Starting point is 00:00:00 The ZM Podcast Network. Fletchborn and Hayley's Little Bit of Pod. Treat yourself to McCafe coffee with my Macca's rewards. Welcome to A Little Bit of Pod. My children play sports. I like that. I think it's important for kids to play sports. Yes. Teamwork.
Starting point is 00:00:20 I'd be kind of keen for them to try individual sports. Tennis. Tennis, golf. Skeet shooting. golf, shooting. Skeet shooting. Why is that? You want to make them a star. Well, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:00:29 I just want them to not have to rely on other people. Yeah, fair enough. Yeah, yeah, yeah. One sucker brings the team down. Team sports growing up. Same. Rugby was the only option at primary school. And then hockey when I got older.
Starting point is 00:00:40 Cricket. But I quite liked your golf. Oh, yeah. Just because you could go out by yourself I got very frustrated around hole 7 I'd be like fuck this
Starting point is 00:00:48 and I still do still do fuck this and then I do 9 holes that's enough right because it's just on you yeah
Starting point is 00:00:54 but then the teams like they socialise and they yeah it's lonely and a lot of pressure yeah a lot of pressure
Starting point is 00:01:00 as a solo sport and it's just you and the coach oh there wouldn't wouldn't be a coach it'd just be me sort of a sort of a who was solo sport and it's just you and the coach. Oh, there wouldn't be a coach. It would just be me. Sort of a, who was there, Williams' dad? Richard Williams.
Starting point is 00:01:10 Yeah. I will be, when Indy's on the golf course and all this is a tennis star, he'll make a movie about me and Will Smith will play me. Push them until they don't love their passion anymore. And then I'll get up in the Academy Awards and say, keep my wife's name out of your mouth, and I'll smack whoever Chris Rock is. Whoever is hosting the awards.
Starting point is 00:01:30 Chris Rock's equivalent. Yeah. Stone Cold Steve Austin. I'll smack him. He'll be hosting it. And then I'll turn it into WrestleMania, which is this weekend. But anyway, sports are an important thing,
Starting point is 00:01:41 and the kids are doing it. And Indy had a school sports tournament netball this week. So after work one day this week, I went and watched that. And man, they got fucking thrashed. Were you just so bored out of your fucking mind? No, it was all right because I was playing a game like, is that 13-year-old taller than me? And I would walk past females who were 13
Starting point is 00:02:05 must have been 13 because it was an intermediate age tournament so 13 is about as old as you compared intermediate and yeah there was a few taller than me and I'm 6 foot 2 and I was wearing boots wow it's the hormones in the chickens it must be it's gotta be the hormones in the chickens they were so tall
Starting point is 00:02:21 but did you ever go to school with anyone at like intermediate or primary, and then as soon as you started high school, they stopped, and everyone else went, yeah, yeah, totally. But they were always less than six foot. They were like 5'10". And they went to 5'10 real quick, and everyone else was like, you're 5'6", you know, the right size for that age.
