Fleshborn and Hayley's Little Bit of Pond
Great things are brewing at McCafe
The perfect start to every day
Welcome to A Little Bit of Pond
Now, recently it was my daughter's cross-country day
This is a nice way to tell a funny story
But also brag that they both came second in the year
That's pretty good
Do they race in the same race or differently?
No, different races
Oh yeah
Because they're different years
How many, because I just
Thinking back to primary school
It seemed like it was, I don't know
400 kilometres
How many, how long is the actual race?
I don't know
Couple of k's maybe?
Yeah
Always felt forever
It did
But also, we went across country
We ran through paddocks and stuff
They just ran around the local domain.
I had issues with them calling it a cross country.
No, that's just a run.
Or a park jog.
That's a park jog.
They should call it the annual school park jog.
We were in Eastbourne.
We used to run up the bush, like the back bush track, like Butterfly Creek and stuff.
We went full bush.
Right.
I remember sometimes with PE, we'd have to run around Pukikuta Park in New Plymouth.
Right.
That's a big park.
That's got so many entrances that you could just cut right through
and go straight back to school.
Stop at the dairy.
Yeah.
Get some lollies.
Yeah.
Look at the ducks.
Cute.
Eat your dolomites and look at the ducks.
Well, that was what I was very much there.
Just keep running.
Don't stop.
I've said it to them before.
I've watched enough years to know you don't need to sprint to win.
You just need to not stop running.
It's a turtle in a hair.
Yeah.
Classic turtle in the hair story.
Yeah.
That's not right, is it?
Tortoise in the hair?
Tortoise in the hair?
Tortoise in the hair.
Rabbit in the turtle.
No, it's the tortoise in the hair.
Tortoise in the hair, not the turtle.
Yeah.
It's a hair.
Yeah, I know it's a hair.
Yeah.
Well, it's not going to be the rabbit in the hair.
Those are just two rabbits.
Two variants of the same creature.
So they both come second, but then initially Indy thought she'd come third
because she was told she'd come third.
Oh, yeah.
She's like, I thought it was second, but they're telling me third.
Sore loser.
Then we were like, sweet.
She can't take bad news.
She can't take it.
I know that.
Bullshit.
We're second.
So then we're like, sweet, go back to school.
They spend the last half of the day at school.
Go pick her up.
She's like, I actually came second.
I was like, well, so what happened?
And so the course, because I said park jog, oh, there's been a doping elimination.
Oh, yeah, man.
That's right.
That's what it'll be.
Quarter in the bush.
Putting in there.
Year eights are juicy.
Putting a needle in.
They're juicing
to win cross country
so it kind of
wove around on itself
this path
and the
track they ran
and at one stage
it kind of came close
to the finish line
and then went
way away again
it turns out
the girl that
the teachers were like
wow she came first
was coming dead last
and just got to that point
and was like
I don't see the point
of running all that way
I'm just going to cut across
shortcut
and she shortcut short beg your pardon shortcut shortcut it and just got to that point and was like, I don't see the point in running all that way. I'm just going to cut across. Short cut. And she short cut it and ran through the finish line.
And the teachers are like, wow, first.
And then apparently this girl didn't know how to tell them.
She was just like, no, I had enough.
So she was like, yep.
She was getting the adulation.
She's like, well, I can't say no.
How did she get exposed?
She loved it.
Well, later on someone said, oh, but she can't come first
because she just kind of gave up and cut across.
And that was when they were all like, yeah.
So was she disqualified?
Yeah.
She fucking cheated.
She literally cut out like two thirds of the cross country course.
You can't be mean to kids anymore.
I'm surprised they didn't just let her have it.
Let her have it.
Ingenuity.
Yeah.
Do you know, I think I might
have done something like this as a kid I have a vague memory of doing a triathlon oh yeah you'd
swim at the pool and run or maybe it was just a bike race but I remember being on my purple bike
from the warehouse and I remember coming third in the bike part of this thing right and me being
like how did that happen and then people
talking about it later about this bit that i definitely hadn't done and i feel because we
would bike around eastbourne because it's just like a small little town and i i remember being
like i don't think i did all of that yeah but i don't i just think i didn't mention it where it
looped around on itself and like a figure eight you were like oh i see them going that way so you
just turned and you wanted to do the teardrop at the bottom of the eight yeah i think so something
like that and i have a memory of being like. Yeah, I think so. Something like that.
And I have a memory of being like, and I think I just never told anyone that I didn't pass
Jamie's dad, who was at the point that turned you around or something.
I was like, I didn't see Colin.
I don't know.
Third.
I guess when you're going this fast, you don't see everything.
I was just got my blinkers on and concentrating.
What does she win for coming second?
Well, both the girls.
I don't know.
Then they get to go.
There was talk about going to zones,
but then they were both like,
we don't want to do that.
I was like, yeah, fair enough.
That's where you go and race against.
You know, when you're at,
my primary school was small.
If you were good at something at my primary school,
you'd be like,
maybe I'm the best in the world at this.
Yeah.
There's seven kids I compete against.
Maybe I'm the best in the world.
And then you'd go to like Morrisville, which was very small, like regionals,
and you'd just get fucking plastered.
And it was so bad for your self-esteem because when you believed you could have
been the best in the world, you were on cloud nine.
Yeah.
When you found out you weren't even like in the top 50 in Morrisville,
kicking the balls.
Yeah.
So they were like, oh, we don't go to this.
I'm like, absolutely fine.
Don't.
Ride the high. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, go, I'm going, absolutely fine. Ride the high.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, well, we're proud of them.
Pass on our congratulations.
Oh, thank you.
Fletch, would you like me to pass on?
I said ow.
I said on behalf of Fletch as well.
It doesn't matter, does it?
No, they will keep this on their CV
until they enter the workforce.
Until they're at least 22.
Second, primary school, cross country.
Cross country.
Came second.
Actually, it was announced as third,
but what happened was this girl cheated.
This cheater-cheater.
In a doping scandal way back in the day.
I mean, she is the Lance Armstrong of this.
They all, you know, held her up as some sort of hero,
and it turns out she just didn't do most of the track.
