Starting point is 00:00:00 We'll be right back. The UK got a season, Emmys have been won, and after having tops and bottoms galore, Clint, we're finally getting a season down under. And to celebrate, welcome RuPaul's bestest friend in the whole world, Michelle Visage. Can you tell I watch the show, Michelle? Just a little bit. That was quite the intro. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:00:40 You're welcome. You deserve it and you need it. How excited are you to finally be bringing the show to Australia and New Zealand? I mean, it was only time. As you know, Roo is the biggest Aussie file. He's married to an Australian. So it's always been on the radar, you guys. It's just a matter of scheduling and timing. And we were able to do it finally. Are you super excited to actually be out and about in a country where you can live like a normal life here? I'm going to move here.
Starting point is 00:01:07 I already told my husband. I was like, this is where we belong. They have a leader with a brain. They do everything correctly. This is where we need to be. We will take you in a heartbeat. Yes, please. Aw, thank you.
Starting point is 00:01:19 Speaking of that leader with a brain, she's a real icon, Jacinda. You know, she used to be a DJ. Yeah, she was a DJ. You are lying. No, that's legit. They called us just Spindera Dern. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Do you guys know that I did 17 years of Breakfast Show presenters? Yeah. What? Do you want to come in
Starting point is 00:01:36 and co-host the show while you're here? Oh my god, stop. I will indeed if you'd like me to. Oh, yeah. Stop. I'll pee my pants. I'll wet myself. Let's work something out That would be fantastic I think Oh my god
Starting point is 00:01:47 Jacinda's got a feature In the Down Under series Somehow though Like she's gotta be I was gonna ask Michelle Can she be one of the Guest judges Is that possible
Starting point is 00:01:54 Are you all on a First name basis With your Prime Minister Yeah it's very relaxed Here in New Zealand I call her mate Michelle when we interview I'm like how you going mate
Starting point is 00:02:02 Okay I'm so excited Spill the tea for us on RuPaul. What is a secret that you can tell New Zealanders that no one knows about RuPaul? RuPaul is going to be here hosting. So that's super important. I think a lot of people think, well, is Ru actually coming? Is Ru going to do it? Yes, it's RuPaul's Drag Race.
Starting point is 00:02:21 So I am here. RuPaul is here. And being a former radio brethren, you know, that's all you're going to get out of me, kid. No, you can give us a little bit more. Come on, Michelle. It's just little old New Zealand. No one's listening.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Can Brie be on the show? Because she straddles this perfectly. It's down under. It's New Zealand and Australia. Brie is an Australian who's on the radio in New Zealand. I'll wipe the pit squad down, Michelle. I'll do anything. Oh, Brie, I think you and I both should sign up for that job, yeah?
Starting point is 00:02:47 Oh, lock it in. We'll double team them. Oh, I shouldn't have said that. Couple category ideas for you guys, New Zealand and Australia specific. I'm sure you've done your research. I'm sure you're well prepared. But what about something like Bar Bar Bad Sheep, where the contestants have to dress up like real naughty sheep?
Starting point is 00:03:07 I like that. Yeah, that's good. You are twisted, Clint. You are twisted. Yeah, okay. Is it a yes, though? A yes or a no? That's coming from Michelle Visage.
Starting point is 00:03:15 It's a yes. Cool. I love that. That's a yes for me. What about Crocodile Undie, and it's where the contestants strip down to their underwear and they have to wrestle a live crocodile? That's a yes from me as well.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Yeah, cool. I like that. And they have to wear all materials made from fake crocodile skin. Oh, fake crocodiles, yeah. If it's fake and no crocodiles get harmed. Yeah, that's good. Good, yeah. We can just dress someone.
Starting point is 00:03:39 We can just paint someone as a crocodile and they can wrestle one of the pit crew. That'd be nice. Yeah, fantastic. Can Bree, can you and I dress up like the wrestle one of the pit crew. That'd be nice. Yeah, fantastic. Ken Bree, can you and I dress up like the crocodile and wrestle the pit crew? See, now this is the ideas that I want to jump on board with, Michelle.
Starting point is 00:03:52 Okay, yes, that works for me. This is a hot, hot TV show that's coming this way. We're talking to Michelle Visage. RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under is coming to TV and Zed On Demand. It's being filmed right here in New Zealand, which is so exciting. I don't think you understand how big of a deal this is for me, Michelle. I've been watching the show for so many years. Michelle, we're so excited to have you guys here.
Starting point is 00:04:15 And from someone who's watched the show for years, can I just say thank you for being such an amazing ally to the LGBTQI plus community and bringing to light some really important issues over the years that I think have really changed society for the better. So I just wanted to thank you so much personally for that. I appreciate that. I'm a mother to a gay daughter and I have lots of, you know, one biological daughter, but I have hundreds of thousands of gay bees out there in the world. So you do not need to thank me for being an ally. I think it's just human behavior
Starting point is 00:04:44 to be an ally. So I am proud to call myself an ally, sweetheart. And you do not need to thank me for being an ally. I think it's just human behavior to be an ally. So I am proud to call myself an ally, sweetheart. And you make it look good too. Like you do it in such a sexy way. Yeah, you're a babe. Go on then. Michelle Visage. Tell me more.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Here to film RuPaul's Drag Race with RuPaul here in New Zealand, the Down Under edition. Thank you so much. Thank you. Talk to you soon. Oh, you're coming in to host the show. We'll see you soon. Shantae, you will stay. Thank you so much. Thank you. Talk to you soon. Oh, you're coming in to host the show. We'll see you soon. Shantae, you will stay.
Starting point is 00:05:07 Thank you. ZM's Brianne Clint. Best of interviews. We're just sitting here talking, you know, shooting the shit. Becoming besties. You can say that word on radio. Yeah, you can say that word. Yeah, you can say it and pepper it in every now and then.
Starting point is 00:05:23 Yeah, so he's used that one up. I've used my one. For half an hour. So now in the next half an hour, you can say that. You can pepper it in every now and then. I've used my one. For half an hour. So now in the next half an hour you can use one. For real? Well, you've got, you're in credit with one if you want to use it. Oh, you can use it now. No, I can't. The radio girl in me cannot do it. Michelle Visage of RuPaul's Drag Race fame. We're just
Starting point is 00:05:38 thinking, oh, we should pillage her phone book. She'll know some famous people. Who have you found? And then she drops the bombshell on us, Clint. She goes, because we mentioned this person. And then Michelle goes, oh, she's my best friend. She's my best friend. I'll call her up right now.
Starting point is 00:05:54 Who knows Anastasia? Anastasia. That's right. Anastasia. The Anastasia. Not our producer Anastasia. The Anastasia. The realastasia. Not our producer, Anastasia. The Anastasia. The real one.
Starting point is 00:06:06 Oh, my God. You queen. When are you coming back to New Zealand, Anastasia? Oh, my God. You just had me there in 2020. Really? You were here last year? How were you here last year?
Starting point is 00:06:24 The whole world was locked down. Thank you for remembering. What? I actually did a, I did concerts with, it was a concert with Billy Idol, me. Oh my God, you did too. That is so embarrassing for us. Billy Idol? That's a weird pairing.
Starting point is 00:06:43 That is so embarrassing for us. Well, it was great to have you here. It was a bunch of like, I don't you did, too. That is so embarrassing for us. Billy Idol. That's a weird pairing. That is so embarrassing for us. Well, it was great to have you here. No, it was a bunch of, like, I don't want to say it. It was a bunch of older, very well-known people. Good tip. And myself, who's so young. Yeah, a bunch of throwbacks, and then you to keep the youth interested, right, Anastasia?
