Starting point is 00:00:00 The ZM Podcast Network. Play ZM's Fletch, Vaughn and Hayley. Gail, before we got you on, Vaughn and I took up the challenge of trying to hoon down a whole bun mee. A Vietnamese sandwich. Baguette. Ooh. We succeeded. Was it good?
Starting point is 00:00:19 Mine was pork, Hayley's was chicken. Ooh, that sounds good. I destroyed it. I destroyed it. Yum. No, honestly, I love that for you. And then that got us onto Chili's, which is why we said to you, we're talking about Chili's. We're talking Chili's. Okay, because I was thinking maybe
Starting point is 00:00:35 it was like a tongue twister, because I figured like, if you're... Okay, I'm going to switch to interview. I'm interviewing you now. If you are a radio host, do you do tongue twisters to warm up? Because you're speaking on the microphone, and I feel like enunciation is important. No, Vaughn rolls in with half a hangover most mornings
Starting point is 00:00:54 and then just cracks into it. I think it makes you relatable if you slur your sleaze law. If people don't understand what you're saying, it makes you more vague. Yeah. People want to be paying attention more. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And there's an element of mystery.
Starting point is 00:01:11 They're like, what is he saying? What word does he mean? Well, Gail, I actually, I went to grammar school, so I did do the tongue twisters. But, you know, we start work at like 5 a.m. in the morning. So we don't bother with that, that early on. It's brutal. Yeah, you're not
Starting point is 00:01:25 like seashells seashells what about sure i said it terribly what about let me um now pass me back control of the interview what about you what are you what is what is your warm-up like oh gosh okay i can tell you what i'm supposed to be doing okay tell us what you're supposed to be doing and then tell us what you actually do when i wake up in the morning i'm supposed to be doing. Tell us what you're supposed to be doing and then tell us what you actually do. When I wake up in the morning, I'm supposed to like warm up my breath. Cause like breath is like very important when you're singing because you need to like, it's interesting. Like I, I'm not aware of it now just because I've like practiced it for so long,
Starting point is 00:01:58 but like there's a very specific amount of air you let out when you're doing specific tones. Like if you're doing head voice, you need to be pushing more air compared to like more of like a mix it's like less air and so if you give too much you can crack and if you don't give enough you're flat we don't want crackage but we don't want crackage and so technically i'm supposed to go like or i'm supposed to go like oh those are good i'm supposed to do that when i wake up in the morning and i forget every single day every day it's getting the lungs on is it getting the lungs on board is that what we're doing here getting them i think so yeah i think it's that and then also just like warming up warming up the breath because when you're like going a head voice, you're giving out more air. So if you're just like shh, like in the practice of giving out more air.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Vaughn, I got to say, Gail, I used to coach singing. And this is landing with me, but Vaughn is very much not a singer. Give us a wee note, Vaughn. What? Give us a note. You know what? People say this, but I was an undefeated sing star. No one could beat me because it didn't sound any good,
Starting point is 00:03:07 but I knew exactly how to follow that little button up and down and hit the long notes. He's a very good pitch follower. So if we ever sing together, Vaughn can follow, and he'll just jump on. Yeah. He's very good at that. If people try to harmonize with me, it's impossible
Starting point is 00:03:19 because I just chase them, like pretty much sing star. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Actually, we're cornering you. This is actually a vocal lesson. I don't know if you knew. It's not bad. Gail,
Starting point is 00:03:32 let's talk about your new album. It's called a study of the human experience. Volume one. Is that suggesting there might be a volume two? My maybe possibly, maybe possibly. Maybe, maybe,
Starting point is 00:03:44 maybe there might be something in the works. Possibly. This is like, I know that you chuck this word around a lot, highly anticipated, but it is because you came out and you're like, hi, I'm Gail. Here's my song. A, B, C, D, E, F, U. And it is, it's just the biggest song in the world. Oh my gosh.
Starting point is 00:04:03 It's the biggest song in the world oh my gosh i it's the biggest song in the world i can't i'm not gonna disagree with you because you said it i can't acknowledge that because i feel like i'm lying to people or i feel like an egotistical prick if i'm like my song my song, it is. I mean, honestly, the song has had 519 million plays on Spotify. That's just Spotify. I mean, that's absolutely insane. How does it feel for you that you wrote the song, you put it out there and it's just had this insane reaction? Yeah. I mean, I think it's also really funny. I wrote the song with my Best Friend and then a really good friend of ours, Dave Pittenger. And it was like such like I would say isn't particularly like we weren't sitting here being like, this is the peak of music.
