Starting point is 00:00:00 Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the studio the winner of RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under, it's Keita B! She's a winner, baby! You did it, you won! Oh, what the heck? Oh my god, this is so surreal for me, I can't imagine what it's like for you! Oh my god, it's totally not real. This is you, by the way, this is you! You're on Spotify, baby.
Starting point is 00:00:27 What's that like, hearing yourself? You're a recording artist now. Oh, my God. Well, I mean, there's a lot of filters over that vocal. Come on now. A little bit of reverb. We do a bit of karaoke on this show. We can tell when someone can see us.
Starting point is 00:00:40 What is a good queen without a bit of a filter, though? Amen. Right? It's all part of the fun. I thought I had a filter on my mouth to be honest. Me too. Get the dental dams. This is a win for New Zealand, by the way.
Starting point is 00:00:54 It was Trans-Tasman. It was RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under. And you've done it for New Zealand. Oh, wow. How good is that? We should actually give you one of these, too. Welcome in, Her Royal Highness, the winner of RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under,
Starting point is 00:01:09 Ketamine. How does that feel? Because obviously, you know, I'm an Australian, but I was backing you the whole way. And to be honest, I felt like the Kiwi Queens really stood up in the competition. Yeah, I totally feel the same way I'm so proud of my sisters you know everyone on that show just like totally turned it out and we showed them we
Starting point is 00:01:32 showed the world you know what Down Under um is all about which is like crazy a little bit brash um but totally unique and lovable I think um but yeah my Kiwi sisters like turned it out and i'm so proud of i've always been so proud to be um part of this country and like now even more so you know the winning prize for ruPaul's drag race is um or the cash component is 30 grand right 30 grand cash yeah have you got it yet no no no it can't be trusted with it apparently no really no no no it's coming it's coming okay yeah you're not like refreshing your bank account every five minutes to check it no well yeah you know i'm i'm not in a rush to spend it you know it's called a credit card she's spending it already actually yeah i mean a lot of those coins were pre-spent on getting onto the show like those costumes aren't
Starting point is 00:02:20 cheap this is what i was gonna say it can't be an expensive profession being like a top level queen a queen that can win ruPaul's drag race yeah well you must have costs ridiculous costs yeah but it gets to a point though where like eventually um it does start like balancing out and you can start making some money off it but definitely in the early days i like over the years i've probably spent way more on drag than i've made from it. I can't even imagine because, like, you can see how polished all of your looks and you were as a queen on the show. Like the LED lights in some of your costumes, the wings for the finale costume.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Like it's just incredible the amount of thought and ideas that go into the costumes, but the cost of those would be insane. Yeah. Oh, thank you. Yeah, those wings actually are made here in be insane. Yeah. Oh, thank you. Yeah. They are. Those wings actually are made here in New Zealand as well. That's so cool. There's a really talented guy down Christchurch.
Starting point is 00:03:12 His company is called the Tectonic Workshop. There you go. Shout out if you need wings. He does all sorts of cool stuff. You're doing drag influencing what you're doing right now. Yeah, totally. That's the weirdest thing. It's like now I'm like one of those cool kid influencers.
Starting point is 00:03:27 Totally. They're like, oh, would you model my product and we'll send you a credit. Have you been offered any deals yet? Juice? You've been offered juice? Yeah. Like all sorts of crazy things. People just want to send me like makeup and some weird things.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Any sex toys yet? Bree's been offered sex toys. I just get offered maxi pads and sex toys. That's about it. I could benefit from both of those. Like, like, but I'd find like a creative use for them.