Starting point is 00:07:03 Pretty much. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, Billy Idol's cool. I was the only woman interested, right, Anastasia? Pretty much. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, Billy Idol's cool. I was the only woman in the bill, so I felt kind of cool. Yeah. That is very cool. He did the Super Bowl yesterday.
Starting point is 00:07:12 Billy Idol performed at the Super Bowl. He did with Miley. You're in good company. I know. He's getting around, right? Yeah. Anastasia, can I say you come up on our show quite a lot. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:22 Does she? Yeah, she does come up on our show quite a lot. And we do she? Yeah, she does come up in our show quite a lot. And we do a segment on our show called Birthday Banger where we find out what was the number one song on people's 16th birthdays. And because, I mean, Anastasia, you were massive. You had some massive bangers. You come up all the time.
Starting point is 00:07:37 And I fought my ass off for you this one day where Clint tried to say that Phil bloody Collins was better than Anastasia. And I said, BS. I was like, don't you dare put this crap on. But you know what? No, he was right. No, no way.
Starting point is 00:07:56 No, I agree with Brie. Come on. No way. Phil Collins had some great songs. He did. In the 80s. Oh, my God. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:08:04 And if you want a b her, Michelle Anastasia, are you playing in the airfield college or are you playing Anastasia? No, exactly. Just like you said, if you want to bang her, it is. Can I just do a quick private conversation with Bree for a second? We're meant to be friends, and you're literally throwing me under the bus in front of Anastasia. What did I say to you that day? I said, this will come
Starting point is 00:08:27 back to bite you. Am I not here? What do you mean just Anastasia now? Am I no longer here? Well, I am Michelle Visage. I was going to say that I hate RuPaul's Drag Race or something. He also hasn't watched RuPaul's Drag Race before. You're not embarrassed anymore, are you? Oh, he's going to get it. You gave her the best banger
Starting point is 00:08:43 and you were right. Oh, he banged me good, Anast gave her the best anger and you were right. Oh, he banged me good, Anastasia. No, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right. That is enough pillaging of Michelle Visage. I feel like I can have a wine with Michelle and Anastasia. Anastasia, thanks for joining us this afternoon. What a rare treat. Talk to you soon, okay?
Starting point is 00:09:02 We've saved your phone number. We love you. And I'll keep fighting the good. Thanks, honey. Bye saved your phone number. We love you. And I'll keep finding the good... Bye. I love you. We're live with Michelle Visage. We're back in a moment. Bree and Clint.
Starting point is 00:09:13 ZM's Bree and Clint. Best of interviews. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the studio, basically Kiwi royalty these days. It's Netsky. Hey, man. Hey. How are you? Good. I'm. Hey. How are ya? Good.
Starting point is 00:09:28 I'm very good. How are you? I'd say welcome back to New Zealand, but you've been here for like three months now? It does feel like that. It does feel like that, eh? I've only came a couple of days. I got out of isolation a couple of days before we went and found stuff. I feel like Jacinda should just give you citizenship already. You're here that much.
Starting point is 00:09:43 Would it help? Would it make your path through immigration a bit easier? Because you're coming over a lot. Would it make your trip through a bit faster if we gave you honorary New Zealand citizenship? It was quite easy this year,
Starting point is 00:09:52 to be honest. It was about five passengers on my plane, so that made it. Oh, true. Oh, how good. Where did you have to quarantine? Did they ship you off to Rotorua
Starting point is 00:10:00 or did you go somewhere nice? I was in a very nice place, actually, the richest here in town. Oh, yeah, good. Yeah. Surprise shows at, good. Yeah. Surprise shows at RMV. Surprise shows at Bay Dreams? You popped up at Bay Dreams, is that right?
Starting point is 00:10:10 We saw you at Bay Dreams and it was in the crowd. You were walking around. I was actually with producer Anastasia who works on our show and all I remember is Anastasia losing her shit and being like, oh, my God, it's Boris! And then I had to contain her. So we did see you. We've been told by Anastasia today that she's not going to ask for a photo.
Starting point is 00:10:33 No. And I don't know if it's because she doesn't trust herself or what. What is the reason you're not asking for today's photo? I was just trying to play it cool. Just for context, Boris, lots of people come through here obviously she never you know she plays it real cool never asked for a photo and she goes this is the one person i want to get a photo with so oh we should definitely do that no no now if she gets the courage to ask one can you please say no yeah say i don't do photos i'll just ask for myself yeah
Starting point is 00:10:58 you're playing at spark arena in auckland tonight in your glass house show this thing sounds insane so it's you in the centre of the arena and what people can go all the way around you. Yeah, so there's no front left, which is an issue for Kiwis, I think. Nobody knows where to meet now. No. But it's going to be really fun.
Starting point is 00:11:17 You know, like it's the first time I'm in the middle of an arena like that. But this is really special. The stage is turning slowly as well. It's going to look really cool. Are you worried about Frothers getting motion sickness from the show? Bro, I swear to God he was right in front of me
Starting point is 00:11:32 like 45 seconds ago. And now he's behind me. And now he's behind me. I'm worried about myself being motion sick. But it's going to be great. I want to ask, how long does it take when you have an idea like this? It's such a big, elaborate idea. How long does it take from when you have the idea to actually you know be able to do this idea and perform this show and who pays for it yeah like do you go do you go to the some promoter and go i got a great idea it's
Starting point is 00:11:55 going to cost you a million dollars but i swear it's going to be good you hand them a drawn picture on a piece of paper is what's going to look like that's that's basically i would start with any show i guess um but i've been lucky enough to work with an amazing kiwi team uh including josh smith who's my tour manager who's been um who wasn't using a bit before me and ben dalglish who's uh the main designer and yeah i mean while i'm uh just relaxing in quarantine they're working really hard to get this show on the stage and you're just on whatsapp going love it love it hate it redo that yeah and i don't say hate it that often, which is good.
Starting point is 00:12:27 That's good to hear because it's tonight. Very good to hear. Let's hope you're ready. We've got a double pass to give away. Tonight is sold out at Spark with Netsky, but we've got a double pass to give away to tomorrow night at Spark Arena in Auckland. How do we want to do that?
Starting point is 00:12:38 We'll just text Netsky to 9696. Oh my God, the text machine's going to go nuts. The Glasshouse Tour is going to Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin as well The full tour details Are at Netsky.co.nz Boris Netsky
Starting point is 00:12:50 Good to see you man Good luck for tonight Thanks mate Take your sea legs ZM's Brian Clint Best of Interviews Ladies and gentlemen
Starting point is 00:13:00 Playing the New Zealand International Comedy Festival With their show We're Pregnant and the Baby is Music. Please welcome to the show, It's Too Hard. Yes. Oh, my God. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:13:12 Last time we saw you guys, you were opening for Brie at a funeral home. Yeah. That was, with the way things panned out, that was one of the biggest gigs we did last year. Yeah. That was foreboding, wasn't it? That was an interesting time. Yeah, because we were there to promote a show that never happened. Oh, and now you're here to promote... Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:13:32 You shouldn't have come back here. It's bad omen. I'm so stoked to have you guys in here because I'm fangirling hard. I've been to your show. This will be my fourth year in a row if you don't count last year. But I bought tickets.
Starting point is 00:13:47 Great. But there was just no show. So I'm super stoked. Are you guys so excited to be actually doing the show this year? Yes. So excited. It's going to be so much fun. And I'm even more excited before this.
Starting point is 00:13:59 We were just talking, Bree, that your mum's coming. Yes. The woman that does, Briannaanna is coming to the show. I told her about you guys last night, and she loves a bit of comedy. She'll be the loudest person in the audience, and I've sat her right up the front on her own. I'm sitting down the back. Yeah, good.