Starting point is 00:04:53 This is the best thing we've ever done. It was just like it was like a really funny song we wrote to trash my ex-boyfriend. Like I just walked in and like Sarah and I like Sarah no she's like she's used to me having low standards and having bad taste like she been new but like we broke up and then I realized I was like oh he treated me badly the whole time and she's like duh and I was like oh okay cool cool cool so then we walk in and then I was finally like ready to be angry and then we like wrote the song and I from when I wrote it to when I released it there was like a year gap so like it was on my phone for a year like I was just like listening to it every once when I was
Starting point is 00:05:35 bored I'd be like oh you know what I'm I haven't thought about that song in a minute I'm gonna listen to it and like it was it was the song is not innocent but like the intentions behind writing the song yeah having it was very just like playful is not innocent but like the intentions behind writing the song yeah having it was very just like playful and fun and innocent and just like yeah like well we just read this song imagine being your ex maybe it's me like you know the gail song a b c d e f u the u is me she's talking about me and my mom. Yeah. That's the thing. Is this person out there being like, oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:06:09 Because if you think about the famous songs like Carly Simon's You're So Vain and Alanis Morissette's You Ought to Know, no one knows who they're about. You know, like they're these angry songs that an ex, but no one knows who they were written about. But you've said you're boyfriend, so people could research and find out or? No, it'd be pretty hard to find out. And I'd prefer for people to try their best to not,
Starting point is 00:06:33 just to have the self-control. Just enjoy the song. Yeah, because it's also more of like, he deserved that song getting written about him, 100%. But he does not deserve people finding out about him like that that that like i get it like i literally pretended to film a music video in his house and trashed it like i there's some lines that were crossed but i'm trying to have some type of boundary some sort you know there's got to be a point totally how old are you now because it says 17
Starting point is 00:07:05 and and the press stuff but are you are you nearly 18 or i'm nearly i mean i turned 18 in june so it's coming up it's coming up soon so this song came out you were 17 you had on your phone for a year so you wrote it as a 16 this is a romance that you had as a 15 year old yep wow okay see this is all new for vaughn because vaughn uh was didn't have any luck when he was a teenager in relationships no so to feel this kind of pain and angst and love it's new to you it is it is yeah I feel like when you're little like especially like the age of like 15 too it's like one I don't know how red flags played out like if there's beginning of a talking stage and like there's red flags I didn't know how that like played out like if there's beginning of a talking stage and like
Starting point is 00:07:45 there's red flags I didn't know how that like plays out over the span of like 10 months how like you're like oh that's just like toxic and not good for my mental health like that makes me not like myself yeah you know but like I didn't know like I didn't know that or even with relationships like I didn't know how intense falling in love with somebody is but I didn't know like i didn't know that or even with relationships like i didn't know how intense falling in love with somebody is but i didn't know that you could like think you're in love with somebody but you're not actually in love with somebody you're in love with the idea of somebody yeah i didn't know that i didn't know that you could like make somebody up in your head like they are the person you're like dating but then they're just like a little bit not like
Starting point is 00:08:23 i was gonna say you just incredibly wise for a 17 year old most people are in like their late 20s or mid 30s before they're like okay that wasn't good i can see now a pattern developing well i think also like i don't know my parents got divorced at a young age and so and also like, I had a stepdad at one point, and they also got divorced. And so I from very young age saw unhealthy relationship dynamics. And I think because of that, it also made me look at my, like, once I had a few unhealthy relationships and saw how they didn't work out. I was oh i saw something bad so i recreated something bad okay it is very strange how we do that to ourselves why do we do it's crazy it is a
Starting point is 00:09:15 bit of human nature it's a human nature a little bit of human nature yeah because that's what you know and what you know is what's comfortable like for me when people treat me well it's uncomfortable because i don't know i don't know that that's like weird all this and what if i like it too much i'll miss it when it's gone all this deep all this deep wise thinking from you gail i want to know what's what's the vibe of the of the the rest of the album oh the vibe is like okay so like even with the first cp of volume one there might maybe possibly Volume 2, but like, for me, the first one, there's a lot of like, you did this. Like, even like, you don't want to be friends, you're just horny, or like, F you. I'm so love-starred, but I'm knowing if I'm ready to trust you, you know?
Starting point is 00:10:00 And like, I think the second EP, I'm still working on it. Like, I have enough songs for it it's just kind of knowing like the story I'm trying to tell after the beginning of what I just did um but it's more of like me like just more of like my hopefully it's gonna be talking more of like my look on like my relationship with sex and then my relationship with religion and my relationship like with some more of like my exes and like my perspective on the world and like more deeper into like why i do all the things i do or like why i get into the things that i get myself into i'm gonna say i already i don't want to blow smoke up your ass but i already said you you i don't know
Starting point is 00:10:43 if that's a saying in any other part of the world apart from New Zealand. It is. It is. Okay, okay. Sometimes we've got weird sayings in New Zealand and we say them and people are horrified at them. So blowing smoke up your ass, I just wanted to confirm that.
