For a few years, in the 1970s, the Mr Asia syndicate made millions.
Heroin creates its own market.
It acts like a form of play.
Until jealousy, betrayal and murder brought it all crashing down.
Then he just pulled out a gun, shot her in the back of the head,
and then said to Wayne, you're going to help me bury her.
This is Mr Asia, A Forgotten History.

Hello
Hello Gary Gary Gary
Gary Gary Gary
Gary Gary Gary 2
That's so people can't
if I'm on a flight
and people recognise me they can't airdrop me pictures of their dicks.
I would be airdropping a picture of my dick to Gary, Gary, Gary, though.
I'd be like, this guy's asking for it.
To be fair, I started this thing a few years ago.
And yeah, I was on airplanes and we just started, you know, when you're bored for three hours, just started randomly airdropping funny pictures.
Yeah.
And then, but my phone was called like Elliot Gleave's phone.
So I changed it to Gary, Gary, Gary.
You were there in plain sight.
I was on a flight once.
Snakes on a plane.
And someone kept airdropping the entire plane a picture of Blue Waffle.
Oh, yeah.
And just you could see as it like just hit different people on the plane
like just the disgust and shock it was so bad yeah i mean my favorite one was we had an uber driver
who was a laughing yoga coach you know where you just sort of have fits of laughter oh yeah it's
meant to release and and then we found his Instagram and it was just him holding a pile of fruit and veg
so we screenshotted it
and we were really hungover and then we
got into the plane and we
tried to airdrop it for about three hours on and off
and I reckon maybe a hundred people
accepted the picture of our
driver holding fruit and veg
but they didn't know he was your driver, just a random guy holding produce
well yeah, imagine he's just on a plane and you're bored
I love it especially because you're expecting a dick pic and then it's a guy
holding fruit imagine how many times that uber driver people would get in and go god you look
familiar i got airdropped your face yeah what the hell is this you this is not even this is not even
the interview should we start the interview?
This is good stuff.
Oh, mate, so I thought we'd start it.
Nah, it's fucking good shit.
I think this is the interview.
I think that's all example has time for.
Yeah, yeah, sorry.
Well, yeah, just start with this and then introduce me at the end.
Yeah, I reckon.
Yeah, yeah, we'll make it a mystery interview.
Huge news that Manuka Farm,
Symphony and the Domain 2025 has been expanded.
The new and improved lineup now includes Basement Jacks.
Darude is on the lineup.
And Elliot John Gleave, a.k.a. Example.
Let's go, baby.
And he's on the line with us now.
Kia ora, Example.
Hello, mate.
Hey, Dan.
I feel like we just did the best part of the interview before we started.
Yeah, we've been talking shit for about five minutes.
That was my favorite interview I've done for a long time.
Your favorite interview that hasn't gone on air. That was on our fair. Yeah, what are we talking shit for about five minutes. That was my favourite interview I've done for a long time. Your favourite interview that hasn't gone on air,
that was on our fair.
Yeah, what are we doing here, guys?
Yeah, what do you want to talk about,
apart from what we were talking about before?
I wanted to talk about the fact that I have been listening
to your music for about 14 years,
and I didn't realise that your name is Elliot Gleave,
e.g. Example.
Oh, my God! The penny has just hit EG, example. Oh, my God.
The penny has just hit our producer, too, who has her hands on her head.
Most people hear the name example and just go, oh, he's got some big heads.
I'm not going to question his shit name.
Yeah, yeah.
And then they find out the meaning of it and they're like, oh.
That makes so much sense.
You are, and I'm sure you
This is not news to you
But our producer
Not that we needed it
Always puts together a cheat sheet of information
For us before the interview
And she couldn't get any information on you
Because you can't just write example into Google
Yeah
You have to put example rapper
But sometimes you get examples of a rapper no
that's what they got they got example of like um rights free um rap music that you can use in your
videos oh nice yeah maybe that's i'm in the wrong business it's good you're quite elusive on google
which i think maybe is you're the only person that is uh you are coming back to new zealand
this summer which is excellent you've been been to New Zealand a few times.
I think you've played R&V before, haven't you?
I have been.
So my history, my brief history of NZ is I came to Rhythm and Vines.
Yes.
I played headline shows in Auckland, Christchurch, Welly.
I've been to Dunedin.
Oh, you've done the whole thing.
God, you've been all over and you remember the place names,
which is very impressive.
I've got a spreadsheet of all the gigs I've ever done.
Okay.
In your mind?
Yeah, spreadsheet in my mind.
Yeah.
It's been going since 2004.
And it's everything from the city, the the venue the capacity the ticket price the fee
so i can look back and see when i was no way 50 quid um yeah to when i was getting paid silly
money and back to where you know i i feel like i'm back mostly on an upward curve again now
but yeah i've been to i've played NZ 17 times. 17 times?
