Well, if you haven't heard of her because of TikTok,
I don't know if you've heard of that platform, TikTok,
but lots of artists try to make it, try to break through,
and very few of them do.
But if you haven't heard of her from TikTok,
you would have heard of her now as the opening act for Ed Sheeran.
Maisie Peters, welcome.
Thank you very much. Hello.
Hello. Now, can I just say, we saw Ed last week?
Yeah, in Wellington.
In Wellington.
And I was so blown away by you, not only because you're an incredible talent and I thought
your set was amazing, but how you handled the situation of Wellington.
That was a tricky one.
So for people that don't know, weren't there, 48,000 people were, some sound issues.
There were some technical issues.
At one point you were like this and no sound was coming.
Oh, that's good.
My God, I was just watching you going, what a professional.
You were just, you didn't stop.
You kept going.
You kept entertaining us.
I couldn't even hear you.
I would have had a tanty and yelled at someone.
Did you scream at someone?
No, I didn't.
I was just sort of merrily laughing, to be fair.
It's all fun and games at the end of the day.
I was having a good time.
I love, though, when you came because you kept having to leave the stage
and they were trying to sort it out.
Obviously, there was some stress under the stage.
Oh, you have no idea.
And then you would come up and be like, I'm so sorry.
I was like, Maisie, it's not your fault.
That's true.
I was trying to be like, it's not you, it's me,
but it's not even me, really. It's That's true. I was trying to be like, it's not you. It's me. But it's not even me, really.
Like, it's sort of a, it's a wider issue.
Yeah.
But you know what was funny?
So everyone was so nice.
I was saying about Wellington.
I was, after the Edge show the next day, I was just exploring.
And I was on Cuba Street where there's a lot of things.
No, no.
I'm from Wellington.
I kept bumping.
Okay.
So I kept bumping into a lot of people.
And they were so sweet and friendly.
And everyone was just like, you were great.
Like, was really sorry about all the issues.
And I was like, it's not your fault.
We're sorry.
It's not my fault.
Whose fault is it?
Who knows?
Are they sorry?
But then there was one woman and she was so iconic.
And we all, she's become like a holy savior.
And there was this one woman and we bumped into her.
And she was like, hey, you know, I saw you last night.
She was like, oh, like, you seemed really great.
We're really sorry about your sound issues.
Like, we were just like this the whole day.
And then demonstrated like putting her fingers into her ears and i was like
ah i was like oh i'm sorry about that oh okay she's like no it's not your fault you know it
was just like this i was like oh cool and then she goes and she goes and all my friends are there
we're all just watching like this is amazing and she's like yeah but you know like i you know i
looked you up after that and i'm thinking like i'm sure lots of people felt really sorry for you and looked you up.
And you'll probably, you know, you might get like a New Zealand fan base from that.
And I was like, yeah, you're right.
Like a pity fan base.
I would like a pity fan base.
And then that was the end of our conversation.
And we were like, she is an icon.
So whoever she is in Wellington, I hope she knows she's an icon.
An icon.
Well, most Wellingtonians are.
Wellingtonians are very proud of coming from Wellington.
It's the coolest city.
What did you think of the bucket fountain when you were on Cuba?
Did you like that?
Okay, I'm not going to lie.
It was really hyped up to me and it was a little bit underwhelming.
Oh my God, guys, you can't say that about the fountain.
I don't know if you can say that.
But I mean, like, it was really nice still.
But did you get the big buckets at the bottom?
Because they really surprise you and have a lot of water in them.
I can feel your tone.
I love the big buckets and the small buckets.
You know what?
I'm saying a lot of things right now because I'm saying all of this.
And I did go back to the bucket fountain like three times.
Oh, wow.
You know what?
I'm sure it captured me in ways I can't even express or understand.
But did you go back three times because you're like,
no, they did say it was good. and I haven't seen the good yet,
so I'm going to give it another chance.
Or did I just go back because the street is like not that long,
so I just sort of ended up back there, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But all of those reasons, it could be any of them.
Now, you spoke about having to go off stage
and go underneath the stage,
and people in Wellington would have seen the incredible set-up
that Ed Sheeran has.
It's a circular stage in the middle of the field.
It rotates.
It goes up and down.
What's underneath there?
Oh, I can't tell you.
It's a secret.
Oh, my God.
I knew it was going to be a secret.
It's really wild, though.
Is it?
Is it like a...
There's moving parts.
Is there very much like, don't put your fingers in there?
Yeah, sort of circus vibes.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Behind the scenes dangers. Like lions, monkeys kind of fingers in there. Yeah, sort of circus vibes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Behind the scenes dangers.
Like lions, monkeys kind of things.
Can we take a step back?
Because I don't know if this is, maybe this is insulting,
but I feel like.
I love that as an insult to a sentence.
Maybe this is insulting, but.
No, but I feel like, you know, on TikTok,
it's such an incredible platform at the moment.
And a lot of people are putting out a lot of stuff.
And I'm always like you know like there's such quick access to an audience that sort of a lot of faff can come
through and then that's the insult okay are we getting there now is this a better or worse than
the woman who put her fingers on her ears watching you come from that platform to seeing you live,
I was just like, you're the real deal.
I feel like there's a lot of, you know,
like sometimes people can kind of fake it on TikTok
or, you know, use this sort of,
but you can really freaking sing.
Thank you.
I appreciate that.
Like, so amazingly.
How does it feel now that you're like-
Not according to the woman in Wellington.
That's the thing.