Starting point is 00:14:17 But she'll be right up the front. That eye contact would be too much. Yeah, if you want to see my mum, she's coming to the show this Saturday night. She's got two hearts. She's opening. She'll be at the bar just going Brianna She doesn't know that yet
Starting point is 00:14:29 We should sample that and put it on a track It's doable Look if you haven't got tickets yet And you're not convinced I feel like this is about to convince A lot of people listening Because you guys are going to do a live performance Alright, well should we do this?
Starting point is 00:14:46 I'm excited for this Our first ever live Two Hearts performance What song are you guys going to do? This song is about wine You guys are fans of lovely wine? Love wine Love a lovely drop Love a drop
Starting point is 00:14:58 Love the blood of Christ Well, you know, a lot of people they go around They talk about what their favourite type of wine is, right? But we've got What's your favourite type of wine, Laura? Both, red and white. You like both? Yeah, both. At the same time.
Starting point is 00:15:10 I know a lot about wine. Yeah. Two colours. All right, let's not get too technical. We don't want to alienate the non-wine drinkers that are listening right now. Right, right, right. But this is our ode to both types of wine. This is Strip Back and Acoustic.
Starting point is 00:15:23 Two hearts, live in the studio. Have a Chardonnay, I'd like to try something oaky. That's when the vintner said, Slow down, son. Red and white wine don't mix stick with one. You want a Chardonnay? Well, heed my warning. If you're mixing up your wines, you'll regret it in the morning. I laughed and I said, man, I know what I'm doing. Therefore, this white wine I will be pursuing. Red and white wine, a combination so heavenly.
Starting point is 00:16:03 It'll change your life if you follow this recipe. I drink the red wine. I drink the white wine, a combination so heavenly, it'll change your life if you follow this recipe. I drink the red wine, I drink the white wine, mix them off the side of me as Tommy Rose. I drink the red wine, I drink the white wine, drink them at the same time, Tommy Rose. Tell me who's a Tommy Rose. People say don't mix them, no way Jose. That's what they say. Tommy Rose, Tommy Rose, a full bodied wine and a full bodied. People say don't mix them, no way Jose Tell me Jose, tell me Jose A full bodied wine and a full boday
Starting point is 00:16:29 Tell us the story Laura I was at a work function after hours in my office Looking for some vino to pour in my orifice Working the bar with Trevor from HR I said give me one sauvignon blanc and one sarra Trevor said I'm sorry you must have misspoken. You can't have two wines. You've only got one drink token.
Starting point is 00:16:49 I said, give me both bottles and I'll let you touch my boobs. As the head of HR, I do not approve. Laura, your behavior has gotten out of control. You can't mix wines in a management role. I said, shut up, Trevor. Quit being such a dope. I'm a classy lady making rosé in my stomach I drink the red wine, I drink the white wine
Starting point is 00:17:09 Mix them up inside of me, that's tummy rosé I drink the red wine, I drink the white wine Drink them at the same time, tummy rosé Flushing up inside of me and I ain't talking sex play Wanna see the tenants, then you gotta get an x-ray Keep my wine warm. Skin like a duvet. Body looking curvy
Starting point is 00:17:27 cause my tummy is a cuvee. Tummy rosé, tummy rosé. People say don't mix them. No way, rosé. It's more opera. Tummy rosé, tummy rosé. A full-bodied wine in a full-bodied.
Starting point is 00:17:40 Here's something. Your tummy talents don't stop with plunk. Your body is amazing. It can make what you want. Don't waste your money on homeware appliances. Wait until you see how incredible science is. What else can you make with your tummy, Joseph?
Starting point is 00:17:55 I make a tummy pizza. Yeah, I eat a bag of flour. Then I drink a cup of water and I wait a half an hour. I eat a whole tomato. I eat a pepperoni. And I never waste money on a pizzeria phony. I never, never buy an espresso machine. I pour boiling water down my throat till I scream.
Starting point is 00:18:13 Coffee in my mouth, teeth crunching the beans. The power of the tummy is beyond your wildest dreams. I eat a sheet of pasta. Then I eat some bolognese. Then I eat a sheet of pasta. Then I eat some bechamel. Then I eat a sheet of pasta. Then I eat some bolognese. Then I eat a sheet of pasta. Then I eat some bolognese Then I eat a sheet of pasta Then I eat some bechamel Then I eat a sheet of pasta Then I eat some bolognese
Starting point is 00:18:27 Then I eat a sheet of pasta Then I eat some bechamel You know what it is I eat a sheet of pasta Then I eat some bolognese It's big Scooby-dooby I eat a sheet of pasta
Starting point is 00:18:37 Then I eat some bolognese Then I eat a sheet of pasta Then I eat some bechamel I drink the red wine I drink the white wine Mix them up inside of me That's Tommy Rose I drink the red wine. I drink the white wine. Mix them up inside of me. That's Tommy Rose.

Starting point is 00:19:07 Yeah, there will be a special on Tommy Rose at the bar. Not made by you guys, will it? No, yeah, it's two glasses of wine for the price of two glasses of wine. Tell them Laura sent you. Amazing. ZM's Bree and Clint. Best of interviews. Check one, two.
Starting point is 00:19:22 Hello, hello, hello. Are you there? Hello, I am. Oh, my God. Okay, let us do our big intro, okay? Hello, hello, hello. Are you there? Hello, I am. Oh my God! Let us do our big intro, okay? We've rehearsed this. She's won five Grammys. She's been on a four-year musical hiatus. She only has three photos on her Instagram,
Starting point is 00:19:40 two albums released so far, and one brand new song today. Please, welcome back to ZM. It's Lorde Hi Hello Lorde Incredible intro thank you so much Oh thank you we worked on that yeah we researched the numbers did you like the bit where we were at 5 4 3 2 1 I loved it
Starting point is 00:20:01 It's pretty easy when you've got the statistics to back it up like you do. Hey, what's going on, man? We haven't heard from you in ages. Yeah, you know, I just hibernate for a bit in the studio and then I pop back out with a brand new universe for you to enjoy. And yeah, that's today. This is amazing. And I feel like after the 18 months that we've all had,
Starting point is 00:20:25 this is exactly what we've needed. So thank you for that. Oh, I'm glad to hear that. Yeah, a lot of people have been like, is this a pandemic-related pop song? I'm like, no, we actually wrote it like two years ago. It feels so right for this moment, weirdly. Do you think we'll get pandemic-related pop songs?
Starting point is 00:20:45 I mean, I wouldn't put it past anyone, you know? I wouldn't be shocked. Is it a theme? Is it a motif that would pop off? I'd love to hear a Lorde track about being in track pants for a week and a half, and, you know, that sounds like a banger. Not my buzz. I'm all joy, all dance. There's a lot of pressure on us to get the details, the tea, all the info about the new project, so let's rip straight into it.
Starting point is 00:21:09 Who did you produce Solar Power with, the song and the album? I did the song with Jack Antonoff, who I did my last record with as well. We wrote and produced almost everything on the album. I also worked with a really cool guy called Malay, who is most well-known for his work with Stink Ocean. So the three of us kind of did everything together, but very tight crew, as usual with me, just mainly me and Jack, you know, mincing around in the studio.
Starting point is 00:21:40 I think the question I want to know from you is that a lot of Kiwis will be watching the amazing music video that was released today and thinking, where was this in our beautiful country? Where was this filmed? Hey! I don't want to disclose the location because it's just so beautiful. It's a secret. You don't want everyone to know about it. But, you know, everyone has that beach in New Zealand.