Starting point is 00:10:54 No, no, but I did say you've got the biggest song in the world. And now I'm going to say you're the voice of a generation. Yeah, so wise. So wise. Thank you. Thank you. I appreciate it. I've got two daughters um so we started out listening to the censored version and then they told me they heard the uncensored version on tiktok
Starting point is 00:11:11 and from here on out that is the only version we will listen to in the car which we're okay with which we're very much okay with um but one one of my daughters had a question what kind of dog do you think her ex-boyfriend had because you say everybody can get fucked um apart from the dog and so we're now we're like we've had many discussions yeah is it like a cute golden retriever is it a rescue dog that's got a you know a heart of gold but had a rough start can we know the dog what what breed of dog was it the dog was a shiaboo and her name was kayla and she was the sweetest little thing and she was so tiny like she was just a tiny little gal
Starting point is 00:11:48 and it makes me very sad let's steal her let's steal her I was just going to say let's do this we're going to come over we're going to help steal the dog we're going to be
Starting point is 00:11:56 we're going to be touching down in approximately 15 hours we're going to meet you you're going to pick us up at the airport we're going to go and steal the shit great we're going to meet up we're going to
Starting point is 00:12:02 we're going to go outside of his house and we're going to comment in Japan yeah yeah yeah I don't get all the content oh my god you have to stay in the car he'll recognize you Okay. We're going to meet up. We're going to, we're going to go outside of his house. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I don't get all the content. Oh my God. He'll recognize you. I think,
Starting point is 00:12:10 I think he might. Here's the thing though. I won blocks on everything like a year ago, but we didn't date when I had the split dye and I had short hair. So he wouldn't even recognize you. And I didn't even have like and I didn't even have like I had I have like a loop now I had a stud piercing and I had no tattoo Gail Gail Gail maybe I have a disguise Gail I don't want to um spring this on you but you're quite a big deal I think he might
Starting point is 00:12:37 have looked at what you look like now he might have seen he might have seen a music video or something or or someone might have been like is this gail that you used to go out with and he would have been like okay you should get along with him now well so here's the thing though like i feel like yeah maybe he's heard this i don't know i don't know but the one thing is is i blocked him on tiktok so i don't know if you can and the thing this is bad logic but i don't know if he could hear my TikTok audio if I blocked it. We need to figure this out. What is this TikTok like if you're completely gone from it, even sounds? But the thing is, is like other people made their own sounds of ABC.
Starting point is 00:13:24 But then I don't know if you like click the sound, if it doesn't say my name or anything, would he know? I didn't block his dad on Instagram, though. That was the one thing I did. I hate his dad. I hate his dad more than I hate his mom and his sister. It just sounded better to say his mom and his sister. But I didn't block his dad because I knew he knew how much I hated his dad. And so it was so petty. So I knew that he'd be pissed if i fucking blocked him on everything but not his dad
Starting point is 00:13:47 so you can still wear that i have yet i need to check up on his instagram i need to see how that dude's doing i'm gonna i'm gonna yeah we need to do a little update uh gail we're out of time but i'm so excited to hear new music with you hoping one day you get to come over to new zealand and perform for us yes yes yes yes i would love that that'd be amazing my last question is purely visual is that a window behind you or is it like a screen it's it's my hotel i was like no i like how i casually have a bag of doritos yeah are they the cool ranch doritos they are the cool ranch we don't get them anymore we don't get them in new zealand anymore we only had them like for a little bit and we don't give it the cool ranch but we're gonna go over and help gail when we
Starting point is 00:14:26 go to steal the dog i'll give you doritos right away send me an updated list of all the chips and candies that are not in new zealand but my possibility here i will have a basket waiting for you gail thank you so much for chatting to us i can't wait to uh come over there and steal this dog with you. You can steal this dog. Yes, I'm very excited for us. Imagine his dog goes missing. We'd be kind of in trouble.
Starting point is 00:14:51 I am. It was in my mind. I'm like, oh, Jesus, if this dog goes missing, there is a documented case of us incriminating ourselves. We're going to be in trouble. Only if they catch us. And they'll never catch us. They never will. Because we're an international dog napping ring.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Exactly. We've done this catch us. Because we're an international dog napping ring. Exactly. We've done this multiple times. Any dog that's ever been on Missing, it's been us. Gail, thanks so much.
