taking a ragtag group of people changing their lives and impacting the earth
right so hopefully there's something that we said that you would actually
come closer to the claim
right and last but not least, I want to welcome 2019 churches in the building today.
Seem like in Atlanta, there's two churches on every corner.
So I drove by a couple to get here, and we don't take that for granted, so.
A couple honorable mentions.
One, I want to start by honoring our pastor to see the past
Philip Anthony Mitchell
no no about actually going on tonight same 20 years and I just continue to say
I may sound like a broken record but I mean it when I say it I will give honor to him for keeping his hand to the plow
my family grew real quick over COVID
those who know we went from a family of three to a family of six in a very short amount of time
and I know trying to corral six people on a Sunday morning in my own house can get crazy I don't even want to think about what he goes through to shepherd this family
pastor Brandon
he came to pour it out on us the first couple of first four
installments in this series became family to us just not past the Phil so
brother if you watching pass if you watch this one and it's okay if I take
out some time I'd actually honor a couple of communicators of this house
if you've been tuned in man I want to honor pastor Kenny two weeks though he
came to preach his face off
alright don't you forget the up-and-coming rising communicator miss Courtney McClendon
he coming off the stage I was back there and I felt
all jokes aside I was I was sitting there thinking man I was like you know
they actually it's the type of pressure you want in the house I just felt like
they really spent time with God really spent time with God and say what do you
want me to say to your people anybody comes after this any new kid this that's the pressure just try to come
up here and try to say something little joke little human wisdom might get crickets I want
to make it real tough on you might just look at you like all right is that what thus saith the Lord yeah yeah
that's my prayer man
I'll just tell you right now my prayers
ones that are here today that are watching on right now even the ones that are gonna watch
this recording i'm gonna do one more thing i'll take up a little bit of time but i want to do it
anyway i want to shout out my wife If you don't do nothing else, husbands, you better shout them out if they push out some babies for you.
They come close to death pushing out babies for you.
You don't shout them out for nothing else our testimony is we fought to get to the good place in marriage
I said we fought to get to the good place in marriage
you can jump straight up and down
you can speak in tongues
you can foam at the mouth
and you still may have to fight to get to the good place in marriage
I'm not ashamed to say
I'm an elder got married in 2015 and took some fighting to get to the good place in marriage. I'm not ashamed to say I'm an elder,
got married in 2015,
and took some fighting to get to the good place.
And she's stuck in there with me.
My ministry partner, I just want to shout y'all out.
All right, we are continuing.
In a series we are calling the God of Miracles.
And I have the honor and privilege of bringing, I think it's the seventh installation of this series to you.
And the title of the sermon is Qualified to Declare.
Qualified to Declare. Qualified to Declare.
Bow your heads, let me pray for us.
Holy Father, it's you that has called us.
It's you that has justified us.
You that has claimed us when maybe others didn't want to.
It's you that has loved on us.
That put the plan of salvation into play and it's going even now and stretching
all over the globe.
Thank you for this opportunity to sit in front of your people. Truly, I'm not worthy, but you've chosen to use me this day.
I pray like others already have, God, that I would decrease and you would increase.
That you prepare the hearts and actually prick the hearts of believers and unbelievers.
That the word of God would actually have effect in their souls.
For any and all purposes that you would deem
necessary and faithful.
You will be careful.
You will be careful.
You will be careful.
In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen.
Have a seat.
Have a seat.
Have a seat. How's it back now, family?
Okay.
Actually, family, I'm just going to jump into it today. We got a lot of ground to cover.
I will be covering Matthew chapter 9 verses 1 through 8. But before we actually get to verse 1, I think it's important. I think it's important. Is that better, family? All right.
Thank you for the sound team.
All right.
Okay.
All right.
So before we actually jump into the first verse here,
I think it's important that we actually go to the last verses that Courtney covered last week so we can get the transition.
Is that all right, family?
All right.
Let's jump into Matthew 8, chapter 33 and 34
verses. And it said, the herdsmen fled and going into the city, they told everything,
especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men. If you weren't here last Sunday,
she actually covered the account where the demonized men were freed by Jesus. And the demons actually ran into the pigs
and they ran into the sea, all right?
And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus.
And when they saw him,
they begged him to leave their region.