Starting point is 00:22:06 It's just their secret spot that they love to go to every summer. And I wanted that to really represent this. But it was such an amazing beach. You're like a fisherman not giving up his secret fishing spot, you know? Yes, I am a fisherman. And, yeah, it's in me not to reveal the spot. Can you tell us, though, is that your favourite spot, like where you filmed?
Starting point is 00:22:26 Is it your favourite beach? It is now. I actually hadn't been there before the video, but I've got a few of those up my sleeve for sure. Sentinel Beach still up there? Bay Beach, actually. Oh, nice. Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:41 On the video, are you smoking a fennel bulb in the video? Yes, I am. Wow. I took your standard apple bong and made it a bit more chic, a bit more me. Does that add like an aniseed-y, licorice taste to whatever you're imbibing? You know, I'm sure it would if you hit it for long enough and the fennel would start to roast, you know. It's an absolute vibe.
Starting point is 00:23:12 Thank you so much. Was it a yes on the referendum? Yes or no? Oh, my God. Are you kidding? Everyone knows. It's a yes. It's a yes.
Starting point is 00:23:22 Thanks a lot, boomers. You really screwed that one up for us. Yeah, good one. Fennel prices would have gone through the roof. Oh, man. Hey, with this new album and when it does drop, do we have a date for when the whole album, Solar Power, is going to come out, Lorde?
Starting point is 00:23:35 We don't. It's kind of a summertime thing, an American summertime thing. That's all I can say for now. But there is an album that is coming in the very near future. Do you genuinely believe you're going to get to tour this album worldwide with the way the world is at the moment? Are you planning to tour it worldwide? I mean, it would be amazing to tour.
Starting point is 00:23:59 I hope I can tour. I guess I'll see what happens. I know some people that are planning tours but I I've got my fingers crossed on that one for sure I think this album is gonna be so sick live we'll see so do we because I mean COVID can't take that from us Lord it's already taken enough it's not going to take a Lord tour away from us I want to know the last time you were obviously releasing new music you were in the midst of getting your driver's license is that something you've ticked off in the last four years um i think the service
Starting point is 00:24:30 has just gone really bad and now i can't hear you i didn't get it but i didn't take the test i was gonna say did you fail it or did you not take i didn't fail i just haven't taken it i'm very it's very naughty every year it's my New Year's resolution and every year it gets pushed out another year. So what do you do? Only because I'm busy. I'm so busy. So how do you get to your favourite beach?
Starting point is 00:24:54 Do you Uber everywhere? I've got a couple of, I mean, everyone can drive except for me. So, you know, I go with people. You're a permanent passenger. Yeah, yeah. I'm a permanent passenger, guys. It's so embarrassing.
Starting point is 00:25:05 Maybe this year will be the year. What do you struggle the most with? Is it a reverse park or what is it? Oh, no, I'm pretty good. Like, I can drive. I just don't practice that much.
Starting point is 00:25:16 I think it's like knowing who goes at an intersection. You know, I'm like, is it me? Yeah. Well, these are important. I am pretty good.
Starting point is 00:25:23 These are important things to figure out before the test. So maybe don't take the test just yet. Yeah, yeah. Let's go back to Soul of Power, the song that came out today for a moment. In there, you refer to yourself as kind of like a prettier Jesus. I've got a question for you. Who do you think had better hair?
Starting point is 00:25:41 Actual Jesus? Jonathan Van Ness from Queer Eye, a.k.a. Gay Jesus, or you? Who had or has better hair? Or Becky, who has good hair. It's got to be JVN, right? His hair is so glossy and luscious. I could never compete.
Starting point is 00:25:58 It's unreal. It's what he does for a living, so, you know, he's got that on his side. I can't win it all. Okay, so just for the record, goes jvn you then jesus because you're kind of like a prettier jesus that's the order yeah okay that is seriously the favorite my favorite line i've heard in a pop song in so long thank you for that my last question for you lord we're all very hung over here from the radio awards last night
Starting point is 00:26:23 yes i've heard about this you've done the dirty on us this is like my interview of my career and i'm very hungover um oh my gosh i want the tip from you what's your go-to hangover cure meal i am this is sort of an unpopular opinion but i reckon you've got to go fresh and load up on the nutrients. You feel like you want something trashy, greasy, carby. Yes, I do. But you want fresh. You want fresh. It'll set you up. A couple of salads
Starting point is 00:26:53 maybe. A fried egg. I think it's dope. I'm going to try that. You're not a hungover workout person, are you, Lord? Don't. No. No, I'm not a hungover workout person. Totally not. The days are right off, but the next day I'll hit it hard.
Starting point is 00:27:09 Hey, just one question that was not actually on our list, Bree, before you go. And while we've got you here, because we don't know when we'll get you on here again, do you remember running into Bree at a concert that time? Um, tell me more about it.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Yeah, let me give you a few details um it was a brood show look we've got we've got to clear this up we have to clear this up so embarrassed like you've been you've been living with this for the longest time it's time to oh my god oh no so we're at a broods concert we're at the town hall in auckland and brie comes over big fan fan, goes in for... The biggest fan. I came over. You were so lovely to me. You were so welcoming. I did the really awkward thing.
Starting point is 00:27:52 I assumed the hug. You put out the hand for the handshake. Oh, no. We intercepted and I kind of motorboated your hand in my boobs. Oh, my God. Well, that sounds like a very joyful experience. Thank you so much. It was great for me.
Starting point is 00:28:11 That was such a good show. I remember that. It was amazing. I'm so glad you don't remember the most awkward moment of my life. So the hand motorboat hasn't lived with you since 2017, the same way it's lived with Brie. It hasn't stuck in my brain but honestly now i i want to do it all over again so let's make that happen we can make we can
Starting point is 00:28:30 make we can make that happen this is the best day of everyone's keen and willing we can make a negative into a positive that's why we love you um we're so excited for new music we can only get updates on email now right you're not going to post this stuff on social media, right? Exactly, yes. So you've got to sign up for my mailing list. Yes. It's 2002 over here
Starting point is 00:28:51 and that's what we're doing. Make sure it's not going to your spam filter. Thank you for chatting with us and thanks for brand new music. Ladies and gentlemen, it's the return of Lords. Honestly, so cool.
Starting point is 00:29:08 This is such an amazing moment for me. And thank you for being so amazing. You wait for the motorboat. The motorboat is definitely going to top this moment. Thank you. Bye. Thanks, guys. See ya.
Starting point is 00:29:23 Well, that just happened. Why would you do that? We're on the same level. It's fine. It's not a big deal for her, so it doesn't need to be a big deal for you. No, she didn't even remember. It's a fantasy.
Starting point is 00:29:38 Plus, how good is the video going to be when we recreate it? Oh, my God. All we need now is broods, and hopefully they're free. Kill magic. It's so good. Anastasia,
Starting point is 00:29:48 book the town hall. We're coming back. ZM's Brian Clint. Best of interviews. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the studio fellow Aussies, Matt and Jack
Starting point is 00:29:59 from the Inspired Unemployed. Welcome to New Zealand. Thank you. How's that applause? I know, it feels good. We have a crowd that's out there in the booth that just does it. Give them a little wave. You have to come in every day and make us feel good.
Starting point is 00:30:13 Yeah, yeah. It's good for us. It's good self-esteem. Speaking of feeling good, do you guys feel all right after getting tackled by the All Blacks? Feeling pretty rough, to be honest. I was just worried about this nose ring. I just got that put in. So the nose ring is part of what you guys have been doing with Uber, right?