Starting point is 00:03:54 Let's just say like, I have been, um, in five pairs of tights since 4am this morning and I haven't been able to use the bathroom. So like, something absorbent down there would probably work. if poise panty liners or nice slim ones hit me up you know and add a little bit of extra hip padding you know i can't wait to
Starting point is 00:04:12 see the post you do for that that'll be great i can't wait keita look you and i i've been messaging messaging you on instagram throughout the whole competition just being like girl you got this i'm back a new in for the win yeah and i messaged you always message back to you always so lovely and I messaged you on Saturday and I was like massive massive good luck for today I know you're gonna win I can feel it and you were like oh fingers crossed let's do this thing and then I had this thought where I was like I wonder if she actually knows if she's won or not and then I realized you didn't even know that you'd won right yeah 100% so we don't they um I knew that I'd made it to the last episode um and I knew who was obviously in the last episode with me but uh when right before we wrapped filming basically the last thing we all did
Starting point is 00:04:57 uh was um they filmed four alternate endings so everyone had to pretend like they'd won every single one of us. So there's three versions of the show out there where you lose. Yeah. Wow. That's weird to think about, isn't it? Yeah, it really is. But the funny thing is, it was more, people often have asked me today a lot,
Starting point is 00:05:20 like, does that mean the reaction's not authentic? The less authentic reactions are probably like the ones where i didn't win and i'm just you know you have to do like the clap like congratulations and like the smile and then the dance at the end while they're holding the scepter is that because you couldn't imagine a world where you lost no definitely like i'm not that kind of person i'm always like probably like the opposite i'm probably like probably won't win keeps you know like truck on girl you're definitely more like that
Starting point is 00:05:49 you doubt yourself sometimes and I'm just kind of like how is this bitch doubting herself she's killing it the whole time but look who I was up against I mean like some incredible talent but you were just as incredible if not more so because you bloody won the thing.
Starting point is 00:06:09 But I loved the most seeing your self-discovery and your adventure in terms of how you grew so much as a person and learnt so much about yourself. Did you think that that's how it was going to go for you on the show? No, not at all. That's the funny thing. That's something I struggled with on the show, because usually when I'm in drag performing for an audience, I'm just like Keita,
Starting point is 00:06:26 the crazy clown lady. That's like having a few drinks, saying some out, like outrageous jokes and just sort of having a good time. You're so quick. Oh, thank you. A little bit quicker now that I've lost a few kilos.
Starting point is 00:06:38 See what I mean? But yeah, like I found on the show, especially probably like just in the situation that you're in I was even though I was painted in drag and I was in all the costuming I still felt like I was the person I am day to day life
Starting point is 00:06:56 while wearing the makeup which was a weird combination for me because usually there's a clear distinction between when I'm just like at home doing admin on the computer versus when I'm like being a clown on stage we didn't have an audience we didn't have that build-up of like um you know like having a few drinks and then like saying hi to everyone and then performing there was none of that so I didn't have that segue into like um getting into performance mode was that really hard to kind of be like wait a minute i need to get quite vulnerable here yeah it was um but like liberating too like i um like i i know that i'm
Starting point is 00:07:32 like quite a sensitive person and like um i have now learned as i've got older and um wiser i guess that like you know like giving into your emotions you know it's really healthy actually to explore your emotions and your natural feelings into like makes you super powerful yeah it really does um which a lot of people don't understand but like when you've realized that that there's so much power in that and truly just trying to understand yourself um and then you can start understanding other people so much you know and putting yourself into their shoes and oh my god no wonder you won by the way oh well you know you've been you've only been on a drag journey you've been on a spiritual journey
Starting point is 00:08:09 yeah it truly felt like yeah really did yeah yeah and that's yeah and that's why i think i just i connected with you so much because i just i i think i appreciated how vulnerable you were on the show you just were everything like you you just were on the ride and i feel like you took everything in your stride, and then when something didn't work out completely right, you got back on the horse, and you just rode it all the way into the sunset. Yeah, I've ridden a few horses.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Let's get superficial again for a second. I've got a hypothetical for you. If you could buy any pair of shoes in the world, no matter what they were, what brand, what cost they were, and they would fit, what would you buy? Do you have a dream pair of shoes? Do you know what I wouldn't buy? Is those purple fucking platforms.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Oh, I'm sorry. That's okay. I wouldn't buy those purple platforms that I had to lip sync against electroshock. Oh my God, could you not? You couldn't even move, right? I could not move. And that dress is made from solid foam,
Starting point is 00:09:04 so I couldn't bend at the hip. I couldn't walk move, right? I could not move. And that dress is made from solid foam. So I couldn't bend at the hip. I couldn't walk in the shoes. I couldn't see through those mesh contact lenses. And I couldn't hear through that helmet. I was literally impaired in every way you could imagine. But if anyone spilled a drink, you would have been right there. And you would have soaked the whole thing up with the foam dress, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:21 Although I probably would have electrocuted myself with those pigtails. Okay, not those. Have you seen the Balenciaga high heel Crocs myself with those pigtails. Okay, not those. Have you seen the Balenciaga high heel Crocs that are out at the moment? Yes, I have. Would you wear a pair of those? Totally. Do you know who would wear them, rock them so much better?