Now let's jump into 9-1.
And it says, and getting into a boat,
he crossed over and came into his own city.
Take that down.
Listen, it's very important, beloved.
When you do the work of the Lord,
you do not look to men for validation.
You don't look for their approval.
You don't look for nothing.
If that's some of us, we done with the ministry already.
We done freed them men.
Y'all had to go all the way around them.
We freed them.
Now you can take that part of the city again.
And now you're going to come out to meet me.
And I'm thinking you about to big up me and all that good stuff.
You say, yo, why don't you go to Jesus?
I'm supposed to done with the ministry.
We done.
I thought I was gonna you know i was
gonna be able to get a pillar let's go over my church we're gonna have 500 people on the first
day they say yo can you leave like they begged him to can you leave
we have to be very careful as disciples to attach our worship
vertically and then horizontally as he sees fit.
So then when they put that down, it's still vertical.
Now, who else do you have me to serve, God?
Who else do you have me to minister to?
Or they put that somewhere else.
Somebody else in the spirit of the Lord.
You're not somewhere in a basement talking about why God, why?
Right. You're not somewhere in a basement talking about why God, why? Right, 9-2.
And he says, and behold, some people brought to him a paralytic lying on a bed.
Speaking of Jesus.
And when Jesus sought their faith, he said to the paralytic,
take heart, my son, your sins are forgiven.
Although there is not
an implication in this account, in Matthew's account,
that the people actually brought the men, the paralytic,
the Jesus, that they knew each other,
but actually in another account, they actually said
they were friends, right? But even
in this account, say they're not friends,
they knew who to bring him to.
They knew where
to go.
What are we going to do with a paralytic person?
What are we going to do?
What are you going to do,
paralytic person?
You're not like a crazy surgeon or nothing like that.
Right? Okay.
What are you going to do with someone depressed?
What are you going to do with someone with low self-esteem?
What are you going to do?
It's important that we lay the weight of souls on Jesus.
I just come to encourage you because somebody, you actually,
you took that way. I was actually encouraging the
squad leaders the other two weeks ago.
We actually had a
training and I said, when you are a leader
and all of us should be making disciples,
amen? Amen?
When you introduce somebody, one of the worst
mistakes we do is now we try to become
their savior.
Amen, I just got saved, man is now we try to become their savior. Amen.
I just got saved, man.
He had about to lay me off.
What are you going to do?
Disappoint both of y'all. Amen.
This person is struggling with suicide. This person is struggling with suicide,
this person struggling with depression,
this person struggling in life,
this person with an identity you did not give to them. and behold some people brought to him a paralytic line on the bed and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic take heart my son your sins are
forgiven it said Jesus saw their faith can I tell you a story I was actually I belonged to a largely
Caucasian church for like two years before I moved down here right and can I talk to you like we
family okay so I went there and um you know us we we very rambunctious, right?
Hands in the air, all that jumping, yes, you, all that, crazy jumps.
And we family.
I didn't come to get judged as the elder, okay?
I plan on it.
Man, y'all love God, man.
Come on, man.
Literally, and stay with me. We're won't come in the journey together literally they had to they used to have coffee we don't know nothing about that they used to serve coffee
and they had to take the coffee bar away because they would they would they would worship like this
with the coffee and the white pastor by the way he said I'm essentially we get tired of that you won't worship God because you got a
coffee in your hand take the coffee balls to the coffee bar way save you
some sins you must stay here for the coffee all right all right and I used to
I used to judge them right made it stuffy in there. But every once in a while, they would just bring somebody up on stage and say, we're going to welcome the stage.
We actually have some people that are actually going to be missionaries.
They're going to go to the place of Nepal, and they're going to plant a church because those people haven't heard the gospel.
I'm talking about like generalizations, Brad and Cindy
with their white babies.
I said we're going to talk like we're family.
Alright? With their white babies.
They would sell their house. They would sell
their cars. They would sell everything
and they would go over there. And I'm not talking about
just a little mission trip.
A little hot five, six days. days went over there gave some people's gospel we gave some rice said we love you the name
of Jesus I'm going back to North Carolina no no no no they said this is
where I feel like the Lord has actually told us to go and we're going to be here until
I would like to say that Jesus saw their faith
I just looked it up
one of the people that actually, white couple, Jordan,
I forget his wife's name.