Starting point is 00:30:26 It's the this or that thing where people decide what you have to do. What was the other option? I got my nipple and he got his nose. Oh, man, it hurts. Well, Clint would know. Haven't you got the gooch piss? Yeah, yeah, yeah. No way.
Starting point is 00:30:38 Give us a look. Give us a look. That's a lot. Give it out. Give us a look. We wanted to do something similar with you guys this afternoon. So while you're here, we thought, why let the fun stop now? Even though the Uber part of it is over.
Starting point is 00:30:49 Uh-oh, what's going on here? What about some more this or that? I thought we could play a bit of a game where we come up with, you know, the this or the that, and then you guys can pick the this or the that for each other. Okay. Who wants to go first? Yep. Get it over and done with.
Starting point is 00:31:01 All right. All right, so your first option in your this or that is you can either do a shot of anchovy oil. I thought Monday's the day where we're done. Producer Anastasia. Why do you even bother coming in here? This is no fun. Bring in. So that's one of your options.
Starting point is 00:31:16 It doesn't look great. I'll be honest. No. What is this? Or. Or. Or. Who is the most famous person in your phone right now?
Starting point is 00:31:25 I'll do the shot. There's no one famous, that's why. Alright, you ready for the shot? You're actually going to do it. It's fresh though, it's fresh. It's just come from the supermarket. Am I going to die or what? No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:31:37 Fresh out of the jar. It's like a Mediterranean diet. It's good for you. I don't have to eat anchovy in it. No, no. Just do the shot. Just do the shot. That's just for appetiser.
Starting point is 00:31:45 Drink their liquids. Jack from the Inspired Unemployed. Oh, did you get this? Can we get a bit in here? How did you do that? Get that. Get the last bit. No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:31:58 Oh, dude. That tastes like shit. Well done. Well done. Well done. That was bloody good. That was very impressive. Very impressive.
Starting point is 00:32:04 But Matt, you're up next. You're this or that. The first one is you can either scull a beer and we put this shot collar around your arm whilst you're doing that. Or you can go out into the office where you don't know anyone. You're a guest here at ZM today.
Starting point is 00:32:21 And you can announce to the entire office that you've just taken a big poo in the toilet. I might go tell everyone this is shit. All right, let's get it on the line. Can I have a sip of your beer then? Yeah, you take the beer and wash down the anchovy oil. There's a phone waiting out there for you. You go outside, grab the phone.
Starting point is 00:32:38 We'll put that on speaker. It needs to be convincing, so you need to be yelling this. Like, can I have everyone's attention and then announce what you need to announce? Good luck. Good luck, brother. All right, here we go. All right. Okay, here we go.
Starting point is 00:32:51 Oh, no. This is bad. Oh, he would be so embarrassed right now. I'd be embarrassed, and I work here. What am I doing? Yeah, is it not too late to come back and get the beer? No, the beer's gone. I've already finished it.
Starting point is 00:33:01 Yeah. All right, I'm about to go for it. So are you doing? Hey, everyone. I was going to let know. I just did it like a massive Anyone has a plunger This is bad, that's disgusting. I'm sorry. That's too far One million Instagram followers Just some egoistic dickhead that just walked out.
Starting point is 00:33:27 I'd be like, who is this guy? This guy loves himself. Way more cringe than what I thought it was going to be. Well, you should try listening to it, man. It was pretty bad. Matt and Jack from the Inspired Unemployed. That was bloody good. That was very good.
Starting point is 00:33:38 Before you guys go, I'm pretty sure, Jack, you and I are cousins. No. I think we are. So your last name is Steel with an E on the end. I don't know if you're joking or not right now. I'm not joking. I'm pretty sure, Jack, you and I are cousins. No. I think we are. So your last name is Steel with an E on the end. I don't know if you're joking or not right now. No, I'm not joking. I'm not joking. My mum's maiden name is Steel,
Starting point is 00:33:51 so I'd like some of the royalties of you. And excitingly, the last this or that is pass your cousin. It's legal here in New Zealand. And Jack from The Inspired Unemployed. Bloody good to see you guys thank you cheers ZM's Brian Clint
Starting point is 00:34:09 best of interviews ladies and gentlemen please welcome to the studio the winner of RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under it's Keita B
Starting point is 00:34:17 she's a winner baby you did it you won what the heck oh my god this is so surreal for me I can't imagine what it's like for you You did it. You won. What the heck? Oh, my God. This is so surreal for me. I can't imagine what it's like for you. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:34:31 It's totally not real. This is you, by the way. This is you. You're on Spotify, baby. What's that like, hearing yourself? You're a recording artist now. Oh, my God. Well, I mean, there's a lot of filters over that vocal.
Starting point is 00:34:46 Come on now. A little bit of reverb. We do a bit of karaoke on this show. We can tell when someone can see. What is a good queen without a bit of a filter, though, you know? Amen. Right? It's all part of the fun.
Starting point is 00:34:58 I thought I'd need a filter on my mouth to be honest. Me too. Get the dental dams. This is a win for New Zealand by the way It was Trans-Tasman, it was RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under And you've done it for New Zealand How good is that? We should actually give you one of these too
Starting point is 00:35:13 Welcome in Her Royal Highness The winner of RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under, Keita May The winning prize for RuPaul's Drag Race is, well, the cash component is 30 grand, right? 30 grand cash? Yeah. Have you got it yet? No.
Starting point is 00:35:31 Oh, no! No, it can't be trusted with it, apparently. Really? No, no, no, no. It's coming, it's coming. Okay. Ketamine, look, you and I, I've been messaging you on Instagram
Starting point is 00:35:41 throughout the whole competition, just being like, girl, you got this. I'm backing you in for the win. And then I had this thought where I was like I wonder if she actually knows if she's won or not and then I realized you didn't even know that you'd won right yeah 100% so we don't they um I knew that I'd made it to the last episode um and I knew who was obviously in the last episode with me but right before before we wrapped filming, basically the last thing we all did was they filmed four alternate endings. So everyone had to pretend like they'd won. Every single one of us.
Starting point is 00:36:13 But the funny thing is it was more, people often have asked me today a lot, like, does that mean the reaction's not authentic? The less authentic reactions are probably like the ones where I didn't win and I'm just, you know, you have to do the clap like congratulations and like the smile. I loved the most seeing your self-discovery
Starting point is 00:36:34 and your adventure in terms of like how you grew so much as a person and learnt so much about yourself. Did you think that that's how it was going to go for you on the show? No, not at all. That's the funny thing. That's something i struggled with on the show because usually when i'm in drag performing for an audience i'm just like keita the crazy clown lady that's like having a few drinks saying some out rant like outrageous jokes and just sort of having a good time a little
Starting point is 00:36:59 bit quicker now that i've lost a few kilos see what i mean key to me is here you've just won rupaul's drag race down under i think i mean i've grown up watching rupaul's drag race um and from someone like me who is in the community watching has been such an outlet for so many people and i think when it came to australia and new zealand it was such a special thing because it felt like our countries and our communities were getting showcased and you're such an amazing representative for you know Australia and New Zealand and our community so congratulations from us oh thank you that's so sweet of you you know like it's a lot of pressure because like also like I am not the perfect uh you know like role
Starting point is 00:37:42 model like that's why you're perfect. I'll have too much champagne and just totally make a boob of myself at the club. Hashtag Saturday night. I think that's part of why you won. Oh, well. Ladies and gentlemen, your RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under champion, Keita May!
