Hey Sharon!
Shazzy!
How are you guys feeling?
We're feeling alright. How are you going?
I'm good, yeah, I'm good.
It's been kind of the opposite.
The last time I did all these interviews
I was doing it at like 1 o'clock in the morning
and now I'm doing it at sort of
6, 7 o'clock in the morning, so it's good.
Yeah, well we've been kept very up to date.
We've just been told you've had a toilet break.
Yes, number one or two? It was a date. We've just been told you've had a toilet break. Oh, yes. Number one or two?
It was a pee.
I've had like three coffees.
This is my coffee cup, by the way.
It's a guy saying at least the dog likes me
and the dog's saying cunt.
Relatable.
I love it.
It's the best dog I've ever met.
Hey, look, we don't have long with you
and we're very excited to see you.
We would love to interview you,
but there's actually somebody that we know that we think would do a better job than us okay look i'll
give you some background real quick ed my mom is my all-time favorite person in this whole world
and her all-time favorite person is you okay it's awkward but yeah it's awkward it goes you
ricky martin her, and then her husband.
You're at the top.
Amazing.
Since I can remember, I've been doing some, like,
social media videos or I get her on the radio,
and she always asks to be paid in either Ed Sheeran merch
or Ed Sheeran CDs.
Incredible.
No matter how many times I try to explain to her,
CDs aren't really, you know, the biggest thing anymore.
I'll buy it for you on your phone.
And she's like, great, I'll take that as payment.
So she's doing the interview?
She doesn't know she's doing the interview.
What we want to do is Bree's going to send her this Zoom link right now.
Yeah.
And we're just going to drop her into the interview.
She knows that we're just going to drop her into the interview she knows that we're here
she thinks she's coming on to play the secret sound competition on the radio perfect and this
is going to be fun yeah but this is this is a make good ed because i actually pranked her with
a fake ed sheeran a couple of years ago um i'll just show you just a you know just so you can get a vibe of what she's like.
Hello, this is Ed Sheeran.
Oh, my God.
Oh, Brianna, my God.
He's one of the most talented young men.
He's songwriting and his lyrics are just fantastic.
I can't believe you just spoke to Ed Sheeran.
I honestly can't believe it.
Yeah, well, don't because it was my mate Digby.
Brianna. Right. So I figure this't believe it. Yeah, well, don't because it was my mate Digby. Rihanna.
Right.
So I figure this is my chance.
What's her name?
Di.
Di, right.
Let's get Di on.
Oh, my God.
Okay, here we go.
I'm going to text her right now.
She knows nothing.
So here we go.
She is 63, so it might take her a minute to jump on the chat.
I'm in.
She's coming.
Just be prepared for some classic boomer camera in the Zoom
facing around the wrong way action.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, always.
You're honestly, like, saving me a million Christmas presents
and birthday presents doing this.
Appreciate this, Ed.
I'm so in.
This is going to be fun.
Have we checked that Bree's mum has Wi-fi oh my god hey di are we on the right meeting
turn your camera on mom oh my god turn your camera on mama die
how do we do that? Chris. Chris.
How do you do it?
It's bottom left-hand corner.
Bottom left-hand corner, there's a little thing that says video
and there's like a red line through it.
If you click that little red line, the video should go.
There we go.
Oh, my God.
Yay.
So, Di, this is the the format you are doing the interview today
so what would you like to know oh my god ed how on earth can you come up with the most amazing
songs um i think it's i think it's uh uh i've i've i've written songs since I was like 13, 14. And they started off being really bad. And the more and more I wrote, the better they became. And I feel like the more honest you are, the better the song is. So sometimes I feel scared to say something in a song because it might be too raw, or too embarrassing and blah, blah, blah. But I find when I listen to artists, I go, ah, they said that
and I feel like I can't say that.
And they're saying exactly what I'm feeling.
So I find myself being more honest with songs.
And I think with songwriting,
the harder you work at it,
the luckier you become, basically.
Mamadou, what a great question that was.
Yeah, and that is off the top of my head.
Oh my God.
Can you ask Ed something about the brand new album, please? I know we didn't prep you for this. Can you ask Ed something about the brand new album, please?
I know we didn't prep you for this.
Can you ask him something?
It's called Minus.
It's called Equals, and it comes out this week.
So could you ask him something about that?
So what's inspired you the most on Equal?
So when I was putting the album together, I mean,
I started this album when I was 26 years old and my life was that of a 26 year old.
I was, you know, there wasn't that much responsibility. I was touring, drinking, partying.
So the album sort of started like that, dating Cherry and then Cherry got engaged.
Then we got married and then we had a kid. I turned 30. I lost a very close friend of mine.
And in that sort of period of time that was
the most inspiring song wise so this album sort of became an album about essentially like a quarter
life crisis and trying to figure out who the hell i was now i was married with a kid and um 30 so uh
much like plus is uh a snapshot and a diary entry of an 18-year-old boy, I'd say this is an album about where I am at the moment,
being a 30-year-old dad.
So would it be fair to say that your up and down of life experiences
has led to this album?
Yeah, and I think each of my last three albums have been that as well.
I mean, Divide was the up and down of life experiences, but it was just a bit less, uh,
grown up.
I mean, I was still, I felt, I felt I was growing up.
I feel like I've really gone through some real, like real, real life stuff now.
Like, like even just, even just the birth, the birth of my child.
I mean, you just, you just assume, I just assumed it's like a 26 year old.
I was like, right.