They actually sat beside me.
They were new when I first started coming in as well.
This guy named Blair Graham
was kind of introducing us to the ministry.
They're in Nairobi, Kenya.
White people.
I think he's like director of operations over there.
When's the last time you just pushed all your chips on the table?
If you don't come through God, I'm going to fall flat on my face.
That's what they did there.
In another account, you're actually more familiar with this account
we're talking about the friends that bought the guy in the paralytic right
right just so you know the gospels are complimentary
okay so it's almost like bad example i'm gonna say it anyway right so before y'all
before y'all go rob a bank.
All right?
Okay, make a plan.
Right?
They take y'all in the separate rooms, interview y'all.
Y'all, they're going to try to save yourselves, right?
He did it, he did it, whatever, right?
Right?
But if y'all just went on vacation, I brought y'all in and sat y'all one by one and said,
what happened?
Right?
There's no threat of anything. A lot of times, you should tell the truth they should actually commingle it should be
complimentary maybe you saw from this angle maybe you didn't go ziplining but
you saw that person ziplining that person went ziplining that person was
over there on the beach and they saw the same thing from a different angle you combine all of them to get the full account okay so in
another account that's what said the friends came because Jesus came to the
city of Caperno they said he returned home and he said he was so pressed
about this man actually got a paralyzed man on top of a roof.
When I was doing my research, it said towel.
You had to pull that back and then lowered him.
All of a sudden, the paralytic man is just here.
Hopefully, it was a smooth ride.
But think about it.
It's back there in the Bible.
It ain't like they got real smooth pulleys and whatnot.
I just hope that it got but he got there right right and one of what i love about jesus nobody said i looked it
up he says take heart my son your sins are forgiven particular word son, more than likely he was a young man.
He even had me
look at the whole account again. Were his friends, were they all
like teenagers?
Usually young men and older men aren't
friends, right?
Just could have been teenagers.
What are you teaching your children?
You better not be waiting.? Better not be waiting.
We better not be waiting.
Waiting on what?
The enemy is not waiting to indoctrinate them.
Can't even sit there and let myself watch commercials no more.
Don't know what's going to be on the screen.
Wait for what?
My son just said,
hey, the other day he was like,
God stopped the rain.
I didn't know what to say,
but I was like, okay,
well, this is a start.
He's starting.
He's starting.
So that when he gets of age to be able to make decisions, he knows where to take his problems to.
In the Amplified version, the end of verse 2 says
do not be afraid son
your sins are forgiven
the penalty is paid
the guilt removed
and you are declared to be in right standing with God
that's so
that forgiveness is a weighty
thing you are declared to
be in right standing with
God all right so I should
went a little bit deeper
right I wouldn't go look
up the word forgiven and
it wasn't in there by
itself okay I use
something called a
Strong's Concordance I
go to look up you know
the Greek Aramaic all
that good stuff right and
it wasn't there by
itself it actually is
literally a phrase in
Strong's Concordance
that said, be forgiven.
Be forgiven.
It's together, right?
And it said, better translated in English as,
be forgiven to you.
It's like a declaration.
Be forgiven to you.
To you.
I can fit anybody in there
because the declaration
is on the one that is making it.
The weight is on him.
Of the 31 times this was used in scripture,
this is the only time
that either no condition was expressed that one had to meet or there wasn't a future tense put on it.
It would always say they shall be forgiven.
Never done before, never done after.
Jesus is on the scene, looks at the paralytic young boy and says be
forgiven you let's go to verse three and behold some of the scribes said to themselves this man
is blaspheming take that down I already established I'm going to talk to you like we
family when I see scribes in the bible I don't like them I get an ill look in my face I'm like
but now I understand I empathize with. They're sitting there and they came
and they're looking
and this person, this teacher
has forgiven sins.
Sharing a word a little bit.
Fill yourself a little bit.
You know?
Do a little miracle. Break some bread. I'm with you. I'm with you. What? but you said you forgive sins
let's bring it down to just a human level right so let's just say i'm in my house i got four
children my son is four right and uh we got this guy uh that came to the house to like fix the refrigerator it was it was
like two people right and uh nia fixed my plate and it's like a piece of chicken right there this
is my daddy's a big piece of chicken right and the guy came in and was like hey um uh one of my guys
is hungry is anything i can eat? Right? Right?