That's incredible.
Okay, so you are more than familiar.
There's always something that reminds you of the place.
So what is it when you go, in your mind, you go New Zealand,
and specifically Auckland, what comes to mind for you, example?
Well, see, I've got some really good mates in Auckland,
so I think of them, but I just think there's this sort of carefree,
fun-loving, no-shit no attitudes who are your friends in auckland because we'll definitely know them uh yeah because there's about 12 of you yeah um
it reminds me a lot of when i go to ireland and scotland it's sort of like this the mentality of
people in nz reminds me of when i go to scotland and and Ireland is it's sort of like it's just full of energy
and just down
to earth and takes no shit.
I like it. We've got good banter here, right?
Example? You've got amazing banter.
I mean, I live in Brisbane and
I'm here for my kids because they go to school here and I'm
here for the weather, but
NZ is just, you know,
it's magical. I've done the bungees in
Queenstown. I've done the skiing.
I've been to Hobbiton.
You know what I mean?
I've been to Rotorua.
God, you have really done everything.
That's it.
That's all we've got.
That's all we've got to offer.
Yeah, it's pretty much actually, I've just listed the whole thing.
Yeah, yeah.
I thought we were talking about the gig at the Domain.
It's actually a tourism guide.
Yeah, they're going to love it.
NZ tourism are going to love it.
I'm always interested to know, like, the food that sticks out,
the times you have been here.
I always ask people, what is the food item that sticks out to you
that you remember?
Yeah, you guys, for some reason, I don't know why,
have incredible Asian fusion restaurants.
Oh, yeah.
Mekong Baby, shout out, Ponsonby Road, one of my favourites.
Yeah, you guys have, like, so many amazing places,
and they're all Asian.
You're spot on.
I've been to, like, 89 countries, and, like,
usually all I ever see is the airport, the gig, and the hotel.
Yeah.
But I get to often eat at the nicest places.
But having been back and forth to NZ,
obviously I'm just across
the pond now in brisbane you guys just do asian fusion better than anyone else i have to agree
with you 89 countries what's the worst country you've performed in what's the worst country
yeah um that's a hard question yeah i'm glad this isn't being filmed this would be like a viral real
right um i don't know if the worst country in terms of what,
the worst gig or like the state of the country economically.
The country in which the dictatorship that you experience.
Politically.
Yeah, yeah.
No, what country did you have your worst experience in?
To be honest, I've played there about 25 times,
but Dubai for me is just a bit soulless.
It's like,
there's no energy.
There's no culture.
There's no,
you know,
it's just,
it's transient.
Everyone's just there to make their fortune and piss off.
And it's hot as dog balls there.
Fake beaches and shopping malls and tax avoiders.
And it's just like, don't get me wrong,
if someone offers me the right amount,
I'll happily go back to Dubai and play.
So will we.
We're willing to relocate this radio show to Dubai.
I've actually been there sometimes on stage.
I've been there so many times and just said,
can you not wake up?
Yeah, exactly.
They can't though because they've got you tonight.
They had David Guetta last night
and they've got the Black Eyed Peas
including Fergie
tomorrow night
so
they've got everyone
you know
it doesn't make sense
I find that going to the UAE
I just like
the reason that people go
to that sort of part
of the world
I think a lot of the time
is for money
yeah
and therefore
you don't get the best vibes
but you know
like the places I find like apart from
like ireland and scotland and nz uh as i've already said uh when i've been to like lithuania latvia
czech republic slovenia slovakia these places are just so like a lot of them have been through
recent um you know troubles and turmoil um so i guess that always you know brings out the best of
people in terms of just living life to the fullest yeah sure yeah even like when you know getting to
play those places they just almost like they can't believe you're there yeah and i'm there just
something i'm not that much of a big deal but they hear your songs on radio or whatever and then you
turn up and then they're appreciative that you. They're appreciative that you came. They're appreciative. Yeah. I mean, I played four gigs in Ukraine.
Right.
Okay.
Before the war.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Not recently.
No.
But honestly, it's just unbelievable response.
Like the energy.
That's amazing.
You know, where people are just so appreciative.
And that's what you want.
It's like Miami or Dubai is just a bit fake.
And then they're a bit spoiled by it all, you know?
We are appreciative here.
Nobody comes to New Zealand anymore.
We got skipped by Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish.
Everyone, pretty much.
I feel like NZ is just everyone who makes drum and bass now.
Yes.
It's a drum and bass mecca.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And the Wilkinsons that come here.
Yeah, Wilkinson's like Justin Bieber over there.
Yes, he is.
And Netsky is like Justin Timberlake.