I didn't know because I think-
The one woman. How do you feel like coming from, mean because you started busking then you moved on to online
now you're playing to like tens of thousands of people around the world with one of the biggest
stars in the world Ed Sheeran how do you feel are you shocked are you in a whirlwind or are you like
yes this feels right because I'm extremely talented um I think that I like to just sort of
not think too much because you just sort of take each I think that I like to just sort of not think too much
because you just sort of take each day as it comes
and you just sort of try your best and, yeah,
do as best as I can with the amazing opportunities that I'm achieving,
that I'm receiving.
But it is really crazy for sure.
Like if you ever take a step and really think about it,
I'm sure I would like spiral into all sorts of places. no then I that's the thing I just don't I just simply
repress and move forward yeah um but no it's no it's amazing and I'm yeah I'm very grateful I'm
very lucky to do what I do and get to like travel the world and and see all these places and and
play to all these people it's really cool because one thing I love about your music is the storytelling
elements of it it's not not just sort of about nothing.
It's these kind of wild stories.
Are they all true, like from you?
Did you fall in love with your best friend's brother?
Yes, well, a lot of them are true.
That song, Kate's Brother, there's some fiction and there's some truth in it.
It's really up to the listener what they want to choose as fiction or truth.
But Kate's Brother is real. And Kate's one one of my best friends we live together in london
what does kate's brother make of that song uh kate's brother obviously obviously really loved
the song i mean it's it's a smash so why would he not like the song you know i would i would
personally love it if someone wrote a song like that about me hell yeah and it's so like it's i
love that you've you've got so much like pop and you want to sing along
to it but also you've got such a rock and roll edge like i mean you're playing the guitar
the whole time you're like a cool rock chick thank you so much i appreciate it and actually
funny story about that is that so kate's brother the real life person uh actually um so obviously
he lives in canada but uh for the ed shows in wemble Wembley in London we were all obviously friends
and I texted our group chat
with me and Kate
and Kate's brother
and then my friend Tessa
who's in a band
called Tommy LaFroy
who's also in the song
and I was like
Kate's brother
if you get to London
I will get you tickets
to this Edge Sheeran Wembley show
and you can come and hear
Kate's brother sang
in Wembley
and he came
and he did stand there
and he did watch
Kate's brother the song
being sang live
in Wembley Stadium in Wembley song being sang live in Wembley Stadium.
In Wembley Stadium.
Was that just insane, Wembley Stadium?
It was so crazy.
And we did like five nights there.
So I was sort of a – it was a Wembley residency for like a week and a half.
And it was so fun.
It was like so crazy.
It was the best time.
I mean, Eden Park though, also a great venue.
That's you tonight.
I've heard about Eden Park a lot.
All my Kiwi friends are like, this is the biggest thing ever.
And they're like, it's so funny that you're playing it.
They're like, you should not be allowed to play in Eden Park.
Why are you surrounded by people constantly bringing you down?
It's so true.
I think it's the level of the playing field.
I think it is.
That is a very Kiwi thing to do.
The only risk I reckon you have tonight Is maybe sinking through the ground
Eden Park was maybe just over a week ago
Under water
They've got a great drainage system
Yeah we've heard a lot about this drainage system
You know what there's one thing I love is a drainage system
I love a drainage system
Can I ask you with the rotating stage
A lot of people have seen it now
It's not a spoiler is it
Well you've done it now
I'm going to get fired
Do you get dizzy? Because I was watching you the whole time running around it It's not a spoiler, is it? The rotating stage. Well, you've done it now. Oh, God. I'm going to get fired.
Oh, my God.
Do you get dizzy?
Because I was watching you the whole time running around it and watching Ed on it and stuff.
And I was like, I would have to jump off and take five.
Well, when I'm on stage, the stage isn't rotating.
Oh, it doesn't rotate. I just move at lightning speed.
Okay.
Because I genuinely thought you were rotating because it was like, nope, that's just my little legs.
They're running so fast, like a little hamster
No, head stage is rotating and we have
been on that stage once or twice
after hours and someone's put it on rotate
and everyone's there with their beers like woo
and it's been a great
time but no, I do not rotate
You do not rotate. I just scamper
Manual rotate. Final
question, I know I'm hounding you, I'm just
a very big and new fan of yours.
Thank you.
What's next?
You've got all these amazing bangers out.
You're traveling the world.
New album.
Everyone's going to know your name.
What's the plan, Stan?
Well, I'm on tour with Ed.
We're going to Australia next after these shows.
Yes.
And then I'm doing some shows in Australia
and then I'm doing some shows in Asia.
And then I do have another album coming out this year year so i can't tell you when but it is
this year and it is um vaguely soon sooner rather than later some would say i'm loving watching this
tiptoeing yeah information you can't tell the thing is is i have such a huge huge huge mouth
and i would tell you everything and i i'm very conscious when i'm doing all these um interviews
to be like don't you know that meme of
kind of like the cloak
being like don't
that's how I feel
me to me
so more music
and hopefully some more touring
we get to see you again
chat to you again
and follow you along
on this amazing journey
I would love that
I'm very keen to come back
so hopefully
well they won't want you
back in Wellington
after what you said
about the fountain
you've absolutely
dissed the fountain
guys
I didn't diss the fountain
I had to be honest I assume like all interviews are sort of like the you know the
justice system where you have to tell the truth yeah um so i just i had to tell the truth yeah
on behalf of wellington we're quite upset with you maisie but i hate this narrative i want no
part in this narrative i want to i want to take it all back and say I love the bucket fountain I love the
bucket fountain well maybe you could call the new album bucket fountain that's an idea songs from a
bucket I love ideas and keep having them my friend just an idea you keep that one and you really
really can pocket that that's just for you Wellington's upset but the um Macy Peters pity
party yeah we're stoked you're back thank you so much thank you so much
it runs on pure pity alone
yeah yeah
there's no respect for talent
no no
we're just really sorry for you
it's just pure pity
that's what I love
it doesn't matter