And he just saw that and was just like,
and gave it to his man.
I consider myself a godly man.
I'm going there, Courtney.
I already said he's still working on me, right?
If I come around the corner
and my son say,
Daddy, he took your chicken.
I ain't even got to be hungry.
Who did what?
There's a good chance I'm walking and say,
Hey, my man.
Yo. Where's my chicken? there's a good chance I'm walking, let's say, my man, yo,
where's my chicken?
Oh, I just gave it to the guy,
he was hungry.
That wasn't yours to give.
It wasn't your chicken,
but he was hungry,
it wasn't your chicken.
He don't come in my house,
grab my piece of
chicken and give it to somebody else I don't care what's going on this is what
the scribes were saying that forgiveness is not yours to give you are here
acting like you God You lost your mind?
You know what had to happen in the Old Testament
to be forgiven for this?
You had to go out and kill some doves,
some bulls, something.
We had to drive across the water
all to get forgiveness.
You're going to walk up
and just going to give it out.
Like you God.
Thank you, God.
See where I'm going verse four and five but Jesus knowing what is beautiful is
they were actually respectful enough not even to say it out loud. I might have said it out loud. But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, why do you think evil in your hearts?
For which is easier to say your sins are forgiven or say rise and walk?
Jesus. It's the word. Or say rise and walk? Jesus!
It's the word!
Which one is easier to say?
Easier to say.
Jesus!
Let me add it.
Which one is easier to say with integrity?
Right?
Because honestly, it may be easy to say if you're a liar
jesus is not your sins are forgiven where's the proof of that
you gotta say rise and walk we need to see something happen after you say that
right right so maybe it's debatable but it's likely that they knew about the scripture
because we'll get to that later let's look up psalms 103 verses one through three
it says bless the lord oh my soul and all that is within me popular verse bless his holy name
bless the lord oh my soul and forget not all of his benefits what benefits are they
talking about it says bless he who forgives all your iniquity sins and who heals all your diseases
it's a chance they knew that so he caught him in a pickle
and if i could just put in there i wish jesus said i'll wait
it didn't say that he did but and if I could just put it in there, I wish Jesus said, I'll wait.
It didn't say that he did, but...
All right, I'm gonna slow down. Let me explain just a couple of things. I'm gonna highlight two things, right? Because these are something we really don't talk about, right? One is scribes,
right? Put that slide up, and we'll go through it. Scribes, we don't talk about them a lot,
but they're actually learned men and teachers in the New Testament, right?
And although scribes and Pharisees
were identified as different groups,
there may have been overlap in the communities.
And one could have been, I'm saying all were,
a scribe and a Pharisee, all right?
Essentially looked at, they were looked at
as leaders in the Jewish community
and some could have had political power, right? And according to the depiction of this account in Luke,
in Luke 5, 17, same story, different vantage point. On one of those days, as he, Jesus, was teaching,
Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee
and Judea and Jerusalem and the power of the Lord was with him to heal and in my studies I saw there
was a scribe in every village and Capernaum it was only like 15 1500. So they came from all over the place. That's scribes. Now let's
talk about something called or a term, son of man, that you'll see in the New Testament.
By far, it's the most frequent name that Jesus calls himself. Son of man recorded over 100
times in the gospels. Sometimes Christ used son of man simply over 100 times in the gospels sometimes Christ used son of man simply as
a substitute for the pronoun pronoun I right like he said Jesus Jesus says foxes have holes and birds
of the air have nests but I the son of man have nowhere to lay his head right then there are other
references where it's not talking about his humanity it's not talking about his humanity. It's not talking about his humility.
It's talking about him as being God.
We're talking about his deity.
One of the best examples here.
Let's go to Daniel 7th chapter.
This was in the book of Daniel.
He had a vision that that troubled him greatly right and this
is actually in the detail of the first part of that but this is what the vision that he saw
Daniel says I saw in the night visions and behold with the clouds of heaven there came one like a
son of man and he came to the ancient of days, speaking of God, and was presented before him. And to him, the son of man was given dominion and glory and a kingdom that all people's nations and languages should serve him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away.