Starting point is 00:02:40 And then it gets into college, and you blow past them. Yeah. That's insanely close. But they were never six foot three or six foot four. Future Silver Ferns maybe. Gotta be.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Gotta be, yeah. And they were. They were very, very good at netball. Right. And Indy lost. Her team lost every game. Now the only reason
Starting point is 00:02:55 they didn't come last. Embarrassingly lost or? A few of them. Right. Now the only reason they didn't come last is they were supposed to play for last
Starting point is 00:03:03 but the other team left early to get back to school. So by default they came second come last is they were supposed to play for last but the other team left early to get back to school so by default they came second to last right afterwards i then shardé took them all back to school and i went and did something else and then when indy got home she's like how do you think that went and i said about as bad as it could like what i thought you're you're her dad you meant to lie parents these days, you've got to lie to your kids and tell them they're great. But that was the thing. I kind of thought about it, and I was like, it couldn't have gone worse.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Yeah, you can't sugarcoat it when it's that bad. If the other team had stayed and beaten you, it could have been worse. But I was just like, you guys were just outclassed at every step. And she's like, oh. I was like, yeah, you got thrashed. And she's like, yeah, we did. I was like yeah you got thrashed and she's like yeah we did I was like yeah you did
Starting point is 00:03:47 there's no denying it the numbers are on the board yeah I appreciate this this parenting it's the truth oh my mummies always do this to me
Starting point is 00:03:55 like with piano concerts and I'd make a fumble and I'd come off stage and she'd be like oh babe a bit more practice on the keys or marching
Starting point is 00:04:03 I'd come off and she'd be like oh what happened there because she's a marching didn't keep it tight she'd be like, oh, what happened there? Because she's a marching... Didn't keep it tight. Yeah, yeah. What happened in the crossover? Even if we won, when mum was coach,
Starting point is 00:04:11 she'd be like, that was good, we won. But could have been better. I remember getting home and... You were striving for it. I'd say to my parents or to dad, oh, we won cricket today. He's like, oh, were you playing the blind team? Comments like that, just to really keep you grounded.
Starting point is 00:04:26 Keep you on your toes. Yeah, you don't want getting hit yourself, you know? Yeah. And she said, is it better or worse than the basketball tournament we were in? And I said, the other one you came dead last in, I'd probably put it on par. Maybe sports isn't for her. Is she learning an instrument? It's good that you get it.
Starting point is 00:04:42 But then she wasn't demoralized. I fucking hated losing when I was in. Oh that you get it. But then she wasn't demoralized. I fucking hated losing when I was in. Oh, you're saying. The minute you're in a season and you're like, I reckon for all team sports I've played, I'm sitting about 50-50. Yeah. 50% we won, 50% we lost.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Some we got thrashed in. Yeah. I've never been on the end of like a beautiful victory where you smash a team 100-0 or anything crazy like that. Yeah, I have. But I've been on the receiving end of that, and it's demoralizing. Oh, my God, yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:03 But even social, like we had that social cricket been on the receiving end of that and it's demoralising. Oh my god, yeah. But even social, like we had that social cricket team, the work cricket team, we hated losing. Yeah. And it would be so competitive and feral, like people go all out. Yeah, same. I can't stand it. I wish I could be more like that because I
Starting point is 00:05:19 grew up a winner. I've always been a winner. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And when I had the rare moment of being a loser, I... You don't like it. I hate it. It hurts. Yeah, it hurts. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:31 But then that night we had hockey. Yeah. And they won against the second grade team. The second team in their grade. Well, I hope you gave her a lot of praise for that win. I didn't. I said, because they were so short, they were going to have to default because the kid there's sick everywhere oh you might hear i got a little summon someone's dragged something home from school a bit of clog but a clog bit of that
Starting point is 00:05:52 going around so a lot of the kids were like too sick to play and someone else was hurt so they were going to have to default yeah and then the coach was like i've got a friend who's got a couple of kids they love playing hockey they'll just come along have a game these kids were fucking exceptional oh really like future black kids were fucking exceptional to watch Oh really Like future black sticks Dude a pleasure to watch play the game It made me be like Oh I do love this game
Starting point is 00:06:12 I love this sport Seeing a skilled person do the sport you love You're like this is why I love this sport When it's done badly hockey looks so gamy It's so horrible The kids are growing and it's like Very feety And they're like
Starting point is 00:06:25 Let me get these out of the way My stick was always too short These kids were running In like a squat position They were low Making these beautiful tackles And these sweeping hits Some reverse sticks
Starting point is 00:06:36 I was like Wait so these In the rhythm These fill-ins Fucking smoked everyone Oh yes They ran around the other team And they ran around their own team
Starting point is 00:06:44 Wow And then Indy's like Yay we won And I was like Well Smoked everyone Oh yes They ran around the other team And they ran around their own team Wow And then Indy's like Yay we won And I was like Well You The ring-ins won You were there
Starting point is 00:06:52 You were there The ring-ins She was like Yeah they were very good Weren't they I was like They were Exceptional
Starting point is 00:06:58 I like this She's not going to grow up Delusional You know She's going to grow up And realise that she's average She's average and that's okay She's average how did they average and that's okay she's like how did they get that good i was like they fucking practice yeah a thousand hours
Starting point is 00:07:09 like ten thousand hours i was like how you haven't even like said dad can we go for it i've said to her oh should we go down to the school and have a hit round in the astroturf she's like nah yeah she gets it from her mother she wants to be she wants to be good without having to put in effort I'm very well aware I lack the effort But I'm not expecting anything magical I don't put in any effort, I'm not going to get any results That's something I'm very happy with
Starting point is 00:07:35 Like people, put in a bit of effort Get to know people, no fuck that I don't get to know them, and that's fine It's like me when someone says There's a piano somewhere, they're like play us something And I go to sit down and play something And that's fine. It's like me when someone says there's a piano somewhere. They're like, play us something. And I go to sit down and play something. And all I can think of is play like chopsticks or some shit.