Starting point is 00:09:33 Brie. Well, Brie. No, no. I cannot pull off Crocs. She wants a pair. She wants a pair. She's too humble to admit, though, that she'd look great in a pair of high heel Crocs.
Starting point is 00:09:40 You would look great in them. You would look great in them. My drag mother actually is known for wearing Crocs like after hours. So once she's done the gig and she's slipping on her caftan to head home, she slips her Crocs on. I've been telling you for ages that Crocs are in the clubs. He forced me to wear Crocs for an entire week to the gym, to concerts, to everywhere that I went.
Starting point is 00:10:00 And I'll just say, you know, it wasn't the best week of my life. I've never worn a pair. I would love to. Are they comfortable? I mean, they say they're comfortable, right? Some are more comfortable than others. I don't know if the high heel ones. Right.
Starting point is 00:10:13 I feel like anything after the shoes and boots that you've worn on RuPaul's slash in your day-to-day drag life, it'd be comfortable. Yeah, amen to that. Also, while we're endorsing products, you'd have to know this. What is the best makeup remover? Oh, I use these Johnson & Johnson pink. They're like in a pink packet. I just use makeup wipes. I don't use a remover.
Starting point is 00:10:35 That's what I use. The pink makeup remover. Yeah, they're actually really good. They're the best ones, yeah. Oh, they're good. They're quite gentle on your face. Yeah, they are. You'd need about ten of them.
Starting point is 00:10:48 You know what? Depending how good the paycheck was that night, I will either use one very simply. Is that how you know how good the night was? Yeah, oh yeah, for sure. If on a bad night you're reusing wipes, on a good night it's fresh, fresh, fresh. Do you know how relatable that is?
Starting point is 00:11:02 My partner and I always have the fight, can you stop putting your used makeup wipes all around the bathroom? I'm like, I need to reuse it. They're expensive. They're so expensive. It's crazy. But they're worth it. There you go.
Starting point is 00:11:14 Next endorsement. Yeah, absolutely. Johnson & Johnson. Hit me up. I'll do a little hashtag post for you. Come on, Johnson. Come on, Drew. Keita Meen is here.
Starting point is 00:11:23 You've just won RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under. Just tell us what that means for a queen to win a show like that key to mean is here you've just won rupaul's drag race down under just tell us what that means for a queen to win a show like that what does it allow you to do and what does it mean for your drag career from now wow uh well first of all i mean it's a show that i've been following um basically like the show started coming out as i was starting drag so it's something i've been watching and following for the last 11 years. And it's something I never thought that I would be privileged enough to take part in. So it means now that like my name is being put in front of like a much wider audience. So hopefully I get a chance to impress them. And if they like what I do, then maybe I can perform for them.
Starting point is 00:12:02 You know, the longer I can keep performing in drag, the happier I will be. And, you know, so. And maybe even travel one day. Yeah. Should the world permit it. You're going on tour. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Yeah, absolutely. We're doing a tour around Australia and New Zealand, which is so exciting. Got to do it. And then, yeah, who knows? You've got to get a bus like Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Absolutely. Surely you recreate that bus.
Starting point is 00:12:26 Yeah, yeah. See, that has to be done. I think, I mean, I've grown up watching RuPaul's Drag Race and from someone like me who is in the community, watching has been such an outlet for, you know, so many people and I think when it came to Australia and New Zealand, it was such a special thing because it felt like you know our countries and our communities were getting showcased and you're
Starting point is 00:12:50 such an amazing representative for you know Australia and New Zealand and our community so congratulations from us oh thank you that's so sweet of you you know like it's a lot of pressure because like also like I am not the perfect, you know, like, role model. That's why you're perfect. You know, like, I'll have too much champagne and just, like, totally make a boob of myself at the club. Hashtag Saturday night. I think that's part of why you won. Oh, well.
Starting point is 00:13:19 Ladies and gentlemen, your RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under champion, Keita May!