Starting point is 00:38:00 Woo! This is super exciting, Clint, and we always love to talk to extraordinary people, and this woman fits into that category, that's for sure. She's of a very small group of people in the world, about 60 known cases, and she's got a condition called Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory, or HCM, where they're able to remember an incredible amount
Starting point is 00:38:37 of their past experiences. It's amazing to have her on the show. Please welcome Rebecca Sharrock. Hello. Hi, Rebecca. Hi, how are you? We're good. We're very well.
Starting point is 00:38:48 You can literally remember everything, Rebecca. Yeah, about 95% of the things which have happened from the time I was born to now, and for some reason they're trying to figure it out. Incredible, Bec. Can I ask, because you said you're able to remember like 95% from when you were born, what is the earliest memory you have and how old were you?
Starting point is 00:39:13 The earliest I did have, there was an experience when I was 12 days old that I saw a photo of it many years later and I was telling my mum about this experience. And then I said to mum, here's the experience I was talking about. And you were 12 days old. You remember something from being 12 days old. That is incredible. We were reading that this superpower that you've got means that you can remember what you had for breakfast on, say, the 3rd of July 2003.
Starting point is 00:39:44 Yeah, and the 3rd of July 2003 was a Thursday. Yeah, okay, yeah. Wow. And do you remember anything from that day? I just remember I was at school. It was a girl in my class's birthday. We were, the teacher just sat us down. You know, it was the, I remember it was the beginning of the day.
Starting point is 00:40:06 It was quite cold. I was in a, was in my jumper. And then the teacher was just saying, weeks fly by so fast. It's Thursday already. Have you finished your assignment, which is due in a couple of days time. Rebecca, not that we don't believe you. It's incredible. I've just gone and double checked it. Look at this, Brie.
Starting point is 00:40:25 It was a Thursday. The 3rd of July 2003 was a Thursday. That's unbelievable, Rebecca. Can we test your memory? Do you remember what day of the week it was on February 10th 2012? February the 10th
Starting point is 00:40:41 2012 was a Friday. it was a friday whoa you you're a massive fan beck of is this correct pokemon and harry potter yes with pokemon i like all of everything to do with nintendo so mario pokemon all that kind of thing zel. Zelda, yes, very good. Love it. I wanted to ask you because I read somewhere that you can actually, if we start a passage from a Harry Potter page in any Harry Potter book, you actually know like the end of that passage
Starting point is 00:41:20 and you can recite back the passage. Is that right? Yes, but the thing is I have to start at the beginning. I can start any chapter. It doesn't have to be the start of the book, but I do have to go from the beginning to the end for some reason. I don't know why. Right.
Starting point is 00:41:35 Is it okay if we test you on one passage? Yes. And you don't have to say the book or the chapter name either. Okay, perfect. Great. That's amazing. You're either. Okay, perfect. Great. That's amazing. You're incredible. I'll start it here.
Starting point is 00:41:48 Malfoy couldn't believe his eyes. Believe his eyes when he saw that Harry and Ron were still alive, still at Hogwarts next day, looking tired but perfectly cheerful. Wow, that's amazing. Indeed, by next morning, Harry and still going. Harry and Ron thought. That's word for word. I've got the passage here in front of me. Can you tell us?
Starting point is 00:42:12 Rebecca, I've got goosebumps all over my body. Chapter 10, Halloween, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. That's right. That's exactly what I said. Rebecca, talking to you has been so incredible today and we've learned so much, so thank you very much for your time.
Starting point is 00:42:28 Before you go, the ultimate test of your memory, and this is a big one, I don't know if you're going to be able to get this one, it's very forgettable. Has she logged it? Do you remember our names? I know I was told about Bree because Bree comes from, Dan thought we go out there a lot. That's amazing.
Starting point is 00:42:47 That's exactly right. Yeah, you've got Bree. And who's the other guy? I know the person who emailed me was Ben. That's right. All the most important people. Beck, you've got it. You've remembered them all.
Starting point is 00:43:00 There's no Clinton there anyway. No, you know what? Doesn't matter. Very forgettable anyway. We understand. One of the most incredible people we've ever had the pleasure of having on the show. Thank you so much for your time. And we appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:43:13 Thanks. That's generous. Thanks, Bec. There she is. Rebecca Sharrock. One of the only known 60 cases of people in the world who has a condition called highly superior autobiographical memory where she's able to remember pretty much everything. ZM's Bree and Clint best of interviews Will from Saatchi in India one of the vocalists who works with Saatchi are in studio this morning
Starting point is 00:43:40 because together we have worked on a hashtag collab to produce Bree's secret poetry into a song. No one's heard it yet. Well, except for us. We've heard it. Let's hope you guys have heard it. It's good. It's actually really good. India, who's been singing it.
Starting point is 00:43:54 It's actually really good. Yeah. Well, you've got some of the best in the business to polish what I'm calling probably turd lyrics. So we'll see. Back yourself. Back yourself. Okay yourself, okay? Here's the poetry without music.
Starting point is 00:44:07 This is what we discovered last week. Contacts, it's contacts. I don't know if I can listen to this. Feeling stuck. Stuck in this game called love. Just need to rise above. Above out of my mind. The love I never had to find. need to rise above. Above out of my mind.
Starting point is 00:44:26 The love I never had to find. It was always there. In this. I never want there to be a last kiss. We know. We get it. This is the fourth time we've heard it. The time has come. Brie, do we have your permission to debut your
Starting point is 00:44:43 poetry as a song? Yeah, go on. People have put in work. I'm not going to deny, you know, all the hard work. Will from Saatchi, when you're ready, would you introduce the song with its name? Okay. No, this is serious.
Starting point is 00:44:56 What would be the artist? Would it be Brie? Brie featuring India and Saatchi. Yeah. Stark, brackets, game called love. Here we go. I need to rise above, out of my mind, the love I never had to find in you. All I see is you and me. How did I get to be above, out of my mind, plus you were never equal to
Starting point is 00:45:48 Then I realized that me plus you were never equal to Now I'm feeling stuck, stuck in this game called love Stuck in this game called love Stuck in this game called love Stuck Stuck in this game called love Stuck in this game called love That's all they paid us for. I mean...
Starting point is 00:46:17 I mean... Is it fire? I think it might be fire. Fire. I mean, how amazing are you in here? Your voice is incredible. And how amazing are the boys from... I already know how amazing you guys are at making beats and tunes and stuff.
Starting point is 00:46:34 Yeah. Pretty bloody good. But the feedback is pouring in already. We've got banger. We've got fire emoji. We've got you have to release the song. It's blowing up. It's a one minute...
Starting point is 00:46:44 Honestly, we do a lot of, you know, funny stuff, pranks on each other or whatever. You guys did an amazing job on that. Thank you so much. Are you guys happy with it? Yeah. Low-key, yes. Pretty bloody good.
Starting point is 00:46:54 It was the easiest song I've ever written. I didn't have to do the lyrics. Yeah. ZM's Brianne Clint. Best of interviews. The Olympic Games, I don't know if you've heard, begin tomorrow And we're very lucky this morning to be joined on the show By a member of the five-time world champion Black Fern Seven team
Starting point is 00:47:14 Welcome to the show, Ruby Dewey Kia ora, Ruby Good morning, guys I love you guys' energy Always bringing it, I love it Hey, we'll bring the vibes if you guys bring the wins. No pressure, Bruce. Ruby is a Kiwi in Tokyo right now.
Starting point is 00:47:33 You're in Japan for the Games now, right? Yep. We've only just got here. It was such a mystery getting to the country, you know, travelling and you've got to make sure the Olympic Village will have you and you've got to get your test. You've got to have a – it's like a licence to say that you've got to make sure the Olympic Village will have you. You've got to get your test. You've got to have a, it's like a licence to say that you've got no COVID.
