Welcome to A Little Bit of Pod.
Yesterday in a meeting, attention turned to next year, 2024.
Well, Jared asked, he said, I need a couple of days off at the end of February.
I might take the 29th and the 30th.
And I laughed.
Yep.
Not realising next year's a leap year and just Jared assuming there was a 30 end of February, I might take the 29th and the 30th. And I laughed. Yep. Not realising next year's
a leap year
and just Jared assuming
there was a 30th of February
ever.
Oh yeah, right.
And then we established
it is a leap year next year.
Yes.
Also the way...
It's my friend's birthday.
He's a leap year baby.
Oh, that's so cool.
Yeah, he's 50 something
but really he's like 30.
Does he go around
and say,
I'm 12.
Yeah, happy 12th birthday.
On his 50th birthday, I think we had a 12th birthday.
Also, do you find the way producer Jared asks for days off is always mysterious?
Yeah, he never says.
He's in a hushed tone.
He's always like, oh, by the way, I need this off.
And then that's it.
Whereas you, Hayley, will say, I've got this wedding.
I need to take Friday off.
He goes, Would it be okay
If
I had the 30th of February off
I'm thinking
We should have said
You know what
30th of February
Take the 30th off
No problem
Yeah
And then on the first
Being like
Dude where are you
The show's falling apart
And he's like
I took the day off
And you're like
No you took the 30th off
You took the non-existent 30th off
I believe it's just a wedding though
Isn't it
Maybe See He's a mystery man He's a mystery boy No, you took the 30th off. You took the non-existent 30th off. I believe it's just a wedding, though, isn't it?
Maybe.
Yeah, see?
Oh, he's a mystery man. He's a mystery boy.
Why is he so mysterious asking for days off?
Because it's hot.
Oh, say, rich from you.
What do you mean?
Mr. Mystery.
I don't take days off, apart from when we all take time.
But you don't.
But everything's a mystery.
Oh, what do you have to do?
Guys, I've got to get out of here.
God, I'm busy this afternoon.
I know.
Because I'm busy this afternoon. Possibly what? Big afternoon today. I've got so much to do, what are you up to? Guys, I've got to get out of here. God, I'm busy this afternoon. I know. Because I'm busy this afternoon.
And we're doing possibly what?
Big afternoon today.
I've got so much to do.
What have you got on?
I've got to go to the gym after work.
Oh, my God.
Quickly.
I'll go for a swim.
And then I've got to fix my kitchen hole.
Oh, he's just listening to it.
He does have a kitchen hole.
And then I'm meeting Dr. Shawnee.
He's coming over to get his bag that he left at my place at the weekend.
I've got lots on.
What's in the bag?
Apparently it's ear pods.
Apparently it's ear pods that he needs.
Oh yeah.
Right.
And his clothes and stuff.
Well that's mysterious.
And then dinner,
then I'll have dinner.
I've got mints in the fridge.
No one cares anymore.
I was going to move on.
Oh, okay.
Good one.
See, it was,
he bored us.
I've started online shopping
and we're still drinking.
Mystery boredom.
Yeah, we're still doing this thing.
Anyway.
That's when Shannon said, what's the deal with getting paid for leap years, for leap day?
For the extra day that we're going to be working.
Yeah, and I was confused.
Yeah, because there's an extra day.
Yeah.
But.
So we get paid fortnightly So we get paid fortnightly.
We get paid fortnightly.
Yeah, but if you're talking your salary, it's your year's work.
And a year is 365, but next year it's 366.
Where's my extra day?
So you want one 365th of your salary paid extra.
This will 100.
But the way you told it yesterday is like you believed there was an extra weekday also invented.
Like it was going to go Tuesday, Wednesday, Bluff Day, Thursday, Friday.
Bluff Day.
Bluff Day.
Like I didn't think there was going to be like a new name for the day, but it's like I'm working an extra day for Ross Boss.
He's got to pay me for it.
No, you're not working an extra day though.
No, but I am because where's this extra day going?
Over the whole year. Yeah, so where's the money? I don't know when extra day, though. No, but I am, because where's this extra day going? Over the whole year.
Yeah, so where's the money?
I don't know when it comes in, though.
Yeah, but you don't get any less the other years.
So does that mean that my hourly wage goes down?
Minutely.
By 1,365th. Yeah, but she's right, though.
There's an extra day.
So I'm worth less next year.
Wait, is it a weekend next year?
No, because it does not matter. Oh, God. It doesn't matter. Wait, is it a weekend next year? It does
not matter. It doesn't matter.
I just googled
do you get paid extra for leap years?
And there's a website that says
some people can put it into their
contract.
The only reason you'll get paid
by salary staff, you're on a salary,
why salary staff can
get paid extra for the extra day is by putting it into their contract.
Well, I'll take a free day's leave if he wants to give me that.
Should we hold him ransom?
Should we pick the day that we think is the extra day?
And just be like, we're not coming in that day.
February 29th.
I mean, Jared's not going to be here.
We might as well take it all off and be like, well, we're not getting paid any extra for this.
February 29th is a Thursday. Do we want to push it to a March 1st?
Should we Monday-ize it?
But if I've already applied for my leave, can I cancel that now?
I'm sorry, that's already gone through.
You've got to renegotiate your contract.
Because you're so mysterious.
That's already been approved.
Also, yeah, stop being so mysterious with your leave. Oh my God. So if your salary worked out to be less than the minimum legal rate,
you'd have to change it.
That said, you need to be careful that the extra day
doesn't take your employees' pay below the minimum legal rate.
So if you were just on minimum wage.
If you were just scraping onto the bare minimum and you did an extra day,
you're actually technically not earning the minimum wage anymore.
Right.
Well, it might be time to call in the employment lawyer.
I feel like the company will definitely have dealt with this before
because there are some pedantic people in this industry.
You reckon?
Shannon.
Absolutely.
I'm not pedantic, I'm dumb.
No, no, no, I wasn't meaning you.
Someone will have taken this a step further.
No, I just want to know.
Posting. Oh, yeah. Hell a step further. No, I just want to know. Hosking.
Oh, yeah.
Hosking will get paid extra.
Yeah, yeah.
I just want to be fairly compensated for our hard work.
For a day put in the calendar to make up for the fact
that Earth's rotation around the sun is not precisely 365 days.
Right.
I don't know what to do.
I mean, you can top me up on my wages if you want.
You three could.
No, because we're also getting jacked by this system.
I'm getting dicked more than you.
That's true.
A white male is getting dicked more than a female.
Dude, I'm so sorry.
I appreciate that, but I need financial compensation.
Okay, well, us women could really get it for the men.
Thank you.
Yeah, maybe that's the case.
Okay, so the lowest paid person in this team should compensate the highest paid person in this team.
Because they're actually getting jacked more than anyone else.
That's capitalism.
Oh, no.
Right?
Shit, well, this backfired on you, didn't it, Shannon?
Shut your mouth that's delete