Starting point is 00:07:49 Now I'm like, I'm a trained classical pianist. It's all gone. And I'm like, what happened? I didn't practice. You didn't practice. And it goes. And she was like, how often do you think they practice? I said probably multiple times a week.
Starting point is 00:08:01 And she was like, oh, multiple times a day. Probably every day after school. Yeah. And she was like, oh, OK. probably every day after school yeah and she was like oh okay I don't want to do that nah and then I think she like
Starting point is 00:08:09 understood my mantra is don't expect anything if you don't put anything in and that's absolutely fine too but you've got to you can't just expect to be magically good at things
Starting point is 00:08:18 yeah so that was quite nice wow real life I've been in a real fucking shitty mood this week I feel sorry for my daughters yeah what did she was showing me August was showing me Nice. Wow, real life. I've been in a real fucking shitty mood this week. Sorry for my daughters. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:27 What did she was showing me? August was showing me something she sewed at school and something because their teacher was away and she's like, oh, what do you think of this? And I was like, it's okay. Oh my God. It's okay. Wow. And she was like, oh.
Starting point is 00:08:40 I was like, yeah. What did the other kids do? She was like, oh, this, this, this. And I was like, oh, okay. like, yeah. What did the other kids do? She was like, oh, this, this, this. And I was like, oh, okay, yeah, okay. Okay. Jesus. I got a fire. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:51 That fire wasn't like, that sucks. Because it didn't. It was like her first time sewing something. I was like, that's quite good. That's good. But I think she wanted me to be like, that's the best thing I've ever seen. Wow. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:01 I couldn't muster the energy to lie. You've never done fake enthusiasm? I can't. No, you can't. It's like here at work, they're like, we need to film something where you're pretending to be excited.
Starting point is 00:09:10 I was like, I can't. I'm either excited or I'm not. Some practice. You can practice. I'm going to give you some, any news, and you just have to pretend like you're super jazzed about it.
Starting point is 00:09:18 Okay. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Hanson's getting back together They're touring New Zealand
Starting point is 00:09:25 I don't give a fuck Okay no So you're practising Faux enthusiasm Right Okay here we go Oh we're from the same era Maybe go for something
Starting point is 00:09:33 Vaughn does like Okay Yeah Oh my god Oh my god I just found a vintage Land Rover On Trade Me How much?
Starting point is 00:09:41 Oh my god Buy now 5k mint condition I don't have $5,000 right now. It's a bad just. Now I'm shitty that I can't afford it and it's sitting there. Plus that would just get lost in a bidding war. Okay. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:09:52 Two for one beanies at Helen Stein's. I'm not going to go to Helen Stein's. Okay. All right. I don't think he's in the right mood to do this this week. No, I don't think he's feeling it. I'm having fun. He's having fun.