And they come here and they go,
holy shit, I am so famous in this country.
Yeah, Becky Hill is our Beyonce.
Pretty much, yeah.
Yeah.
Well, but I'm coming back.
Yes.
And I love it every time.
This gig that you're performing,
we've gone a long way from the gig.
Let's get back to the gig.
It is phenomenal.
It's the third year that this gig is happening in the Domain.
You won't have played in the Domain before, I'm sure,
unless you did Christmas Carols in the Park.
That's what it used to get used for.
Now it has this huge dance music festival in it every year.
You're going to freaking love this show.
At the same time, the backdrop to this is your country and our
country are currently locked in a very
heated battle in the America's Cup. It's
Great Britain versus New Zealand.
The All Blacks are going to play
England at Twickenham. I know you're in Brisbane, but they're
going to your motherland to play England later
on this year. So there's a rivalry going
on. Would you, if we can organise
it when you're here, be willing to turn
your back on your country
and don if not perform in an all-blacks jersey oh mate i'll put an all-blacks jersey on anytime yes
i'm just a massive fan of like like amazing athletes and amazing teams and amazing sport like
i will happily wear other i'm a full-on fan so i'm you're never going to see me in a chelsea shirt
yeah okay that's fair enough that's fair enough you you instantly won their colors oh, I'll happily wear other colours. I'm a full implant, so you're never going to see me in a Chelsea shirt. Yeah, okay.
That's fair enough.
That's fair enough.
But I've been to plenty of countries and worn their colours.
Yeah, you'll instantly win the crowd over. They'll just go berserk for it.
Well, why don't you guys come back?
We'll do a follow-up interview, and then you can provide me with the jersey.
Deal.
I love it.
Yeah, deal.
That's a good deal.
Fantastic.
That's going to be excellent.
It's going to be very good.
I thought there'd be slightly more resistance to that but it was great
he was like yeah I'm on board
I want to ask
because obviously Manuka Farm Symphony
in the domain it's truly
one of the greatest events we have here in this
country a full
symphony orchestra have you ever
played with that behind you before
well so I've already done
Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth
with the symphony crew.
So I come in with my DJ, Tenzin.
So I'm on the mic, you know, shouting, rapping,
singing all my songs.
Shouting.
I think most people call it a set.
Yeah, yeah.
I describe it differently.
You know, getting the crowd the crowd riled up and then the
orchestra come on and just bang out. I've watched the show a few times now, just obviously
covers and interpretations of all your favourite dance classics and the conductor, conductress,
she's incredible SG and then obviously then, you know, obviously everywhere
I've been so far, there's been a different orchestra in each city, but, you know, essentially
the same show. And then there's obviously these vocalists that come on. I've been coming
on at the end of every set and performing kickstarts. And I look behind me and I'm like,
I've played with a band before and I've played with like a string quartet and, you know,
doing live lounges and stuff. And there's like 47 people behind me.
It's pretty.
They were all way more talented than me.
Oh, don't know about that.
You're a bloody triple threat.
What do you think is your favorite instrument out of all of them?
I love the timpani.
We're just going to Google that so we know what that is.
The timpani is, you know,
when you see those guys with the sort of big sort of bass drums around them and there's that brrrr.
Yes.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I know the thing.
Yeah.
It's a big single drum or it's a set of drums.
Yeah, I just love the timpani.
Yeah.
I like that.
I also love the oboe because I just think it's amazing.
You took oboe out of my mouth.
Whoever came up with the name oboe deserves it. Anyone who's stuck with playing the oboe out of my mouth. Whoever came up with the name oboe deserves it.
Anyone who's stuck with playing the oboe outside of high school,
I just respect them.
Carrying the oboe to school on the bus.
Yeah, I'm like, how did you get through high school
and you're still here and you're playing the oboe?
Good on you.
Yeah, if you're like, oh, yeah, I was the clarinet state champion.
That sounds amazing.
If you're like, oh, it's the jazz flute
state champion.
Everyone's like,
oh, I bet they don't
wear deodorant.
And then if you're like,
oh, I'm the oboe
state champion.
They're like,
well, what was your
uppercut?
Two other people.
So you pick up the oboe.
I don't think the oboe
gets enough love.
You lost your virginity
at 40 watt.
Hey, we're so excited
for this.
This show is phenomenal.
It's great to have you on the lineup.
Thanks for chatting with us this afternoon.
No worries, man, and I'll see you then.
Yeah, and we'll have your All Blacks jersey ready.
Yeah, have it ready, man.
Thanks for this, guys.
No worries.
Thank you.
That's example.
He's on the lineup for Manuka Farm,
synthony in the domain, 2025.
See you soon, guys. See you change the way you kiss me.
