Starting point is 00:00:00 The ZM Podcast Network. Fleshwood and Hayley's Little Bit of Pod. Download the MyMaccas app and use your points towards a coffee. Welcome to A Little Bit of Pod. Late night for me last night because you know I love an early night. You do love an early night and you messaged me a little bit late and you also messaged me a very interesting piece of trivia. Yes. Famous
Starting point is 00:00:26 well, for our history appreciating cricket umpire bondage dominatrix following historians listening to the show. I understand that's quite a niche. Yes. Although you love true crime. I'm surprised you don't
Starting point is 00:00:42 know about this. I can't believe I don't. Infamous crime. So I last night don't know about this. I can't believe I don't. Infamous crime. So I, last night, hosted, we had a building, we had a quiz night for our building. That's cute. And they invited, like, one of the neighbouring buildings, because I think they needed another table. Oh. They did very well, the neighbouring building. But floor four won.
Starting point is 00:01:00 Yes. Although I wasn't in the quiz, I was the quiz master. So. With my experience and knowledge and, you know, obviously experience of hosting many a quiz through work. Yeah. I was the quiz master. Right. Yeah. So how did you not tell us about this?
Starting point is 00:01:16 I think I forgot. And also I'd forgotten that I was even doing it. And then I was like, oh, it's on tonight. And then I was like, okay. So what did you do? Give us a little example. Well, they'd got a quiz from one of the pub company company quiz you know the people that do the quizzes and yeah do it believe it or not or whatever yeah pubs buy them and so they bought one and so i just got the answers and
Starting point is 00:01:34 the questions and read them out and stood at the front and easy it was it was quite it was actually quite cute but when you when you live in the central city and you live downtown there's no real like community vibe like there is say you know like with the RSA where you used to live in. Yeah yeah yeah. You'd have local pubs and that kind of thing. Yeah totally. Whereas downtown it's kind of it's more transient. There is a weird yeah lack
Starting point is 00:01:58 of sort of a community of sorts. Yeah and so everyone in the community it was actually so cute. So do you would you have known many of these people? Like 100%. Like see them in the building all the time over the years. Yeah, and you have a few meetings about collective issues and whatnot. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:02:14 So yeah, but it was fun. Wow. It was really cute. So you weren't allowed to partake? No, I was asking the questions. You were hosting. It was quite hard. There were some hard ones.
Starting point is 00:02:25 Some very the questions. You were hosting. It was quite hard. There were some hard ones. Yeah. Some very hard questions. But there was a round that was specifically about your area. Yeah, they did like a local history round. I love that. And it was actually fascinating
Starting point is 00:02:33 because where I live used to be like the seaside. It used to be the shoreline in Auckland. Way back. Before they reclaimed it all. Before they reclaimed it.
Starting point is 00:02:41 Yeah, so once I lived on beachfront property. Wow. You're glad you don't now. Your house would have it. Yeah, so once I lived on beachfront property. Wow. You're glad you don't now. Your house would have been such a weird house to have on the beachfront. Yeah. 100%. An apartment tower on the beach.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Which is not coastal. No. So Fletch sends me a photo of one of the questions with a circle because he knows I appreciate this, as I will bounce back to now, a historic New Zealand crime involving a high-end cricket umpire and a dominatrix. The House of Dominance was where infamous dominatrix
Starting point is 00:03:10 Renee Chignall learnt her trade. One of her clients, Peter Plumley Walker, more well-known as a cricket umpire, was found dead at Hooker Falls after a bondage session. What was the most likely cause of death?
Starting point is 00:03:21 I did chuckle when I read that question. I thought, well, this is quite a lot. But also, it's very interesting that that is so close to your house. Way back in the day, like my area of town, like Auckland's Fort Street and around there, it was like red light district. Yeah, yeah, of course. Along with like K Road and stuff. But I had never heard the story.
Starting point is 00:03:39 A lot of warehouses and there was the old Chinese markets were where like Lee's Mills is now. I remember that in the 90s and a lot of factories like the building i live in used to be a factory like built in 1910 and stuff fascinating area so then we i i had one of my um joyous moments is filling in a new zealander on the story of peter plumley walker who was a cricket umpire a well-respected like older gentleman with a big moustache it would be like seeing like a famous rugby or cricket umpire
Starting point is 00:04:09 now like in the news because they fished his body out of the Hooker Falls so in 1989 what a moustache in 1989
Starting point is 00:04:16 they found his body floating in the Hooker Falls yeah and he was bound and gagged no no not gagged bound at the wrist and the feet
Starting point is 00:04:24 yeah and then the murder then the investigation begun. What was this, the 90s? 1989 was when his body was found. Right. Beautiful, yeah. I believe, I Googled, I couldn't find much about this. I know he had a wife.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Right. But I don't know much about the rest of the family. But then that shouldn't reflect on them that he was into it. So he hired this dominatrix. Who used to work near my house. Near your house. I didn't know this. Fascinating.