Starting point is 00:47:52 You've got to have a valid 72-hour COVID licence to say you're COVID free. So it's a mish, but so thankful and grateful we finally got here. In the last seven days, how many times have you had that thing stuck up your nose? Oh my goodness, bro. Like, I think three. And the throat one. I haven't had the throat one we get both nostrils and the throat all at once oh do they deep throat you do they go all the way the back
Starting point is 00:48:10 of the sorry that was bad choice of words no yes no clint it's been a long time like it's horrible yeah that's terrible hey question i want to ask because it's been making the news all week what are the cardboard beds like i heard about the how they've been calling them the sex-free beds. Yeah, no, they're pretty sturdy. I reckon you could still get a couple of people on them. Yeah, right. These are the anti-sex beds that are in the Olympic Village made of cardboard.
Starting point is 00:48:36 Because I feel like out of, you know, any of the athletes, the rugby players would need a comfy bed after they compete, you know? Yeah, we're pretty precious, aren't we? No, no, no. We're no complaints from the rugby players, and I think that speaks for them.
Starting point is 00:48:50 They're very good beds. Ruby, speaking of playing, I remember watching the sevens final, you guys versus Australia, and you had been the favourites the whole tournament, but unfortunately you lost that game. But you picked up silver in the Olympics, which is amazing. I know for a fact you guys still have seven of the players that were there in Rio back for Tokyo. How are you guys feeling in terms of going into the tournament?
Starting point is 00:49:16 Who do you guys think is your biggest competition? It's funny. Every time I get interviewed by an Australian, they always bring up the Rio final. Hey, Ruby, that's all we have in rugby union. That's all we have, okay? Thanks a lot, Bree. That's all we have to hang on to.
Starting point is 00:49:33 You know, I think we're finally over it five or so years later. So thanks for bringing that up, Bree, but we're going to take that in with us, don't worry. Mate, in all honesty, in all honesty, look, I'm from queensland i'm a rugby league girl and back in 2016 i didn't know much before moving to new zealand about rugby union but i have to say watching you guys and the aussie girls in the rugby sevens was a massive highlight for me in rio and i'm so stoked that you know something like sevens is getting such a big glow up in the olympics i think it's awesome and you guys deserve every bit of credit and praise that you that something like Sevens is getting such a big glow up in the Olympics.
Starting point is 00:50:05 I think it's awesome, and you guys deserve every bit of credit and praise that you get. Oh, gee, that was a nice follow-up question, making me feel a little nice. It's really cool, and thank you guys for wanting to do this interview and supporting us. It's massive for women's rugby and for Simmons. We just hope that everyone will get on board,
Starting point is 00:50:23 and no one can be there. Our families can't physically be there, which will be hard. But everybody can jump online and get behind it. Let's talk about that for a second, the fact that your family can't be there. No one can be there. It's a weird, it's a very weird Olympics.
Starting point is 00:50:36 What's the vibe like in Japan, in Tokyo at the moment, around the Olympics? To be honest, we can't do much. We can't actually go out and have a look around, but it's way more hygiene focused. If you want to do anything, you've got to, there's a whole bunch of paperwork you've got to do. And with the family not being there, that's really weird, to be honest.
Starting point is 00:50:55 But it's funny because it takes me back to, like, 2012 when we just had no crowds. Like, 10 years ago, nobody knew who we were. Oh, true. Good point. Ruby, I just got goosebumps from that because I've followed any women that are doing amazing things in sport. I've always followed that. And that's what I mean when I say I think it's so amazing to see
Starting point is 00:51:17 how much support and how much people have gotten behind you guys and your sport. You deserve it. And we can't wait to see you bring home the gold, baby. We're right behind you guys and your sport. You deserve it and we can't wait to see you bring home the gold baby. We're right behind you. Oh, I love you guys, man. I'll do an interview with you anytime. You guys are awesome. Sounds good. We'll call you five minutes
Starting point is 00:51:34 after the final whistle in the gold medal match and hopefully you're on the podium, okay? Let's make it happen. That's Ruby Toohey from the Black Fern Sevens coming to us out of Tokyo Ahead of the Olympic Games Go well girls
Starting point is 00:51:48 ZM's Brian Clint Best of Interviews Aaron Shizzy How are you guys feeling? We're feeling alright How are you going?
Starting point is 00:52:01 I'm good, yeah I'm good It's been kind of the opposite The last time I did all these interviews I was doing it at like one o'clock in the morning and now i'm doing it sort of six seven o'clock in the morning so it's good yeah well we've been kept very up to date we've just been told you've had a toilet break um so number one or two uh it was a p i've had like three coffees. My coffee cup, by the way, it's a guy saying at least the dog likes me and the dog's saying cunt.
Starting point is 00:52:30 Relatable. I love it. It's the best dog I've ever met. Hey, look, we don't have long with you and we're very excited to see you. We would love to interview you, but there's actually somebody that we know that we think would do a better job than us. Okay. Look, I'll give you some background real quick, Ed.
Starting point is 00:52:45 My mum is my all-time favourite person in this whole world and her all-time favourite person is you. Okay. It's awkward, but it's true. Yeah, it's awkward. It goes you, Ricky Martin, her kids and then her husband. You're at the top. Amazing.
Starting point is 00:53:01 Since I can remember, I've been doing some social like, social media videos or I get her on the radio and she always asks to be paid in either Ed Sheeran merch or Ed Sheeran CDs. Incredible. No matter how many times I try to explain to her, CDs aren't really, you know, the biggest thing anymore. I'll buy it for you on your phone. And she's like, great, I'll take that as payment.
Starting point is 00:53:23 So she's doing the interview? She doesn't know she's doing the interview. What we want to do is Brie's going to send her this Zoom link right now. Yeah. And we're just going to drop her into the interview. She knows that we're here. She thinks she's coming on to play the secret sound competition on the radio. Perfect.
Starting point is 00:53:44 This is going to be fun. Yeah. But this is a make good, Ed, because I actually pranked her with a fake Ed Sheeran a couple of years ago. I'll just show you just so you can get a vibe of what she's like. Hello, this is Ed Sheeran. Oh, my God. Oh, Brianna.
Starting point is 00:54:03 Oh, my God. He's one of the most talented young men. He's songwriting and his lyrics are just fantastic. I can't believe you just spoke to Ed Sheeran. I honestly can't believe it. Yeah, well, don't because it was my mate Digby. Brianna. Right.
Starting point is 00:54:21 So I figure this is my chance. What's her name? Di. Di, right die let's get the die on oh my god okay here we go i'm gonna text her right now she knows nothing so here we go she is 63 so it might take her a minute to jump on the chat but i'm in she's coming just be prepared for some classic boomer um camera and the Zoom facing around the wrong way action. Yeah, yeah, yeah, always.
Starting point is 00:54:49 You're honestly like saving me a million Christmas presents and birthday presents doing this. Appreciate this, Ed. I'm so in. This is going to be fun. Have we checked that Bree's mum has Wi-Fi? Oh, my God. Hey, Di.
Starting point is 00:55:03 Are we on the right meeting? How are you doing? Turn your camera on, Mum. Oh, my God. Hey, Di. Are we on the right meeting? How are you doing? Turn your camera on, Mum. Oh, my God. Turn your camera on, Mum and Di. Oh, my God. Turn your camera on. How do we do that?
