largely we're making it up as we go. Don't come to me for advice.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Oh, really? I've got nothing. Don't do a career in that? I've got nothing. No? Have you been asked to go and speak at the broadcasting school yet? No. Have you?
Starting point is 00:02:22 No. Oh, my God. I got asked once. What? Fuck off, you did. You got asked. Not for B No, have you? No. Oh my God, I got asked once. What? Fuck off, you did. You got asked. Not for B school, but for AUT, and then COVID cancelled it.
Starting point is 00:02:30 You didn't even go to AUT. I did. Oh. Ouch. I thought you went to broadcasting school. I'm sorry. Ew, don't tarnish me with that brush. That's the better one.
Starting point is 00:02:40 Guess what I'm doing? I'm going to my high school's career day. Oh, yeah. This year, this month. I did that. I'm going to my high school's career day. Oh, yeah. This year, this month. I did that. I'm so excited. I only got asked to do that once. And I was like, oh, maybe it didn't go super well.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Maybe what I said. What are you going to tell them? What's going to be your words of wisdom? So you're 22. You're going to be speaking to 16 and 17-year-olds. What wisdom are you going to impart on them? Sup, guys? Media.
Starting point is 00:03:05 Oh, yeah, I don't know. Oh, God. Think about it. That's a solid start. They've asked me to give a brief rundown of what I did after high school. Yeah. So that's okay. I went to B school.
Starting point is 00:03:16 Well, it's only been four years, so I reckon it will be brief. B school. And it's all COVID. Oh, do you know what my biggest thing is? Ask, otherwise you won't know. That's the biggest advice I have. Don't be afraid to ask dumb questions. and also just like long shots like i i literally had asked ross so many stupid things can i go on weekends can i fill in when brie's away when i
Starting point is 00:03:34 was like an intern just like i know that's ridiculous but i got really cool opportunities because of it it's not ridiculous well asking to fill you miss a hundred what does michael jordan say you miss a hundred percent of the shots you don't take amen so that's good that's the one you can say to them and they'll go um who's michael jordan can we go back to the fact that neither of us have been asked to go back to broadcasting school yeah what do we what do should we call our tutor which one which one how can we call brendan riley Reilly Get Brendan Reilly on the phone I'm going to call Vicky Wilkinson-Baker And ask her why the hell
Starting point is 00:04:12 This is so funny I love that we're actually doing this I'm nervous He might give an answer we don't want to hear, Clint I'm willing to hear We'll be honest I need to hear it You need the hard truth
Starting point is 00:04:23 If not us Who? You're right I mean, Jack Tame, maybe I'll give them Jack Tame I'll give them Jack Tame Yeah He's so confused
Starting point is 00:04:34 Hi, Brendan speaking Hi, Brendan It's Clint Roberts and Maddy McLean Broadcasting School alum speaking You're on a ZM podcast How are you doing? Very good, young man Young men,, Brendan. There's two of us here and we have a very important question to ask you. Go on then.
Starting point is 00:04:51 First of all, thank you for calling us young. We appreciate it. Thank you. 16 years deep in this industry. You're still learning. And yes, we are still learning every day. Absolutely. But also, you would have to say, Brendan, long and illustrious media careers the two of us have had at this point. More than most. A lot of people aspire to get to where you two have got to. So you've done well.
Starting point is 00:05:17 So you'd think nuggets to share the young minds of today, right? Yeah. Lived experience, right? Yeah. Lived experience, you might say. Mm-hmm. Hands-on training in the industry that has accumulated over time. And the industry that we're both still working in. Yes. Brendan, our question for you is,
Starting point is 00:05:42 how come neither Maddy nor I have ever been invited back to speak to students at the broadcasting school? You're on a list, to be fair. Must be a fucking long list, Brendan. And there are some superstars on that list, and there are people who are not superstars. There are people who are available, also not available. It also comes down to us not being very well organized a week before the students turn up. Don't say that, okay?
Starting point is 00:06:14 Don't say that. That's so white. So white. Are we on the non-superstars list? There's no such thing. That's a great question, Billy. Are we on the superstar list or are we on the highly available list? There's no such thing as... That's a great question, Matty. Are we on the superstar list or are we on the highly available list? Which one of the lists are we on?