Starting point is 00:04:48 There used to be a lot of brothels around that area. Well, the working area is often working, drinking, and sex. Those are the three of the Holy Trinity, like the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, working, drinking, sex. So the brothels and the dominatrix and stuff were around there. She goes around to his house in Remuera and begins tying him up
Starting point is 00:05:06 and then pops out for a ciggy while he's all tied up because, you know, that's the thing. You wait for me. Yeah, yeah, beg for me. Dirty little bitch or whatever. I don't know. I've never been donned. Is that what you say?
Starting point is 00:05:15 I assume so. You doodle little bitch. Wait for me, doodle little bitch. And when she comes back in with her then boyfriend, the dude's like not breathing and he's blue. Goodness. And she's like, oh, my God. So from- Out. Out. That she's like, oh my God. So from-
Starting point is 00:05:25 Out. Out. That's well out. Sex and out. That's a cricket umpire reference. And so they drove him all the way to Hooker Falls and then just hoof because they were like, oh, they'll never find the body. It'll get washed away.
Starting point is 00:05:37 So they didn't kill him. He died of a misadventure. It's a sexual misadventure. Sexual misadventure. But then why not just get on the phone and be like, hey- She said her biggest regret you should read up on it it's a fascinating
Starting point is 00:05:48 she's written a book there was like a Sunday night theatre did you know that it was a Sunday night theatre I'd watch this Mercy Mistress Mercy
Starting point is 00:05:54 I think it was called I looked it up just before during the show when I should have been concentrating on Taylor Swift stuff I was learning more and more about it and she wrote a book
Starting point is 00:06:02 and she said her biggest single biggest regret in her life was not calling the police at that stage because what she was doing was not illegal. It was illegal. It wasn't because they hadn't had sex. Oh, right.
Starting point is 00:06:16 He'd just been tied up. Now, they could have got off on it on the fact that he was just tied up and it's not illegal to tie people up. And they were role-playing and doing that. And something went wrong. Because you forget that we decriminalized prostitution in New Zealand years ago. And you forget that in other places around the world, it's still illegal, which blows my mind. Oh my gosh.
Starting point is 00:06:37 One of the world's oldest professions. I suppose you just panicked. Yeah, exactly. You know those things you do in the heat of the moment, but that's a long drive. You know those things you do in the heat of the moment, but that's a long drive. You know those things you do in the heat of the moment? Oh, yeah, man. Chucking bodies off of cliffs. I'm not saying Chuck Gagai off the Hooker Falls,
Starting point is 00:06:53 which if you're one of our international listeners, look it up because the water hums. You wouldn't be able to jump in there and survive. No, no, no. I don't even think it's recommended to go over it in a stunt manner. The odd lunatic goes over on a kayak sometimes. And there's been many people who have died doing it because it's unpredictable and it changes.
Starting point is 00:07:11 So did they face charges for this? She did. She went to prison. She spent two years in prison. For disposing of the body. I believe so, until it got chucked out in court because they didn't actually kill him. He died of the thing.
Starting point is 00:07:24 So, yeah, she did spend two years in prison. Man. What a wild story. Oh yeah, look, there's the bridge. Because I always remember those names from the news growing up as a kid, like being young and just hearing those names on the news, but that's not really knowing too much about it. I was seven when it happened. I remember it happening. I remember because
Starting point is 00:07:40 I think it happened over summer and I was at my grandparents and bless them, they loved watching the news, but they weren't like, like something like that would come on. They wouldn't mute it. They'd listen to it all. And then we'd just look at our granddad and be like, what's that? And he'd be like, well.
Starting point is 00:07:54 What's a dominatrix? What's a dominatrix? How did he die? Why did they tie him up and throw him in there? Far out. Which is weird because it's exactly what my kids do now when we're watching the news. They're like, what's that?
Starting point is 00:08:04 You're like, I don't know Here we go You do your best To explain it to them Because they're your children And you've got to Yeah well there you go If you love podcasts
Starting point is 00:08:10 And true crime There's a podcast episode Of it Yeah Is there what There is Radio New Zealand State Broadcaster
Starting point is 00:08:17 Oh yes I just saw that Although They have tilted it Russian So watch out there He was Ukrainian I don't know I don't know No I don't think But that would be A fascinating They have tilted it Russian. So watch out there. He was Ukrainian? I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:08:28 No, I don't think it. But that would be fascinating. It was so wild because he was like this straight cut cricket umpire. Very proper. Yes. And it turned out he was into real kinky stuff. Which we're not at a kink show. No, it's not. It's the most you least expect.
Starting point is 00:08:41 It really is. It's like Vaughn who loves being called a kinky little bitch. Dirty little bitch. Wait for me, dirty little bitch. Okay, doctor. Just one you least expect. It really is. Like Vaughn, who loves being called a kinky little bitch. Yeah. Dirty little bitch. Wait for me, you dirty little bitch. Okay, doctor, just when you're ready. It is called a waiting room. I was expecting to do that. Oh, right, okay.
Starting point is 00:08:53 That's why my doctor, she's like, ah, and Stevenson. Oh, Smith's here. You wait for me, you dirty little bitch. It's just a very unprofessional way your doctor to talk to you, but I will wait.