Starting point is 00:55:16 Press. Oh. Press it. How do you do it? Oh, no. It's bottom left-hand corner. Oh, no. Bottom left-hand corner, there's a little thing that says video and there's like a there's like a red line through if you click click that little
Starting point is 00:55:31 red line the video there we go so die so die this is the this is the format you are doing the interview today so what would you like to know oh my god ed how on earth can you come up with the most amazing songs um i think it's i think it's uh uh i've i've i've written songs since i was like 13 14 um and uh they started off being really bad and the more and more i wrote the better they became and I feel like the more honest you are the better the song is so sometimes I feel scared to say something in a song because it might be too raw or too embarrassing and blah blah but I find when I listen to artists I go ah they said that and I feel like I can't say that and they're saying
Starting point is 00:56:21 exactly what I'm feeling so I find myself being more honest with songs and I feel like I can't say that. And they're saying exactly what I'm feeling. So I find myself being more honest with songs. And I think with songwriting, the harder you work at it, the luckier you become, basically. Mamadou, what a great question that was. Yeah, and that is off the top of my head. Oh, my God. Can you ask Ed something about the brand new album, please? I know we didn't prep you for this.
Starting point is 00:56:40 Can you ask him something? It's called Minus. It's called Equals, and it comes out this week. So could you ask him something about that? So what's inspired you the most on Equals? So when I was putting the album together, I mean, I started this album when I was 26 years old, and my life was that of a 26-year-old.
Starting point is 00:57:02 There wasn't that much responsibility. I was sort of touring, going out drinking, you know there wasn't that much responsibility i was sort of touring going out drinking partying so that's the album sort of started like that dating cherry and then uh mean cherry got engaged then we got married and then we had a kid i turned 30 i lost a very close friend of mine and in that sort of period of time that was the most inspiring song wise so this album sort of became an album about essentially like a quarter life crisis and trying to figure out who the hell I was now I was married with a kid and um 30 so uh much like plus is uh a snapshot and a diary entry of an 18 year old boy I'd say this is um an album
Starting point is 00:57:39 about like where I am at the moment being a 30 year old dad so would it be fair to say that your up and down of life experiences has led to this album yeah and I think I think each each of my last three albums have been that as well I mean divide was the up and down of life experiences but it was just a bit less uh grown up I mean, I was still, I felt I was grown up. I feel like I've really gone through some real, like real, real life stuff now. Like even just the birth of my child. I mean, you just assume,
Starting point is 00:58:15 I just assumed as like a 26 year old, I was like, right, birth just happens. And, you know, it's like six hours of craziness and then the baby's there, it's so much like no one really talks about how like full on it is for the the the mother and uh yeah it's just like that that was just like a day in my life that was such a like real life moment there was no control like usually i'm in such control of everything that i i do i have people employed to do this i have a security guard that takes from here to here and everything's like
Starting point is 00:58:47 set out. And suddenly you're in this moment. Same for like proposing. When I proposed that could go either way. She might say no, she might say yes. She might say maybe. And there's no certain thing. Whereas like today is a certain thing. I know that I'm doing 14 hours of interviews and like, that's, that's, that's my day. But yeah, it's hard. Mom, hey mom, tell Ed about when you gave birth to me that I broke your coccyx.
Starting point is 00:59:14 And my sister took a poo in her stomach. No, he doesn't need to hear about it. No, he knows, he knows. No, no, no. But all of this stuff, all of this stuff is like super, super common and you just don't, you don't realize, you know, you don't, you just don't know. You just don't know until you're in the moment and being like, you know, seeing the person you love the most in that much pain and you are powerless. You literally stand, you're, you, I kind of felt like I was just sort of in the corner of the room and the doctor was like, yeah, you need to just stay over there.
Starting point is 00:59:44 And then, but then when it's time for the big decisions to be made they go right what should we do and i'm like well but you're the doctor ed my um daughter was just born this year as well and i had the opposite experience the midwife said can you go down there and can you catch the baby oh wow yeah well we ours was a bit more um uh yeah full-on it was like there was like an emergency right okay but yeah um so yeah i didn't get to experience that but how was that like the most surreal experience of my life like Like, like you said, it's something you can't understand until you've done it. But this thing, it felt like a real life moment, didn't it?
Starting point is 01:00:29 Like sometimes I'll like, like for me being on stage at Wembley stadium, you're in front of 87,000 people or whatever. I don't really see that as a real life moment. That's such a surreal, like, no, yeah. I'm just kind of here and the people in the house, but in terms of things that you like that could go either way that you could that could be the best day of your life or the worst day of your life and it could happen in a split second and you have no control over it it's just in like whatever happens happens and that's that's what i mean by the real life the real life moments
Starting point is 01:00:59 basically we're getting we're getting we're getting oh sorry hey mom i think you've got one more question mom so make it make it your best one how do you get to be so relaxed in front of 80 000 people and perform like you do it just seems to come from the heart it just seems so real to me when I'm watching it. Thank you. I have played, I mean, literally thousands of shows, and it's my passion. I love it. When I first moved to London, it was about how many shows I could fit in a night. I would play anywhere.
Starting point is 01:01:39 I'd go and play to two people, to 20 people, to 40 people, to jazz nights, comedy nights, soul soul nights r&b nights rap nights and so by the time it came to touring I was I it was I was sort of this sort of well well-oiled machine that the first shows I was like well of course like I've I've been doing this I've just but what I hadn't been doing is playing to people that actually wanted to hear my music so suddenly suddenly you're filled with a crowd and I used to go on stage and have to convince people to listen to me and then suddenly i'm going on stage and people know my songs and it's you can't be nervous when you're going out if i went out to 80 000 people that had never heard my music yes i'd be nervous i'm going out
Starting point is 01:02:18 to 80 000 people that are fans like they want me to sing these songs so i walk out on stage and i go i and you can't once you've had a certain amount of hits you can't lose because even if i play one song and it doesn't really go well i'm like yeah well i'll play perfect now or i'll play thinking out loud now i'll play shape of you like there's there's songs that they're just the slam dunks that that you can't lose in a scenario where you're playing a stadium full of people that want to hear those songs so I'm not as nervous of like I was way more nervous I used to play I used to play like uh like rooms that were comedy nights and I'd be the only white guy in the room and I'd be playing music and it would be a comedy night and I would I would I would watch comedians bomb on stage before
Starting point is 01:03:01 me like bomb and then I'd have to go on stage and i remember i played this gig in uh los angeles and i was being roasted by the host as i was setting up being like who's this little ginger dude with his little guitar what's he gonna do and like all the crowd all the crowd are kind of roasting me too and then i have to stand up and then entertain this crowd but i think so i'm nervous there but then that also brings the best out of you because in my head i'm like i'm gonna show you what i can do and like now i think because i've had i've sort of earned my stripes if that makes sense like i can i think how many hits you've had it i think yeah and i think you're there i think you you know i think you just got there you know thank you thank you all right we're getting the big round and lovely to be a lovely person thanks die die
Starting point is 01:03:48 quick ask quick ask ed sheeran what you always ask me ask him for some ed sheeran merch or some cds oh no yes please yes please i wear all the t-shirts die i'll get you one of these i'll get you one of these. I would love one. Okay, Warner New Zealand, they're going to send you an equals hoodie, an equals t-shirt, and then do you have a vinyl player?
Starting point is 01:04:16 Yes. Yes, of course. That's my dad. I'll send you a vinyl. Yeah, I'll make sure we write that down. Oh, my God. Di, I think that means you passed the interview test. Honestly, Ed, you have no idea how much that means to her. That's so lovely of you.
Starting point is 01:04:33 That's so kind. Thank you so much. Thank you for your time. We appreciate you. We're excited about the new album. We love the new music. And thank you to our guest interviewer this evening as well. Thanks, Mark.