Starting point is 00:06:34 We're desperate. Will you be able to do it list? Let me fire some names of our peers at you and you tell me if they've been invited to speak at the broadcasting school. Jack Tame. Yes. I know that burns with you, Matty, doesn't it? It does. to speak at the Broadcasting School. Jack Tame. Yes. Oh. I know that burns with you, Matty, doesn't it?
Starting point is 00:06:49 It does. Daniel Faital. Yes. Oh, my gosh. These are all people from our year, from our class at Broadcasting School. And all people that also work at the same company that I work for. Nadine Chalmers-Ross.
Starting point is 00:07:04 No. Okay. All right, we're I work for. Nadine Chalmers-Ross. No. Okay. We're still on par with Nadine in the project. Who else is there? Who else did we study with? Drew Nemia. No, not
Starting point is 00:07:19 Drew. Who knows what Drew's doing? He could be in jail. No one knows. He is not in jail. No one knows. Hey, hey. He is not in jail. I will say that right now. Drew is definitely not in jail. Okay.
Starting point is 00:07:33 Is there anybody else? Who else? See, this is it. Who else is there, Brendan? This is our point, Brendan. What is this list? All of your peers. You can only remember four of them.
Starting point is 00:07:43 Well, I'm trying to think above us and below us as far as classes go then. Class in many ways of the word. PJ Harding. Many times. Yes, she's done it. Many. She's done it once. Caitlin Merritt.
Starting point is 00:08:01 Yes, she's come and spoken. She's not even. What? She's a nurse. She's not even... What? She's a nurse. She's not even in the industry. Well, she was. She was a producer at one point before she started nursing.
Starting point is 00:08:13 And now she's a cautionary tale. We liked her as a producer. Nurse, not so much. But wonderful profession, but just not star quality. So do we need to do anything to get the call up or do we just sit pretty and wait? No, all you've got to do, super simple, send an email
Starting point is 00:08:32 on about the 31st of January saying, hey. No, Brendan, no. That seems desperate. Yeah, Brendan, we shouldn't need to be asking. We should be, if anything. We want the honour of being asked. And then saying thank you, but no thank you. We're busy, sorry. Will you be able to pay for your own flights down?
Starting point is 00:08:56 No. No. I think we've come to a bit of a sticking point. We've come to an injunction, yeah. A junction. Right, okay. Well, I feel like you've heard us, and we'll just leave it there, okay?
Starting point is 00:09:13 I'll pass it on to our committee. We don't have a committee. We'll pass it on to some people. We don't have many people. We've gone to the top. We literally rang you. We've gone to the top, Brendan. Well, you've gone to the top. We literally rang you. We've gone to the top, Brendan. Well, you've gone to the medium.
Starting point is 00:09:27 That's probably it. It would be wonderful if you guys would make some time next year to be able to talk to the incoming classes and tell them about your experiences and not scare them off. Brendan, call us. We won't call you. It's going in the diary. Going in the diary tomorrow. Okay. Thanks, Brendan. Great won't call you It's going in the diary Going in the diary tomorrow Thanks Brendan, great to talk to you, thank you so much
Starting point is 00:09:50 Do you have a speaking fee? Yes, and you can't afford us We appreciate you, thanks Brendan Always a pleasure, thanks Dean That's Brendan Riley from the New Zealand Broadcasting School. Do we get any answers out of that? I feel like it was just being polite to us. It sounds like he was very interested.
Starting point is 00:10:16 I'm not emailing. I'm definitely not emailing. I've already got my thanks but no thanks reply ready to go. You wouldn't do it. If you got asked, you wouldn't do it. Maybe on the 31st of January you'd just need to be like, hi, no, but thank you. That would so piss them off, eh? They'd be like, they literally rang us begging to be invited to speak at broadcasting school.
Starting point is 00:10:36 We've made room for them. And those pricks turned us down? That's why they were never on the list. Well, that was list Wow That was heated Alright well that'll do I guess Let's go we've got better things to do It's after the after party We're on it all