Birth just happens. And you know, it's like a 26 year old i was like right birth just happens and you know it's like six hours of of craziness and then the baby's there
but it's so much like no one really talks about how like full on it is for the the the mother and
uh yeah it's just i did like that that was just like a day in my life that was such a like real
life moment there was no a like real life moment
there was no control like usually i'm in such control of everything that i i do i have people
employed to do this i have a security guard that takes from here to here and everything's like
set out and suddenly you're in this moment same for like proposing you when i proposed that could
go either way she might say no she might say yes she might say maybe uh and there's no certain
thing whereas like today is a certain thing i know that i'm doing 14 hours of interviews and like that's that's that's my day
but yeah it's um mom hey mom tell ed about when you gave birth to me that i broke your coccyx
and my sister took a poo in her stomach it's no he doesn't need to hear no he knows he was
no no no but all of this stuff all of this stuff is like super super common and you just don't
you don't realize you know you don't you just don't know you just don't know until you're
to in the moment and being like you know seeing the person you love the most in that much pain
and you you are powerless you literally stand you're you i kind of
felt like i was just sort of in the corner of the room and the doctor was like yeah you need to just
stay over there and then but then when it's time for the big decisions to be made they go right
what should we do and i'm like well but you but you're the doctor
ed my daughter was just born this year as well and i had the opposite experience the midwife said
can you go down there and can you catch the baby oh wow yeah well we ours was a bit more um
uh yeah full on it was like there was like an emergency right okay but yeah um so yeah i didn't get to experience that but how was that
like the most surreal experience of my life like like you said it's something you can't
understand until you've done it but but this thing it felt like a real life moment didn't
it like sometimes i'll like like for me being on stage at wembley stadium you're in front of 87
000 people or whatever i don't really see that as a real-life
moment.
That's such a surreal
like, yeah, I'm just
kind of here and
people in the
heavens.
But in terms of
things that you,
like, that could go
either way.
That could be the
best day of your
life or the worst
day of your life.
And it could happen
in a split second
and you have no
control over it.
It's just in, like,
whatever happens,
happens.
And that's what I
mean by the real-life
moments, basically. And that's what I mean by the real-life moments basically.
We're getting...
Hey, Mum, I think you've got one more question, Mum,
so make it your best one.
How do you get to be so relaxed in front of 80,000 people
and perform like you do?
It just seems to come from the heart.
It just seems so real to me when I'm watching it.
Thank you.
I have played, I mean, literally thousands of shows,
and it's my passion.
I love it.
When I first moved to London, it was about how many shows
I could fit in a night.
I would play anywhere. I'd go and play to two people was about how many shows I could fit in a night you know I would
play anywhere I'd go and play to two people to 20 people to 40 people to jazz nights comedy nights
soul nights R&B nights rap nights and so by the time it came to touring I was I it was I was sort
of this sort of well well-oiled machine that the first shows I was like well of course like I've
I've been doing this I've just but what I hadn't been doing is playing to people that actually wanted to hear my
music. So suddenly you're filled with a crowd. And I used to go on stage and have to convince
people to listen to me. And then suddenly I'm going on stage and people know my songs and
it's, you can't be nervous when you're going out to, if I went out to 80,000 people that had never
heard my music. Yes. I'd be nervous. I'm going out to 80,000 people that are fans. Like they want me to sing these
songs. So I walk out on stage and I go, I, and you can't, once you've had a certain amount of
hits, you can't lose because even if I play one song and it doesn't really go well, I'm like,
yeah, well I'll, I'll play perfect now, or I'll play thinking out loud. Now I'll play shape of
it. Like there's, there's songs that they're just the slam dunks that that you can't lose in a scenario where you're playing a stadium
full of people that want to hear those songs so I'm not as nervous of like I was way more nervous
I used to play I used to play like uh like rooms that were comedy nights and I'd be the only white
guy in the room and I'd be playing music and it would be a comedy night. And I would, I would, I would watch comedians bomb on stage before me like bomb.
And then I'd have to go on stage. And I remember I played this gig in Los Angeles and I was being
roasted by the host as I was setting up being like, who's this little ginger dude with his
little guitar. And like all the crowd, all the crowd are kind of roasting me too. And then I
have to stand up and then entertain this crowd.
But I think,
so I'm nervous there,
but then that also brings the best out of you.
Cause in my head,
I'm like,
I'm going to show you what I can do.
And like now I think because I've had,
I've sort of earned my stripes,
if that makes sense.
Like I can,
I think how many hits you've had it.
I think,
yeah,
no,
I think you're there.
I think you,
you,
I think you just got there, you know.
Thank you.
Thank you.
All right, we're getting into the big wrap-up.
Stay kind and lovely.
To be a lovely person.
Thanks, Di.
Di, this is beautiful.
Hey, Mama, quick, ask Ed Sheeran what you always ask me.
Ask him for some Ed Sheeran merch or some CDs, quick.
Oh, no, yes, no. Yes, please.
Yes, please.
I wear all the T-shirts.
Di, I'll get you one of these.
I'll get you one of these.
I would love one.
Okay.

an Equals hoodie, an Equals T-shirt.
And then do you have a vinyl player?
Yes.
Yes, of course.
My dad. I'll send have a vinyl player? Yes. Yes, of course. That's my dad.
I'll send you a vinyl.
Yeah, I'll make sure we write that down.
Oh, my God.
I think that means you passed the interview test.
Honestly, Ed, you have no idea how much that means to her.
That's so lovely of you.
That's so kind.
Thank you so much.
Thank you for your time.