And his kingdom, one that shall not be destroyed it's likely that
they knew of that son of man okay now let's jump back into the main package
passage let's look at scripture 6
all right so we heard their thoughts this This is Jesus' response. But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.
Stop.
I am the Son of Man.
This was a reference to end time comings.
It actually has another reference to him in Revelation 1-7.
I am the son of man.
I am the one that you have been waiting on.
I am the one that was prophesied about.
I am the one that is the savior of the world.
I died for all sins.
I am the one that has authority and a kingdom.
We'll have glory forever and ever.
But that you may know,
speaking of the scribes,
that the son of man has authority on earth
to forgive sins.
He then turned to the paralytic and said,
rise, pick up your bed. I love how he dealt with the distraction and then he turned back
to his mission. Dealt with the naysayers and then turned back to the man to love on.
Someone would have been
flexing all on the scribes,
forget about the man
that's sitting there laying,
just, I'm God.
Right, but not the right time
or seven straightforward verse probably my favorite one in the whole the whole
passage and he rose and went home.
He was a paralytic.
We don't even know his name.
His whole identity was, I'm paralyzed.
There were no desk jobs back then.
Very few. Maybe an accountant, tax collector. there were no desk jobs back then very few
maybe an accountant, tax collector
everybody else was in the field doing work
he just changed the whole trajectory of that young man's life
some of you actually come in
we've had a lot of people actually get saved over the last couple of months
and you come and had an experience with God,
but then you went home.
Went home.
And most of us, God didn't do a miracle on everything.
Paralytic.
Go home.
We don't know what home looks like.
You know what you got to do at home, beloved?
Disciples? You got to walk this thing
out every day.
Too many of us
forget the miracle and
focus on home.
And we judge the love of God by what home
looks like at that time.
I encourage
you to keep that miracle in your soul.
Keep what the Lord has done for you in your soul.
Remember that.
That's his character.
Alright, we're closing now verse 8
it said when the crowd saw it
and they glorified God
who had given such authority
to men
and we can't control it but we can't control it,
but we can influence it.
After every work of God,
everything you do for the Lord,
that's what you want to happen.
You don't want them glorifying you.
It's not about men being puffed up right there.
You want them,
if they are afraid and all of God,
and glorifying him.
That's the goal.
And glorify there says to magnify, to extol, and to praise.
Ascribing honor to him, acknowledging him as his being, attributes, and acts.
I just want to close with saying
the greatest miracle isn't the miraculous
healing of the paralytic.
Although that's what we're focused on there.
It is absolutely the forgiveness
of sins.
There have been healings in the Old Testament.
Prophet laid on a
I want to say there's a
little girl and she got up you've seen miracles all put into places it kept expanding you've seen
that but it took jesus to die once and for all for all sins
i know i know we want to see an arm grow back, and God has done it.
You've seen it.
You can look it up, like old school charismatic cats.
You've seen it.
They have accounts of that.
But the bigger miracle is that you've been rescued from death.
You've been justified in Jesus Christ we've been raised in Jesus Christ we
actually sit in him and heavily places on the right-hand side of the father us
while we're still being renewed. Showed her the glory of God.
Yeah.
Sometimes we actually ignore him.
But we ignore the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
While we're actually moving forward and we stumble,
we're still in him.
Not being judged by every bit,
being judged because he actually
has covered the multitude of cities.
Separating our transgressions
as far away from us
as the east is from the west.
Making us holy by the blood of Jesus.
And loving and forgiving God
that merciful Father that we talk about
see you
anybody else just want to know that God
you in the chat anybody else want to know that God?
You in the chat, anybody else want to know that God?
Get to know him. You can get to know him.
You can get to know him because blood was shed.
He covered your offenses with the blood from Calvary. Thank you for that.
Thank you, God.
If one comes to know Jesus Christ.
All right, family, let me pray for us
Holy Father I pray that you bring this word from your scriptures that we will ultimately just get to know you, God.
So that we will be on the battlefield
and people will come to us
and we will point them to Jesus.
That we will walk in the authority of Christ
that we have inside of you.
That ultimately you would have your way.
Jesus Christ.
Amen.
